“THE WESTERN”

FROM THE JUNGLE The big boys came out to play last week. Any aliens in the crowd at Van Pk would have trouble believing North and West squared off in the 2013 granny, let alone accepting the news the Rooboys rolled the Tiges earlier this year. Over at BLSP the poor Sainters’ season went from forgettable to unforgettable- for all the wrong reasons. It was as painful to watch as a Channel 10 sports presenter suffering autocue failure. The Phant hates to say it, but the gap between the 1 and 2 seeds and those ranked 3 and 4 is starting to look wider than an elephant’s hips. Over at Island Park it was a case of what goes around comes around, as another classic finish between the Cats and Dogs saw the Hoops stealing home base at the bottom of the ninth.

Maybe Coach Ayton needs to pin the ears back and return fire, sacrificing some of his own key playmakers like Currie, Upton or even Stephenson to ride shotgun. The Cats will play finals football this year. They need to prove to the faithful they are not there for a cameo appearance on the big stage. North by 29 points

Millicent v East Gambier The Doggies somehow managed to lose the unlosable last start. Their form has been harder to read than a Chinese tabloid this year. But they are at their best when allowed to swing on the trapeze without a safety net. Leave the scientific game strategies in the kennels. Bang it in hard and fast to Kevvy Reiwoldt- Thomson and Anthony Wilson up forward and things might quickly start to look like Santa’s coming to town a little early this year. On the other side, a command unit that boasts Duldig, Robbins, Haggett, Redman and O’Loughlin should not be hanging their heads like a beaten favourite, week in and week out. It’s time to stand and deliver on home soil.

THIS WEEK West Gambier v South Gambier With the Ds starting to look more dangerous than Uncle Pete on Cracker Night, the West brains trust will be working harder than a married man in a singles bar trying to figure out their best plan of attack. The Roos started ok against North, but once the champs clicked into second gear West were blown away faster than a stick insect in a tropical cyclone. And they shouldn’t expect any clear air space this week either with key playmakers such as BP O’Neil, Coach Duncan, Berky the Elder and the Xlby Factor all at the top of their game. Neil Young might reckon it’s better to burn out than fade away, but with front men like Wilson, Holmes, Wenman and McElroy I think West still have plenty to offer, if they start taking the auditions seriously.

East by 18 points

Say What? “People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.” - Winnie The Pooh ‘Till next week... The Phantom

“The Western” is the official match day publication of the WBFL.

South by 30 points

Casterton Sandford v North Gambier The Cats managed to defuse the bomb site with only seconds remaining on the timer against the Doggies. No second chances will be on offer this week against the titleholders, and if they are not careful they will be crying into their oranges at first changeover. They need to pay utmost respect to the Chief, especially when he lets himself off the chain to sniff the roses. And that goes for the Big O and Nude Nut Perry, who are both in menacing form.

“THE WESTERN”

