Supporting Each Other Recognise If someone is feeling upset or overwhelmed they may act differently. Consider how you might approach them. Ask for advice if need be.
Raise “Are you OK?” Sometimes people just need to talk — you don’t have to have solutions. Listen with compassion, empathy and patience. Take time to give your full attention.
Reconnect Check in again at another time. You can repeat this process many times. If need be, encourage them to access professional support.
Reflect It can be useful to help them reflect on how they are responding. “Is the way you are thinking about this helpful or unhelpful? “What would you say to me if the situation was reversed?” “What has been helpful in the past?”
Refer Call or text 1737 national helpline anytime. Talk to your manager or shift supervisor to identify support options such as EAP.
