“THE WESTERN”

FROM THE JUNGLE Last week produced three competitive contests, but in the finish the favourites kept the footy tipsters happy. On paper, which doesn’t usually count for more than the words that are written on it, predicting this week’s outcomes is as hard as trying to get your head around the Coalition’s Climate Change Policy.

Millicent v Casterton Sandford Millicent’s season has been dirtier than a mechanic’s fingernails. Sometimes when you see a light shining in the tunnel it just means you are on the wrong track, but for the long suffering Saints faithful the Phant thinks the train will soon be stopping at their station. Colts like Redman, Gordon, Walker and Nitschke are exciting to watch, let’s hope the Sainters can keep them in their stable. For the Catters there is plenty at stake here. They need to pin their ears back and provide key finishers like Ryan, Stephenson and Killey every chance to post a winning score. With the smell of September in his nostrils, Coach Ayton will be howling louder than a street dog on New Year’s Eve if this one blows up in his face.

THIS WEEK West Gambier v East Gambier The Dogs were good last week against the reigning champs, and with a little more poise when it mattered most could have produced a bigger upset than curdled milk in a café latte. Pups like Smith, McCallum, Janeway, Gray (and others) continue to learn new tricks, they just need to remember to return the stick sometimes. After a string of outs West finally saluted the judge again. Trent Badman looks likely as a big target up forward, something the Roos have been lacking in recent outings. Likewise Anthony Wilson is a key link in the Doggies chain, able to make an impact at either end of the park. And his bulk around stoppages will help nullify the impact of Leaping Roo McElroy. East started the Roos slide down the Hit Parade a few weeks back. Lighting can strike twice, just not this time.

North Gambier v South Gambier South were out of the starting gates last week faster than Rain Man can count toothpicks. With their general directing from the bunker, the Ds ran and spread around Island Park like beavers in a lumber yard. This week they face a different proposition, with North the masters of circling the wagons when the opposition cavalry is in full charge. These two outfits collectively boast more stars than Hollywood Boulevard- BP O’Neil, Berky the Elder, Egan and Egan, Howie, theXlby Factor, Michelin McConnell, Richie O, Paddy Perry…..and so it goes on. And will the little Blachut Duck make a return to the pond? Looking forward to this one.

“THE WESTERN”

WBNA NETBALL ROUND 13 PREVIEW Both the Tigers and Demons are struggling to find consistency as finals approach in Western Border netball, making this weekend’s clash at Vansittart Park a must win for both sides. Both let their respective opponents back into the contest at the weekend and had to be content with draws but the wrinkles need to be ironed out and quickly if either side is to challenge undefeated Millicent and second ranked West Gambier during the 2014 finals. Injuries and player unavailability has hampered both sides at times during the season but both sides just need to start playing four quarters, maintain defensive intensity for longer and look after the ball batter. Chantelle Weir and Malinda Markiewicz combined wonderfully well in the opening half last weekend and need to bring that movement and ability to find space and present strongly for four quarters this weekend. The tight checking combination of Leanne Cameron and Alannah Campbell will make life tough for the duo if they fall back into playing a stagnant circle and the work of Alyssa Boylan, Megan Hein and Liza Mutch on the outside of the circle will also be pivotal as they look to provide better ball movement to allow their shooting duo to shake off their defensive opponents. Lauren Duncan, if available, and Meg Gazzard are two of the best at pressuring mid courters so work rate will be the key to the Demons forward line this weekend. At the other end, North is still looking to settle its attack line but what is for sure is they are all quality players. Audine Bryant, Brianna Walters and Abbey Duncan have all been in good form and Bailey Watson, who has filled the void left by Ashlee Kalantarian, will continue to improve with more senior netball experience under her belt. They certainly won’t get things their own way with Lisa King, Alyce Mourbey and Nicole Butler all expert at getting important touches at critical times. Add to that the hard working Boylan and young wing defender Yazmin King and like at the other end, that pressure on the edge of the circle will be critical to forcing turnovers. North has won both previous encounters easily but South needs to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing draw even more than the third ranked Tigers and if they can put together something close to a four quarter performance might just win a close one. East’s improvement continues to impress but despite pushing North to the limit again, they might find West Gambier a much tougher nut to crack. The Roos would be slightly deflated from their biggest loss to Millicent this season at the weekend and would be looking to right a few wrongs and get back on track. One of the battles of the day will be East coach Bo Richards looking to curb the influence of Roos goaler Lisa Cram and East will also need to put some work into wing attack Carlee Davey, who didn’t miss a beat in her return to the court last weekend and is a key link player for the Roos. The height of Eilish McKay could well be a good match up there with her ability to take the aerial ball and apply good hands pressure over her shorter opponent. Carly Trevilyan loves a challenge and she will have one when she takes on East centre Rachael Hines - both love the physical stuff and will contest every possession and that mid court battle will be another key to the outcome. Tenille Gray returned to the A grade court last weekend to cover for Mary Wilson’s absence and if she brings that form to this weekend, she will certainly test the West defenders, who will also need to starve East shooter Sarah Lock of possession. Lock has been at her accurate best in season 2014, shooting the lights out from long range and her most likely opponent, Mollie Muhovics, will need to be at her tight checking best to deny Lock too many opportunities to score. East certainly won’t throw in the towel at any stage but the Roos, with Kahli Rolton looming large as an influential player under the shooting post, should easily secure the points. Buoyed by their fight back against South last weekend, Casterton Sandford would have hoped the fixture threw up any opponent but the undefeated reigning champions. But the Cats will now have to tackle the Saints with the defensive pressure of Millicent most likely to cause them the most trouble. Led by Hayley Dunn, the backline of Alex Walker, Tanaya Redman and centre Lisa Duldig is relentless in its pressure and refuses to concede space or any easy possession. The work over the shot from Walker and Dunn will 5

