Harpy*s Magazine is a student-run feminist magazine courtesy of the Washington State University Women*s Center. We focus on the modern matters of egalitarianism including gender, racial, queer, & disability justice, and all-around empowerment.

The Women*s Center's Digital Media team strives to educate, empower, and elevate marginalized voices in online spaces. We use strategies and tactics to serve students and local communities.

Editor’s Letter Serving as the editor of Harpy*s Magazine for the 2023-24 year has been a remarkable experience. I’ve had the chance to work at the Women*s Center which truly stands out as a gem, providing supportive place to fostering a sense of community. It really is the most special thing I've ever done. Also, I’ve had the pleasure of reading numerous vibrant and diverse works from our contributors. Your efforts have not only shaped this issue but have also elevated Harpy*s Magazine to new heights. I genuinely wish more people could hear about Harpy*s, this amazing magazine that covers so many issues and provides a place for students to create whatever they want to express. Thank you all for being an integral part of the Harpy*s community. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I do!

There's a pale blue bird in a cage She sits on the brink Nobody notices, nobody thinks A bird is meant to be in the sky, not wasting away; while she is forced to be displayed.

But alas, she is caged, plucking away her feathers; tempering her pain, not knowing who put her in this life long frame.

The bird wishes for someone to open the gate, praying and pleading in hopes that if she awaits, someone will delicate her freedom fate.

But until then, she remains, desperate and frail, for her life is a fragile tale.

TO THOSE WHO WAIT

BY HANNAH OLYNYK To those who await, playing this life long game of complete and utter dismay, living only in fear, for what's on the other side isn't clear.

One may pray and plead, bargaining for if he or she could have one more day, maybe all this time wasn't in vain.

But death can only play one match, for when the day ends, the darkness will creep in, filling the cracks and crevices of your soul, this is when you realize that the reaper was never a foe, but a friend you forgot long ago.

FATNESS: A REFLECTION

y name is Monroe, and as you may be able to see, I am fat. If you are not able to see, my name is Monroe, and I am fat. This is not the only characteristic I possess, but it is the one that matters most to other people. It is one of the first things others notice about me, besides my whiteness and mobility aids. To most, it doesn’t matter that I’m anything except for that I’m fat.

When you’re fat, people look at you a certain way, especially if you acknowledge it publicly or don’t try to hide it through carefully curated clothing. It all boils down to a mixture of the same three emotions: second-hand shame, disgust, and pity. It’s a look that screams instead of speaks, and it says: how dare you exist like that, how dare you not try to hide yourself, how dare you consider yourself human. In many ways, I’m not considered human, not considered worthy of being human, by others, because I do not fit their ideas of beauty. We praise the killing of spiders but mourn the death of butterflies.

Dignity is afforded to those who fit beauty standards, and I do not. I am shameful and so is my body. It doesn’t matter that I’m anything except that I’m fat.

I’ve learned to ignore the looks and be suspicious of people who call me pretty. I am pretty, and I sometimes know this, but many people consider it something that I am despite my fatness. You’re still pretty, they tell me. I have told my roomma 7

-te that I am not conventionally attractive, because I’m not, and xe said, “It’s just your weight. You are conventionally attractive, except for that.” This may be true, but I have been burdened with the knowledge that I may never know, because of what I have been told I must look like my whole life, and what has happened to me because I do not.

There are few people who have never looked at me with that mixture of shame, disgust, and pity. These people have become my chosen family, and I am incredibly grateful that they are a part of my life. There are two that stick out to me. One is one of my best friends, who got me a small statue of Venus for my birthday. Not the white, thin attempt at ‘reclamation’ whilst still adhering to white supremacist beauty standards, but the fat one. The one from times past when fatness was the epitome of beauty, when someone like me was considered beautiful. They told me they wanted me to remember that I am beautiful and that they found a little statue of a goddess that kind of looks like me. It’s the most thoughtful gift I have ever received, and I cried.

The other is my current girlfriend, who liked me long before I noticed because I do not believe I am worthy of being liked by someone. It’ll tell me it likes the view of my body, that it loves looking at me, that they could look at me all day and it would be a day well spent. And for my part, I believe it.

I trust it so much and so wholly that I believe my girlfriend when they tell me I’m pretty. It is my first serious partner (of which there have been two total) whom I wholly believe when it tells me I’m pretty. Is that not depressing?

