Westfield Community Association Newsletter No. 158 November 2016

A letter from my grandson thanking me for having him to stay did not include the fun he had helping with the deliveries of the newsletter! It was good to have help from all four of them - I did not hear from anyone that their piles were short. Thank you to all helpers in Westfield who take the newsletter to individual doors (page 7). A couple of areas need someone willing to deliver promptly (dates below) please: Moat Lane, Stonestile Lane - (The Ridge end). If you have spare plastic bags from clothes shopping, not flimsy, that would help protect newsletters from inclement weather, please leave them at Westfield News. Thinking of 2017 and New Year Resolutions (page 19), the WCA Council has a couple of vacancies and would welcome new faces. The Community Hall, next to the school, caters for everyone from the school to the badminton and short mat players on a regular basis, one off community events to private parties. This is your opportunity to be part of the community. The fete takes place each year and participation is always welcome from the planning stage. Thank you to the resident for nominating the fete this year in the Hastings Observer 1066 Community Awards which took place during Hastings Week in October. Thank you to everyone for the part played in the community life of Westfield. Have a happy Christmas and a healthy, peaceful, busy 2017. Pauline Filsell-Page, Editor

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2016 Armistice Day 11 November

Remembrance Sunday falls on 13 November 2016

Collection period: 27 October - 12 November Please give generously Door to door collections take place in Westfield, also local businesses have boxes.

LIVE ON: TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN AND THE FUTURE OF THE LIVING The Royal Bri sh Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community ‐ serving men and women, veterans, and their families. All net Poppy Appeal income raised goes into the Royal Bri sh Legion Benevolent Fund and is made available to beneficiaries according to need, regardless of where they live, and includes beneficiaries who qualify overseas. The symbol of the poppy today represents Remembrance of the past and hope for the future; it is red because of the natural colour of field poppies, not to reflect the colour of blood. The poppy is a humble, neutral and universal symbol of Remembrance and hope. Poppies are environmentally friendly; the petals and leaf are made of paper and the stem and centre of recyclable plas c. 4

MONTAGUE ALBERT GODFREY Private – 93619 – 2/5th Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment), 178th (2/1st Sherwood Forester) Brigade, 59th (2nd North Midland) Division. Born 13th January 1899 in Battersea, Surrey the son of Montague (art metal worker) and Irene Kate Godfrey of 27, Chatham Road, Battersea. Montague was baptized at St. Marks, Battersea on 1st February 1899. The 1901 census records Montague, then aged 2 years, living with his parents and his widowed grandfather Thomas Godfrey at 25, Chatham Road. Montague’s father and grandfather were then working in the family business of ‘general art works’. By 1911 Montague’s parents had taken over the licence of the ‘The Balmoral Castle’, Glamorgan Street, Pimlico. The household then consisted of Montague; his parents; two younger brothers Frank and Peter, a cousin Horace, a servant and a nurse. By 1915 the family had moved to Westfield where they had taken over the running of the ‘New Inn’. On reaching the age of 18 Montague received his Military Service Papers calling him to his nearest recruiting office in Hastings. He initially joined the Army Service Corps (service number 301323), but was later transferred to the Sherwood Foresters before embarking for France sometime in late 1917 or early 1918. On 13th April 1918 the 59th Division was ordered to reinforce the Lys area on the French–Belgium border immediately south of Ypres. This part of the front had now become the focus of the German Army being part of Operation Georgette an element of their spring offensive which had commenced some three weeks earlier. The British Second Army under the command of General Plumer was under severe pressure as German storm-troopers forced them back toward the town of Bailleul in an attempt to take Ypres and from there the Channel Ports. Whilst the 177th Brigade was ordered to assist the neighbouring 19th Division the remainder of the 59th Division, including the 2/5th Sherwood Foresters, moved to the small village of Westouter just over the border in Belgium. From here they were ordered to hold some 6000 yards of front line near the neighbouring village of Loker. This they were only able to hold very thinly. On 14th April, along with the rest of the British line in this sector, the 176th and 178th Brigades came under violent attack. The line was penetrated, but restored later that day. However, it was not long before the overwhelming pressure told and the thinly held line was broken, forcing the 59th Division to fall back in disarray on Mont Noir with heavy losses. The town of Bailleul fell to the Germans on the 15th. It was on this day that Montague was killed in action. He was one of 27 men from the 2/5th Battalion killed in action over the three days of fighting – 13th to 15th April. He has no known grave and is today commemorated on the Ploegstreert Memorial, Belgium. After the war Montague’s parents moved to Fair Green, Mitcham, Surrey where they took over ‘The Old Nags Head’. 5

