From The Principal This will be the last newsletter you will receive from me as the Wayzata High School principal. It has been my honor and priviledge to be the principal of WHS the last six years. We have wonderful students, staff and best of all supportive parents. Without your help and support, WHS would be a difficult place to run. Thank you very much for all you have done for our students, staff and myself over these six years.

The year is winding down and as usual things get very busy. Prom is coming up on Saturday, May 16 at International Market Square, Senior Awards will be held on Monday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. and Empty Bowls Event starts 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. These events are followed up by the “big day”. Graduation is held on Friday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. on the University of Minnesota campus at Mariucci Arena. There are many more events in May so please make sure to check the calendar.

Again, I would like to thank you for all your help over the years! If you need me after June 15, I will be the new principal at Oakwood Elementary. Wayzata’s 12th Annual Instrument Consignment Sale will take place on June 9 & 10, 2015 in the Wayzata High School Cafeteria, (Door #34) - 4955 Peony Lane N. Plymouth, MN 55446 Sellers can bring their instruments for evaluation and pricing by local repair

and sales professionals on Tuesday, June 9 between 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. If the instrument is sold the following night, the seller will receive the proceeds less a small commission, which supports our school’s band and orchestra programs.

Buyers looking for starter, second or upgrade instruments will have a chance to

find what they need from among our large selection of pre-screened instruments on Wednesday, June 10 between 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to demonstrate the instruments for sale and to help beginning string players find appropriately sized instruments. Special maintenance plans will be available for purchase from area music stores (this is a great offer not usually available on instruments purchased through EBAY or Craigslist!). All sales are cash or check only.

SUMMER SCHOOL NOTICE: Students who need

to make up credits are strongly encouraged to sign up for summer school. Two sessions are scheduled for June 15 – July 1, and July 6 – 22, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and will be held at Central Middle School this summer.

Students have the opportunity to take two classes (and earn two credits) during each session (therefore possibly earning four credits total in summer school).

Busing is provided before the first class (7:30 a.m.) and after the second class (11:00 a.m.), and attendance is crucial. Independent study (for ages 16 and up) will run during the summer as well. Copies of the registration brochure are available in the Counseling Office.

SOPHOMORE AND JUNIOR PARENTS:

With thousands of colleges, dozens of military options, employment options and gap year opportunities, many parents don’t know where to start or how to help their students decide on post-high school plans.

The CCC, Naviance www.connection.naviance.com/ wayzata and the Wayzata High School website are full of information and links to guide you. Another great place for your student to start is to schedule a planning meeting with his/her counselor! Parents are welcome to join in those meetings, too! The high school will be closed and counselors will not be available from June 15 – July 31, so we encourage students and families to schedule their planning meeting for a time before the end of this school year, if possible.

SENIOR INFORMATION:

It is important that seniors keep track of credits and maintain passing grades to ensure on-time graduation. Seniors must have 60 credits to graduate and participate in the commencement ceremony on May 29. Keep up the hard work during Term 4 – those credits are needed for graduation, too! Students who need to make up credits should check with the Counseling Office. Counselors have distributed transcripts at every group guidance session and have sent letters home to parents of students who are short credits. It is ultimately the responsibility of students and parents to make sure all graduation requirements are met on time.

BUYER BEWARE!

Students and parents may get numerous mailings regarding scholarship searches, college application assistance, etc., especially junior and senior year.

These mailings are from companies not affiliated with Wayzata High School and usually charge a fee for their services. The Counseling Office receives calls from parents every spring regarding such mailings.

Our advice is buyer beware! The services that these companies offer are often services we provide or have access to at the high school. They are usually not worth the money they cost, if they are even legitimate to begin with. We do not endorse them and recommend caution when considering such mailings and offers.

Chemical Health Dear Parents/Guardians of Prom Goers, As Chemical Health Coordinator, I generally write a few words around prom time, to create awareness of some of the risk taking that may occur during this season.

It is very important to mention that most students who attend prom are truly enjoying the moment. I am sure it starts well before showing up at International Market Square. It starts with making plans about who is going with who be it a group event or an official date. Just like a vacation, the preparation is part of the prom process.

Whether or not you regard prom as a rite of passage, behaviors can be different than what is usually typical of your child. Pressure from the “prom culture� can easily influence decisions such as participating in a party bus, taking off to a cabin up north without adult supervision and all night co-ed sleepover parties.

I have observed prom from chaperoning for seventeen years. It is truly a remarkable event and absolutely enjoyable to see so many students having the time of their lives. The venue, the food, the attire, and the turnout are amazing. Students arrive in a variety of transportation modes; cabs, party vans or busses, the regular car and of course the limousine gets our students safely to prom.

