Message from the President

> We are focusing on SHARED EXPERIENCE. By maximizing our virtual platforms our goal is to create meaningful connections, support the learning experience and celebrate top accomplishments within our community. Be prepared to have raw experiences and some fun along the way.

Welcome to this special conference edition of WBE Canada Magazine!

> We are focusing on VALUE for our community. To maximize your conference experience, we challenge you to be intentional and prepare in advance. What is your expectation from this event? Who do you want to meet? What do you want to learn? How do you want to be transformed? What experiences, advice, insights can you share with other attendees? Going the extra mile will provide the best value for you during the upcoming conference.

While 2021 was yet another unprecedented year, the best is still ahead of us. With our 12th Annual Conference (2nd virtual conference) around the corner, we are getting excited to meet our community, connect you to the latest updates and information and provide you with an unforgettable experience. This year’s conference is titled “Moving Forward Together: Driving Change Through Supplier Diversity”. And there could be no other more appropriate theme. Because we are moving forward together and those three words, for me, are filled with excitement, energy and promise.

The following pages are filled with information about the upcoming conference that will help you prepare and maximize your time. You will meet our Sponsors, Exhibitors, Speakers, Award Finalists, and the Conference Team. Discover the program we’ve planned, meet the expert speakers who are joining us this year and have a look at the Breakout Sessions so you can plan ahead. We also have a couple of very informative guest articles included in this Magazine issue - EDC is sharing their tips on how women entrepreneurs can overcome the barriers they face when looking to take that giant leap to global markets and BDC brings important insights into growing the number of diverse entrepreneurs necessary to build back Canada’ economy. You’ll hear more about both these topics during the conference. And lastly, we have a few surprises to keep you on your toes!

WBE Canada made a commitment a year ago to continue to support our communities and to grow through the pandemic no matter what challenges we faced. We too were resilient, we also had to pivot, we were innovative in how we operated and how we reached out to keep connected. We listened to your needs and we did our very best to support both WBEs and Corporate Members. Some of my favourite 2021 projects include Supplier Diversity Toolkit, two research studies, Tools For Growth Library, French translation for our website and of course, WBE Canada Magazine. Our team has worked hard over the past year to not only prepare the resources and host this year’s conference but also to map out new programs and initiatives for 2022. If you have not registered for this year’s conference yet - you don’t want to miss these new announcements. We are bravely taking on new challenges and creating new opportunities for Canadian women-owned businesses. And that is because we believe that it will take each of us to support economic recovery post pandemic. And we also believe that the best approach is to work TOGETHER.

I hope you truly enjoy this special conference edition of WBE Canada Magazine. A huge thank you for the incredible support from our community, committees and volunteers for helping us along the way. To this year’s sponsors - thank you for supporting our work and helping us turn this year’s conference into a reality. If you are registered, we look forward to seeing you on November 9-10 – we start at 10:30 AM EST sharp. If you haven’t purchased your conference ticket yet, then do so now. You don’t want to miss our BEST conference yet and incredible networking and learning opportunities that happen only once a year! Visit www.wbeconference. ca for more information.

What to expect at this year’s conference? > We are focusing on CONNECTION, not perfection. Almost the entire conference will be streamed LIVE allowing more engagement and better conversations in real-time. Join us to build authentic relationships and get to know the community.

Message from the Chair Dear Conference Attendees, On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am so thrilled to welcome you all to the 2021 WBE Conference! What a year! Despite grappling with the events of this year, WBE Canada and our community is thriving! Over the last year we’ve increased the number of WBEs within our community to almost 400, and now have over 55 corporate members and partners who are all passionate about female entrepreneurship and ensuring our supply bases are representative of the communities in which we live, work and serve. Within the board we’ve been proud to witness the continual evolution of WBE Canada alongside new board and committee members. Earlier this year, I was honored to step into the role of Chair, alongside Mike Pacholok as Vice-Chair. We have been so impressed by how many WBEs, corporate and government representatives and partners have led discussions, provoked conversations, stimulated our minds, and steered us forward in spite of lockdowns and so many other unprecedented challenges. Many corporations have stepped up to support WBEs, and every week we hear positive anecdotes of WBEs who have been critical in maintaining supply chains, providing innovation, and consistently demonstrating that supplier diversity is an effective and important business strategy. We hope our 2021 Annual Conference provides you with inspiration, motivation and hope, and that you take the opportunity to enhance connections, reconnect with friends, and look forward personally and professionally to 2022. As Chair of the Board, and on behalf of

our directors, and our various committees, thank you to each and every one for joining us at this year’s conference, and for participating and for engaging in important dialogue. Thank you to all our ongoing supporters, volunteers, committee and board members, speakers and anyone that’s engaged or advocated for WBE Canada. We, of course, cannot forget the WBE Canada team who are so passionate about creating an inclusive and valuable community for us all. Remember, we always need more volunteers and committee members! We have ambitious goals and high hopes for WBE Canada in 2022. You have our commitment that we will continue to advocate for women owned businesses, support Canada’s public and private organizations in their supplier diversity journey and keep pushing for increased recognition that women-owned businesses and supplier diversity together are key to Canada’s economic recovery and growth. Diversity is Canada’s present and future. Let’s hope by this time next year we can all be drinking a glass of bubbly together and celebrating our continued success!