UK POWER NETWORKS: In September 2016 - a new national telephone number ”105” was launched by electricity network operators for customers to call should they need to report or get information about a power cut in their area. A consumer awareness campaign should be running through to Spring 2017 to include PR, media advertising, social media and co-ordinated messaging through partner channels. Key points to note about this FREE service are: Customers can call 105 no matter who they choose to buy electricity from. Dialling 105 will put customers through to their local electricity network operator. 105 is just one of the ways to contact your electricity network operators. You can also contact them by ‘phone or via their website and most network operators are on social media too. Customers can also call 105 if they spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put anyone in danger. If there’s a serious immediate risk, they should also call the emergency services. Vulnerable customers who would like to sign up to our ‘Priority Services Register’ can still either call 0800~169~9970 or email psr@ukpowernetworks.co.uk or apply online at ukpowernetworks.co.uk/priority

People’s page Letter to the Editor

To all new residents ‘Welcome to Westfield’

I just wanted to express how much I appreciate the community newsletter. I feel it is an important part of our village life.

Congratulations to Daniel and Emma on their engagement; Dan popped the question on the conclusion of their USA holiday.

If someone new moves into the village they have an instant guide to the area (we had a new neighbour, several years ago now, but they were delighted to see all that was available when they arrived).

Bereavements

There are still residents who do not have access to the internet or do not want to be involved with social media and these people would lose a very important way of keeping in touch with village life.

Condolences to the families of Joyce Avard Tony Boulter Joan Wood

And thirdly, as a distributor, the wander I have around my road allows me to touch base with neighbours whom I rarely see but enjoy a brief doorstep catch up with.

We know people who knit for charity, if you have spare knitting wool please leave at Strawberry Fair Chapel Lane. Thank you

Long live the West ield Community Newsletter J.G.

KEEP OUR SEAS CLEAN A reminder of the local campaign launched in 2013 but still running today: People are concerned about the quality of our sea water due to the wrong stuff being washed down our toilets and sinks, which then pollutes our rivers and the sea. Pollution is also caused by the waste water from our dishwashers or washing machines being connected to the wrong waste pipes. We can make simple changes to keep our rivers and seas clean so our beaches can be amongst the best beaches around. What goes down washes up …… MYTH: Baby wipes that are flushed vanish REALITY: they don’t, baby wipes can cause blockages in our sewer, leading to pollution in our sea. ONLY FLUSH: the ‘3P’s - Pee, Poo and Paper! DON’T FLUSH: anything else - bin it! When explained, some people are unaware at the damage done to the sewer by items such as baby wipes, cleaning wipes and other items that have flushable and biodegradable on them, also the length of time that items take to biodegrade - perhaps the labelling is misleading. The items can be flushed, it is just that they block up the sewers. Fats. Oils and Grease (F.O.G.s) MYTH: Fats, Oils & Grease breakdown and disappear in the sewer or treatment works REALITY: they harden, block pipes and cause blockages leading to pollution in the sea DON’T: wash cooking oil or fat down the sink DO: Use a paper towel or newspaper to absorb fat or let it harden, then bin it. Wrongly connected water pipes MYTH: all drains go to treatment works REALITY: they don’t there are two drains - one goes directly into the sea and one goes to the treatment works DON’T: assume that they are correct or take shortcuts and plumb into the wrong pipe.

chool reopened for a new academic year on Wednesday 7 September when we greeted many new faces with thirty new children in our Reception class and Miss Dale, our new Year 2 teacher. We have now all settled into our routines with the children enjoying all the fast-paced activities that autumn brings; blustery winds, conker collecting and harvest celebrations. Our varied topics for this term include Dinosaurs and Fossils, WWII, 1066 Battle of Hastings and Beside the Seaside plus we have already been out on a number of school trips to Newhaven Fort, Blue Reef Aquarium, Battle Abbey and Pett Level seashore for a fossil hunt. Many of our Key Stage 2 children have been taking part in swimming lessons, football, hockey and netball clubs and a few of our quickest runners from Years 5 & 6 have been selected to compete in local cross country running competitions. To support their ‘You and Me’ topic, our Year 1 class have been delighted with recent visits from the ambulance and police services. In weeks to come, our Year 2 children will get inspired by their ‘Be Inspirational’ topic and have the opportunity to learn about Florence Nightingale, Guide Dogs and a host of other experiences that inspire us in everyday life. As we are now into Term 2, thoughts are turning to the ever-nearing festive season. Don’t forget to come and join us at our Christmas Fayre on Friday 9 December from 3.15pm for fun and festive games. Our Key Stage 1 classes are working on the annual Nativity play to be performed to parents and guardians on 6 and 7 December; our Reception class children will be putting on their own Christmas tableau performance in early December too. Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a good carol service and our Years 5 & 6 pupils are tuning their voices for concerts at Whitegates Retirement Home and Westfield Church. School breaks for the Christmas holidays on Wednesday 21 December and returns WESTFIELD SCHOOL PTA for a brand new year on Tuesday 3 January

