A NSew ermon Sermon Notes Series

If You Really Knew Me, Part 5:

“Family Values” Ephesians 5:15-20  Leadership in the Home (a.k.a. family values) Contrary to what many teach, leadership in the home is not about power or control. Paul writes about mutual submission (Ephesians 5:21) and calls husbands to be Christ figures (Eph 5:23-25). And how did Christ lead the church? He provided, taught, wept, healed and died on a cross. Spiritual leadership means giving up yourself for someone else (Eph 5:25). It means assuming

responsibility

for

the

health

and

development

of

your

relationships. Take a moment this morning and again during the course of this week to evaluate these 6 values: initiative: Do I give direction and take responsibility for my primary relationships? intimacy: Do I experience intimacy with God and others through open conversation? influence: Do I exercise biblical influence by encouraging and developing others? integrity: Do I lead an honest life, unashamed of who I am when no one is looking? identity: Am I secure in who I am in Christ? Or am I defensive? inner character: Do I exhibit the future of the Spirit in my life, including self-discipline?

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MEALS Due to schedule conflicts and after further discussion between the church staff and cooks it has been decided that the Wednesday night meals will resume on September 16. However, we still need your help. You do not have to be able to cook but we need hands for chopping, mixing, serving, etc. as well as cleaning. If you can do any of these things and would be willing to help for a few hours or the whole time on any Wednesday between the hours of 12 noon - 6:30 (7:30 if you volunteer for after meal clean up) starting September 16 please email/call Paula Wilson p_wilson@comcast.net or 615-347-6239. It is not necessary to commit to every Wednesday we are grateful for any time you can give us and it would help to know in advance who we can count on to be there. Your willingness to serve is greatly appreciated.

For many people, the start of a new school year brings back routine. As fun as the summer is with all the time we spend in pools, lakes, oceans and more, we all long to slip back into “normal.” Because of this, I would argue that the start of a new school year is more conducive to “new life resolutions” than even the start of a new calendar year. I can remember the start of every new school year making the same resolution, “I am not going to fall behind, I am going to stay ahead.” Year after year, however, I never took the time to implement the one value that could make that happen: Study Habits. This series will challenge us to learn the skills necessary to develop great Bible Study Habits and take greater ownership in our personal spiritual growth.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.---II Timothy 2:15
