Cramarossa is the

“SHOOTOUT SAVANT”

————— BY: ALLISON SHUEY Imagine this… you are standing at center ice, the puck is placed in front of you, a hoard of anxious fans surround you, and the only thing holding your team from a win is the opposing netminder.

for the club, but Cramarossa didn’t back down from the challenge. Despite the pressure of this moment, he pulled off his patented move all three times, securing victory for the Penguins on all three occasions.

It all comes down to this one shot. For Joseph Cramarossa this is a familiar scenario as he has lived it not once, not twice, but three times in the shootout so far this season with the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. All three shootout attempts came at a critical moment

“In that situation, you want guys that are confident and are going to go down and do it. And [Cramarossa] is that guy,” remarked Penguins head coach Clark Donatelli after the forward’s most recent shootout heroics over the Providence Bruins on Mar. 1, 2019.

20 SEASONS | 1999-2019

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton fans first saw Cramarossa rise to the occasion against the Hershey Bears on Dec. 9, 2018. After a three-goal, third-period comeback by the black and gold, the I-81 rivals were knotted at four goals apiece after 60 minutes of action and a five-minute overtime session. Thus, a shootout was in store. The first three rounds came and went with neither netminder allowing a goal. It was now a sudden death situation. Hershey shot first and was denied repeatedly by John Muse. In the ninth round, Cramarossa’s name was called and he took his place at center ice after seeing every player before him turned aside. The Markham, Ontario native brought something to the table that neither goalie had seen to that point in the nine-round shootout, and it was then that he gave a glimpse of his favorite move. Cramarossa took towards the cage with a full head of steam and beat Hershey’s goaltender through the five-hole with a slick, backhanded shot. Cramarossa showcased that same move on home ice, dazzling the Penguins faithful in attendance for the first game of the New Year with a game-winning shootout goal over the Grand Rapids Griffins on Jan. 4, 2019. His conversion against Providence earlier this month brought him to three-for-three on the year, tying him for the best shootout ratio in the league.

His aforementioned confidence has proved to be key in his three clutch shootout tallies. Cramarossa boasts bravado on the bench about his ability to score in a pinch and hasn’t failed Coach Donatelli this season. “He does it in practice and he does it in the games,” Donatelli said. “He comes in with speed and he’s confident. He knows he’s gonna score.” The backhand deke that has brought Cramarossa success is nothing new for him, too. He’s had quite a few years to practice and perfect it. “I’ve been doing that one since I was a kid and it was my go-to when I was in juniors,” he said. “I think I was eightfor-nine my last year [in the OHL]. So it’s always been in the back of my mind, even during the games when I come in on breakaways. It hasn’t been working there, but as long as it keeps getting the team the win in the shootout, I think I’ll keep it around.” This one shot continues to be successful for Cramarossa in those high-pressure moments. His signature move is unique, but at the same time, has been uniquely effective. You may never find yourself standing alone at center ice with the game resting upon your shoulder, but you can rest assured knowing that when Cramarossa does, he will approach it no reservations and the utmost confidence.

“I have a couple moves to pick from, but I have been practicing that one for a while, so I’ve been pretty confident going in there, “Cramarossa said.

GLORY DAYS ——— BY: NICK HART

College is supposed to be the best four years of your life. At least, that’s what people say. Whether or not you actually enjoy your time in school varies on a case by case basis, but for two members of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins locker room, they can say they enjoyed their salad days without a shadow of a doubt. And they did it together.

get the feeling “Broadway” Hayes knew how to get down on the dance floor to some early Lady Gaga in 2009), but perhaps most importantly, made college hockey history together. The Eagles went on a legendary run towards capturing the NCAA National Championship in 2010 with a team that was overflowing with talent.

Goaltender John Muse and winger Jimmy Hayes played together at Boston College. During their time with the Eagles, they took the ice together, studied together, presumably partied together (not start any rumors, but you

“In my four years at B.C., we had some unbelievable teams,” said Muse. “They recruited well. The recruited great players, but also recruited the right guys, you know what I mean? Many of us are still best friends to this day. We still keep up with each other.”

Current Penguins Muse and Hayes were key cogs on that championship team, as well as a handful of other former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. As Muse said, he and his title-winning teammates have all remained in touch throughout their various pro careers that have led them down different paths in the AHL and for some, fruitful NHL tenures. However, Muse and Hayes’ bond even pre-dates their time at Boston College.

They had a chance to talk about the team’s offense, 171 goals scored, most in the nation. They’ve recanted the team’s youth, an average age of 20.4 years-old, youngest in the nation. And, of course, they’ve discussed the way the team sliced through its competition like a hot knife through butter in the National Tournament, outscoring opponents 24-9 in four games en route to the title.

“We were actually prep school roommates at one point,” Muse said. So we’ve been together for a while now, and it’s a lot of fun playing with a friend of mine from all the way back in high school again.”

Naturally, the 2010 National Championship stands out as a highlight during Muse and Hayes’ college stay, but even if you removed that domineering triumph, the memories they made at Boston College overall remain some of the fondest they ever made.

Reunited this season with the Penguins, Muse and Hayes have had plenty of time to reminisce over their trek towards lifting the NCAA National Championship Trophy over their heads.

“I had a great four years at B.C.,” Muse said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

Zach Aston-Reese’s PLAYLIST PICK OF THE MONTH

Zach Aston-Reese is a multi-talented individual. In addition to being a freak on the ice, he plays multiple instruments in his family rock band and will even jam out with other musically inclined teammates from time to time. If his headphones aren’t playing some of his dad’s favorite tunes by the Allman Brothers Band or the Grateful Dead, he’s probably absorbing something new by Catfish & The Bottlemen or even Drake. If it’s pop, rock or rap, he’s gonna check it out. For all intents and purposes, Aston-Reese is the Penguins locker room’s resident music expert. We’ve asked Zach to provide us with some of his favorite artists that he can’t get enough of right now (new, old and everything in between,) so you can add them to your playlist and expand your musical horizons. Even though Zach is currently in Pittsburgh, he was still kind enough to provide us with a recommendation for March. This is Zach Aston-Reese’s Playlist Pick of the Month.

| Hozier

Hozier is a somewhat enigmatic, bluesy rock ‘n’ roller who rocketed to prominence after the release of his debut album in 2014. While the eponymous release’s commercial sales in the United States never matched that of its six-time platinum status in his native Ireland, it did feature the inescapable international hit, “Take Me to Church”. Hozier’s first single led to many more eyes and ears following the indie artist and discovering his lesser-known but still impressive repertoire. Hozier just released his second studio album last Friday, Mar. 1, 2019.

What Zach says… “I listened to him a lot my sophomore year of college. I think it was ‘Jackie and Wilson’ the song that I listened to the most. I had this project one time where I had to edit together a lyric video, and so he has another song called ‘She’s Actual Size’. It is like the weirdest song ever, but I animated the lyrics and stuff like that for the video. I was up until like 4:00 a.m. putting that thing together, and I was listening to Hozier the entire time, like nine hours.” He has the one song the everybody knows, “Take Me to Church”. If someone starts digging deeper into Hozier, is it going to be like that song or should they expect something different? “I would say pretty similar. Not exactly the same, obviously, but he has that bluesy, folk-rock fusion going most of the time. It’s a really cool sound. I also really like when I listen to an artist and their studio stuff translates live. Hozier can replicate the sound during his shows.”

Zach’s Top Tracks “Jackie and Wilson” “Someone New” “From Eden” “To Be Alone” “Take Me to Church”