My first serious partner looked at me like that.

He told me he found me attractive, and I never fully believed him, because he never fully believed it either. He went on and on about the ‘health’ of fat people, and we argued a lot about it. I felt that I was the ‘good’ fat person to him, because he thought he loved me, so he could then look past the moral failing of my fatness. I recall one argument we had about the ‘health’ of fat people on the way to a date and his mom commented that she was surprised we were still together after it; our arguments were that vehement. When we broke up, he used his position as president of the GSA to go on anti-fat rants. I don’t have to find obese people attractive, they’re unhealthy, they’re disgusting. It felt like yet another betrayal, the first time he’d said something he truly believed about me in months, but it wasn’t to my face. He is too much of a coward for that.

When I was in high school, I published nude photos of myself for an art project, being careful not to show any genitalia. I wanted to see what would happen, how people’s perceptions of me that I could no longer care about, would change.

I was called it in a degrading way. Is it a boy or a girl? It’s disgusting. People compared me to porn, something hidden and shameful. They would say this to others, knowing that I was right there and could hear every word. People would pass me in the hallway with the thought in their eyes that they knew what my tits looked like, and that I should be ashamed.

I knew then like I know now that had I been thin, I would have been celebrated for my bravery.

Even so, I am considered brave for existing, for dressing how I like, because it is not enough for a fat person to just exist. Wow, I can’t believe you have the courage to wear that. Wow, you’re so brave. People sugarcoat the hatred I face because no one wants to acknowledge that their worst fear is to look like me. I know that when you look at me. I see it in your eyes.

I’m disabled. I have a variety of health conditions that affect the way that I live my life and ensure that the baseline of my experience is a combination of extreme pain and fatigue. I was not diagnosed until I fought for them at eighteen. Most doctors blamed my pain and fatigue on my weight. I recently went to the doctor, and he asked about my asthma. When I told him it wasn’t being handled well, he said he wanted to wait until after I’d lost weight to change anything in case it was weightexacerbated. This decision leaves me with unmanaged asthma in the middle of pollen season and just before fire season.

What his response, and the similar responses and comments from every doctor I have ever trusted with my health and body, tells me is that my fat body is not deserving of care. The ways that people look at me tell me I am not deserving of humanity, in their eyes. I am shameful and so is my body. It does not matter that I am anything except that I am fat.

My name is Monroe, and I’m fat, so I’m getting weight loss surgery. I’m told it will help my pain. B’ezrat Ha’Shem, it will. I feel nothing except a burning apathy and resignation. I will do so much to relieve the pain I experience. It turns out that this is one of them.

When I worked, I would leave my shifts close to tears and vomiting. I could barely attend my

classes because of the pain and the fatigue. I cannot stand for more than a minute without pain. I wake up in pain, I walk in pain, I sit in pain, I live in pain. I wholly believe that if I gave my pain to one of those macho military bros, he would cry like a child for his mother. I no longer receive that grace from others; no one wants to hear me speak of my pain because it would be all I ever spoke of.

I question what it will be like to not be fat anymore. I suppose my life will improve when my stomach has been mutilated, and my body shrinks to fit others’ small-minded expectations of what someone deserving of humanity should look like. I wonder how many of the studies that show improvement after bariatric surgery consider that not having to deal with fatphobia anymore improves health. When I’m not looked at like I am some kind of muddy old pig, will the stress go down? Will my health genuinely improve? It doesn’t matter to people that bodies are meant to hoard weight for survival. What matters is that fat bodies don’t fit the white supremacist beauty standards that are constantly changed and weaponized. I am shameful and so is my body. It doesn’t matter that I’m anything except that I’m fat.

I wonder how long after surgery, how much shrinkage I must go through to finally be considered worthy of humanity by others. Does that make you sad? Does the fact that I am conforming to others’ small boxes of what humans should look like, their limited view of beauty, make me weak? I worry that I am weak for this decision, that I am backing down from the protest and statement that is existence in a fat body. I tire of existence like this, in a body such as mine. Why must my existence be a protest? Why is it not enough to just exist? Am I weak? Will I regret this? Should I?

In the end, I suppose it doesn’t really matter. The choice has been made, and now I wait for it to happen, wait to be mutilated. Maybe when I look in the mirror, I won’t hate what I see anymore, won’t feel compelled to pull out a knife and cut away the most undesirable aspects of my body. And maybe when you look at me, you won’t hate what you see either; won’t feel that mixture of shame, pity, and disgust; won’t look at me like existing as I do is your worst fear.

