5 STEPS To Help Start Your Kid Business If your kid is enthusiastic about starting a particular business, you should help them as long as they follow all the steps involved in the legal process and work hard to make it successful. 1. Decide The Type Of Business All businesses will teach your child about money management and improve their people skills. However, your kid will have a great time and be an enthusiastic participant if they enjoy what they do. If your kid is interested in art, help them set up a small business selling prints or art pieces on websites like Etsy or even Instagram. A home baking endeavor might be just the idea if they enjoy baking. If they get along well with younger kids, help them publicize their babysitting business. 1. Find Out The Requirements For The Business Each business has unique requirements. For example, a baking business might require your kitchen and baking supplies to fulfill certain requirements before starting your business which you can find out from the city or county officials. You also need to have permits and licenses for all businesses, even those involving lemonade stands and lawn mowing. A teenager wishing to start a babysitting business might need to take a CPR course and the owner of a tutoring business might need to show great scores in those subjects. 1. Help Them Make A Plan The next step is helping your kid flesh out their goals for the business and how they will achieve them. This plan should include marketing, finances, transport, and even filing tax returns. If you’re funding the project, or your kid has some savings set aside, you’ll need to make sure that the business they’re about to start can take off with that investment. You should also help them set a reasonable timeline and make sure they stick to it. 1. Fulfill The Extra Legal Requirements If you think your child’s business might put your family’s finances at risk, you might need to purchase an LLC for them. This step comes in handy when your child is involved in a situation that might make you vulnerable to a lawsuit, such as babysitting or selling food items. In addition, if they earn more than $400 from their business, they’ll also need to pay tax on that income, even if it’s a home business. Make sure they set aside a certain percentage of their earnings for this purpose. 1. Help Them Work On Their Marketing Advertising is the most important part of any business, whether small or big. Help your child print out pamphlets or cards advertising their business and help them develop their business’s online presence. Also, coach them on how best to approach potential clients and deal with them, deal with a stressful situation, and develop the kind of customer service skills that make a business successful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what sets you apart? I’m Zhanyia McCullough, 15-year-old CEO and Beauty Formulator at Islande’ Beauty. My natural hair products are known for getting girls and women to fall in love with their curls, kinks, and coils by making their hair softer, healthier, and easier to manage. What sets me apart is that I am really passionate about creating products with “ good “ ingredients. The science of the products I create is very important to me. What inspired you to start a business at such a young age? The inspiration for this hair growth oil came when my hair wasn't growing at the rate I was comfortable with. Knowing how hair is deeply rooted in identity and self-esteem, I created Islande’ Beauty to show girls and women the natural beauty of their hair so they can reclaim their power. I started my business at a young age because I knew that if I was having this issue that there may be others girls who are too. And sometimes kids can receive a message better when it is coming from someone their age.

Zhanyia

What 3 things does anyone starting in your industry need to know? What's next for you? Three things that you need to know when starting in the beauty industry. Research- You must know what part of the beauty industry you want to be in. Research to see what is missing or what can be done in a different way. Why- You must have a why that is bigger than you. Being in the beauty industry is much more than creating products., why do you want to create the product. How do you want your customers to feel when they use your products.Team- You can not do this by yourself. Next for me is the attend Cosmetology school this fall to obtain my license. I not only want to create products, I also want to be a hairstylist.

Starting A Business As A Teen

2

1

What made you want to start a business at such a young age? I unconsciously have always been surrounded by business since I was a little girl, my parents had their healthcare business and I would always be at their office. Almost every summer I would go to business summer camps and I was so engaged and interested in the world of business. But after I spent time at business camp at Howard University my entrepreneurial wheels started turning.

Who influenced you to start your business? My parents, I thank God for them. They saw the potential in me from the beginning and I didn’t see it in myself at the time. They definitely pushed me and still push me to be great and not let doubt or fear take advantage of my potential.

HOBBIES: TRAVELING, SNUGGLING W/PET YOOKIE, VINTAGE SHOPPING AND CREATING NEW DESIGNS

What has been your most memorable moment since starting your business? My most memorable moment since starting my business has been my first fashion show. It was an amazing opportunity to gain more exposure for my brand. I was able to share that moment with some of my close friends, who were my models. After attending a few fashion shows prior to being in one, I was always so engaged and got some inspiration for pieces I thought about making my own. It was so cool to see the process and behind the scenes and have insight on what goes on for the designers and the models. It makes me appreciate everything so much more!

4

What keeps you going when things get tough in your business? The passion is what keeps me going, I love what I do and I understand that it’s a process and it takes time to grow. Even if I’m not packing orders and driving over to the post office to drop things off, I still continue to post on social media and promote my brand and reach my audience. I embrace all of the baby steps and moments where I am learning and developing my brand.

What are your future plans? Maintaining 3.9 gpa college Continuous growth and seeking more opportunities to expand my business.

ANTI-BULLYING BUSINESS

JAMES COLLIER III

My name is A'mani Mondy. I'm 10 years old and I love basketball. With the help of my wonderful parents, I was able to start my very own Apparel company; Basketball Master Apparel (BMA), which I specialize in creating apparel that encourages youth athletes ages 8 to 18 and adults to keep striving towards their dreams, and fulfilling them. Basketball Master Apparel name speaks for what I stand for. I started playing basketball at the age of 6. I did not know how to dribble or shoot a basketball. Despite my challenges, I kept practicing until I became better. Now, I can dribble with two balls as well as shoot jump shots. I Mastered it. When you are wearing my apparel it is my wish that you and others around you become inspired. You too can master the skills in your favorite sport or do anything you dream of doing. However, the most important thing is to stay motivated, shoot for the stars and "Never Give Up." Making Your Dream A Reality, is only the beginning.

She is a true role model for kids everywhere and plans to inspire others through her platform and collaborating with others.

What made you start a business at such a young age? I am a firm believer that kids can do anything we put our minds too even if others tell us "this space is not meant for you." However, I know that is not the reality for many kids, that's why I founded a company called Beyond What You See and my mission is to help every kid embrace their perfect imperfections by overcoming the obstacles that hold them back and pushing past their fears.

What does a typical day in your week look like? A typical day for me starts with a 7 hour school day, then after school usually, I spend some time talking to friends on my ipod. Dinner with my family then homework. Then always before bed my mom and I check my website for any book or t-shirt orders. When things get tough in my business, my mom motivates me to keep pushing and learning new things. Sometimes I like to do just the fun parts but my mom always reminds that business is the behind the scenes as much as it on stage. What advice can you give to someone who's wanting to give up? My advice for anyone that wants to give up on their business is for them to remember their WHY and let that fuel them to their next stop. I am so excited about 2022 and the things I plan to accomplish. My two my exciting "next" are the release of my new book Road To The Crown Volume II and my next Self Esteem Fashion Show!

I decided to write this book to encourage and help young men and woman to develop and increase their self esteem. Before I became a nurse, I was a high school teacher. I loved to talk with the students about life lessons. As a teacher, I was also a single parent but that was not the type of role model I wanted to emulate to the students. Being a single parent seems to be the norm especially with the influences of social media. The inspiration behind the title stems from the hurt, unnecessary stress and struggles I encountered as a single parent. If I would've stayed on my birth control and loved myself more, challenges would have been fewer. Please don't equate sex with love or love with babies. True love equals true love. Choose self first.