“THE WESTERN”

WBNA NETBALL ROUND 13 PREVIEW Cont... also trouble Madalene Cleary and Jan Murphy and that duo will certainly be outclassed in the rebounding stakes by their taller opponents. Murphy will be the key at that end, with ability to find space. The nononsense goaler continues to be in the Cats’ best every week and if she can find her shooting rhythm early she will certainly be a threat at the offensive end. At the other end defenders Abbey Shannon and Ellen Brewster are in outstanding form and were the main reason the Cats stole the draw last weekend. They read the play well and take clever interceptions but they can also play a tight checking game. The problem for them will be the precise ball movement of the Saints forward line – led by Donna Denton. Millicent works the angels well and rarely coughs up a bad pass. The drive of Pip Ellis and Melinda Squire and the work rate of coach Duldig provide great support to Denton and Danika Jolley continues to improve as she learns week from week from Denton. Jolley and Denton rarely remain stationary and work well together to achieve separation from their opponents and while Shannon and Brewster will make their work for it, the same number of turnovers as last week won’t be on offer. Millicent should be able to chalk up a comfortable win – again.

CALL TO ARMS This weekend West Gambier Football Club hosts East Gambier Football Club at Malseed Park for the annual “CALL TO ARMS” game. The event was established seven years ago to help raise both awareness and vital funding for the fight against cancer, in particular types that affect men. A special yellow football donated by the SA Community Football League and branded ‘Give Cancer the Boot’ will be used for the senior grade football match. The winning club will be presented with a gold cup in recognition of its support for cancer awareness and fundraising. The player judged best on ground receives the Phil Muhovics Medal, in honour of a loyal servant of both clubs who sadly lost his battle with cancer a few years ago. Phil Muhovics dedicated a large part of his life as a player and coach of senior and junior teams at the West Gambier and East Gambier football clubs. He left a legacy of honest and fair play, and his approach to football was always “train and play hard”. The day also represents an opportunity for club members and supporters to donate to causes that assist the fight against cancer. There will be a raffle at the gate with all proceeds going to the Leukaemia Foundation Aussie Muscle Car Fundraiser Drive. Local residents Tom Stokker and Mick Mullen will be competing in this special event later this year. The members and committees of both clubs thank the WBFL and the general public for their ongoing involvement and support of this important cause. For further information about reducing your cancer risk visit the Cancer Council Australia site or call our Helpline on 13 11 20 (local call cost anywhere in Australia).