Yes, I notice that too; it’s in your eyes.

In the end, I will be praised for my commitment to my health. No one will remember the angry abused teenager who displayed photos of their fat naked body, as a protest towards their abusive ex-partner, and the school that let it happen and got confused when I reacted. That angry abused teenager was backed into a corner with a rabid dog, and onlookers who expressed pity were surprised when I fought back. That teenager is dead, and I killed him. That teenager is dead, and you killed fear too.

I am shameful and so is my body. It doesn’t matter that I’m anything except that I’m fat. But soon that won’t be true anymore.

Praise me for my commitment to my ‘health,’ my desire to murder the child I once was, and the partially voluntary extinguishing of the fire that once burned bright in my soul. Praise me for my weakness as it kills me. Praise me as I tire of existence in this body because of your constant judgment. Praise me as I conform to your idea of humanity. Praise me as I fade away, as if that’s fair enough compensation for splintering my soul and mutilating my body.

Praise me, as I will no longer be fat, and instead be worthy of the morality and beauty assigned to thinness. Praise me. Praise me. Praise me.

MALE-DOMINATED FIELDS BECOMING FEMALE-DOMINATED: SETBACKS FOR GENDER EQUALITY

iving in America as a woman comes with a myriad of amazing experiences but plenty of pitfalls. If you have ever existed in American society as a woman, you’ll know our struggles are just as prevalent as they were in the 1800’s in one way or another. Call yourself Taylor Swift because you know it all too well. One that we still fight daily is the gender pay gap between men and women. There is constant controversy about whether it still exists or if it’s something that isn’t as simple as female discrimination anymore. I would like to bring to your attention another facet of this conversation that is still alive and well and just as troubling.

There is an interesting pattern being studied currently about a prominent male exodus occurring in many fields. Men are leaving certain lines of work that women are progressively entering more. An article written

by Per Block, the Department of Sociology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, discovered, “Findings clearly show that men are less likely to remain in jobs when a higher proportion of women enter the occupation.” This is an odd effect of women joining more fields of work.

Work that was once known for being masculine is slowly being feminized due to the lack of men willing to stay in the career. For instance, cheerleading was once a male-dominated sport but females began participating which in turn caused cheerleading to become a female activity almost entirely.

As well, cheerleading’s label of being a genuine sport was stripped and was seen as more trivial once it became female-dominated. Even in more pressing positions like nursing, it was mainly a man’s job but soon women joined the career. Just like cheerleading, men left the positions, and nursing was seen as an easier alternative in the health field. Even the primary characteristics required to do the job became softer or feminine like caring and socially apt rather than authoritative and labor intensive.

The male demographic leaving has detrimental effects on the given profession. Even more frustrating than a field or line of work losing merit just for being female-dominated, it also lowers the pay a woman can earn. A New York Times article written by Claire Miller, discusses in depth the scientific research regarding the effects of professions becoming female-dominated, “When women moved into occupations in large numbers, those jobs began paying less even after controlling for education, work experience, skills, race, and geography.” Even when you take into account factors like experience and education, there's an obvious disparity in wages a woman can earn. This effect can occur in the most prestigious of careers, all the way down to minimum-wage positions. Claire Miller provided some insane statistics about the disparities, “The same thing happened when women in large numbers became designers (wages fell 34 percentage points), housekeepers

(wages fell 21 percentage points) and biologists (wages fell 18 percentage points).” These numbers can illustrate this idea all by themselves about the prevalence of the gender wage gap that still lives especially as women become more successful.

Despite the drastic decline in wages for women in identical positions to men, there are still some who argue that a woman may purposefully choose a job with less pay. The point lies in that women may specifically choose careers that pay less like caregiving, which is often due to responsibilities within their personal lives. In addition, they leave jobs which is often in support of their husband’s pursuit of their higher paying career options. Most prominently, women chose to take jobs that pay less or have fewer opportunities which is usually due to their need to be flexible so they can balance their domestic life and even manage a growing family. Despite working, women still are expected to take the lead on child rearing which can affect their ability to take on serious careers.

In other ways, women must compensate for the disparity by bringing more to the table.

Education is a big part of obtaining a career for any person but for women who are already disadvantaged, it’s that much more important.

