Monitoring your COVID-19 symptoms at home

Kia ora You’ve been sent an oxygen monitor (your pulse oximeter, the small monitor in your pack) to help check in on your health as you recover from COVID-19. This booklet will tell you everything you need to know about the pulse oximeter.

Also in this booklet is your symptoms diary. In the symptoms diary you can record the information your healthcare provider needs to help them take care of you.

Please read this information and ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions about how to use your pulse oximeter.

Cleaning wipes (to clean your equipment when you are ready to send it back) A bag to return your equipment in.

How do I monitor my health?

Check your health three times every day. This includes: • Testing your oxygen saturation and measuring your heart rate (using the small monitor in your pack; see on the next page how to use it).

• Writing the numbers down on the symptoms diary at the back of this booklet. Your healthcare provider will ask you for this information when they call.

How do I use the pulse oximeter?

Some people need extra monitoring of their symptoms to help healthcare providers best look after them. This may include being provided with a pulse oximeter. If one is in your pack, please read these instructions for how to use it and record your symptoms on the next page.

1 Make sure that your hands are clean and a little bit warm.

3 Gently open the pulse oximeter wide enough to allow your finger to fit inside.

Slide your index finger or middle finger from any hand as far as it will go into the pulse oximeter.

The pulse oximeter will turn on when your finger goes in. Keep your hand relaxed and still.

A reading will show as numbers on a screen after your finger has been steady for five seconds.

2 Sit in a comfortable position.

4 After one minute write down the numbers on the screen in your symptoms diary. The top number is your oxygen level. The bottom number is your heart rate.

If you become very unwell, call 111 and let them know that you have COVID-19.

Returning equipment Your equipment will be picked up three days after the last person in your household is allowed to go out again. Our team will arrange a transport provider to pick this up from you.

Before the transport provider picks up the pulse oximeter, please: Wash your hands for 30 seconds with soap and water, or use hand sanitiser Wipe the monitor with the wipes given to you in the pack Place the monitor in the bag given to you in the pack Wash your hands again Drop the bag into the bag the transport provider provides when they arrive.
