oomers are no lovers of cookie cutter lifestyles, activities or surroundings.

“Bingo isn’t what a younger person is looking for.

Basically young retirees will find their own activities; dining out with friends, theater, movies, golfing, and in our case, wine clubs and tastings,” agreed Dave and Cathy Girsch, Landmark Commons homeowners who retired at 58 and 50, respectively.

The Girsches require as much freedom from rules as possible. They want to grab a quick sandwich and salad in the relaxed Bistro or pick up a to-go-order from the Common’s Restaurant. They save more elegant dining for special occasions.

What it comes down to it, boomers want choices and freedom in their retirement years.

The Girsches faced a frightening health crisis in their 50s, along with the death of three parents within a year and a half. “We found we were spending our free time maintaining the house, lawn and gardens we once enjoyed as hobbies instead of enjoying life with each other. We want more time to play, golf and travel before our ages or health prohibit these activities,” the couple said.

Dave and Sonya Snyder recall arduous work at their daytime jobs and maintaining 15 apartments on their evenings and weekends before retirement. They found downsizing a freeing experience” when they moved to the Commons at age 62 and 66.

“We have lived at the Commons for five years, and the kids have thrived being around so many grandpas and grandmas. Some days we had waffles in the Bistro for breakfast, burger and fries for lunch and dinner in the Bay Restaurant.

We fished in our pond (whole kernel corn for bait), swam in The Landmark pool, rode bikes, worked out in the gym and decorated the sidewalks with chalk. Our neighbors call our grandchildren by name,” the Snyders said.

Sheryl Annette had great fun starting from scratch with a new home decor when she began residency at The Commons. All of her furniture except the dining room is new.

Winter white and pumpkin are her living room colors, and touches of yellow and blue brighten her kitchen. Guests often remark that it looks like a model home.

Five days a week she is out the door to her passion, golfing. The bonus is she can choose from three golf courses within 1 ½ miles of her doorstep. Annette was inducted into the Waterloo Golf Hall of Fame after spending 22 years on the Leisure Services Board.

“I am a member of the Iowa Women’s Golf Association,

and on a Ladies rating team for golf courses in our District,” she pointed out.

Larry and Ruth Weigle loved their home, but it “became clear that we wanted to be spending our time doing what we enjoy and not keeping up a big house and lawn.”

Larry can be found in the Landmark Commons woodshop most days, spending several hours with lathe and wood, crafting exquisite wooden bowls and other pieces with blended multiple grains. A visitor noted, “This display is from an artist colony, right? No one here has this expertise.”

Larry does. He was ready to gracefully sacrifice many of his woodworking tools when moving to The Commons, but was delighted to find not only everything he owned, but additional equipment and space in the woodshop at Landmark.

Ruth has quickly gotten the reputation around the community as the “master baker.” She loves the joy she brings to others when she shares her homemade delights with her new friends.

The Weigles describe their adult children’s original hesitancy to see their parents make this transition of leaving their family home. “In their 40s, the children visited once and did an about-face, asking, ‘How soon can we move in?’”

Ruth laughed, describing her 8-year-old granddaughter Emma’s reaction as she walked by the Bistro, “Grandma, look at those guys in there telling jokes; Grandpa is going to love it here!”

The Weigle family relishes their traditional extended-family vacations. This summer they spent a week with their family at the Boundary Waters, fishing, boating, canoeing and cooking on the campfire with three generations.

Boomers at Landmark commented about the joy and importance of freedom at Landmark has a great deal to do with the decor. They chose unordinary floor choices, paint colors, fixtures and cabinetry and even made some structural changes. The Snyders installed their own wood floors and painted unique wall colors with stenciling.

All four couples talked about downsizing being best tackled when younger vs. All express being relieved not to dump this huge, emotional job on loved ones in the future.

“Now we have the freedom of leaving for a long weekend of enjoying Iowa State University football or a two-week trip to Utah to visit our son or a wine-club gathering in another city. Just lock the door and no worries. Did the water pipe break, furnace quit? Not our problem. No need to make arrangements for someone to mow, remove snow and watch the house,” the Girsches added.

ose Campbell was widowed after 26 years of marriage.

