“WORKING WITH ADDICTION AND COEXISTING PROBLEMS” - Webinar Friday 19th August 2022 – from 8.45am – 3.30pm (Registrations: 8.45am – 9.00am)

Coexisting substance use and mental health problems (often abbreviated to “coexisting problems”, or “CEP”) are common in those presenting to both mental health and addiction services in New Zealand and present both clinical and organisational challenges. Addiction by itself has a ripple effect. As well as affecting the individual, problematic gambling, alcohol and other drug use can be harmful to families and the community. To illustrate: alcohol can be associated with domestic violence and many other crimes; gambling can result in significant financial hardship for a family; injecting drug use can result in blood-borne viruses spreading in the community as a whole. Moreover, those presenting for treatment often also suffer from coexisting problems in mental and physical health along with other personal, social, spiritual and economic problems, some of which can be complex and long-standing. These conditions do often exist together, and they tend to heighten the symptoms of the others. This training will help Mental Health & Addiction Workers, Counsellors, Social Workers, General Practitioners, Psychologists, Nurses, and anyone interested in the journey to recovery and wellbeing to: 1. Critically evaluate the relationship between addictions, coexisting mental health problems, personal identity and psychosocial functioning. 2. Analyse the impact of addiction issues on the lives of service users and their natural supports. 3. Have confidence in proposing a course of treatment The Presenter: David Benton has recently retired as the CEO of Hanmer Clinic. He has conducted numerous educational and training groups on all aspects of Alcohol and Drug work for GP’s, alcohol and drug workers, community support workers, workplace training, etc, and has been a tutor for the Central Institute of Technology's Coexisting Disorders Training Programme, and for the Alcohol and Drug studies Post Graduate Certificate of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Auckland University, and has written a Post Graduate course for the Open Polytechnic on Assessment and Treatment Planning for Coexisting Disorders.
