Nursing Entry to Practice (NETP) Programme

Primary Care and Aged Care Benefits of employing new graduate nurses

A growing number of community health service providers are experiencing the benefits of employing new graduate nurses. New graduate nurses are being educated for and want to work in community services such as general practice teams, iwi and pacific health providers, aged residential care, home care, well child, and mental health services. Many of these talented graduates also have additional life skills, experience and qualifications as well as short and long term benefits for their employer including:

• through pukengatanga they bring enthusiasm and up to date knowledge of best practice to your organisation

• skills in sourcing evidence-based care information and role modelling this to existing staff

• rangatiratanga opportunities are provided for existing staff and enhancing their job satisfaction

• creating a workforce that better reflects the ethnic diversity of the population you serve which has been shown to improve access and quality of care

• succession planning to replace retiring staff through kotahitanga while maintaining unity of purpose and direction

• willingness to work in rural communities

Graduate must meet the following

• be awarded the nursing degree no longer than 24 months to commencement on the NETP programme

• be registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand within the Registered Nurse Scope of Practice

• have a current annual practicing certificate.

• be a New Zealand citizen or hold permanent residency

• have not practiced as a registered nurse continuously for longer than six months before starting on the NETP programme

Key Drivers

Following the Manaakitanga values it enables:

• nursing graduates to practice safely, effectively and confidently as RNs

• provide a structure with appropriate resources, to support the transition from beginner practitioner to competent RN on the National Framework - and to meet the evidential PDRP requirements for New Zealand RNs

• improve the quality of care delivered to patients and clients through nursing skills development at entry level

• have a positive impact on the nursing workforce via improved recruitment and retention outcomes

Employer Information

•programme timeframe is 12 months

• graduate positions are required to be a minimum of 0.8 FTE

•graduates have a shared case load with preceptor for initial 6 weeks (orientation)

• the graduate will not be the sole registered nurse on duty or be in charge for duration of programme, an experienced registered nurse is required to also be present

•graduates to be released for 12 professional development days

•the primary preceptor must be provided with initial preceptor education of 16 hours and then relevant continuing education

•graduates to submit their e portfolio for assessment to a NCNZ accredited Professional Development & Recognition Programme - Competent Level

•health workforce directorate funding is provided to approved sites to contribute towards NETP Programme release time, clinical education and training of graduate and preceptor

• MOU is required with the employer and Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty specifying the resources and obligations of both parties

• support from a Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty RN coach/ Pouako Tapuhi Kaupapa Māori - NETP is available for the graduate and the provider