fter a summer break members of Westfield WI resumed monthly meetings in September, when local glass artist Ruth Ward took us through her beautiful world of stained glass. Ruth had brought some stunning pieces of her work as well as photos, and one or two members had a go at cutting glass shapes. The following week around thirty members enjoyed an outing to Bewl Water, with a boat trip followed by a meal. Tony Smith told us about his interest with ‘Life and Fossils on the Seashore’ in October, and we will now look at sea-weeds in a new light! Members enjoyed a hilarious talk from Ann Chance at the Rother Group meeting in Robertsbridge a few days later. Not content with being variously a musician, a scuba diver, a paraglider and learning to fly, she learnt to ride a horse at the age of 64 because she had an urge to take part in a genuine American-cowboy cattle drive, which she did in Wyoming and Oklahoma, and finally, of course, in Montana. Our Annual Meeting is on 10th November and the competition is a home-made toy. We will be taking part in the Rother Group Carols at Brede on 5th December, and the Christmas party meeting follows shortly after, with a homemade Christmas tree fairy as the competition. Westfield WI meets in the Parish Hall at 2.15 pm on the second Friday of the month, and new members are very welcome. The WI offers book club and craft afternoons and opportunities to attend County workshops and events. Ring The ladies of Westfield W.I. are able to provide teas for up to 50 people in the Valerie Walkinshaw (President) on Parish Hall, subject to availability, at 07927 403200 if you would like more £5.00 per head. WESTFIELD GUIDES and BROWNIES This report combines the Brownies and Guides as we have had so little time for meetings since the autumn term started. The Guides had a wonderful time on their sleepover when they were able to cook biscuits to eat with their late night hot chocolate. They also had the opportunity to decorate sun catchers, cook breakfast on a camp fire inventing a new sausage dish as they went, picnic and sing sea shanties on the beach and decorate pebbles plus going wild in the play park. Then back at meetings they have flown kites, made windmills and did splatter painting. The Brownies started this term with only three original members but our taster day brought in nine more girls who should be enrolled by the time you read this. All girls are working on the new programme and finding it great fun. We still have spaces for more girls in both units especially Brownies so if you missed the taster day or your daughter is not yet 7 then please contact me when she would like to come along and see us. There is no commitment to join until a girl is ready. Girls usually join guides from the age of 11. Sally Cruttenden 01424 754927 or 0784 050 6426 16

1ST WESTFIELD SCOUT GROUP

mentioned in the last Newsletter that we urgently needed a Scout Leader to keep the Troop open; unfortunately none has been found to take on this role. Sadly we had to close and the remaining Scouts have joined the Brede Troop. We are still trying to find a Scout Leader and Assistant in order that Scouts can be revived at Westfield. A Beaver Leader is also being sought as, at present, Frances Richardson, our Group Scout Leader, has taken over that role with help from Assistant Clare Hammond; we need an enthusiastic person willing to have a go in providing exciting activities for Beavers. The age range is 6 to 8 years. Beavers meet on a Tuesday evening from 5 to 6 pm. If anyone is interested in becoming a Leader please contact Frances on 754548 as soon as possible. On a more cheerful note we went to Thriftwood, Essex for the Summer Camp where three Cubs, six Scouts and three Explorers enjoyed the range of activities - rafting, kayaking and cresta run being the best ones. We had a really great time and, of course in August this year, good weather. We are holding the usual Jumble Sales in November JUMBLE SALE and probably February to raise funds to help with 12 November & ?February expenses for our HQ. We are also planning another 2.30 pm Westfield Community Hall Murder Mystery evening for March, no Workhouse Lane date fixed as yet. This is always a fun Admission 50p adults evening and very well attended so DONATIONS welcome from 11am please look out for the date and details Items no bigger than a chair, in the near future. neither computer monitors nor TVs Rosemary Bond – Secretary 01424 754080 rosebond@btinternet.com