EXPLAINING HOW AUSSIE ‘RULES’ - ACCORDING TO ‘CRACKED’ History Early versions of Aussie rules football came into being when a ragtag bunch of convicts dragged themselves out of the primordial ooze and instinctively started kicking balls around, pausing to eat some oranges about halfway though. It is speculated that they were inspired to do so after witnessing groups of Indigineous Australians doing something similar but not by anyone with an important enough title to make it fact. Organised clubs began being formed around 1858 when everything was still in black and white, which made it quite difficult to tell the competing teams apart and rendered the cone cells in the human eye largely redundant. Nothing proceeded to happen for approximately 150 years due to glaring gaps in our knowledge base until modern times when there was suddenly a fully fledged professsional league called the Australian Football League (AFL).

Rules At its core, Aussie rules is a very simple game made complex by the lunacy of the Laws of the Game committee’s determination to change the interpretation of every rule every week for reasons known only to the enchanted sock puppets that control their every whim. Games are played on an oval field between two teams of 22 players, one of which is the designated substitute that can only come into the game when another player is permanently subbed off, while only 18 from each team are allowed on the field at once. Players are allowed to kick or handball (punching the ball with a closed fist) to each other, while catching a ball that has been kicked is called a mark and results in a free kick to the marking player. There are four goal posts at each end of the ground. Goals are scored by kicking the ball through the middle pair which result in six points, while if it goes through the outside pairs or is not kicked then it is one point which is called a behind, as is a person’s ass. Obviously there are other rules, but aside from these constants pretty much everything else is open to interpretation and seems to change from year to year. For example, in the 1980s the game was won by the team with the least internal hemorrhaging as measured by depth of blood in the locker rooms multiplied by collective fear, and prior to 1901 bonus points were awarded for grooming, breeding and manners. ROOS NEWS

WEST gambier

Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

After a “ dry, wet” spell where the coaching fraternity didn’t know where the next win would come from, we managed 4 from 5 last Saturday. While the boys got across the line, I’m sure Stratty would’ve liked to see them run the game out, but a wins a win and certainly will lift the confidence of the boys for this week’s game. Best for us was Roo McElroy, Brad Wilson, Steve Wenman, Josh Schapel (5 goals) Kayne Obrien and Tom “Pele” Dolan!! Also in the goals was Trent Badman 2, Brad Wilson, Al Kennedy, Jackson Lock, Roo, Holmesy and Els King. The Reserves got Sutes smiling with a good win also. “Young” Jamie Croker with 4, Brodie Koop, Jessie Hewitt, Garret Ha (2 apiece) were our main goals scorers, with Tommy King, Neil Easterbrook, Shaun Sutherland and Matt “Wizz” Weyers one apiece. Best for the day was Luke Pulford, Brady Wilson, Chris Mllich, Garret Ha and Braden Lane. The U/17 played very good footy and are getting primed for the pointy end of the season. Mason Hunter with 4 goals was best afield, Ben Stratman (2 goals) Bryden Wagstaffe (3 goals) our most improved player Bronte Aberle and Liam Beckman rounded out our best. Lewis Lean, Aden Pfitzner, Kyle Giddings all 2 goals and one apiece also to Liam Coleman and Patrick Wilondga. Our U/15 are continuing their good form and impress with another hard fought win. Nathan “Squiz” Taylor, Adam Pulford, Bowen Hosking, Lachie Rees, Bayley Vonduve and Bailey Symonds were our best with Jett Attard 3, Bowen Hosking 2, Zane Kuller, Nick Bone and Sam Coxon one apiece. The thirteens put up a great fight, and just went down at the siren. Henry Riddoch was our sole goal scorer, with Seth Lock, Sean Ross, Lachie Jones, Tome McCourt Bryce James and Thomas Niewerkerk figuring amongst out best players. Today, not only do we welcome East Gambier to Malseed Park, but many Past Players and Officials from times gone by, for our annual Day. As many of them will see numerous familiar family names are still amongst us and we wish you a good day at the footy, once again at this popular yearly event. We are also playing East Gambier for the annual “Call to Arms” Cup, which recognises cancer in men, with the best on ground player presented with the Phil Muhovics Medal at the conclusion of the game. The gate raffle will be run by Mick Mullen and Tom Stokker, today with proceeds going towards the Leukaemia Foundation, that they will participate in later in the year. Please support them and donate generously. In perfect weather we played host to Millicent last week, ending the day with a mixed bag of results. A grade were always going to be up against it, and had a good first half, but the might of the Millicent team kept rolling on to run out winners 45-62. Best players for West were Amy Cram (Holiday) and on her return home from Europe, Carlee Davey (Video Ezy). In the A Res we were still missing quite a few faces which was always going to make things tough. Well done to Liz for popping on the frock again this week, with her team unfortunately going down by 10, 34-44. Award winners were Sammi Cummins (RSL) and Olivia McEvoy (Video Ezy). The B Grade girls were also missing both goalies, and tried a completely new look combination of Kristyn and Georgia in goals. With some great defensive efforts, capitalised on by the goalies they ran out winners 45-31. Dee Watson (Holiday) and Belinda Allen (Video Ezy) were named as best. In the C Grade they had all 9 players available this week – and played a fantastic team game to notch up a win 48-33. The best players went to Bec Humphries (RSL) and Bron Perryman (Video Ezy). In the 17’s we were once again very undermanned (girled??) which was reflected in the scoreline, losing 11-39. Georgia Ferguson and Olivia McEvoy battled hard all day, being named as the best. 15’s had a great win 32-22 in what was a fast paced game. Best players were Maggie Kipping and Georgia Hunter. Although the 13s went down 16-48, the girls are improving and have some great court play at times. Best players were Hannah Witherow and Macy Attard – two players who certainly give their all each week. Lastly the little 12s went down 8-24. These girls are also coming along in leaps and bounds and having a great time whilst doing so. Best players went to Sarah Ritter and Zoe Aberle. Thanks to those that attended Red and Rump night – compliments to the chef !! Remember we have Malseed Cup in a few weeks – so dust off the fascinator and don your raceday best for a terrific night out, which will be followed by the wedding of the year on Aug 16th. Quite a lot happening – so please support these fantastic nights as season 2014 quickly draws to a close. Good luck to everyone today as we host East Gambier. Winner off 200 Club last week – Linda Boylan no 79 Malseed Cup – 2/08/14 – Fashions on the field , sweeps , raffles… come along and join the fun. Sponsors Day – 9/08/14 – 12.00pm Lunch before the game against South Demons- Guest Speaker – Mark Yeates. BULLDOG BARKS

Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

A mixed bag for the Doggies, with only the Under 15’s and Under 13s getting ticks in the win columns. The seniors took on a mantra of “if it bleeds, we can kill it” and looked likely for an upset until being run over in the last. Kev Thomson had a fair day, giving the ball the “You’re luggage” treatment over the fence four times. The reserves are still trying to get everybody onto the park at once, the team keen to say I’ll be back come finals. The under 17’s tried hard, with many kids doing double duty in higher grades so to have them stick around gives the older blokes a boost. Mal Lockwoods all conquering under 15s kept the momentum going, saying to his boys come with me if you want to live through an undefeated season. The new to Saturday under 13s keep on ticking on, with so many faces it’s a matter of asking who is your daddy and what does he do in order to work out the fresh faces to the club. This week we journey down the road to West to try and nab another win. Hasta la vista, baby! A Grade made an upset last week against North coming back from 5 goals down to tie the game at the final whistle. A battle against two young sides, North lead all game, but with tight defence from Morgan Amy and Bo Richards turn overs were created and finished off strongly by Sarah Lock and Tenille Gray. Tenille Gray had a stellar performance for her first game back in 5 weeks after being away for State Basketball, resulting in best player for the team. If only there were a few more seconds on the timer, as East had momentum and could have taken the full 4 points, but to come home with 2 instead is an excellent effort... Well done to all the girls. A Reserve lost 42 – 62. Best were Zoe and Roxy. B Grade lost 42 – 61. Best were Zoee and Issy. C Grade lost 44 – 59. Best were Candice and Michele. 17 & Under won 48 – 36. Best were Rachel and Teagan. 15 & Under won 64 – 26. Best were Tenille and Brenna. 13 & Under lost 12 – 41. Best were Caitlin and Issy. 12 & Under A lost 13 – 44. Best were Brooke and Gemma. 12 & Under B lost 8 – 21. Best were Kate, Jenna and Aliyah. Good luck to all grades at West today. Go Doggies!! 26 July – Red & Black ball. 2 course meal, $50 per person. 6.30pm start. 1 August – Auction Night. Get your paddles ready at 6.30pm. Keep an eye out for more details! 9 August – 100 Club. Last Man Standing! $50 with drinks included. Win $500. More details to come!

Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

Today we welcome all of our wonderful sponsors to Sponsors Day, let’s get a win on the board for them. Make sure we are using our sponsors and not the opposition and make them feel welcome. The welcome can be done in various ways,(and im not suggesting that you try all this on our sponsors unless the lights are dimmed and Ted Mulry is playing) The handshake is the common way, and when doing so make it firm without breaking bones and not soft like your shaking a limp rock cod. The peck on the cheek for the ladies or blokes that bat for the other team can also work, but how far do you go? Almost always it’s not a peck on the cheek it’s only a bonafide cheek rub. A peck on the lips is almost always kept for birthdays however I believe we should step it up and go for an all out pash, what’s the worst that can happen? Get slapped, Catch the Flu, a medium to hard headbutt, a restraining order, false teeth in your mouth, you may even start a relationship? Generally this is followed by a “how are you going”? Which can get awkward if they have just had a sex change or are on parole for Bestiality. If all is running to plan, at this stage you generally buy them a drink and get the weather discussion out the way followed by the hows the kids talk. Then its on to footy for the next 4 hours unless you strike a “Boring Barry“ that you have nothing in common with and begin to pray that Mt Muirhead would erupt and make your escape. The only way out of this situation is going to the toilet and return to a different area and find “Footy Frank”. Stick on tonight for some great Auction items on offer and market bargains. Neil Brown In round 12 we took on West in what was some of the best weather we have had all season. With only a light shower over the A reserve and C grade the day was sunny with no wind, perfect conditions for netball. The A grade girls once again came away with a comfortable 17 goal win despite Wests constant pressure. The A reserve showed what they are capable of winning their game by 10 against the reigning premiers. The B grade and C grade came out firing however were unable to hold the lead both losing to the stronger west sides. Our juniors continue to improve with the 17s showing their true potential winning by a strong 28 goals, the 13s topped that margin coming away with a win of 32 goals. The under 12s also managed a solid win against the junior west girls. The under 15s were unable to defeat a stronger west side going down by 10 goals. Today we play at home hosting Casterton for Round 13. Most teams come away with wins; however today we hope to see all teams come out on top. I am sure there will be some well fought games; let’s play hard so we come away with the points. GO SAINTS!! No notes supplied

Saturdays highlight was the effort, determination and club support for our A Grade who week in week out take up the challenge of playing at W/B highest level. Demonstrating never say die resilience they dragged in the South advantage to salvage a hard fought draw. Top job girls! The 17u flew high to turn the tables on the talented South combination while A Res/ B/ C were once again in epic battles. Tough matchups for our juniors but this band of budding netballers continue to represent the CSFNC with endeavour and sportsmanship competing often against players much older and experienced. Their enthusiasm heartening to coaches. Unfortunately injuries hit us on the courts and the Park last week and we wish all the best in their rehab. Awards: Scarlett Jarrad/ Tori Perry. Club Notes

