Kia ora, We’re sorry you’ve received a positive test for COVID-19. It must be a shock. Aroha (sympathy) to you and your whānau (family).

Aotearoa New Zealand is working hard to keep the community COVID-19 outbreak as small as possible. We now have a new way of isolating people when they test positive*. This is called ‘self-isolation’, and it means you can now isolate in the comfort of your own home.

Whānau (family) who are close contacts may need to self-isolate at home with you.

As well as keeping our community safe, our goal is to support you to make your time in isolation as comfortable as possible.

If you’re feeling nervous or unsure about what the next few weeks will look like, kei te pai (all good). Everyone who starts self-isolation feels this way and it’s totally normal.

This booklet has advice to help you self-isolate and your welfare pack has things to help you on your path to recovery.

Designated people – your welfare team and healthcare provider – will check up on you regularly while you self-isolate to make sure that you and your whānau (family) are safe. Your welfare team and healthcare provider will help you with everything that you need to safely isolate at home.

What do I need to do?

Follow all the self-isolation rules on the next page.

Stay at home until you are told you can leave. It is very important that you do not go out.

Make sure you have a working phone so your healthcare provider can keep in touch with you.

What does self-isolate at home mean?

You need to stay at YOUR home unless you are asked to leave by your healthcare provider.

This will usually be for a test or another medical reason.

You need to stay at home and not go to work or school.

Please try and maintain a two-metre distance from the other people in your household and, if you can, sleep in a separate bed or bedroom. This will help to keep your whānau (family) safe.

No extended bubbles. Please don’t invite your friends or whānau (family) over.

Sunshine and fresh air are your friends. You can go outside onto your deck or garden, but you need to stay on your property and away from everyone.

No, unfortunately, you cannot go out, even for kai (food) or essential things. But, you will always have support to make sure you have enough kai (food) and what you and your whānau (family) need.

Start by asking your whānau (family) and friends who don’t live with you and aren’t also self-isolating, or using online shopping to get what you need. Make sure that they can pick up and drop off the things outside your home without having any physical contact with you or your whānau (family).

If you are unable to organise a kai (food) delivery or get something that you need, call your welfare team. If you can’t get hold of them, you can call the welfare support on duty. You can free phone 0800 798 729 or text 027 216 7485 from 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week.

Only use shared spaces (kitchen/living room) by yourself.

Clean and disinfect all surfaces you touch.

Everyone in your home should wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth, especially when in contact with the person who is COVID-19 positive.

Wash your hands often with soap and/or sanitiser.

Do not: • leave the place where you are isolating.

• go to work, school or public places.

• go on public transport or use taxis.

• go out to get kai or medicine.

• have visitors in your home except for health or community workers who are providing essential care to you or someone in your household.

• go to a vaccination appointment. If you have a vaccination appointment scheduled, either ring the booking line or go online to change your appointment.

• go out in a public place to exercise – only exercise at home.

When can I leave my whare (home)?

• Being COVID-19 positive means you need to isolate for at least 10 days, and your healthcare provider will contact you regularly by phone or video.

• Your healthcare provider will let you know when you can stop isolating and they will give you a specific date towards the end of your isolation time.

• Whānau (family) members and those you live with will need to stay home for the entire time you (and anyone else in your house who tests positive) are selfisolating. Once the last person in your household no longer needs to self-isolate, the other people in your whare (house) will need to self-isolate for an extra 10 days. This means they will need to isolate for longer than you.

How can I get help from a doctor and get medicine?

• If you need medications, don’t worry, you can do this in the usual way by giving your doctor a call, and your whānau (family) or friends can safely deliver these to you. If not, you can ask your pharmacy to do so.

• If you have any concerns, please let your healthcare provider know so they can help.

Should I tell my friends and whānau (family)?

• Letting close contacts know they may have been exposed to COVID-19 helps to protect everyone. If you feel safe and confident to let people know, then you can.

• COVID-19 can be passed on to other people up to 48 hours (two days) before you test positive, or before any symptoms start.

• Our COVID-19 tracing system might be a bit slow so best you make contact and let people that you were recently around know.

What to expect Most people will have mild COVID-19 symptoms for up to two weeks, and the symptoms will usually be much milder in people who’ve been vaccinated.

You might start to feel māuiui (sick) around two to five days after you were infected. It’s a good idea to write down how you’re feeling in the symptoms diary at the back of this booklet. Here are some of the symptoms that you may feel:

Runny or blocked nose

Loss of sense of smell or taste

Headache

Vomiting or diarrhoea

Body aches

Ways to help your breathing • Rather than lying on your back, rest or sleep on your puku (stomach) or on your side. You can use pillows to support your head, hips and feet.

• To rest, sit upright in a chair, especially after eating or drinking.

• Change your position often—every two hours.

Daily health checks While you’re isolating at home, your healthcare provider will call regularly.

They will ask how you are feeling and check any symptoms. You may have no symptoms, or you may develop a headache, sore throat, a cough, loss of taste or smell, or a runny nose.

If you become very unwell, call 111 and let them know that you have COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing • You may need to get tested again for COVID-19, but your healthcare provider will let you know.

• Your healthcare provider will also let you know if your family members need to get a COVID-19 test.

When you or your whānau (family) get tested, go directly to the testing service and do not stop anywhere on the way there, or the way back.

If you have not received your test results within five days, call the local COVID-19 helpline for free on 0800 225 449. You can call from 8 am to 5 pm, seven days a week.
