Research Request: COVID's impact on Respiratory Presentations
This study has ethics approval reference: AH24249
We are asking General Practices agreement to contribute their data to the research study. They will have to do nothing other than review the study information and then agree to participate. We will capture data using the same tools we use to currently capture data for PHO level reporting purposes. We have included the information that will be supplied to General Practices (attached) and summarised it further below.
Study Summary
The research will provide an accurate picture of the incidence of respiratory infection presenting through general practice over the last ten years, and in particular, explore the impact of COVID-19 on the presentations to General Practice.
We are asking for practices to consent to provide de-identified patient data to the study, for potentially all your enrolled patients. Practices will not be required to undertake any work to participate. We will use advanced technology to apply natural language processing techniques and crossmatch clinical classifications and prescribed medicines to identify people with a respiratory infection, without the need for them to be coded.
Practices will be asked to participate in one or two phases of the study. Phase 1 involves the capture of a small set of de-identified clinical notes from consenting practices. These will be classified by GP clinical experts to help training a software algorithm to identify what a variety of respiratory presentations look like. These data from Phase 1 will be destroyed once the algorithm is developed and validated. Phase 2 will involve collecting codified data from practices on a large scale to analyse the change in presentation patterns of respiratory disease; and data will again be de-identified and destroyed once the research project has finished.
