Letter from the Head of School and Board of Trustees As we reflect on God’s greatness and provision to Westminster Catawba Christian School over the last year, we give thanks. We celebrated 20 years of Kingdom education at WCCS since the merger between Catawba and Westminster Christian, and were honored to celebrate 40 years since the first graduating class of Catawba Academy, the Class of 1973.

We continue to grow in the areas of biblical integration, technological advancement, and differentiated instruction with the support of our families, alumni, and community members.

This document serves as an annual report to our community, showing how your investment is making an eternal difference in the lives of our students. We continue to be committed to providing a vibrant, Christ-centered community celebrating the image of God in every person, nurturing the heart, educating the mind and inspiring the pursuit of God’s unique purpose.

Highlights from the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013: • We launched our international student program with 14 students from China, Korea, Vietnam, and Spain.

• More than 20 students made a commitment to Christ during our annual ReFuel conference in January.

• Over 300 alumni and friends joined us for our anniversary weekend in March, raising over $50,000 for our Annual Fund!

• 47 WCCS Seniors participated in commencement exercises in May, representing the largest graduating class in the history of the school.

• Because of a challenge gift to encourage new donors and increased giving to the Annual Fund, we received gifts totaling $88,917.76 from 86 new donors and 23 donors who elected to increase their giving from last year.

In this year of leadership transition with Dr. Maren Halvorson serving as interim Head of School, we are preparing for the next stage in the life of WCCS. Dr. Halvorson is focusing on the following tasks during this year: operational oversight; examination of board governance; alignment with Westminster Presbyterian Church; attention to enrollment trends; and positioning for a permanent Head of School. We especially ask for your prayers as we seek God’s leading in these areas.

• WCCS celebrated the largest graduating class in WCCS history, with 47 seniors in the Class of 2013.

• Launching our international student program, we welcomed 14 students from China, South Korea, Vietnam and Spain.

• Both Band and Art participated in the ACSI Fine Arts Festival, with one art student and both bands receiving superior ratings.

• In 2013, WCCS students scored in the top 18% nationally on reading scores and the top 22% in math scores on the Stanford 10 Achievement Tests.

• Senior, Graelyn Humiston was named as a National Merit Finalist in 2013. She was chosen from more than 1.5 million high school seniors for her accomplishments, skills and potential to succeed in rigorous college courses. Her achievements at WCCS attracted attention from Furman University, where she has been named a Bell Tower Scholar.

• The Class of 2013 had five student athletes sign letters of intent to play on the collegiate level, the largest number of students to sign in the school’s history.

High Academic Standards Westminster Catawba Christian School approaches every area of life from a biblical worldview, and nowhere is this more critically foundational than in the design of the curriculum. Students receive a comprehensive education which includes biblical studies at every grade level along with science, math, language arts, social studies, and enrichments in art, music, foreign language, physical education, and library. Reading and math are at the core of elementary school academics, while middle and high school students select from a number of honors and Advanced Placement classes.

High academic standards begin with a selective admissions process, and are maintained throughout the grades in a developmentally appropriate program designed to foster self-confidence, a love of learning, and the discovery of individual capabilities.

Academic awards, honor rolls, and other incentives, such as membership in the National Honor Society, are offered to motivate students toward excellence. Students in middle and high school are also required to maintain an acceptable level of academic achievement in order to participate in interscholastic athletics.

Biblical Integration Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to integrating biblical truth in all subject areas at every grade level. Students are discipled and mentored by faculty and staff who desire to see students conformed to the image of Christ.

Instructional Approaches Westminster Catawba Christian School recognizes that God has created each child with unique strengths and abilities and that learning can take place in a number of different ways. Through a variety of instructional approaches and the help of smaller class sizes, students are presented with challenging learning experiences that build on their individual strengths and optimize their God-given abilities, enabling them to better serve and glorify God. The programs offered through the EXCEL program are designed to assist the special needs of students with learning differences and exceptionalities and assists students in developing to their full potential. EXCEL strives to aid students in developing good workmanship qualities as well as a commitment to life-long learning.