WBNA NETBALL ROUND 15 PREVIEW This should be the time of the season where teams are finetuning their game plans, building momentum and looking to produce consistent, high standard performances ahead of the impending finals but this weekend, an injury ravaged South Gambier will be looking to trial some new combinations as it takes on second ranked West Gambier. And to make the task even more difficult, West will be looking to bounce back emphatically from its second loss to third ranked North Gambier this season. While the margin was never more than around six goals, West did have control for the majority of the contest, only to see a fast finishing North line-up snatch a three goal victory in the final quarter. That being said, whatever obstacles South has to face, the time for excuses is over and the Demons have to start reducing the errors, upping the intensity and looking to emerge as a side deserving of a finals berth. Lisa King and Alyssa Boylan both suffered knee injuries in the dying minutes of the Demons’ loss to Millicent and so the South line-up is a little unknown. The Demons had the better of the Roos in the opening half of their last clash but faded in the third quarter to eventually lose comfortably. Looking after the ball is the key with the forward line of Megan Hein, Chantelle Weir and Malinda Markiewicz looking good when they work together and work hard into space but still cough up possession a little too easily at times. If they can play a patient brand of netball and force the talented Roos defence line led by Amy Cram to defend for longer, they could well find themselves enjoying more scoring opportunities and easier scoring opportunities. Markiewicz was at her accurate best last time against the Roos and will need to repeat that shooting performance to ensure the Demons get good value for every possession. Defensively, the task of curbing the shooting combination of Lisa Cram and Kahli Rolton will fall to Alyce Mourbey, Nicole Butler and Yazmin King and if that trio can apply good pressure to both the feeders and shooters, the turnovers will come. Lisa Cram and Rolton were best for the Roos in last weekend’s loss and it was their accuracy that ensured they were recognised by the opposition as the most damaging players so on Saturday, it will be about reducing supply. The change up in South’s line-up for the weekend could make it tough for them to secure the win but at this stage a four quarter, competitive performance would be an improvement. Casterton Sandford had yet another close loss at the weekend and this weekend hosts North Gambier. The Tigers have found some rare consistency in the past two weeks and will know the Cats always produce a competitive performance. Defensively, Ellen Brewster and Abbey Shannon produce as many turnovers as any other combination in the association and the duo has been consistently in the Cats’ best and would be leading their club best and fairest count you could surmise. Their ability to play a tight checking game as well as boasting the flair and play reading ability to create impressive interceptions, Brewster and Shannon will make Abbey Duncan and Bailey Watson work for every possession. Watson is coming off her best four quarter performance with the young shooter one of the keys to last weekend’s victory, while Duncan has been a revelation since the opening round of this season. Add to that, the class of feeders Brianna Walters and Audine Bryant and the Cats defenders will need the support of the likes of Scarlett Jarrad and Haylee Rhook to pressure the delivery. Much like with South Gambier, the issue for the Cats is not looking after the ball and coach Trictia Cleary knows if they can just transition better and choose the best options once in the attacking third, the Cats can compete with any side in the competition.

“THE WESTERN”

WBNA NETBALL ROUND 15 PREVIEW Cont... The experience of Natalie Rhook is critical in that game plan, while Jan Murphy continues to impress in the shooting circle – Murphy making the vast majority of her opportunities count. North’s defensive line also has the ability to create turnovers with Meg Gazzard and Alannah Campbell both coming off strong performances in the West clash. With games against South and East to come – both ranked below the Tigers – North really needs to enter the finals on the back of consecutive victories and that should be enough motivation to get them over the line. The final clash sees the vastly improved Bulldogs head to Millicent to take on the reigning premiers. Alex Walker should be back on court after sitting out last round with a slight ankle injury and her battle with Tenille Gray – as two of the competition’s young guns – will be pivotal. Gray has put in three best on court performances for her team since returning to the A grade court and her combination with fellow teenage shooting sensation Mary Wilson stood tall last weekend when the game got tight. The other intriguing clash will be Rachael Hines taking on Millicent coach Lisa Duldig. Both are defensive minded centres who run equally as hard at the offensive end to be key feeders for their club. The bottom line for East though, is no matter how good a form coach Bo Richards is in at goal defence, it is still a huge ask to stop Donna Denton. She shot 50 of Millicent’s 62 goals at the weekend and her ability to find space and finish accurately continually proves the difference. While much of the Saints’ success is built on their relentless defensive pressure all the way down the court, Denton’s class and finishing ability is some impressive icing to add to the cake. East will be looking forward to measuring their second half of the season resurgence against the competition benchmark and while an upset is akin to mission impossible, the young Bulldogs will give a good account of themselves.

“THE WESTERN”

SAINTLY SAYINGS

In round 14 we travelled to Mount Gambier where we took on South Gambier. The weather proved to be perfect with no wind and sunshine being a definite highlight in what has been a shocking couple of weeks. The netball began early this week with the under 12B side showing some new skills against a tough South junior side. The 12As started off slow, going into the second quarter with only 3 goals and South Gambier really pushing them. However they were able to turn it around and come away with the win. Unfortunately the under 13s, 15s and 17s were defeated in closely contested games with the 13s only marginally losing by 7. Despite the margins, both the 15s and the 17s played good netball and definitely took it up to south at many points of their games. Both the B Grade and C Grade unfortunately lost their respective games however came out firing at the beginning. The A reserve unfortunately had a slow start to their game and despite coming out firing for the remainder of the game they were unable to reel in the lead that South had already established. The A Grade proved to be too strong for South and continued their undefeated season with yet another good performance winning by 38. After a weekend away we come out today at home to take on East Gambier for round 15. Our last clash with East saw only 2 teams come away with wins; today we hope to see all teams come out on top in some tough games. I am sure there will be some close contests, let’s play hard so we come away with the points. GO SAINTS!! Team Photos All team photos for both the netball and the football will be taken today in the clubrooms. Remember to be there on time and ready to go. Netball Timetable: 8:30am - 12B, 10am - 15U and 12UA, 11am - 17U and 13U, 12:15pm - A Res and C Grade, 2pm - B Grade, 2:15pm - A Grade

