Acute Demand Radiology – Chest X-Ray, & other plain film imaging Key Purpose/Benefit To support general practice with management to confirm or exclude an acute condition with a timely (funded) x-ray is a component of the Acute Demand Service.

Eligibility Criteria    

Reside permanently in the Western Bay of Plenty; and be a New Zealand citizen or have New Zealand residency status ACC patients are not eligible Preferable the patient is enrolled and funded through a WBOP general practice

Referral process Patients requiring an acute same day x-ray are considered urgent; in the current COVID environment a booked appointment is currently required. The patient will be contacted by Medex or Bay Radiology with an appointment time.

Up to date contact mobile phone numbers on the referral are essential to arrange the same day appointment with the patient. The patient will be contacted by the radiology provider with the relevant information.

An x-ray examination is undertaken within 30 minutes of the patient presenting to radiology, with a Radiologist reporting to the GP on the same day. If the report requires discussion with the GP, the Radiologist may phone the practice to discuss the findings.

Acute X-Ray referrals are located and submitted through Best Practice.

1. Log into Best Practice and click on WBoP Acute Demand Forms

2. Select Radiology

3. The Referral form will appear.

Once completed and submitted, the referral will be processed and returned promptly with an Approval Case Number seen in the top left on the patient details tab.

Clinical details are important to clarify why the patient requires an urgent same day x-ray.

How to find the referral Case Number once processed In Best Practice firstly click ‘Settings’ then ‘Notifications’. The processed referral is in the notification list. Once open the ‘Approval Case Number’ is found at the top left of the page.

Claim Submission Process 1. It is important for the general practice clinic to establish a process between clinicians and the practice administration to acknowledge a case that may require an invoice to the PHO. 2. Once the episode is finished the next step is to complete the BPac form: The clinician is required to return the referral form after completing the details in the Outcome tab comprising dates, and diagnosis to close the Best Practice form.

Payment No charges or payments are associated with utilising or referring patients to this service.

Exception: Where the resulting diagnosis is acute and requires a patient follow-up appointment for further management. The Acute Demand Service claim is a Radiology follow-up $62.55.