John Souza’s wife died after 44 years and five children together.

Both Campbell and Souza were looking for friendship and fun, not a second chance at love, when they bumped into each other online last October on a social network called Eons.

Eons is one of at least two dozen social networks aimed squarely at Baby Boomers, the population bubble born between 1946 and 1964 that has defied traditional perceptions of aging and retirement. Many boomers jumped into the Internet mashup to keep track of their kids on Facebook or MySpace, then moved on to their own networks in search of more common ground.

They’re blogging about the virtues of oatmeal and the beauty of aging, posting video clips from their favorite old movies, and sharing ideas and support on grieving the death of a spouse, caring for a sick parent or sex after 50.

Besides Eons, other sites include BOOMj, BoomSpeak and BoomerGirl, along with Eldr, Secondprime and Growingbolder.

“Being 50 and over we all grew up around the same things. The same TV shows, the same history. When I say Roy Rogers, they know who I’m talking about,” said 61-year-old Didi Moe of Melbourne, Fla., who started Cen-

tral Florida Singles, the discussion group on Eons where Campbell and Souza met.

The Boston-based Eons was founded by Internet pioneer Jeffrey C. Taylor in 2006, the year after he left his joblistings startup, Monster.

“It’s a party,” said Taylor, 47. “People kind of laughed at me when I said I was launching a boomer Web site. It was clear there wasn’t any buzz. But they’re loving it. It’s a difference in life stage, lifestyle and life experience.”

Taylor got Eons online just as the first boomers began turning 60 with their health and energy intact, longevity lengthened, and enough disposable income to attract advertisers and venture capitalists alike. With 700,000 registered users and 600 to 700 people a day joining its newcomers club, Eons offers plenty of virtual hand-holding with volunteer greeters and friendly experts who are peers.

Some of the boomer networking sites are loaded with staff content and expertise, or have a particular focus such as social change. Others, Eons included, are more user-driven, with hundreds of discussion groups, beginner widgets and age-specific applications like Eons’ “LifePath,” a way to plot a timeline of important personal events and future aspirations.

he story goes, Paul McCartney wrote the lyrics to this song when he was just 16. His perspective of aging is similar to that of any teenager, in fact, similar to that of most people under age 60.

From a vantage point much closer to 64 than 16, I can tell you that it’s not nearly as bad as some would assume.

In fact, aren’t most of us shocked when confronted with our actual age?

Where have the years gone? Why don’t I feel older? Why are the police officers, doctors, retail clerks so young?

Why did that young person offer me her seat on the tram? I must have been fast-forwarded to this point in time.

There is even a name for this phenomenon: Ageism. Ageism technically refers to discrimination against any age group, but it is often used now to describe the mocking of older folks as less mobile, less intelligent, less attractive, etc.

By succumbing to this belief, we allow ourselves to become prey for the marketers who promote an illusion of youth, selling everything from anti-

aging creams to hair transplants. And even though people of all ages wear jeans and buy cars, have you noticed that advertisers most often use youthful models?

Erdman Palmore, a professor emeritus at Duke University writes, “One can say unequivocally that older people are getting smarter, richer and healthier as time goes on.”

In a study for the American Psychological Association, Yale School of Public Health Professor Becca Levy concluded that old people with positive perceptions of aging lived an average of 7.5 years longer than those with negative images of growing older.

I propose that we fight the perception of deterioration and impairment in aging by embracing Palmore’s optimism.

This is the time to take advantage of the liberation that aging brings. Most of us have more time and more disposable income than we did when raising our families. We can make the most of this freedom by embracing new opportunities. This might be different for each of us but some examples could

be learning a foreign language, taking an art class, skydiving, tutoring a child, volunteering, traveling, entertaining friends, researching family history and enjoying nature.

Options are as endless as our imaginations.

It all begins with a more positive perception of aging. It is up to each of us to make our future years as meaningful as we hope they will be. We can stop looking backward with regret and begin to look forward by making the most of the advantages that we have.

he concept of wellness can represent different thoughts, actions and ideas. Wellness can be defined as eating right and regularly exercising. It can mean maintaining work-life balance and limiting stress, or defined as maintaining a certain level of independence and quality of life.