sponsors

Today we welcome back after 30 years the 1984 A grade Football Premiers coached by Richard Hill. It’s been slim pickings in the footy since 84 with an A grade Grand Final loss in 1988 and 2010. The U/18s won their only flag in 2001 coach Rick Carrick followed by the Reserves in 2002 coach Doug Lang first in 50 years. Its worth noting that also in 1984 we had 3 teams runner up in the Grand Final, A grade netball coached by Di Facey, Reserves Football coached by Bob Murray and the U/16 coached by Phil Walker. Only 2 players from the premiership side stuck on and played more than 200 A grade games in Renato Verbena 320 and Phil Hunter 254. Reebs is still involved as son Jack is playing U13’s and may even round up the old man over the next 30 years! Footy was so different 30 years ago with numbers at an all time high and trainings were tough, and more times than not sessions in the club after were even tougher. There was no powerade or coke after training it was schooners and lots of them followed by a visit to the sommery for extra activities until it shut. Saturday nights in the club after the game was huge with no room to move, we even had a keg set up under the TV to fill the punters. Owen Merrett danced on tables while Boppa danced in his bathers? The 1984 footy trip was a ripper to Mildura, we found out Max Kavanagh couldn’t drive a bus, Mick and Barrel dominated the Gul Gul chicks, Hilly got bus sick and Pat Butler was a gun on Ouzo. Congratulations today to 2 club Stalwarts playing their 250th senior game, Nathaniel Robbins (216 A, 34 Res) and Chris Robinson (120 A, 130 Res). Both were vital cogs in the 2002 Reserves Premiership and have been terrific club men over the years. Nat is in career best form and would be leading the A’s B&F while Robbo keeps on keeping on. Also congrats to Cooper Hutchesson on playing his first A grade game last week against South. Younger brother Tanner has been dominating in Adelaide at the State country U/15s championships getting 2nd best in the Grand Final. Have the lads found your home brew stash Hutch? Neil Brown

Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

This week the mighty doggies travel down to Millicent to hopefully pull out 5 wins. A special occasion also with former club captain Chris Anderson playing his 150th senior match for the mighty red and black. The weekends action had mixed results, with the seniors going down by a kick, the reserves winning by a kick, the under 17’s winning by a few, the under 15s winning in a close one and the under 13s having the week off. Thanks to all our donations for the East fundraising auction. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Don’t forget to get down to the club this Saturday night for the 50 club. $50 including drinks and nibbles for 2 and a half hours from 7pm. Get amongst the club and get your lucky number. Go doggies!

On what was thought to be cold and miserable Saturday, Casterton provided a picturesque backdrop for all that travelled over. Those who packed jackets, blankets and beanies embraced the warmth of the sun and enjoyed the fast paced action that is Western Border Netball. A Grade let Casterton/Sanford have a sniff but they pushed hard and the defence gained some important turnovers to hold onto a 4 goal victory! The win was well deserved!! Great team effort in A Reserve. Some really exciting passages of play. You earnt that win girls!! Disappointing loss in the B Grade but they’ve learnt a lot from it. Re-group and settle as a team and look forward to the rest of the season. A slow start in the C Grade put them on the back foot. Excellent 2nd quarter but you have to play 4 quarters to get the win! The 17 & Under girls had a tough match, but kept their composure to take the win. 15 Under girls had more great work in the defence and a rotation of players meant a different perspective on the game. Keep finishing strong girls, proud of you all!!! The 13 & Under girls had a slow start but regrouped to play some great hard fought netball coming away with a convincing win. Great game by the Under 12A girls. Intercepts taken led to fantastic court transition and second efforts payed off! Under 12B had a great win against Casterton/Sanford 13-2. The puppies of our club were able to play in different positions and still work as a team and yet again improve all of their skills. Well done! - Daniela Waters Please note that East Gambier’s Presentation Night has been changed to the 18th of October. Keep an eye out for more details. Don’t forget club teas and presentations at the Club from 5:30pm. TONIGHT!! – 100 Club. Last Man Standing! $50 with drinks included. Win $500. 7-9.30pm. See Bindi or Azza to secure your number! 16 August – Beauty and the Geek party. Come dressed as a Geek or Beauty. $5 entry fee 8pm start. Prizes for best dressed. Couple up to compete for the ultimate prize. 23 August – Last Hoorah!! Last game of the season. Club open 8pm. Entertainment TBC