Richard’s Ramblings

FORCE FED

Even though Sussex Police and I have parted company, I believe that I must share the following. As stated in previous “Ramblings”, the standard of catering in Sussex Police was generally very good indeed. The catering manager, based at H.Q was known as “Mr Pastry”, after a comedian named I seem to recall, Richard Hearne. Standards did though, sometimes slip. During the miner's strike of the early 1980's I made my first acquaintance with the “Doggy Bag”. As the name suggests this was a small brown carrier bag and generally contained a sandwich or roll, a chocolate bar, apple or orange, sausage roll and a bottled drink. We were issued one each for the journey from H.Q to Yorkshire. An hour or two into the trip, chaps started to consume the contents but at the back of the bus there was a commotion. A sergeant went to investigate. Someone had found a pork pie in his doggy bag and the date on the wrapper had long since passed. Other pies were examined and all found to be out of date. There is no evidence to suggest that those of my colleagues who had eaten the pies without checking the date suffered any ill effects. On arrival in Yorkshire the offending pies were fed to any stray dogs which came our way. The animals lucky enough to receive a pie promptly buried them. Back in Sussex, complaints were made. We were informed that the pies had been frozen previously and properly thawed prior to issue so were quite fit for consumption. It is significant however that the people travelling to the mines the following week found that their pork pies were protected with cling film, the original wrappers having been discarded. On route to a political conference in Brighton some years ago the bus stopped at the Drill Hall. We all entered the building to find a fairly major catering operation in progress. Smiling, cheerful West Indian ladies proudly stood behind dishes of fried eggs, sausages, chips, baked beans and all manner of lovely grub. As we started to queue we were told by someone that this was not for us and we were only entitled to a cup of tea. Our dinner would be supplied by the conference hotel. So a couple of hours later at the hotel we entered the dining room. The menu was curry and no alternative except a vegetarian version. I hate the stuff. Being somewhat stubborn I went without. Bonfire nights were usually good for fish and chips. A voucher was issued to us to be exchanged at a single venue. The only problem was the large, and I mean large number of people who got there before us. Battle Bonfire was very good. A local restaurant which was fairly upper class volunteered to cater for the police contingent only. It was usually a three course meal, cooked to the highest standard. In the late 1990's I attended a protest demonstration in Hastings. The demonstrators were very good and late afternoon, after a long day they packed up and went home. We, however, were sent to Brighton and Hove where a similar demonstration had turned ugly. We were shown into the briefing room while a supervisor went to get instructions. On each chair was a “Doggy Bag”. We took possession of these only to be told that we could go home. On route, we received a radio message to return and replace the Doggy Bags which were not meant for us. Regrettably we had to decline; the contents had already been Best wishes, Richard Perchard. greedily consumed. 21

Westfield Parish Church From the Curate…….. I am writing this at the beginning of October and whilst the east wind is full of autumn chill the sunshine is still very warm. The change of season is reflected in Church as well as in the weather. We’ve just celebrated Harvest and have started the planning for the Daffodil Service at the beginning of November when we remember loved ones we have lost, Remembrance Sunday on 13 November at 10.30am, and of course Christmas. I’m wondering if we’ll see daffodils in bloom at Churchfield alongside the Christmas lights like last year. The weddings are over for the year and the blossom in the churchyard did its best to contribute to some lovely photographs in the early summer. This year we’re hoping the churchyard will make its own gentle contribution to the Christmas illuminations in Westfield. The Christmas Tree Festival theme this year will be Christmas Feasts and it’s always impressive how much imagination and inventiveness go in to the displays. We hope our new Parents and Toddlers Group who meet in the church every Wednesday between 1.30 and 3pm in term-time will take up the challenge of doing their own tree without eating all the decorations first! Our Harvest gifts from Westfield School and the Church were taken to Hope Kitchen (see page 28) in Hastings to be transformed into hot soup and comforting food for their guests who are often homeless and struggling with difficult issues in their lives. Winter is a tough time if you are sleeping rough and not in the best of health. At Christmas we remember that God came to us in Jesus, a baby born in poverty in a stable because there was no room at the inn. God does it all from love and Christmas means that in the place where God was homeless, all people are welcomed home. If we take some time this Christmas to make space for Jesus we will find a presence invading our lives that is made of love. As you make plans for family celebrations, lists of presents to buy or make, food shopping and cooking preparations, there is also a lot going on in church from the School Carol Service, Christingles, Tree Festival, Carol Services etc. All the details will be in the Christmas Card which will hopefully fall onto your mat during Advent. Join us to give thanks for the best gift of all, the birth of Jesus among us. Wishing you every blessing for Christmas and a peaceful and happy New Year, Joy

Activity in my Westfield Garden Feeding the birds has made an impressive difference to our bird visitors this year. We decided to mainly provide sunflower hearts which are high energy, no waste and mess free as they are easy to eat with no husks. They have attracted a wide variety of species alongside the usual blackbirds, doves, pigeons and starlings. A pheasant visited earlier in the year along with a brief visit from a Kestrel (photo right). Greenfinches, goldfinches (photo left) and starlings with their young have arrived in flocks throughout the summer, amounting to well over 50 birds in the garden at one time by the end of the breeding season. It's been a real treat! Please remember hygiene is crucial to prevent disease and feeders should be cleaned regularly along with providing fresh water. For further information check out the RSPB website: www.rspb.org.uk and don’t forget to take part in The Big Garden Birdwatch 28 - 30 January 2017. Ed. Thanks to Lyn Barton for words and photos