The NewAldaya Wellness Center offers a variety of health education and wellness programming opportunities for all ages and fitness levels. For example, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon, you’ll find a group of NewAldaya’s Independent Living Residents attending a progressive resistance training class focused on maintaining and improving participants’ range of motion, strength and balance.

Lindsay Wolf is NewAldaya’s wellness coordinator.

“I can feel a huge difference since I first started attending the class a few months ago,” says one NewAldaya resident. “I had taken a pretty nasty fall about three years ago and had been sitting ever since. I lost a lot of strength and a great deal of flexibility.

Now I am regaining strength and even feel confident enough to walk around without my walker, thanks to Lindsay and the class, I am feeling like myself again.”

Other residents like the group exercise setting because of its social benefits.

Many take advantage of the class, then head to the NewAldaya Main Street River Rock Cafe for coffee.

Most of them will come back to haunt her when she grows older — 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond. She’ll see them reflected in her mirror.

Smoking can lead to premature aging and wrinkles, damaging skin’s collagen and elastin. Too much sun exposure can cause early aging, dark spots, uneven skin tones, even skin cancers, points out David Congdon, MD, MPH, Cedar Valley Center for Facial Plastic Surgery and Cedar Valley points out.

“Smoking speeds up the process of aging. Sun exposure can damage skin.

If you want to look better as you grow older, stop smoking. Use sun protection and try self-tanners.”

Stress is aging, too, and you can’t help genetics. If Dad had droopy eyes, you might have them too. As we age, skin has less “snap,” Congdon ex-

plains. Skin begins to sag, bag and lose the tautness of youth, and it doesn’t “bounce” back like it once did.

Women are encouraged to take care of themselves at every age, but it is possible to reverse skin damage — or at least improve its condition.

Prescription-strength regimens like Obagi contain products that can restore or rejuvenate skin through such ingredients as Retionic acid and steroids that are proven effective.

“Skin turns over every six weeks or so. MYTH: RUNNING IS BAD FOR YOUR KNEES. Truth: What’s really hard on the knees is extra body weight. Each additional pound of body mass puts 4 additional pounds of stress on the knee, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. That said, if you experience pain while running, stop and talk to your doctor.

Fitness misconceptions are rampant, in part due to misleading infomercials, but also because scientific results are mixed on some commonly held beliefs. Meanwhile, what works for one person doesn’t necessarily benefit another.

Some things you think you know may be misguided:

MYTH: WHEN YOU STOP EXERCISING, YOUR MUSCLE TURNS TO FAT. Truth: Muscle won’t morph into fat because they’re different types of cells, said Brian Udermann, a professor in the department of exercise and sport science at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. Although you can lose muscle mass, one doesn’t replace the other. When you gain muscle mass, the muscle fibers or individual cells get bigger. If you stop lifting, the muscle fibers don’t go away, they just shrink. The same thing happens when you gain fat; the existing cells get bigger. If you lose weight; the fat cells decrease in size.

Try this: Incorporate two resistance training sessions a week.

This could include using body weight, free weights, resistance bands, kettlebells or machines.

Try this: Try running on a variety of surfaces and incorporating balance training and knee-strengthening exercises including squats.

Try this: To make your muscles stand out, you either have to lose fat or make your muscles bigger. Light weights won’t help you do either unless you do enough reps to reach or get close to failure (exhaustion).

Both are fixed and attached to bone, said personal trainer Tom Holland. “In order to lengthen it, you’d have to detach it and reattach it farther down the bone.”

Try this: Make your muscles look longer by performing exercises like seated cable rows or bent-over dumbbell rows that pull your shoulders back and help dramatically improve your posture, Holland said.

Tips to monitor prescriptions to prevent error TEXT | MCT

Medication-related problems are common, costly and hurt people, according to a 2012 report from the American Geriatrics Society. Problems can occur when medications are taken incorrectly or conflict with one another or with certain foods and alcohol.

Fatal prescription interactions can occur at any age. Dr. Paul E. Carns, an anesthesiologist and assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., says that the most vulnerable are the elderly, who use an average of 16 medications apiece, often prescribed by different specialists and acquired at different pharmacies as patients shop for the best prices.