CATS CAPERS

casterton/SANDFORD Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

The Casterton Sandford Seniors entered into last week’s game knowing that if they defeated East Gambier then they would definitely be playing finals. East Gambier travelled to Island Park knowing they had to beat the Cats to keep their finals chances alive. East kept the Cats goalless in the first quarter to have a 27 point lead at quarter time. The Cats were making simple skill errors that were proving costly, but this is not a team that drops its head and gives up Coach Ayton and his lads play for each other and are willing to grind away until they make things right. Grind away they did, pegging the scores back each quarter and showing superior fitness to their opposition and were able to run down the Doggies with only minutes to spare. Final score: CastertonSandford 11.9.75 defeated East Gambier 10.12.72 Better Players were Dylan Ayton, led from the front all day, plays with passion and supports his men 100%, more than happy to hear he has signed on for 3 more years. Jedd Clode, wears the Number 1 with confidence, great set of hands and along with his brother Todd wreaks havoc on opponents too slow to get rid of the ball or get out of their way. Damian and Daniel Wombwell are another pair of brothers who show no fear and have an uncanny knack of getting to where the ball is going to be. Alex O’Connell is a nuggety on-baller who is finding his feet in the seniors after playing some excellent footy in the reserves, Alex gets in and under everything and more often than not comes out with the leather. Josh Stephenson, has been a fantastic inclusion this year and stands out not just for his wild red hair but for his ability to play any role on the ground. Great to see a few of the East lads stick around for the DJs after the game, good footballers, average dancers, top blokes! This week we welcome North Gambier to Island Park, we have improved every time we have played the Tigers, last time losing by 4 points, so as long as the lads didn’t get to injured on the dance floor last Saturday night we should hear the Cats sing the song of VICTORY! CSFNC Cats B and C Graders fought out intense clashes with both combinations winning the four points and importantly maintained momentum in the lead up to the finals race in a months time. A grade teetered on the edge of a monumental fight back and the 17u challenged strongly against a flag favourite .East proved too strong in the other battles but the Cats played with team spirit pleasing to the Club. Thanks to the 15u team spirit as they combined 13u to field a team for the Club and congratulations to the 12u whose game plan proved their learning over the season. Last night the Club showed their gratitude to the business houses and the community individuals who week in , week out /year in and year out support our Club either through packages or weekly awards to the footballers and netballers. Once again Pete and Donna Jarrad’s bar personnel and our Ladies Committee provided a wonderful meal and enjoyable atmosphere. Our Casterton and district Community is indeed lucky as their generous spirit transcends far wider than football/ netball and we as community are reminded to value not just their sponsorships but their business support them by shopping locally or at least ‘give them a go ‘. Congratulations firstly to our A Reserve playing coach Stacy Chapman on reaching her 200th game today. As a coach, player, umpire and past committee member Stacy’s contribution on and off the court exemplifies the Tiger spirit! Joining her today is our tenacious defender Alannah Campbell who plays her 100th Tigers game. Alannah is also a great ambassador for our club with her passion and commitment to coaching the Under 17 side, umpiring and serving as a committee member. Amber Hood who is renowned for her centre court speed and endless energy plays her 50th game with the club and is a stellar team leader and active club volunteer and umpire. ROOS NEWS

