Are general practices adequately funded to serve high proportions of high needs patients? Tessa Senior & Dr Mona Jeffreys 12.15pm, Wednesday 13th October 2021 Māori, Pacific people and people living in areas of high deprivation often have a higher complexity of health needs, therefore a greater need to access health care services. This higher utilisation leads to a higher incurrence of cost for general practices. Using analysis from the New Zealand Health Survey, we have modelled four hypothetical practices with differing levels of high needs enrolment in order to determine how much funding these practices receive. We address whether there is evidence of structural discrimination in funding formulas for general practices who serve higher proportions of high needs patients. Tessa Senior is research assistant at Te Hikuwai Rangahau Hauora | Health Services Research Centre and a student of Health Psychology at Victoria University Dr Mona Jeffreys is an epidemiologist, and Senior Research Fellow at Te Hikuwai Rangahau Hauora | Health Services Research Centre. Her main research interest is in the broad area of equity in access to health care.