Please remember: Hedgehogs use wood piles meant for burning. As many ‘West ield Wildlife’ followers will know, Hedgehogs have become a rare sighting these days. We are therefore asking everyone that whenever they intend to light a bon ire to check that no Hedgehogs have decided to hibernate underneath. Also if you live in the parish and see a Hedgehog, dead or alive, please inform ‘West ield Wildlife’ by visiting the website. https://west ieldwildlife.wordpress.com/ Photo: Annie Nijhuis A rescued baby hedgehog, taken to Mallydams, Fairlight earlier this year

No single garden is enough for hedgehogs; to help them survive they need streets and neighbourhoods of linked-up gardens which means access holes made in wooden fences. The hedgehog’s natural diet mainly consists of slugs, ground beetles, caterpillars and worms but when these become scarce put a shallow dish of water and supplementary feeding in a sheltered area of your garden around sunset. Food could be any combination of meat-based dog or cat food, unsalted chopped or crushed peanuts, sunflower hearts, dried meal worms but never bread and milk. Place a custom-made hedgehog home or build a log or leaf pile in a quiet corner of your garden. Hedgehogs can remain active well into November and December and will often move nesting sites during hibernation. Do not disturb hibernating hedgehogs as it may cause them to stir and use up valuable energy reserves. Many people love hedgehogs. 24

Westfield Horticultural Society What a glorious autumn we have had this year. The Autumn Show in September was spectacular with the glorious colours and we have celebrated autumn with our Grand Pumpkin competition in late October. Floral Art classes are continuing, if you are interested in joining, please get in touch. We post photographs of the floral art arrangements and classes on our Facebook page along with other activities and events that take place throughout the year. If you use Facebook, find and like Westfield Horticultural Society to see what we get up to. In October we held our AGM where two members of the Committee stepped down and we welcomed a new one. The committee is now made up of the following people: Catherine Collingwood (Chair), James Easthope (Treasurer), Tricia Oakland (Membership Secretary), Jackie Fellows, Nicky Briscall, Melanye Richmond, Lindsay Hunt, Linda Baker (committee members). We were sad to say goodbye to our President Camilla Buchanan who has supported us with her guidance and deep knowledge of the WHS for many years. However, we were delighted to offer and be accepted by John Paige and welcome his expertise as our new President. Our Pumpkin Competition did not have the turn out we had in 2015, but we wish to thank Patrick at the New Inn for hosting us and those that were there enjoyed some delicious pumpkin treats. The WHS has a page on www.westfieldvillage.co.uk with photos, notices, announcements and Show prize winners. Visit us there to find out about WHS events. From the archives: Westfield Horticultural Society donated ÂŁ200 to RHS Garden Wisley in 2000 towards their appeal for the Glasshouse which is now visited by millions of people, including Westfield Horticultural members on their annual outings. 25

Hope Kitchen is a soup kitchen in the centre of Hastings. We are open Thursday and Saturday evenings and welcome anyone over 18 to have some soup and sandwiches, a hot drink and a chat. Our aim is to provide a warm, dry and safe place to have something to eat and drink but also to offer advice and support in a welcoming and friendly environment. Some of our guests are homeless and many are poorly housed or sofa-surfing. We know that many struggle with alcohol and drug misuse and live with physical and mental health problems. As well as listening we can advise on where further help can be obtained for these issues and we have good links with other local agencies. What Are Our Aims? Our vision is “God’s love transforming lives”. Our mission is “to support people marginalised by poverty, homelessness and addictions; inspiring them to make changes in their lives. We aim to achieve this physically, emotionally and spiritually: † physically: through the provision of food, clothing, housing, signposting, advocacy and other practical support, † emotionally: through friendship, encouragement, lending a listening ear and through building confidence and self-belief, † spiritually: we recognize that people have a spiritual dimension to their lives and we hope to encourage that through prayer, reflection and fellowship. We believe that faith, hope, love and forgiveness (of oneself and others) can transform lives. What we do Farm Africa’s local staff provide the tools and expertise to enable smallholders in eastern Africa to increase their harvests, whether they farm crops, livestock, fish or the forest. We train them to be more commercial, adding value to surpluses by milling, drying, or turning their produce into products that fetch a higher price. With better food for their families and reliable incomes from their businesses, farmers can build for the future. Crops Eight out of ten rural Africans scrape their living from small plots. Soils are often poor, drought ever near. Farm Africa brings in the smart crops, drought-busting techniques and marketing skills that make such tough farming viable, profitable and sustainable. Livestock Where land is arid and crop cultivation hard, many farmers make their living by keeping animals. Animals are generally the family’s most valuable possession and Farm Africa helps with basic animal health services. Fisheries Pollution and overfishing have put wild fish stocks under pressure. The price of fish has rocketed, hitting people hard. Farm Africa is pioneering fish farming in Kenya, which ensures sustainable protein supplies and a major new source of income. Forests Deforestation destroys wildlife and dehydrates soil. We help forest communities replace traditional treecutting and wood and charcoal selling with new eco-friendly enterprises that protect biodiversity and provide a sustainable income for future generations. Climate Resilience If the current consumption of fossil fuels continues, global temperatures could rise by as much as 4⁰, which would have a devastating impact on farmers' livelihoods. Farm Africa helps smallholders to farm in ways which don't damage the environment, and to build resilience to future climate shocks. www.hopekitchenhastings.org.uk www.farmafrica.org 28