WEST gambier

Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

Well, last Saturday wasn’t the result we wanted in both Senior and Reserve grades! A fair bit of improvement will be needed to figure in pointy end of the season, but with some players due to return from injury should add depth to the seniors and in return, the reserves. The U/17 boys were over run after looking at causing a boil-over against the league leaders, however sides are not on top of the ladder because they only play ¾ of footy, and proved that on Saturday. Better players included Nathan Tilley, Lawrie Bradley- Brown, skipper Ben Stratman, Aden Pfitzner, Brenton Ross and Liam Beckman, while goals came from Jackson Lock 3, Ben Stratman, Liam Beckman, Kyle Giddings and Bronte Aberle. The U/15 went in with high hopes of a win to keep their finals dream alive. Unfortunately this wasn’t to be. Adam Pulford, Jake Brown, Bailey Vonduve , Nathan Taylor, Jack Geddes and Shane Dejong. The U/13 boys were the shining light for the day. Braeden Olds played his best game for the season and was ably supported by Bryce James, Mitchell Hann, Fraser Brewster, Thomas Niewerkerk and Lewis Riley. Goals came from Fraser Brewster, Seth Lock, Mitchell Hann and Lachlan Jones. Today, we welcome South Gambier back to Malseed Park, and with the promise of a bit better weather (and hot showers!) augurs well for the day. We also welcome our Sponsors to the annual day where we are able to thank them for their support during the season. With Mark Yeates returning to West as our special guest, hope that all sponsors enjoy their day. Remember Sunday after recovery, all players are asked to come and help “spring clean” the change-rooms…. Followed by a lunch up in the club after and watch the footy,. All supporters are welcome to come along and join in from 12.30pm. We wish Barb a speedy recovery. Thanks to everyone who made last Saturdays Malseed Cup a huge success, and many thanks, once again to Trevor and Denise and their band of workers for running such a great show. In perfect conditions we headed over to Vansittart Park to tackle North. Our only two winners for the day were the A res – in a fantastic come from behind win, and the C Grade – who had a great win for Bec Humphries 18th birthday. A Grade was always going to be a battle, with West holding an early lead, the game then tied up late in the day and saw North run out 3 goal victors. B Grade let North slip out to an early lead and were never able to head that eventually losing by 9. The 17’s pushed North hard but again North were the victors winning by 8. In the 15’s there was yet another cracker game, with North again running out winners, by 7 this time. In the 13’s North were a class above, but to the girls credit they never gave up and battled their hearts out. The same can be said for the 12’s, who also tried hard but were up against taller girls who had quite a slick game plan. Last Saturday night we had the Malseed Cup – and a fantastic night was had, with a large crowd attending. Huge well done to Denise and Trevor for organising this yearly event. On the social calendar we now turn our heads to the Malseed Wedding next week, with the bridge and groom organising their bridal party, frocks and the all important first dance. A reminder again that Chocolate money is ALL to be returned NEXT week when we play East Gambier. Good luck to all teams today as we host South Gambier. After the weather of the week following up to last Saturday, you could have been forgiven for not wanting to venture outside but it was a great day with the sun actually shining and not a drop of rain to be seen. The lent to great playing conditions and our boys made the most of it with very convincing wins across all grades this week. With Millicent suffering from a lack of numbers in their Reserves side, it seemed that we may have been finishing the day early, however they made up the numbers from their 15 and 17 squads and played out the match. Coach Luke Duncan had reinforced to his charges to “be relentless” and that is exactly what happened in the Senior game. The boys did not let up, with only the second quarter our lowest scoring with just 4 goals 4 kicked. The third and fourth quarters saw 11 and 10 goals kicked each building to a record winning margin of 199 points over the unlucky Saints. Goals were parcelled around the side and Brett Exelby is back equal top WBFL goal-kicker thanks to an 8 goal haul, followed up by Brayden Kain on 4 and Luke Duncan, Sam Walker and Simon Berkefeld on 3 each with BOG performances from Jak Ryan and Brett O’Neil. We take the momentum into this week’s match against an out-of-sorts West. The Roo’s had all the makings of a top two team at the start of the year and have dropped off recently but will be looking at getting back into the swing this close to finals on home turf. Go Demons! If you take the A Grade match and the injuries to Lisa King & Alyssa Boylan out of the equation, Saturday was a good day out for the club as every other side picked up a win. The B grade kept their finals dream alive with a good victory over the Saints with Kate Jennings emerging as the star – we all have theories as to where this outstanding form came from but safe to say she who is always dressed to impress, was out to impress!! The C grade continued on their merry way, topping the 80 goal mark with Lorelie Ellis continuing to shine as she has all season. The A Reserve also put in a good showing, after their disappointing and unexpected loss to the Saints last time at bat. Veterans Toni Sims and Tanya Thomson were best and it took three 17 & under players to cover the absence of Tash Hemmings-Dunn – big shoes to fill. Thanks to Megan. Gemma and Alex for helping out. The 13s had coach Felicity Walker on the verge of a nervous breakdown in the last quarter but the girls got the points and a taste of a few things they will need to work on ahead of finals, while the 15s got the job done comfortably. With a full side back on court, the 17s returned to the winners’ list with Em Gazzard and Liza leading the way but all the girls really lifted from their mid season slump and look set to work hard heading into finals. Teas back at the club after next week’s games against North and Casterton/Sandford. Get in and sit down to a great feed and enjoy the club atmosphere. 100 Club draws every Friday night, be in it to win it!