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank®Branch

Wintery day once again without the rain seen our troop battle the bulldogs at the Kennel. As to be expected all sides got a run for their money with our boys coming out 3 wins to 2 on the day. Congratulations to the social club for a great night on the Mystery Flight. Thanks to the pilots for dogging all the shots going around during the flights. On a sombre note we send our condolences to the family and friends of Dean ”Dingo” Collins who unfortunately passed away last week. RIP a great tiger will be missed by all. Our Under 13’s started off slowly and were well off the pace at half time. The boys managed to switch on and played their best half of the season going down by just over three goals. Best players were: Sam Bruhn, Jack Lockwood, Nathan Bonney, Joel Williamson, Cody Jelleff and Mason Engel. Our Under 15’s went down heavily and left their coach with plenty to work on this week at training. The boys kept battling it out and I am sure will show improvement this week through hard work and persistence. Best players were: Sam Shaw, Damon Argy, Kenny Lam, Declan Carmody, Ryan Jackson and Ethan Maney. U 17 had a game on their hands thru the first quarter and a bit but put their heads down and tails up and completed an excellent result with many players missing thru senior commitments. Best players A. Anderson, M. Walmsley-Pace, J. Jenner, S. Stafford, S. Sochacki, A. Boksem. The reserves continued to build for the finals and with a few good players back in seem to be they could only fall on their own sword. Best players; J. Galpin, M. Silvy, G. Willoughby, B. Kennedy, C. Birks, D. Poyner. Our seniors side packed with half under 18 years of age players committed themselves all day to earn a hard fought win. All the juniors committed and contributed all day and will take this experience onward towards the years end. East never gave up but a bit of polish towards the later stages seen our boys get over the line. Best Players P. Perry, R. O’’Grady, N. Bartetzko, S. Flett, B. Close, M. McInerney. This week we host South in what should be a cracker in all grades. Let’s get along to the footy and enjoy the day Today marks two milestone achievements for A Reserve defender Wendy Gray who has notched up her 300th for the Tigers and also to Georgia McInerney who celebrates her 50th game with the club today. Congratulations girls and we hope that you both enjoy a nice win today to top off your achievements. Now to recap last week’s clash against East. Our netball teams had another productive day only dropping two games in the Under 15 and Under 17 matches. Our C Grade girls enjoyed another satisfying victory defeating East by 15 goals (North 59 to East 44). A Reserve also had a great win (North 62 to East 42) and welcomed back Christie for the second week after a knee injury. Great to see you back out there! Our A Grade girls fought a hard battle with East’s line up resulting in a draw at 47 goals each. Bailey Watson gained some valuable experience in goals and Meg Gazzard was outstanding on court defensively. And in sad news, we wish Molly Watson a swift recovery after she suffered a fracture to her wrist in the Under 15 clash which will see her unable to finish the season. Official scores and club awards for the day were: Under 12 A North 44 to East 13 (Ellen Brown-McDonalds & Wendy’s and Sarah Nulty- RSL) Under 12 B North 21 to East 8 (Tara Bryant-McDonalds & Wendy’s and Lily Tucker-Hungry Jacks) 13 & Under North 41 to East 12 (Sharna McKinnon-RSL & Red Rooster and Lara Willoughby-Hungry Jacks) 15 & Under East 64 def North 26 (Lauren Ross-Dominos & Video Ezy and Georgia Hood-RSL) 17 & Under East 48 def North 36 (Emily Pietsch-Fasta Pasta & Salon 7 and Sienna Allen-Sports Scene) C Grade North 59 to East 44 (Imogen Hardacre-Masters & Squashbrook and Katie Beames-Fasta Pasta) B Grade North 61 to East 42 (Leah Kamphuis-GCP Chemmart & Squashbrook and Mel Liddle-Active 8) A Res North 62 def East 42 (Kerry Bilney-Fasta Pasta & Squashbrook and Stacy Chapman Masters) A Grade Draw North 47 to East 47 (Meg Gazzard-Wine & Squashbrook and Bailey Watson-Active 8) Well done to Annie Stephenson who was recognised for her umpiring contributions and once again, thank you to all our sponsors! “THE WESTERN”

The rain managed to hold off for most of the day over the border at Casterton last week and South came away with some good wins. Only the Reserves missed out this week by just two points after a very closely fought match. It looked like the game was in the bag but a goal from the Cats in the final seconds of the last quarter put paid to the clean sweep for the day. It has been mentioned that our Senior side is one of the fastest in the league and it certainly was on show last week with a blistering performance from everyone allowing 7 goals to be put on the board in the opening quarter. The relentlessness continued in the second with another 4 goals and holding the Cats back to just 2 points. The Cats were kept in their rooms for a long period of time and whatever was said certainly had an impact with the home side booting 4 goals in the third against just one from us. We stepped back up in the final quarter with another 4 goals, finishing up the day with a 48 point win.4 goals from Simon Berkefeld and 2 each from Jak Ryan, Brett Exelby, Carl Slape and Chris Williams with great on filed performances from Brent Howard, Brett O’Neil and Brad Bryant all ensuring a great outcome. We are back in town today visiting Vansittart Park for the second time this year. The first visit to Tiger land ended in a draw so let’s see if we can go one better. Go Demons! It has been remiss of us as a club not to congratulate Olivia Dukalskis (Under 15) and Megan Hein (Under 17) for earning selection in the top 10 players in their age group at the recent regional championships. It is a great achievement by these two Demons as they took on the rest of the State and proved themselves to be two of the best players going around in junior ranks. We are certainly fortunate to have them plying their trade at South Gambier Netball Club. The girls head to Adelaide in October for some specialist training and we look forward to them bringing back even more expertise for the 2015 season. Today is the last day to hand in your Krispy Kreme orders so make sure you finalise those and get the orders to your coach. Hopefully you’ve all been busy selling the delicious doughnuts to friends, family and work colleagues. Tonight is the Red & Rump night at the club go get your glad rags on and head to the club for some dinner, drinking, live music, an auction and a whole lot of fun. Tickets are $40 a head. Let your coach know if you haven’t already decided to be a part of the fun so you can be added to your team’s table.