The problem extends to over-thecounter medications taken in excess, from fever reducers such as Tylenol, which can damage the liver, and anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil, which can affect the kidneys, he says.

Additional interactions to watch for: certain beta blockers can have an adverse effect on blood sugar; anti-inflammatory medicines can raise blood pressure; some antibiotics and high doses of grapefruit can inhibit the metabolism or breakdown of statins in cholesterol medications; coumadin, a blood thinner, can be blocked by too much vitamin K, which comes from eating green vegetables.

Compile a personal medication dossier, keep it up to date, and show it to all doctors and health care professionals you see on every visit.

If you don’t know why you’re taking medications on the list or are not sure how to take them, ask.

If you’re taking more than one medication for the same condition, ask why.

If you are taking medications prescribed by doctors you don’t see on a regular basis, ask your primary care physician whether you still need to take them.

Knotty issue MANY WOMEN OVER 50 CAN SUFFER FROM VARICOSE VEINS; WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT EMILY CHRISTENSEN | COURIER STAFF WRITER

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services about half of all people 50 and older are affected by varicose veins, and about 50 to 55 percent of all women suffer from one of several vein problems.

“Females are at a higher risk, and the older they get the higher the risk,” said Dr. Kamran M. Karimi, a vascular surgeon with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. Karimi said age, birthing multiple children, family history, weight, race and jobs that require hours standing are also risk factors.

That said, Karimi’s advice is quite simple: “If they are not bothering you, you shouldn’t bother them.”

Cosmetic fixes for spider and reticular veins — which aren’t covered by insurance — are available, Karimi said. Those looking to rid their legs of the purplish spider veins or thicker, blue reticular veins can choose sclerotherapy, a procedure that injects medicine into the veins and causes them to shrink.

When varicose veins begin to cause discomfort or become painful Karimi recommends seeking medical attention.

“Some people, in addition to pain and discomfort, feel a swelling in their legs. If that

goes untreated ... they can experience discoloration and thickening of the skin. The absolute worst case is, they can go on to develop ulcers in the leg.”

Karimi said that is very rare. In most cases, the progression stops with the swelling.

Allyson Landphair, a nurse practitioner at Cedar Valley Vein Clinic, said simple steps like eating better, exercising more and wearing compression or support stockings can ease the pain and swelling in minor cases.

When those changes aren’t enough both medical professionals recommend additional treatments. Small clusters of veins can be injected with the same medicine used for spider vein, Karimi said. If there are multiple areas with varicose veins doctors can also make small incisions near the vein and physically remove it from the body.

In some cases, the varicose veins are caused by a malfunctioning great saphenous vein, a large superficial vein in the leg and thigh.

Valves on the vein are supposed to ensure that blood flows from the feet to the groin, but when the valves become leaky they can lead to the formation of varicose veins.

Radio frequency and laser ablation procedures both burn the vein from the inside. Karimi said the minimally invasive procedures are much preferred over past procedures which literally stripped the large vein from a person’s leg. He said that in some cases stripping is still required because the great saphenous vein is too close the surface and burning the vein would leave permanent scars on the leg.

Many people are aware that their hearing has deteriorated but are reluctant to seek help.

Perhaps they don’t want to acknowledge the problem, are embarrassed by what they see as a weakness, or believe that they can “get by”

oday’s fashions dare more than ever. Even shirts and sweaters show some skin. You might find yourself wondering just how much skin to bare.

“You have to be careful with bare as you get past 40 or you run the risk of looking older,” says TV stylist Christine Schwab, the Boomer-age author of “The Grown-up Girl’s Guide to Style” (HarperCollins, 2006).

Being too covered up, especially in dark colors, can be dowdy and hot, she says, but showing lizard skin on the chest or veins on the legs isn’t much better.

• Sheer fabrics and loose layers give the illusion of being bare without revealing too much.

“A sheer blouse can give you a sense of bareness but can be billowing too,” says Talbots fashion spokeswoman Betsy Thompson. “When you’re talking about sheer fabrics, sheer doesn’t have to be nude.”