NEW SANFL CLUB BOUNDARIES Port Adelaide’s recruiting zones have been allocated to three SANFL clubs, with Woodville-West Torrens, Norwood and North Adelaide each receiving portions of the Magpies’ area. Under the approved changes recommended by the league’s Boundaries Commission, the Eagles will gain the majority of Port’s metropolitan zone, including Alberton and the Le Fevre Peninsula. Norwood, which has traditionally had a small rural zone, has been allocated the Pies’ country zone on the Eyre Peninsula while North Adelaide has received Whyalla and Iron Knob from Port in the country and a section of its metropolitan area, including Mawson Lakes. In a process which began in October last year, the Boundaries Commission received both written and verbal presentations from each of the eight non-AFL aligned SANFL clubs. The Boundaries Commission was chaired by SA Football Commissioner Dion McCaffrie and included fellow Commissioner Richard Allen, retired Supreme Court Judge Margaret Nyland, who was also previously Chairperson of the SA Electoral Boundaries Commission and highly respected demographer, Professor Graeme Hugo AO of Adelaide University. ‘’The primary aim of the Boundaries Commission was to achieve an equitable realignment of SANFL club boundaries,’’ Boundaries Commission Chairman Dion McCaffrie said. ‘’As such, the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre from The University of Adelaide was commissioned to assist in the preparation of Geographical Information System mapping and population analysis to inform the reallocation process.’’ To assist throughout the reallocation process, the Boundaries Commission used five major guiding principles. • Club boundaries should be contiguous with the clubs current metropolitan or country zone. • The population of males aged 5 to 14 years, extracted from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2011 Census of Population and Housing at Statistical Area 1 level, would be used to guide the equal distribution of young males between club zones. • Club heartlands would be preserved as much as possible. • Clubs would be consulted with regard to the reallocation. • A desire to keep country leagues allocated to as few individual clubs as possible; in particular a desire to keep the Eyre Peninsula leagues, formerly within the Port Adelaide country zone, within one club zone. In other changes to SANFL club boundaries: Sturt gains the majority of the Adelaide Hills with the Double Blues’ gaining the Birdwood and Kersbrook area from Norwood and Meadows, Kangarilla and Clarendon from South Adelaide. Glenelg receives the Henley and Grange region from Woodville-West Torrens while West Adelaide has been handed areas around Flinders Park, Brompton, Kilburn and Woodville Gardens from the Eagles. Central District will now have sections of Golden Grove, Wynn Vale and Salisbury East within its zone, areas previously controlled by Norwood and North Adelaide. South Adelaide will benefit from the acquisition of Happy Valley and Aberfoyle Park from West Adelaide as well as Reynella, Lonsdale and O’Sullivan Beach from Glenelg. The changes to SANFL club zones will take effect from September 22, with the Boundaries Commission to undertake a review of these changes in late 2016. ‘’The SANFL is pleased to finalise the changes made to the club boundaries after undertaking a thorough process in consultation with the clubs,’’ McCaffrie said. ‘’The Boundaries Commission benefited significantly from the invaluable input of Judge Margaret Nyland and Professor Graeme Hugo during the past nine months.’’ 36