The authors Sabine Severiens and Geert Ten Dam wrote a scientific article that elaborates on men even leaving college programs deemed

feminine while also looking into women leaving programs highly populated with men. An important distinction they note is, “Furthermore, returns for women seem to depend more on a degree compared to men, which encourages more women to finish their programs.” Women must rely on factors like education and experience when their very biological sex can be a hindrance. They almost must be overqualified to be given equal opportunities. In return, Severiens and Dam found facts like, “Women, on average, outnumber men and are more successful in the bachelor years of higher education.” This just shows the effects women have as we thrive and join society as educated individuals after being denied that right not so long ago. It is evident the lengths women must go to and in the meantime, outshining male counterparts that they will later still be in competition with.

In all, women have and continue to work hard to be given the same opportunities when it comes to work. Even as women expand and enter new fields, it will still be a detriment to women as the reputation and pay decrease. It’s an uphill battle that we make strides in every day even if discrimination feels like an issue that cannot be eradicated. The male exodus doesn’t seem to stop as long as being female provides grounds for inner biases for those in our society. We can’t stop those around us from indulging in discrimination but we can prove them wrong.

so long live the women who grasped their symbols of protest as dangerously as if wielding a sword and the people who served as cautionary tales after being subjected to a broken world and the disobedient girls who converted their hateful words into fuel for her ambitions and success and the teenager who wore a tie to prom in an act of expression and defiance for the sake of no one but herself from then til now the castle remains fortified by paranoia and arrogance but their nightmares have become real as rebellion grows from inside it’s walls with each moment a new pebble thrown and a new match lit a new mind brimming with the idea of living without fear so while they say long live the King she says Long Live The Castle Smashers

Entropy of Self Respect

BY LIZ WESORICK I hate the notion that my subconscious self is so impacted by the male gaze.

I just want to be desired.

Movies and books, so often Perpetuating the absurd notion that women are objects.

I despise men who would dare view me as such.

But why her, and not me?

What about the way I look Is unattractive?

I want to be able to change it.

Please never tell me. I can’t handle it.

I don’t want men to look at me as an object, a thing, a prize.

The concept of being something to be won makes me sick to my stomach.

I can’t help it if you're bitter no one has ever desired you.

I prefer bitterness to shallowness.

Wanting for people to like your body so they don’t look past and see how ugly your soul is.

For someone who detests misogyny, You sure would be quick to view yourself as less for being a slut.

You hypocrite.

Why would I be slut at all? That’s the part I hate.

That a man who I say no to will call me a bitch, And lie that he never wanted me anyways.

My relationship with clothing hasn’t been easy Because it relates to my body And when it relates to my body It relates to my diet and what I am consuming Just lose 5 or 10 pounds and it’ll look great It might look great, but that kind of talk Does not help This kind of talk makes me self-conscious Not confident Even when things do fit me The thought always rests in my brain You will never be good enough You don’t look good You aren’t even that pretty I know, the self-talk is rough I need to work on it

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about the Women*s Center and our mission.

We want to invite WSU students, staff, and faculty to be as involved as possible. We welcome anyone with an interest in volunteering their time to help us plan. The Women*s Center advises the Coalition for Women Students (CWS).

CWS was formed in 1912 as the Association for Women Students (AWS). The term “coalition” was adopted in the fall of 1993 to express a common vision for the student groups involved. Currently, CWS is comprised of seven organizations and is open to adding more voices to the table.

CWS develops leadership opportunities for women, with an emphasis on empowering women of color.

CWS strives to pursue gender equality by meeting the educational needs of women-identifying students at CWS hosts events within the realm of feminism and social and gender justice!

Membership is open to all Washington State University students regardless of race, religion, sex, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, or citizenship status.

The Black Women's Caucus serves as a support system for Black women on the WSU campus. Our main focus is to serve as an instrument through which Black women and other marginalized genders are able to express their concerns about issues they face globally as well as locally. BWC is also concerned with educating other students about the pioneering roles and major contributions of Black women in this society. Membership is open to all students who share concerns of BWC.

EST. 1995 at WSU Mujeres Unidas empowers and represents the interest and issues of Chicanas/Latinas at WSU while coordinating activities and leadership opportunities for multiculturalidentifying women. Mujeres Unidas provides a resource for all, to join and express their concerns and experiences.