• Anything made from natural fibers furthers the summery vibe.

“I love a button-down white shirt. You wear it with a really pretty lacy white bra underneath and maybe you get a glimpse of lace through the shirt or you leave one extra but-

ton open,” Schwab says.

• Try white ribbed tank tops almost anything, as well as tissue-weight, long-sleeve T-shirts worn under sleeveless ones.

• Wear open, interesting necklines, says Thompson. “A little goes a long way. ... It could be a bateau, a one-shoulder or a plunging neckline.”

• Sleeveless tops are standard, but the armhole position is important. Think about where it hits you and the angles.

• The same thing happens with shorts and swimsuits: The line is more important than the actual length or leg opening.

• Don’t wear too-tight pants, shorts or skirts, even if you’re fit. It’s a sign you’re trying to hard to look youthful.

• Try body-shaping undergarments. “I think your eyes naturally travel — you’ve seen people give the once-over — and if nothing is distracting, it’ll improve your overall look,” says Spanx spokeswoman Misty Elliot. “But muffin top and belly bulge are really noticeable.”

• Switch to a camisole with built-in bra and midriff shaper.

Are Hearing Problems Keeping You From Enjoying Life?

hink changing jobs is difficult?

It can be even harder if you’re a baby boomer.

Although there are federal laws against age discrimination, some employers may be reluctant to hire older workers, concerned about how long they’ll stay and the higher salaries they may demand.

But the traditional retirement age of 65 is fading, just as the 77-million-strong, baby-boom generation begins hitting it. The idea of lifetime job tenure, in which people stay in one job for their entire career, is also disappearing, and that can be good news for those looking to make a move.

Companies that are more thinly staffed than in the past may well be “looking for someone who can come in and do the job,” without needing a lot of training or supervision, said John Challenger, CEO of the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Workers in their 50s or older can bring that added value, he said.

With the aging of the baby boomers — the generation born between 1946 and 1964 — the percentage of workers 55 and older in the labor force is expected to jump from 19.5 percent in 2010 to 25.2 percent by 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For those contemplating new jobs, Challenger said it’s easier to change

industries than to change functions.

“If you’re a salesperson in a professional services firm, you can go do that in a banking organization,” he said, as an example.

That’s also important if you’re trying to maintain the same level of income. “If you go to something brand new, you’re not going to hold income,” he said.

When writing resumes, boomers should highlight their accomplishments over the previous five or 10 years, even if takes more than a single page. And networking is critical, he said. This is the time for baby boomers to join civic, community, charitable or other organizations, and get to know new people. It’s through these relationships that people find jobs, Challenger said.

Like other workers, many boomers are looking for a job that “gives them room for growth, is challenging and meaningful.”

INDUSTRY SEES CHANGES AS BABY BOOMERS KEEP SKIING

he ski industry around the country is responding to a new demographic that’s hitting the slopes in increasing numbers — senior skiers.

Baby boomers, part of the generation that first propelled skiing to mainstream popularity in the United States, are staying on the slopes for far longer, and in greater numbers, than anyone imagined possible a decade ago.

According to an annual study conducted by the National Ski Areas Association, the percentage of people ages 55 to 64 on the slopes has more than doubled to 9.2 percent since the 199798 ski season. And the number of skiers 65 and older has been inching up every year as well.

“Back in the 1980s and even the 1990s, people got to be 50, 60 years old and they just figured they were old and they stopped,” said Troy Hawks, spokesman for the National Ski Areas Association. Now, there are so many 70-plus skiers that many ski resorts have stopped offering lift ticket discounts for that age group.

Advances in ski technology are allowing skiers to stay active well into their 70s. And the demands of older skiers are shaping the industry’s products and services.

Ski Barn, a four-store retail chain based in Paramus, with stores in Paramus, N.J., recently invested in a $3,000 boot press that allows it to custom-shape ski boots to create extra space for bunions or other ailments of aging feet. The stores also can outfit older skiers with remote-controlled boot heaters; custom insoles for fallen arches; and shorter, hourglassshaped skis that can make a 50-something skier feel like he

or she is 20-something again.

