2017 - 2018 SEASON

Dear Fans, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2017-18 American Hockey League season, the continuation of a tradition of excellence that spans more than eight decades. The AHL remains proud of its role in developing more than 88 percent of today’s National Hockey League players, as well as the vast majority of the NHL’s coaches, general managers,

training staffs, broadcasters and officials. Last year, we cheered on players like Jake Guentzel, Zach Werenski and William Nylander as they graduated from the AHL and made remarkable impressions on the NHL. Since 1936, our loyal and passionate fans have been able to watch more than 100 future Hockey Hall of Famers as well as over 100 Calder Cup champions who now have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup as well. As we begin our 82nd season in 30 cities across North America, we welcome our new fans in Laval and Belleville and wish all of you who cheer for our clubs the best for another exciting season. On behalf of all of our teams, players and staff, thank you for your continuing support of the AHL.

2017-18 SEASON

On behalf of the entire Wilkes-Barre/Scranton organization, I would like to welcome you back to another exciting season of Penguins hockey in northeast PA. And has it ever been a better time than now to be a Penguins fan? Wilkes-Barre/Scranton laid claim to the best record in the American Hockey League last season the second time in the team’s first 18 years that it accomplished this feat - and advanced to the Calder Cup playoffs for the 15th consecutive season, the longest active streak in the AHL. Additionally, we were proud to contribute to yet another Stanley Cup championship for our parent club, the Pittsburgh Penguins, who claimed their second straight NHL title. No fewer than 20 one-time Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins skated for the team last year, and several, including Conor Sheary, Matt Murray, Bryan Rust, Jake Guentzel, Josh Archibald and Carter Rowney, saw their names etched on the fabled trophy at year’s end. And while we are happy to celebrate this recent success, we are once again looking to the future full of promise. Exciting youngsters, such as NCAA scoring champion Zach Aston-Reese, high-scoring prospect Daniel Sprong, and skilled forwards Thomas Di Pauli and Teddy Blueger figure to provide plenty of offense this season. Jean-Sebastien Dea and Dominik Simon also return up front, bringing a bit more experience at the AHL level, and potent scoring touches as well.

LETTER FROM THE CEO

And providing all-around leadership are seventh-year pro Garrett Wilson, eighth-year pro Chris Summers, and the most accomplished player in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins history, captain Tom Kostopoulos. The Penguins coaching staff is second to none in the American Hockey League. Head coach Clark Donatelli and assistant J.D. Forrest are entering their second full seasons with the team, while long-time NHL assistant and former AHL head coach Tim Army brings extensive experience in his first year with the Penguins. As we embark on our 19th season, I want to thank you for your continued support of the Penguins, and I look forward to seeing you at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

ANOTHER RUN

AT HISTORY BY: NICK HART

Back-to-back. It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? The Pittsburgh Penguins achieved the unthinkable last summer by becoming the first team in the salary cap era to win the Stanley Cup in consecutive seasons. Much like their triumph in 2016, the 2017 title wouldn’t have happened without some serious assistance from Pittsburgh’s beloved AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

PAGE 16

However, as they popped champagne in the Pittsburgh, there could never be the same level of enthusiasm in the northeast side of the state. Sure, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton faithful were thrilled to cheer on “their boys” to hockey’s ultimate prize, but seeing that championship trophy lifted in the Steel City once only made the Penguins fans in northeast Pennsylvania hungry for one of their own.

“The culture in Wilkes-Barre, the winning attitude, the winning that’s done on the ice, being able to compete in the playoffs every year, and not just competing, but giving yourself a chance to win every year, that’s part of development, in my mind,” Guerin said. “Development is not just about going out and playing hockey or playing a lot of minutes. It’s about playing with a purpose, and that purpose is to win.”

We want the Calder Cup. To those clamoring for Calder to make its way through the doors and onto the ice at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton’s new general manager Bill Guerin has news for you: It’s coming.

............. .

Perhaps that’s too bold – no championship is ever pre-determined – but Guerin made it perfectly clear during his first conference call as GM of the Penguins that a Calder Cup is among the bullet points at the top of his priority list. Right next to an AHL championship is developing future talent for Pittsburgh to continue its success, but to Guerin, those two tasks go hand in hand.

This year’s team is constructed to do exactly that. Win. Expectations for the 19th season of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton hockey include racking up a lot of victories. Expectations are to develop more stars for NHL success. Expectations are for this team to be great.

............. .