WESTFIELD COMMUNITY HUB enquiries; 01424 753942

T

Venue: The New Inn Friday mornings from 10am to noon

he Hub has been meeting at the New Inn on Friday mornings since February, with thanks to Patrick for making this possible. The attendance rate is about the midthirties and everyone is made very welcome. About thirty of us enjoyed a really good fish and chip supper on a diesel train from about the ‘50’s on the Kent & East Sussex Railway in August on one of the hottest days of the year. The wonderful people of Westfield contributed lots of homemade cakes and items for sale and raised £285 for Macmillan Cancer Support during the Coffee Morning at the end of September. This was rather more than in previous years and sets us a challenge of breaking the £300 barrier if this is repeated next year. The AGM on 21 October was quite short! A summary of our year was read out which included that funds have been boosted with various quizzes including one about confectionery, the monthly Play Your Cards Right game and the 50:50 draw which have all continued to be popular. Books and jigsaws are always available each week. A Christmas carol sing-a-long is provisionally arranged for the session on 16 December and early booking will be essential for a ’Hub’ Christmas lunch the previous Tuesday, the 13th. The New Inn will be closed for refurbishment from New Year’s Day, so there will be a break for us until 13th January. Sharron Bushell, Chairman

Our first half of the term has gone so fast whilst we have been busy settling all our new children and enjoying lots of messy play. The lovely weather in September and part of October helped us have time in our garden, then the wet and windy weather assisted our kite making and experiments whisking bubbles, paint and glitter in the puddles. We have been talking about Autumn collecting leaves, conkers, acorns etc using them in lots of activities such as painting, rubbing, weighing. The children used vegetables and herbs from the garden to make Autumn soup. The next part of the term is a busy messy one with so much glitter and art activities to celebrate Bonfire night and Christmas. We will be holding our 'Christmas Sing-along' to raise money for new equipment and toys so we will soon be practising our songs. The new hours are working well; we have more spaces filled this year than any other. We have spaces if you are interested and more than welcome to drop in at any time or contact Julie 0779 074 4404. PLEASE JOIN OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AND SEE ALL THE LOVELY ACTIVITIES WE OFFER PLUS UPDATES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING WITHIN OUR SETTING. We start the new term on Tuesday 3rd January 2017 34

Westfield Football Club As Chairman of Westfield FC, I had the great pleasure and honour to attend the Sussex County FA Awards Evening on Thursday 22nd September at the Amex American Express, Community Stadium, Brighton. The club received the “Charter Standard Development Club of the Year Award” as the Sussex County & South East Regional WINNER. This was enhanced by our very own Tom Saunters being the WINNER of the Sussex County “Young Volunteer of the Year”. It is certainly rewarding as a club, to be recognised for the dedicated work being carried out regarding our youth at the club. The youth section has grown to such an extent that we are running out of coaches to train them all, what a nice problem to have! What a future the club has with our up and coming youngsters. They have to look forward to training and playing at our new ground in the very near future – I hope soon! The youth of today are our future and must remain so. As a club, we try our best to reward loyalty. We have always tried to recruit our managers from within and have been rewarded in doing so. I hope, and believe, the youth of today will stay within the club and be our future adult teams. With three men’s teams we can cater for different abilities, currently with Sussex County level and a team in East Sussex Premier Division and Division 2, we have three good standard teams. Also a prospect of forming a ladies team in the future. The season is now well under way. The results are encouraging and the team building from last season, has seen better results throughout. It is early days and the League matches will soon be interrupted with the forthcoming Cups. A good run is always a boost and there is no reason why our teams should not do well. The 1st team has become a solid unit and the hard training is bringing with it some good results :Westfield 9 Ferring 0 League match Westfield 4 Hollington Utd 0 Cup match Westfield 2 Worthing Town Leisure 1 League match With a game in hand in the League, 3 points would move us to top three. Mick Kempster Chairman Westfield FC