Are you part of the post-prom planning? Do you host a breakfast afterwards? Are you helping other parents with supervision? There are so many creative ways to make sure our youth stay safe post-prom and I encourage you to reach out to other parents and have this conversation and combine resources to have a safe place after prom. Please know if your child actually attends prom as we occasionally hear of students who have purchased tickets but never show up. That is concerning as we take their safety to heart.

Prom commences a season of higher risk activities for youth as they celebrate year end events. As prom nears, please take a few minutes to have an open conversation about their plans before and after and how you ca n hel p .

It is a time for our yout h to exercise independence without g etting taken away in a moment of decision making that can change the tone of the evening.

We all share in the safety of our youth and we need everyone to share in the responsibility.

Around WHS AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AWARDED SUMMER STUDY TRIP TO GERMANY

Cody Hou (11), a student at Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minnesota, has been awarded an all-expense paid trip to Germany.

Cody Hou was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 98th percentile on the Level 3 2015 National German Exam for high school students sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Nearly 21,000 students participated in the program. After qualifying with a high score on the National German Exam, he submitted responses to several short essay questions in German and in English and was then interviewed by a committee comprised of high school teachers and college professors of German.

Cody Hou is one of forty-four outstanding German students selected from across the US to receive the award. The study trip includes round-trip air transportation to Germany from New York, a homestay in a host family, and excursions to places of cultural and historical significance.

The study trip award is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany.

‘This program gives students the chance to experience Germany firsthand by living with a German family and attending school,” said Keith Cothrun, Executive Director of the AATG. “lt’s a once in a lifetime opportunity”.

Cody Hou and other winners will travel to Germany this summer. He is a student of Karen Nickel and Esther Neu, German teachers at Wayzata High School.

Seventeen other Wayzata High School students of German were also honored for their high achievement on the National German Exam, earning Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates from the AATG. Founded in 1926, the AATG represents German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of language, literature and culture of the German-speaking countries.

Around WHS PRIMAVERA ART EXHIBITION Plymouth’s annual spring art exhibit, Primavera, was on view from April 16 thru April 20. The Primavera exhibit showcases the work of local area adult and high school artists who use a variety of media, including oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, graphite drawings, metal sculpture, pottery, photography, fiber art and mixed media.

THE ACHOO! OF SPRING

After a long winter, Minnesotans rejoice over signs of spring. But for many, spring brings seasonal allergies which translate into misery. As trees, grasses and weeds bloom, pollen is released into the atmosphere. For those who are allergic to such substances, the immune system can kick into overdrive once those tiny grains enter the nose.

The immune system mistakes the pollen as a foreign invader, beginning a chain of reactions which in turn triggers the hallmark symptoms of allergies: congestion, sneezing, runny nose, coughing, itchy and/or watery eyes, dark circles under the eyes (“allergic shiners”) and fatigue.

Allergy symptoms may be particularly bothersome on dry, windy days as air currents spread the pollen for miles. Rain, on the other hand, can wash away the allergens and decrease symptoms. The pollen count measures the amount of allergens in the air in grains per cubic meter. It often peaks in the early morning hours.

Although many people self-diagnose allergies, it is advisable to see a medical provider to confirm the condition and establish an appropriate plan of care. Strategies to keep allergy symptoms under control may start with simple lifestyle adaptations: • Close doors and windows when pollen counts are high; consider using air conditioning • Delegate outdoor chores that stir up allergies • Time outdoor activities (such as jogging or biking) when pollen counts are at their lowest level • Shower and launder clothes after prolonged exposure to allergens • Clean floors frequently using a vacuum with a HEPA filter Sometimes the strategies listed above aren’t enough to prevent allergy symptoms and medications may be indicated. They range from steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines and decongestants to eye drops and allergy shots. Some formulations are available

over the counter while others require a prescription.

The Achoo! Of Spring CONTINUED...

Medications may have side effects such as sleepiness, dryness of the nasal passage and throat irritation.

There are a variety of natural therapies available and many are promoted on the internet. Research is mixed on their effectiveness. It is important to remember that just because a treatment is labeled “natural” doesn’t always mean it is safe. There is a risk such approaches may cause their own side effects or reactions with other medications.

In accordance with District guidelines, the Health Services staff is allowed to dispense only ibuprofen and acetaminophen with parental permission during school hours. No medication to treat allergy symptoms is available unless a signed prescription from a medical provider is on file and parents/guardians provide the medication in its original container. If your child suffers from allergies, develop a treatment plan with your medical provider that helps minimize the unwanted symptoms of seasonal allergies, allowing the student to perform at the top of his/her game throughout the school day. ~Sue

Around WHS SPRING BREAK IN CHINA

Seven WHS students spent Spring Break in China. It was the 8th trip since we started the Chinese program at Wayzata. They have been unbelievable experiences for all of the participants.