On the slopes, “50 is the old 40,” said Ski Barn owner Ray Fallon. “There’s definitely plenty of 50-, 60- and 70-plus skiers out there.”

Fallon can relate to the needs of his over-50 customers.

He’s 50, he’s been skiing for 30 years, and these days he doesn’t head for a day on the slopes without his custom-boot insoles and heated boot liners.

His father, Dick Fallon, 82, the founder of Ski Barn, skied throughout his 70s.

The Ski Barn also is selling more of the shorter, shaped skis that make downhill runs a bit easier for slightly overthe-hill athletes.

“They can carve right into a turn and can hold in ice,” Fallon said. “They give you more control, more fun. You can have a guy who now only skies eight to 10 times a year and still be able to ski at his advanced speeds from when he was younger.”

Rob Megrin, marketing director at the Mountain Creek resort in Vernon, N.J., says switching to the shaped skis is like “going from manual steering to power steering. That’s what the whole hourglass and shaped ski has done for the industry,” he said. “It has allowed people to ski with less effort, and that allows people to stay in the sport a little longer.”

Grooming technology also has reached a level, Megrin said, “that we haven’t seen before. When one of these machines makes a pass, and then you ski over it, it’s like, ’Wow — OK, I can do this, I can do this for quite a while.”’

HOPI MESAS Some native American sites are best visited with a guide. Our guide to the Hopi reservation, Gary Tso, met us at the Hopi Cultural Center, a museum, hotel and restaurant where the lunch crowd was split between locals and tourists. About 13,000 Hopi live on the reservation in Arizona, entirely surrounded by the Navajo Nation. Tso took us to villages including Old Oraibi, which dates to 1150 and claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States.

CHACO CANYON Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico is the center of a culture that flourished from the 800s to the 1100s. It is run by the National Park Service and is accessible only via dirt road.

Our guide there was Larry Baker, executive director of the nearby Salmon Ruins museum, who showed us the partially excavated ruins of Pueblo Bonito, Chetro Ketl and Casa Rinconada, with its Great Kiva (a room or chamber) 63 feet across.

The tour to Balcony House involves climbing three ladders and crawling through a 12-foot tunnel. The inhabitants managed the vertiginous climb carrying water, roof beams and corn for their storerooms. Some sites at Mesa Verde close for the season after Oct. 20.

CANYON DE CHELLY Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona is managed jointly by the Park Service and the Navajo Nation. Visitors can take the White House Ruins Trail to the canyon floor, a 2.5-mile hike that the senior members of our party judged too steep to try, or they can go with a Navajo guide. There are 1,000-foot canyon walls and petroglyphs left by the Ancestral Puebloans and the later-arriving Navajo. There are Ancestral Puebloan dwellings like the 900-year-old White House Ruins.

hen the developers of Kiawah Island Golf Resort gave golf course architect Pete Dye a 2 -mile strip of sandy beachside property more than 20 years ago and asked him to create a golf course, Dye did more than build 18 holes.

I

hate to harp, but it’s time for my annual plea to give more respect to sauvignon blanc.

Sauvignon blanc has always played second fiddle to chardonnay.

Even today California has six chardonnay vines planted for every stick of sauvignon blanc.

I have no problem with chardonnay. It can be extra-fruity and rich, with flavors from pineapples to caramel apples. But sometimes it can be too opulent, too sweet, too heavy to go well with food.

Sauvignon blanc is light and lively, zingy, fruity, tinged with minerality — often a much better match with food. If that doesn’t convince you, maybe this will. The average sauvignon blanc is a few bucks cheaper than a chardonnay of equal quality.

ethany Salomon knows her 77-year-old mother wants to spend time with the youngest members of their family.

So Salomon does what she can to ensure that Mary Chaitoff is prepared when her 5-year-old great-granddaughter, Macaela Salomon, comes to visit. The two women bought special toys for Macaela to keep at Chaitoff’s Pepper Pike, Ohio, home. They look for television shows or videos they can enjoy together. And they plan day trips to Cleveland to visit museums.

With Americans living longer than ever before, many children now have the opportunity to know their great-grandparents. It’s a relationship, however, that other family members can help along; the very young and the very old often are wary of each other.