At Westfield FC the youth side of the club is progressing along nicely, with circa 200 children now representing the football and many more attending our community sessions in association with Pass+Move. The season so far has seen lots of goals scored by all our teams and lots of smiles as the children continue to develop and enjoy themselves. We now have 16 youth teams and are in the process of launching a girls team, our popular girls only session on a Friday sees circa 10-15 girls attend each week (5.306.30 @ the Parish Field, £2pp). If your child is looking to get into football then contact Tony Harris 07545 813535.

Church Lane, A28 opposite Westfield Church Once again Autumn is upon us and the outdoor bowling season has finished; some of us will be trying indoor bowling for the first time this winter. At long last our August Bank Holiday tournament was blessed by fine weather and excellent bowling conditions. Teams from various clubs compete and this year we came a creditable tied first but, in fact, finished second on a shot scoring system. The contestants and spectators enjoyed a hot lunch with refreshments available all day. This tournament is an essential fund-raising event to help pay for green maintenance, around £2,000 per year. We came near bottom in the Rother League this year, considering the players we have it was disappointing. With our season finished we held our annual presentation night and dinner at The Rainbow Trout on Saturday 8th October. Trophies for the winners of club competitions during the summer were as follows: Trophy Winner Runner up Ron Chamberlin Cup John Griffiths Charlie Thomas Mixed Doubles John Griffiths Jenny Turner Jeremy Leach John Southey Ladies Singles Edna Colvin Edna Southey Men’s Singles Jeremy Leach Bill Read 100 up Jeremy Leach Vic Bond Club Championship Terry Knight Roger Barden Marsh Cup, most improved player Terry Knight Captain’s Average Trophy John Southey There was a special Award this year The “Wrong Bias Cup” won by Terry Knight (for non -bowlers: the wood or bowl is held the wrong way round normally resulting in it ending up on the adjacent rink). With winter fast approaching members keep in touch with quizzes etc and a Christmas party. Also our weekly cuppa and chat afternoons on Wednesdays from 2.30 - 4pm for £1, anyone is welcome. However, we are not meeting on 21, 28 December or 4 January. Our Zumba Gold classes, run by a qualified instructor, are on Mondays 3 - 4 pm except Bank Holidays i.e. 26 December, 2 January. £4 per person. It is with great sadness that I write about the passing away of two of our members, Mick Hoad and Joyce Avard. Mick was taken from us on 3rd October after a long illness. He was a stalwart of the club, committee member, a very good player and a very “hands on person”. Mick in fact was mainly responsible for building the new clubhouse kitchen apart from many other tasks he took on. He will be sorely missed. Joyce was a very generous lady undertaking a great deal of charity work. The story of her involvement with Gambia since 1996 from water wells to a nursery school in her name has been in previous WCA newsletters, other publications and one of the eulogies at her cremation on 10th October at Hastings. The Gambian Children’s Fund charity was set up ten years ago. The wake for Joyce took place in our clubhouse with the refreshments provided by the ladies of Westfield WI. O

