S

itting down with the “Steel Magnolias” cast is like walking into a conversation among longtime friends at Truvy’s beauty shop. There’s an uncanny ability to finish each other’s sentences, some good-natured ribbing, and a few moments when hankies are needed to dab tears as they talk about the bond between the group of Southern women in Louisiana they portray on stage – and the real affection and respect shared by the ensemble cast that will last a lifetime. Patty Stilwill, Beverly McCusker, Michelle Rathe, Linda Merritt, Rebecca McCarty and Alta Schwab are cast as Ouiser, Clairee, M’Lynn, Truvy, Shelby

and Annelle, respectively, in the Waterloo Community Playhouse production of “Steel Magnolias.” The show opens tonight on the Hope Martin Theatre stage with performances through Sept. 13. “The cast came together really fast. This is the third time I’ve been in a production of ‘Steel Magnolias,’ and all those casts were really good, but this is the closest-knit cast of the three, and where age has mattered the least. Everyone here is a friend,” Stilwill says. “And we can dig at each other, but we do it with love. Just like our characters,” McCusker interjects, smiling. “I love you all,” Rathe tells her castmates, noting that “the cast’s relationships mirror the play, and I feel like we’ve