The Penguins organization has built its teams with another unthinkable goal in mind. It wants to win the Stanley Cup and win the Calder Cup. It’s a lofty task and an unprecedented one at that. But Pittsburgh pulled off the unprecedented last year with back-to-back Stanley Cups… so why can’t the Penguins organization do something like again this year? Especially when you consider that they have the personnel to do it. The Penguins forward group will be led by, of course, captain and 19th-year pro Tom Kostopoulos. The wily veteran has some shiny new toys in his toy box this season, as well. Two undrafted free agents and one elite offensive prospect project to be Kostopoulos’ scoring cohorts. Most Penguins fans will be familiar with Zach Aston-Reese, who joined Wilkes-Barre/Scranton late last year on an amateur tryout after leading the NCAA in points during his senior season at Northeastern University. His transition to the pros was seemingly seamless, scoring in the first period of his first game with the Penguins and earning eight points (3G-5A) in 10 games before an injury prevented him from participating in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

PAGE 17

The other undrafted hot shot entering the fray in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is Adam Johnson, a once unheralded prospect from a crowded youth hockey scene in Minnesota who became a highly-sought after talent after just two seasons of college hockey. Johnson helped lead the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs to an NCHC title and the NCAA National Championship game as a power play specialist with an on-ice IQ that would make Victor Fries jealous. Pittsburgh swiftly started working on signing him to an entry-level deal shortly following the conclusion of his sophomore season, and now he’s taking the next step of his career in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Penguins fans will want to come to games wearing comfortable shoes, because Daniel Sprong will have them jumping out of their seat as much as anyone has in team history. Sprong left his homeland, the Netherlands, at sevenyears-old to chase his dream of becoming a hockey player, and he’s been lighting the lamp in every rink in every country he’s even been to ever since. The Dutch dangler has wonderfully soft hands in tight spaces, soaring skating ability, but anyone who’s watched him once will never forget his shot. A second round pick of Pittsburgh in 2015, Sprong is coming off of a season in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League during which he had more goals (32) than he had games played (31). While offense is certainly exciting — the Penguins should have no shortage of that — it’s all for not if a team can’t keep the puck out of their own net. It’s all well and good to score 10 goals a game unless you’re giving up 11. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has that covered, too. Returning for the second-straight season will be goaltenders Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith, the Penguins netminding tandem from 2016-17 that posted the lowest combined goals against average in the AHL (2.24). Last year marked the fifth time in seven seasons that the Penguins walked away with the league’s Harry “Hap” Holmes Award for lowest goals against average, but this will be the first time that a Penguins’ award-winning goalie tandem returns for the following season.

PAGE 18

Jarry and DeSmith, 22 and 26-years-old, respectively, look to rekindle their magic from the previous campaign, and there’s little reason to raise any doubt. Jarry has a gaudy .917 save percentage as a pro, while DeSmith has a combined 28-9-6 record since leaving college. Also coming to their aid will be a refurbished defense corps that will undoubtedly make getting to the Penguins’ net a tall task. It will be in the most literal sense a

tall task.

Free agency and the trade market brought a collection of goliaths to Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton’s defense. Manning the blue line for the Penguins this season will be the likes of six-foot-six Jarred Tinordi, six-foot-five Andrey Pedan, six-foot-three Zach Trotman, six-footthree Kevin Czuczman, and the “runt of the litter” among the Penguins newcoming defense is six-foot-two, 210-pound Chris Summers.

Those five players create an imposing visual from a distance and become even more intimidating up close and personal. However, in today’s era of hockey, being a big bruiser can only get you so far. Opposing players of all sizes can burn you in an instant with their dazzling skill if you’re chasing a hit or too slow-footed to get back in position. In the Penguins’ case, that doesn’t seem to be an issue. All five of the aforementioned D-men have expressed their individual satisfaction with their new teammates’ skating ability.

“This is the most competitive D-corps I’ve ever seen or ever been a part of in my career,” Summers said. “Every shift, there’s no off shift. Every guy can play in every position.”

Pedan, Trotman, Czuczman and Summers can all scoot, and each cited how much more impressed they were with one another’s mobility rather than their genetic gift of towering height. Furthermore, Summers, who is a veteran of over 400 pro games, is enamored with his teammates’ compete level.

Even with all of those ingredients thrown into the oven, the Penguins can’t take anything for granted and assume that the Cup is theirs. Every game figures to be important this season for players at every position for Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton, due to the nature of the Atlantic Division.

When you combine those three elements (size, speed, compete), you get a pack of rabid defenders who can quickly close down passing lanes, recover to the proper position, keep up with the fastest of opponents, perfectly line up unsuspecting victims for big hits and do so in an unceasing rhythm.

Last year, the Atlantic was home to the top five teams in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins’ division figures to be just as stout if not improved this season, plus offseason AHL realignment saw the Charlotte Checkers (another playoff team from 2016-17) join the fray. As the fifth place Bridgeport Sound Tigers found out the hard way last year, only the top four teams from the division qualify for the Calder Cup Playoffs. No exceptions, even if your record is better than that of every single team in the North Division. With eyes on the top prize in both the NHL and AHL this season, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have a team are poised to be a lightning rod of excitement and adrenaline. GM Bill Guerin, captain Tom Kostopoulos, scoring sensation Daniel Sprong, the great goalies and towering defensemen couldn’t happier to have you along for the ride to the top.