WBNA NETBALL ROUND 12 REVIEW East Gambier has come agonisingly close to defeating North Gambier for second time this season but their last quarter comeback was cut short by the timer and the two teams had to settle for a draw. It was one of two draws for the round with South Gambier coughing up what was at one stage a 13 goal lead to a tenacious Cats outfit that smothered the Demons in the final stanza to come from an eight goal three quarter time deficit to snare a draw. That left top ranked Millicent as the only winner of round 12, with the Saints notching their most comfortable win yet over the Roos with a final margin of 17 goals. But all the drama was at McDonald Park and Island Park. Missing tall teenage shooting sensation Mary Wilson, who is away on State duties, the Tigers were clear favourites to reverse the earlier result that saw the Bulldogs snare a shock one goal victory. But East had another teenage sensation to fill the void and Tenille Gray, fresh from her stellar State basketball duties, grabbed the opportunity with both hands and was one of the Bulldogs best. It was North that got the better start, despite starting with coach Audine Bryant on the sidelines, with Meg Gazzard one of the dominant players for the quarter – but just creating turnovers but also being a key link player through the mid court. Fortunately East’s turnover queen, coach Bo Richards, was also on fire, keeping her young side in the hunt and at the first change, the visitors enjoyed a two goal lead. Some early missed chances in the North shooting circle early in the second looked set to prove costly as Gray started to find time and space and converting truly at the other end, But some hard working link play from Brianna Walters who consistently found the edge of the circle, ensured North’s attack line settled and found some better shots and at the half, the lead for the Tigers was three. Bryant entered the fray in the second half, with Lauren Duncan moving to the familiar role of centre and Bryant using her pace and athleticism to work the more confined spaces at wing attack. Bryant and Abbey Duncan started to control the Tigers attacking half and dominated the quarter, but thankfully at the other end, Sarah Lock, who is having one of her best seasons since graduating to A grade as a talented junior, finished with impressive accuracy from every range and the Bulldogs, while five goals down, were not out of the contest at the final change. East’s defensive pressure stepped up another notch in the last, as Richards and Morgan Amy refused to concede any easy possession and Lock and Gray ensured they got full scoreboard value for every turnover. Fortunately for North, Alannah Campbell was able to disrupt some of East’s attacking forays as the match settled into a goal for goal contest. With scores tied away at the death knock, it was North who had the centre pass and the chance to win but a replayed ball put paid to that and East ran out of time in transition to set up a scoring shot. While it was the same result at Island Park it was a very different contest. South came out of the blocks firing, with Lisa King and Alyce Mourbey creating a number of turnovers and Alyssa Boylan linking well with her shooters, Chantelle Weir and Malinda Markiewicz, who both found good space and finished accurately. But then the South script of seasons 2014 kicked in as lacklustre errors and poor decision making saw the Cats claw their way back and with Jan Murphy finding space late in the quarter and finishing accurately, what had been a six goal buffer at one stage was only one at the first change. The ability of Ellen Brewster and Abbey Shannon to create turnovers was also pivotal in the comeback. South again got the better of the start in the second quarter as Nicole Butler started to get some important touches on the defensive wing and also sent some classy long delivery into Weir and Markiewicz who continued to finish well. Liza Mutch was also a key in the first half. The youngsters speed onto the circle’s edge provided great support to Boylan, who was doing as much important work at the defensive end of the court as she was offensively. In fact it was the relentless defensive pressure from Boylan and Butler on the circle’s edge and the tight marking of King and Mourbey that ensure the Demons enjoyed a seven goal half time advantage. The Cats switched their shooting roles at the main break, as well as moving Haylee Rhook to wing defence, changing roles with Scarlett Jarrad. Initially the changes didn’t have the effect coach Trictia Cleary was hoping for as South dominated the early going to build a 13 goal advantage halfway through the third. Weir was finding good space in the shooting circle and the defensive line of the Demons was continuing to create turnovers. But again, late, Brewster and Shannon were again able to intercept some poorly thought out South passes, and Murphy and Madalene Cleary finished off their good work to ensure the three quarter time deficit was in single digits – eight goals.