As usual, we visited Beijing, Xian and Shanghai. We saw, touched, toured the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven; the City Wall, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda; the Water Town, Shanghai cruise and so on. If you are interested, come to the informational meeting in the fall or see Ms. Heng. Until then, have a great end of the year!

Registration Open for 2015 Fall Trojan Tots!

We invite you to consider enrolling your child(ren) in the Fall 2015 Trojan Tots preschool. This is a program for community preschoolers offered through the Child Psychology and Parenting II class at Wayzata High School.

The purpose of Trojan Tots is to provide high school students with the opportunity to observe children and apply their understanding of child development concepts while planning and presenting daily learning activities for the preschoolers. Your child(ren) will participate in a variety of learning activities such as science, math, art, music, and language development. Movement activities and a light snack will occur each day. Preschoolers who are 3 - 5 years old and potty-trained are welcome to join us. Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities or skills to work with children with special needs.

As we near the close of the school year, I wanted to provide a recap of PTO activities for the school year.

Around WHS GET A JUMP ON THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR!

Help Health Services provide optimum care for your student by using upcoming summer months to put health records and health plans in order for the beginning of the new school year!

1. Complete (or update if the form has been previously completed) the Student Contact and Health Information form through Family Access in Skyward (for Family 1 only to prevent confusion). Just click on the Sign In button near the top of the Wayzata District website. You will need your user name and password. The form is listed under Home on the left side of the page.

Enter the current date as you begin to fill in the information. Upon completing each step, click on the box “I have completed this step.” The final step is to click on the “Submit” button on the right hand side of the last page. For Skyward assistance, contact Marie Reed (763-7455110) or Amy Sorenson (763-745-5109).

2. Parents/guardians may update phone numbers and email anytime through Skyward Family Access. It is imperative to keep contact information current so the Health Services staff can contact parents/guardians in the event of an illness or injury at school. Address changes must be made through the Welcome Center (763-745-5240).

3. If your student has diabetes, asthma, seizures or allergies/anaphylaxis risk, provide a current health plan and appropriate medication. The forms are available on the District website under “Departments” then “Health Services.” Select “Student Health Plans” from the blue column on the left side of the page.

Due to the size of the high school campus, students are encouraged to carry emergency medicine such as inhalers or epinephrine pens in their backpacks if it is noted on the health plan and parents /guardians are comfortable with that approach. Please note – Health Services does not stock epinephrine.

4. Medication, if it is to be given at school, requires a new form each year, signed by the parent/

guardian and the medical provider. The form is available on the Health Services section of the District website. Please also note for a high school student to carry ibuprofen or acetaminophen, a signed agreement should be on file each year.

5. Review your student’s immunization record in Skyward. If you have previously listed immunizations on the Health Information Form and they are noted in the vaccination record, they may be deleted from the Health Information Form. Parents and guardians are not able to enter vaccinations in Skyward. The Health Services staff pulls that information from the forms. However, those reports list all immunizations ever recorded so it is helpful to have only new information provided each year.

Information is a key component in providing quality health care to your student. Help the Health Services staff by providing a full and accurate picture of your student’s health needs. Please contact the staff at any time during the school year with any new developments in your student’s health status or with questions or concerns. ~WHS Health Department

Wayzata Public Schools Legislative Action Committee (LAC) Update At the April 8, 2015 LAC meeting, Mary Cecconi and Ann Hobbie of Parents United for Public Schools gave an update to the committee on current legislative proposals at the State Capitol. Both of the current Senate and House Education Funding bills propose a 1% or less increase in the per-pupil general education funding formula for the next biennium, which will result in funding cuts to public schools. A 1% increase on the general education formula would create a shortfall of $3.2 million for Wayzata public schools, which would equal cuts of 15 FTE teachers in the 2015/16 school year and 45 FTE teachers in the 2016/17 school year, according to Jim Westrum, the district’s Executive Director of Business and Finance. The Wayzata LAC 2015 Legislative Platform advocates for at least a 4% increase in the general education formula for the next biennium.

Take Action. The LAC is hoping that parents and community members will take a moment to contact their legislators and the Governor to urge them to support public education. Sharing your thoughts with a legislator by a phone call, email, letter or in person is a great way to connect. The next LAC meeting will be held May 13, 2015 from 7:45 to 9:00 a.m. in the District Administration Building boardroom.