Year in Review JULY/AUGUST Back to School Bash All WCCS students, grades 3k-12th gathered to celebrate the beginning of the school year. 01

High Cotton Sporting Clays Shoot In the last 20 years, this annual sporting clays event has raised over $350,000 for our school. Thanks to our board members, WCCS student trappers and all of our volunteers and participants who helped with this wonderful event. 04

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 11th Annual Super Saturday Varsity cheerleaders and football players shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with over 40 children in the community, grades K5-6th, and worked with students on football skills and cheerleading routines. 05

Rolling in Rock Hill For the second consecutive year, the WCCS Service Initiative participated in Rolling in Rock Hill. On Saturday, September 15, our 25 students and adult volunteers prepped and painted a home in less than five hours! 07

4K Triangle Parade On Friday, October 5, the 4K Preschool students celebrated the conclusion of their math unit about triangles with a parade! 08

I Never Saw Another Butterfly High school theater students presented this moving theatrical production about the Holocaust. The WCCS International Thespian Society and WCCS Elementary Campus Art Department later participated in the Houston Holocaust Museum’s Butterfly Project, constructing hand-crafted

14 butterflies representing children who perished during the Holocaust. 11

JANUARY/FEBRUARY ReFuel

Our 4th annual ReFuel took place on the Catawba Campus for 6th-12th grade on January 8-11 with over 20 students making a decision for Christ! 12

$500 Explore Lab Mini-Garden Grant WCCS Explore Lab was able to purchase new grow-lights through a $500 classroom mini-garden grant by the SC Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Rancher program. 13

Bring a Friend to School Day A big thank you to all of our families who helped promote our "Bring a Friend to School" day Friday, January 18. 14

National Signing Day On February 6, we recognized Aaron McCarley and Jake Wentworth who committed to playing football at Catawba College and Wheaton College, respectively.

Later in the year, three more students were honored, Nate Casey (Davidson College), Devante Jackson (Mars Hill College) and Nick Henderson (Presbyterian College) making 2012-2013 the largest senior class in school history to sign Letters of Intent to play on the collegiate level. 15

Chinese New Year We initiated a new WCCS tradition as we celebrated Chinese New Year with our international students and their host families. These students and families were joined by a number of faculty, staff and students. who enjoyed traditional foods and music, ending with a launching of Chinese lanterns into the night sky. 16

MARCH/APRIL ACSI Southeast Region Band Festival On March 22, the WCCS Concert and Jazz bands participated in the Association of Christian Schools International Southeast Region Band Festival. Both received a superior rating, the highest honor the judges can give. 17

20th/40th Anniversary Event

Grandparents Day Thanks to all those who came out for our Catawba Campus Grandparents' Day on Thursday, April 18!

We were honored to have Mrs. Lou Ardrey, grandmother of the Basha family, deliver our keynote address, challenging all grandparents to continue to be involved at WCCS. 20

Senior Service Trip

We celebrated with alumni and current families with a successful alumni reunion and Denim and Diamonds auction fundraiser that raised over $50,000 for our Annual Fund. 18

Our 2013 senior class had a great time serving the Lord and fellowshipping with one another in Barbados. Service projects included ministering in local hospitals and schools and doing light construction work around the YWAM ministry base. 21

ACSI Art Festival

Odyssey of the Mind

Five WCCS high school art students participated in the ACSI Art Festival on March 1. 11th grader, Su Kim, received a superior rating from the judges. 19

Our elementary team and middle school team competed in the state-wide Odyssey of the Mind tournament in Charleston in early spring. Both

24 teams did an outstanding job and the middle school team placed 3rd out of 7 teams in their division! 22

Student Leadership Retreat Approximately 25 rising high school students participated in a training and orientation session to prepare them for their roles as student leaders in the coming school year. This event was a significant piece of our leadership development for students, yielded an abundance of fresh ideas, and developed a concentrated focus for the coming school year. 23

Junior/Senior Prom We celebrated with our Junior/Senior Prom in the Magnolia Room at Laurel Creek. It was an elegant event with our southern themed Belles and Beaus that all our students and chaperones thoroughly enjoyed. 24

MAY/JUNE AACC Scholarship Awarded On Tuesday, May 7, we held our annual Academic Awards & Recognition Night. Student Tripp Nichols was recognized as the recipient of the AACC Scholarship and received $1,000 toward his senior year’s tuition at WCCS. 25

4th & 5th Grade History Curriculum

Matching Grant Challenge Met

Because of an anonymous donation, 4th and 5th grade teachers received new history curriculum entitled “Why America is Free” that focuses on our founders and their Christian values in establishing the nation. 27

A $25,000 matching gift challenge from an anonymous donor encouraged gifts from new donors and increased giving from current donors to the Annual Fund. Thank you to all our WCCS families and friends who helped us reach this goal.

Host Family Appreciation Dinner

Dominican Republic Trip

All host families for international students were honored with a special dinner on Thursday, May 9. 28

WCCS sent 23 students and 8 chaperones to the village of Juan Tomás in the Dominican Republic to work at the Fountain of Life Christian School.

During the week, our team of 31 was joined by two WCCS alumni working on various projects including construction, VBS, painting and cleaning.