n the field of play it has been a busy and successful season for the club with promotion in Division 10 by finishing as runners up, finishing joint second in The Busbridge Bash T20 league, winning the John Cornford Memorial Trophy and we played a lot of friendly games with mixed success. In his first season as captain Peter Baker led from the front and was ably supported by Alvin Atkins, who took over as vice-captain half way through the season, and the other players who turned out regularly. The weather was kind to us with little disruption for rain and, as has become the norm, the grounds have been kept immaculate by Dave Legg and his helpers---we have one of the best batting tracks in the league and certainly one of the most picturesque grounds. The season came to an end with our Annual Awards Dinner at The New Inn on 9th October, an event that was well supported and enjoyed by all so thanks to Patrick and his team for hosting the event and providing excellent fare. Awards League: Peter Baker (most runs), Rob Ledsham (best batting average) Alvin Atkins (most wkts), Rob Ledsham (best bowling average) Peter Baker (most outfield catches) T20: Jack Stapley (most runs), Curtis Coombes (most wickets) Friendlies: Peter Baker (most runs), Rory Hunt (most wickets) Players Player: Peter Baker Club Person: Ian Taylor Life Membership Certs: David Affleck, David Legg, David Thomas and Graham Corke. In addition all 21 players who helped gain promotion in the league were awarded runners up medals. It has been a busy season off the field as well with the beginning of a “junior” section from the 2017 season. We kicked this off with an open day at Westfield School supported by Waitrose and Sussex Cricket Foundation who provided free coaching to 172 children throughout the day; from there 21 children were chosen to attend summer training at Horntye given by Sussex Cricket Foundation. On the back of this we have an official partnership agreement with Westfield School to promote junior cricket both at the school and our club; we have been holding skills training at the school once a week at lunchtimes to maintain interest. Sussex Cricket Foundation will be continuing their involvement with free coaching at after school clubs starting on Wednesday 11th January 2017 and every Wednesday thereafter for 20 weeks. This will give a sound base for us to start our junior section next season with our own coaching sessions. The junior section will also be open to any local children who would like to come along to learn how to play cricket and hopefully form a team/s. We raised sufficient grants to purchase a defibrillator early in the season which we feel is a very important addition to our equipment and we take it to all games home or away---fortunately we didn’t have to use it this season! We have also been busy investigating the prospect of building a long overdue new pavilion and pleased to say that, with Westfield Parish Council backing, a working party was set up to oversee the development and building of said pavilion. The working party (WCPWP) met in September following which Sports Clubhouses have been appointed to carry out a feasibility study which will culminate in a building design and material specification, we are meeting with Sports Clubhouses in mid October to finalise the brief. Westfield Tennis Club Ed. With apologies for omission in August’s newsletter: The Westfield open tennis tournament was held on Sunday 5th June. All 16 entrants enjoyed their play before Rosie Holland and Cliff Schubert won 6-1 against Hamilton Williams and Lin Jarvis in the final set. The sun shone at last and after an exciting morning's event the players and spectators enjoyed a buffet lunch before retiring for the day.

2016 September tournament 16 players gathered for the early autumn, American Open, tournament at Westfield Tennis Club resulting in the finalists playing one full set. The winners Hamilton Williams and Mary Potterton played Ray Medhurst and Margaret Atkins a 6.0 final result. A ploughman's meal and sweet desserts ended a pleasant day at the club. Window on Westfield The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter Compiled by the clerk to the Council Kate Darbyshire. A brief summary of Council business conducted at their August, September & October meetings. Full minutes are on the website http://www.westfieldvillage.co.uk/ council-papers or from the clerk.

August The Westfield Cricket Pavilion Working Party (WCPWP), consisting of members of the Cricket Club and Parish Council was formed. Ian Taylor of Westfield Cricket Club was appointed as Project Manager, and the Council look forward to working with him on this project to build a much needed new pavilion. As a result of the Councillor’s annual Parish Walkabout in July, there were a number of repairs identified which will be actioned within the coming months. So far this has included the removal of some of the old exercise equipment in the Parish Field, and the stump grinding of two tree stumps in the Recreation Ground. September Fingerpost No 43, on the junction of Wheel Lane and Parsonage Lane was replaced. Following a report from a parishioner, the footpath between the tennis courts and Recreation Ground was repaired, to make it safe. The Council has received several complaints from parishioners about dogs in the Recreation Ground. The Council will arrange for additional signage warning about the dangers of dog fouling in children’s play areas. In the meantime the Council would like to remind dog owners that dogs are not permitted in the Recreation Ground, even if they are on a lead. October As a result of safety concerns raised by the Police about the traffic during the Westfield Christmas Lights, the Clerk and Vice Chair, Jackie Smith met with Sergeant Dave Townsend. It was a very positive meeting and the Council will continue to support this worthwhile event which raises so much money for St Michael’s Hospice. The Council will do this by liaising with the Police to ensure that sufficient signage is in place. The WCPWP held their first meeting in September, and at the Council’s October meeting it was agreed that a feasibility study was needed for the new Cricket Pavilion. This will be carried out by Sports Clubhouses. (continued next page 44

The Council considered a quote to repair the ‘Traverse Stepper’ piece of equipment in the Recreation Ground. The Clerk will continue to negotiate the best price to get the equipment repaired, and the work will be carried out as soon as possible. Look out for a questionnaire that will be circulated throughout the village by the Friends for Fia fundraising group. The questionnaire has been produced independently by the "In Spades" community organisation to gather information on the types of play equipment parishioners would like to see in the recreation ground. The Parish Council will use the results of this survey to aid decision making about new equipment at any of its play areas, as appropriate. The ‘switch on’ event last year gave cause for concern from the danger point of view with people drifting into the road. The Police had quoted £3,000 to safeguard the event which would be too great an expense for such an occasion. However, it is hoped that the Lights will continue to provide enjoyment and raise funds for St Michael’s Hospice. Please be careful and mindful that the A28 is a busy road and not everyone is looking at the lights. Avoid wearing dark clothing - be seen.
