BSc (HONS) HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT MODULE SYNOPSIS DEVELOPING HUMAN RESOURCE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

by their faculty and the University. The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate your capacity to work independently on a major piece of research and to utilise and build on skills and subject expertise developed in the promotion of your professional and personal skills. You will demonstrate your ability to analyse problems and to apply appropriate professional and selfdevelopmental skills.

As well as developing critical intellectual capabilities, the module is designed to target the key areas of human resource practice and procedure in which the demonstration of core skills is vital. It will support the CIPD concept of the ‘Thinking Performer’ - a practitioner who is knowledgeable and competent, forward thinking, and adds value through continuous challenge and self-imposed improvement goals - and seeks to consciously to develop these reflexive skills.

You will work with your tutor to research, develop and present your study for assessment following the agreed formats prescribed by the University.

This module will provide a distinctive opportunity for the student to develop and demonstrate a sound understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by Human Resources (HR) professionals, whether in a generalist or specialist role, and as described in the CIPD HR Profession Map (HRPM).

By applying their acquired learning from research and exploration of academic and professional texts to their individual work based professional knowledge and experience, the module will enable students to explore the competencies required by the HR professional when collaborating and working with others, when functioning efficiently and effectively, while also considering the role of HR in demonstrating and promoting ethical behaviour in an organisational context.

DISSERTATION

This module provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their capacity to work independently on a major project and to utilise and build on skills and subject expertise developed other units of their degree programme. Students will work with their tutor to research, develop and present their study for assessment following the agreed formats prescribed

HRM AND THE MANAGEMENT OF CHANGE

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop their workplace skills in the management of change. Therefore allowing students to investigate their own or relevant organisation in relation to change management from a number of theoretical perspectives. Students will begin by considering their organisation’s business and market position, its structure and how it operates, to develop an understanding of the context within which change happens. They will then consider how organisational structure and culture may enable or inhibit the process before critically investigating and evaluating change management theoretical models and exploring the impact of change upon people and the skills needed by effective change agents and organisations. Finally, the student should use their learning to inform a study of change management in their particular organisation with particular reference to the HR function’s contribution to effective change management, and make recommendations about change strategies for the future.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT WITHIN THE ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT

Human resource (HR) professionals need to understand key developments in the business and external contexts within which HR operates. This module enables students to identify and review the business and external contextual factors affecting organisations and to assess the impacts of these factors on the HR function in their organisation. The module also examines HR’s role in strategy formulation and implementation and in ensuring that the appropriate mechanisms are in place to promote and support the concept of ‘high performance working practices’. The module is designed to encourage learners to adopt a critical perspective of these contexts and to provide workable organisational and HR solutions to address them.

INTEGRATING PROFESSIONAL HUMAN RESOURCE EXPERIENCE

This module is designed to develop and assess student’s ability to reflect critically on their professional practice and experiences within a HR environment/ workplace. The Module utilises the skills acquired in the previous Module - Study Skills for Distance Learning. Theme A of the first Module encouraged the development of reflective skills focused on the student’s individual approach to distance learning. Integrating Professional Experience (IPE) enables the student to further develop those reflective skills by focusing them on recent professional management experience. Theme B of the first module introduced the student to essay writing with a short work on a subject of their own choice and this Module further develops those essay writing skills as the student is required to write a somewhat longer piece on issues related to outcomes from their individual reflections.