With best wishes, MADDY BAKER | Chair, WBE Canada Board of Directors

Championing diversity to build a more equitable economy, one entrepreneur at a time By Liana Gitto, Advisor, Supplier Diversity and Procurement, BDC

Entrepreneurs are the driving force behind our economy. They use their passion and skills to build a business out of a vision. They create jobs and lead change in our communities.

internal teams and external partners to understand the unique challenges of each entrepreneurial group. Then, we act by developing solutions with tangible, measurable outcomes.

I have been fortunate to work directly with business owners for close to 10 years, mostly in procurement and supplier diversity, and have seen first-hand how impactful it is when entrepreneurs, regardless of race, gender, age or sexual orientation have access to the resources, financing and networks they need to succeed.

LISTEN, LEARN, AND ACT Already this year, we have partnered to deliver many initiatives to support diverse entrepreneurs across Canada. This spring, we worked with the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce to conduct the first survey of Black entrepreneurs called Building Black Businesses in Canada.

I am proud to work for an organization that has such an authentic, purpose-driven focus on diversity. As Canada’s bank for entrepreneurs, at BDC we want our organization and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, to reflect Canada’s diverse workforce and business community.

Armed with these learnings, and support from national and regional partners, we launched a three-part webinar series for Black entrepreneurs that focused on financial literacy, e-commerce, and networking.

While me and my team focus specifically on creating an inclusive supply chain, there are so many initiatives across the bank to increase the number of diverse owned and led businesses. I would like to briefly talk to you about some of them.

Evident in all the research and feedback to-date is the lack of capital available. To help fill this gap, we worked with the National Aboriginal Capital Corporations Association (NACCA) to develop the Indigenous Growth Fund, with Futurpreneur to deliver the Black Entrepreneur Startup Program, and with FACE on the Black Entrepreneurship Loan Program.

TAILORED SOLUTIONS FOR UNDERSERVED ENTREPRENEURS

We are also collaborating with partners to develop tools and resources like our Resource Guide for Women Entrepreneurs and Pitch Better’s FoundHers dashboard that acts as a networking and knowledge sharing hub for over a thousand Black women-owned businesses. I invite you to check out these useful resources.

Research tells us some entrepreneurs are underserved, including but not limited to Indigenous, Black, and women business owners. They face more barriers when starting or growing a business and they lack representation which leads to smaller networks and fewer role models, and they have limited access to funding. In many cases, the pandemic has also been harder on these businesses.

This is the type of tailored approach we take. We are making progress, but we still have a lot of work to do on this journey to a more inclusive Canada and equitable economy.

To help address these barriers, we have developed an impactful BDC approach to Client Diversity. Our commitment is to listen and learn, working with our 10

Things Women Entrepreneurs Should Know About Exporting By Export Development Canada (EDC)

Exporting is a proven means to sustained growth, but it can be daunting. Women entrepreneurs often face barriers in securing financing, accessing working capital, navigating trade rules, and managing logistics. But that shouldn’t hold you back. Export Development Canada (EDC) is working to remove those barriers to international trade.

1

Exporting isn’t just for large companies.

You may think exporting is something only large companies do. But even micro businesses are exporters if they sell goods and/or services to customers outside Canada. All it takes is one sale to a customer in the United States.

Interested? Your first step is to research your business’s global potential and learn more about exporting. Sign up for a free MyEDC account to access expert-led webinars, articles, and other helpful resources for growing your business internationally.

We’ve committed $200 million in equity support for our Inclusive Trade Investments Program and set new 2023 targets to create more opportunities for women, Indigenous and minority-owned and -led export businesses. That support, along with our expertise in international risk, means that we can equip you with the tools—trade knowledge, financial

2

Companies that export outperform those that don’t, and stay in business longer.

Exporting can be an effective strategy to build a sustainable business. Canada represents less than 2% of the global market, so expanding internationally increases your customer base and opportunity to generate higher revenues—an average of 121% more than non-exporting companies.

3

You can insure your sales to reduce risk.

EDC Select Credit Insurance mitigates the risk of non-payment that comes with every sale: If your customer doesn’t pay, we will. We work with businesses of all sizes to insure a single contract as low as $5,000 or multiple contracts worth up to $500,000 each. Until the end of 2021, EDC Select Credit Insurance is available to all Canadian businesses, whether your customer is in Canada or abroad. Plus, most financial institutions will extend credit against your insured receivables, providing an additional source of funding.

24

solutions, equity, insurance, and connections—to grow your business with confidence. Here are five things you should know about exporting and how EDC helps.

4

International trade agreements provide benefits for exporters.

The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) encourages these countries to increase commercial opportunities for SMEs owned by under-represented groups, including women. The Canada–European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) gives Canadian exporters preferential access to one of the world’s largest economies. Want to learn more about putting these agreements to work for your business? EDC’s trade advisors can provide free customized answers to your trade-related questions.

5

EDC is here for you.

If you’re interested in exporting, you don’t have to go it alone. We’re committed to helping you realize your global potential and feel empowered to make bold decisions with the right financial tools and expert knowledge.