EST. 2019 at WSU PERIOD is a volunteer-fueled chapter of the national non-profit PERIOD. We strive to eradicate period poverty through service, education and advocacy. Through the distribution of menstrual products, empowering students through leadership, and championing menstrual equity in policy. We aim to center those disproportionately affected by period poverty and support local efforts for menstrual equity.

QIA is an intersectional organization that specifically focuses on issues that encompass the experiences of Black and Brown queer people. It is a safe space where everyone can exist as their full selves while their humanity is celebrated and supported. QIA creates a space for Queer and Trans people of colour to discuss issues on race, sexuality, gender and other intersections. QIA is committed to educating ourselves and others continually in our communities about the trials and victories of queer people at WSU and around the world. We advocate for the respect and celebration of multicultural intersectional identities of queer people of colour through storytelling, art, media campaigns and any other form of advocacy.

CSR, funded by CWS, is a volunteer-operated program offering free rides to the WSU Pullman community on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The service is available to all community members, emphasizing that feeling unsafe is not a prerequisite for use. CSR sets itself apart by exclusively providing rides to residential and on-campus locations within Pullman, with pickups offered anywhere within the city limits, including stores and bars.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Student Center CUB 414 | 509-335-1986 | aapi.wsu.edu There are about 57 cultures under the umbrella term "Asian American and Pacific Islander" with over 300 different languages spoken. Though each culture has its unique characteristics, we are united in the common struggle of adapting to Pullman away from the comforts that our cultures may have provided. Things such as family, food, climate, and community advocacy/support are vital to feeling comfortable in a college climate.

The AAPI Student Center recognizes the unique breadth of experiences within the 57 cultures, striving to accommodate students to feel at home at WSU. It is a place to relax, meet other students, and find useful information to survive in this stressful college environment.

Our Mission at the Chicanx Latinx Student Center is to promote academic success and achievement for all students especially those of Latin/Spanish ethnicity, culture, community, heritage and linguistic backgrounds. Therefore, the Center provides academic guidance, programming, professional services, and connections to promote the students’ academic success and personal development. We do this by creating a positive, safe, encouraging, nurturing and professional environment where students take on Personal Responsibility In Developing Excellence (PRIDE).

To this end, the Center exists to serve as a support for all students and communities by providing the connections to foster a culturally relevant transition, adjustment, persistence, achievement, and graduation from Washington State University.

The Native American Student Center strives to meet the educational needs of Native students, while providing a space on campus for Native students. They provide academic advising, cultural events, student mentoring program, scholarships, financial guidance, and computer usage, and more.

Workout opportunities at Chinook are open to undergraduate students enrolled in 7 or more credits and those who have purchased a Chinook membership. In addition to the recreational opportunities, Chinook offers multiple areas for the other essentials of student life: studying, socializing, eating, relaxing and more. The Chinook Student Center includes several spaces and amenities that are open to all, regardless of gender identity. There are also meditation rooms which are inclusive spaces for people of all religious and cultural backgrounds.

The Chinook offers three large multipurpose rooms for fitness classes and open recreation.

Music practice rooms are located on the ground floor. The Nap Zone on the ground floor of the Chinook offers noise-canceling sleep pods to help you re-energize. Presentation practice rooms are located on the ground floor. These smaller rooms offer a quiet and private place to practice speeches and run through items before getting in front of a larger audience. Spaces can be used on a first-come, first served basis. You can also relieve tension and unwind in the saunas at the Chinook. Saunas are located on the basement floor near the men's and women's locker rooms. Other features of the Chinook include: over 180 classes per week in 45 unique formats, E-sports Lounge where console games are also available for check out, the The Chinook Espresso Bar, and the Freshens fresh food studio.

Stephenson Fitness Center Stephenson Complex | 509- 335-8732 urec@wsu.edu With over 7,500 square feet of new remodeled space in the Stephenson Complex, the Stephenson Fitness Center includes weight lifting and cardio equipment, two multipurpose group fitness and training rooms, and a small lounge. The weights and cardio space includes approximately 25 pieces of cardio equipment, 15 lifting stations, and stretching areas. Located in Stephenson Complex on the lower level known as the Stephenson Fitness Center. Stephenson Fitness Center can be accessed from the ground level by using the sidewalks to the east of the building from the main desk. The space includes two multipurpose rooms for group fitness and training classes, all which will be comparable to current University Recreation offerings.