Grandparents and parents can be a good go-between. With a bit of planning, it’s possible to make the encounters enjoyable for everyone.

Children have just as much to gain, said Susan Bosak, director of the Legacy Project, an online resource for families looking to build generational bonds.

“These relationships give you something you can’t get any place else,” said Bosak, who writes about the grandparent bond in her latest book, “The Little Something” (TCP Press, March 2008). “Children have a better sense of who they are.”

Before getting the oldest and youngest generations together, engage in some “casual planning,” recommended Robin Hewitt, who wrote “The Joyous Gift of Grandparenting” (Random House, April 2008) with her husband, Doug.

Having a few activities ready will give the visit some structure and keep children from getting restless.

The schedule might include playing video games, looking at old photos or giving everyone a disposable camera to take family portraits. Don’t worry if the great-grandparents have never picked up a joystick. The kids will be excited to show them how to play. Then let the great-grandparents teach everyone a card game.

Great-grandparents should pick one skill or interest that they’d like to pass on to the younger generations.

Preheat grill to high. Grill skirt steak about 5 minutes, or until of desired doneness, turning once.

APPLE HAZELNUT LINZER COOKIES

CINNAMON GLAZED APPLES

2 cups all-purpose flour

3 medium Granny Smith apples

2/3 cup finely ground hazelnuts (about 2 ounces)

3/4 cup apple juice

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 2/3 cup granulated sugar 1 egg

1 jar (3 ounces) Cinnamon Drops Sprinkles 1/4 cup firmly-packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts, toasted 2 tablespoons raisins Pinch of salt

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

4 ounces (1/2 8-ounce package) cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup apple butter

2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar

Red Icing Color, optional

Pinch nutmeg (optional)

Confectioners’ sugar, optional

Preheat oven to 350 F.

In small bowl, combine flour, hazelnuts, nutmeg and salt; set aside. In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; mix well. Add flour mixture; mix only until combined. Form dough into 2 disks, about 1 in. thick; wrap in plastic wrap.

Refrigerate 2 hours or until firm enough to roll.

Cut a small amount off top and bottom of each apple so it will stand up. Cut apple in half horizontally. Scoop out core, leaving about 1/4 in. at the edges. Do not core all the way to the end of the apple. Pour juice and cinnamon drops into the bottom of a 9 in. square baking dish. Arrange apple halves in baking dish. In small bowl, stir together brown sugar, walnuts, raisins and salt. Pack about 2 tablespoons of mixture into hollowed core of each apple.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

On floured surface, roll out dough 1/8-inch thick (keep dough in refrigerator until ready to roll). Using square Linzer Cutter, cut half of the dough with 3-in. cutter and place on prepared pan. Cut remaining dough with 3-in. cutter with insert; transfer to second baking sheet. Form scraps into a disk, chill at least 30 minutes and reroll.

Bake 7-9 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool on cookie sheet 2 minutes; remove to cooling grid and cool completely.

Tint apple butter with red icing color, if desired. Spread whole cookies with apple butter; if desired, lightly dust cookies with cut-outs with confectioners’ sugar and gently sandwich cookies together.

Makes about 32 sandwich cookies.

Bake 40-45 minutes, basting with juice every 10 minutes, until apples are easily pierced with a fork. Cool.

In small bowl, beat cream cheese with electric mixer until creamy. Add confectioners’ sugar and nutmeg; beat until smooth. Pipe onto cooled apples, or along side of plate.

These recipes score points for easy preparation, two serving sizes and making use of simple ingredients to prepare flavorful dinners for two people.

TRI-COLOR TARRAGON FETTUCCINE 4 ounces uncooked tri-color or plain fettuccine 3 ounce (1/2-inch thick) slice deli ham, cubed 1/2-inch 2 tablespoons butter 2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon leaves (see note) 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Lemon slices, if desired Cook fettuccine in 3-quart saucepan according to package directions. Drain.

Immediately return fettuccine to pan.

Add all remaining ingredients except lemon slices; toss lightly to coat.

To serve, spoon onto serving platter.

Garnish with lemon slices, if desired.

Note: Substitute 1/2 teaspoon dried tarragon leaves.