SPRING EMPTY BOWLS EVENT ON MAY 14

The annual major fundraising event for IOCP, Empty Bowls, will take place at WHS on Thursday, May 14 from 5:00 –7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. This community service event is a concerted effort between current pottery students, alumni, art faculty, Club Y.E.S. students and many others. Tickets will be sold at the door with no pre-event sales. Patrons may make purchases via cash/check or credit card for both tickets and the pottery sale. Around WHS TROJAN PRIDE

The Character Card winner for April 7 was in memory of Sky Finklea (10). Sky passed away unexpectedly over spring break from complications of the stomach flu. Sky personified the Pillar of Building and Sustaining Positive Relationships. If you didn’t know Sky personally, you may recall her fabulous personality and sense of humor.

She was a true presence in our school , smiling and sharing pleasant greetings with classmates and staff. ​ This continues to be an incredibly difficult time for Sky’s family and for those who knew her. Please keep all of them in your thoughts.

April 2015 Trojan Pride has been developed to intentionally and purposefully promote and develop character and leadership qualities in our students.

Teachers look for students who demonstrate one of the Pillars of Trojan Pride during the school day and send a Trojan Pride Character Card home. Each Tuesday we draw a student to showcase Trojan Pride on Newsbreak.

Athletics 2015-2016 WHS ATHLETIC REGISTRATION INFORMATION

All participants in athletic programs at Wayzata High School must be fully registered prior to the athlete’s first practice/tryout. The Activities/Athletic Dept. will temporarily be located to Central Middle School from June 15 – August 3. Athletic Registration hours will be Monday - Wednesday 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Due to construction, we strongly recommend registering online.

Please note, student-athletes may participate in only one athletic program per season.

A student-athlete who has transferred to WHS during their high school career, is moving into the school district or is a foreign exchange student should register in-person accompanied by a parent/guardian.

You must complete the following steps to be cleared for participation:

Step 1: Submit a current Sports Qualifying Physical Examination dated after 6/15/2013. Form must be signed and dated by a physician. Well-child physicals will not be accepted. Form must clear student for athletic participation. Sports Qualifying Physical Exam can be faxed (763-745-6625 ) or dropped off at CMS (summer 2015 only).

Step 2: Submit the 2015-2016 Minnesota State High School League/Wayzata High School Athletic and Activities Eligibility Form. This form must be turned in each school year. Submit form at www.wayzataschoolspayonline.com. Paper copies will be available mid-June at Central Middle School or online.

Step 3: Fee Payment. Submit payment at E-Pay or www.wayzataschoolspayonline.com. If you are paying in person, you must pay with check or cash.

If these three steps are not completed, your student will not be allowed to participate, tryout and/or receive any equipment. Please complete steps in order.

Fine Arts DRAMA CLUB NEWS:

We had a great run in April for “I Love A Piano,” our spring Musical Revue. Over 60 students made up the cast and crew of this Irving Berlin show.

We h o s te d a l m o s t 4 0 0 s e n i o r c i t i z e n s on April 23 for our SENIOR BUCK NIGHT. They loved the old time songs!!!!

I truly believe our young students will now know and love the classic music by this amazing song writer. Thanks to Adam Hegg and Melissa O’Neill for bringing this wonderful musical to us. Thanks to Cathy Wind, our outstanding choreographer, along with Martha Mathewson, our Orchestra Director and Pianist helped make this show a huge success.

Senior Spotlight is taking place Thursday, April 30 and Friday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m., in our Black Box Theatre. Tickets will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to each performance. $5 for students and $10 for adults. Seating is limited to 85 seats.

The COFFEE HOUSE cast is set and the show will take place on Friday, May 22 on the main stage at WHS. Technology ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS All seniors are expected to return their school issued technology

items on Wednesday, May 27 during Block 4. These iPads will be re-issued to students next fall. Therefore it is critical that all iPads are returned. Consequences for not returning an iPad may include: no yearbook will be issued to the student, WHS diplomas will be held until the iPad is returned or a replacement is purchased.

Technology Attention All Parents!

PLEASE take advantage of summer break to repair your student’s iPad!

If your student’s iPad is in need of repair please follow the necessary steps to repair the iPad during summer break.

File an Insurance Claim:

1. Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox or Explorer- please do not use Safari) and go to www.wayzata.k12.mn.us/wps.

2. Click on the Academics menu and choose My Way iPads.

3. Click on iPad Care and Maintenance and choose Report a Damaged iPad.

4. Choose your insurance provider – If you do not know which insurance you purchased please call 763-745-5104 and Donna Peterson can assist you.

5. Make sure you check the” I’m not a robot” square and click “Submit Claim Form” at the bottom of the page.

6. GoCare claims require a $25 deductible – you will receive an email from GoCare notifying you to pay. Please send your $25 with your student when they turn in their iPad OR call GoCare with credit card information. If this is not done (WHS) cannot collect the iPad and send out for repair.
