Heritage learners are students with a personal, cultural, or familial connection to a language. They may have grown up hearing the language at home or in their communities, but they are still developing confidence and proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing it.
Wayside supports these learners by offering instructional content that honors their unique backgrounds and builds on the knowledge they already bring to the classroom. Through differentiated activities, culturally relevant themes, and targeted opportunities to strengthen skills in real-world communication, Wayside’s programs help heritage learners deepen their connection to the target language and progress toward proficiency.

—E. Angelini, Ph.D, French Teacher, New-York
At Wayside, we know that the key to learning a language isn’t just practice—it’s understanding. That’s why our Comprehensible Input (CI) products are designed to immerse students in meaningful, understandable language right from the start.
I love your readers. My students felt like they could read French after just 20 days!
—M. McHugh, French Teacher, New Jersey
We combine the best of CI techniques with stories that keep students engaged. Our readers are crafted to give learners the input they need—language that’s just a little bit challenging but always understandable. The result? Students aren’t just memorizing; they’re acquiring language naturally.
We focus on giving students lots of quality input before asking them to produce language. It’s like filling a toolbox with all the right tools before expecting students to build something. With Wayside, learners absorb the language and can confidently start using it when they’re ready.
Our readers aren’t just entertaining—they’re backed by expert language educators like Kristy Placido, who knows exactly how to combine great stories with language-building strategies. That’s why teachers trust us, and students can’t put our books down!
Choosing Wayside means giving students a language-learning experience that works. We prioritize real comprehension and progress over rote memorization. Going with another company that doesn't offer this focus on input would be a step backward for your students' language growth.
Created by award-winning Spanish educators who understand the classroom, Érase una vez is the first and only language program that features Comprehension-Based Readers. Perfect for middle school and high school students (Levels 1–4), it immerses learners in engaging, culturally rich stories that build fluency and confidence.
Can be used with your existing Spanish curriculum!

At Wayside Publishing®, our expert team understands proven teaching methods and helps refine them. We support educators in using ESSA Tier 4 documents to implement evidence-based practices. Our logic model is used for efficacy reviews, ensuring that our materials meet the necessary criteria to be effective.
To achieve the goal of student proficiency, Wayside uses backward design. We start by defining what students should know and be able to do. Then, we develop assessments in all three modes of communication and create lessons and activities to support student learning.
With Wayside, students experience a uniquely intercultural classroom. Our programs foster connections to local, national, and international cultures. They promote exploration of personal and community identities and broaden understanding of other cultures as different rather than foreign.
Wayside recognizes that students learn at varied levels, which is why we provide a differentiated instructional approach. With activities in Learning Site®’s Instructional Strategies Toolkit and formative assessments in each unit, educators can customize the learning experience to meet individual needs.
Our Comprehension-Based Readers™ engage learners and facilitate language acquisition through compelling, comprehensible stories. Designed to build fluency through comprehensible input, the stories use a manageable amount of vocabulary and many cognates. Activities on our Learning Site® align to ACTFL proficiency guidelines.
Wayside's product development team utilizes proven research that meets the evidence standards defined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Our logic model details the methodology behind Wayside's products and visualizes how we use research to achieve desired learning outcomes.
The Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University has conducted a third-party review of our materials and certified that Wayside Publishing products meet ESSA Tier 4 evidence standards. This empirically demonstrates that our products are effective for language learning and delivering measurable outcomes for students.
As of January 2025, Wayside achieved SOC 2, Type II compliance following an audit by Prescient Assurance, confirming that our customer data security meets industry-standard practices.
Wayside is proud to be a member of the EdSafeAI Industry Council, contributing to the responsible advancement of AI in education and championing its safe, effective use in world language learning.

Teaching for proficiency focuses on using the target language in realworld contexts. It’s a shift away from learning grammar for grammar’s sake. Communicating with authentic language helps students see that learning a language develops valuable skills that they can use beyond the classroom.
Grammar & vocabulary in context:
Teaching for proficiency encourages educators to teach grammar and vocabulary in context and not in isolation. Teaching grammar and vocabulary this way helps students see the language as a form of communication, not just a list of rules or words to memorize.
3
Authentic resources allow students to use language the way it is naturally spoken outside of the classroom. These activities help learners use language as a vehicle to share and gain knowledge, whether they are communicating in the interpretive, interpersonal, or presentational mode.
4
Essential Questions and unit goals, Can-Do Statements, and rubrics help demystify students’ goals and help learners self-reflect on their progress. Rubrics let students see what is appropriate for their proficiency level so they can start stretching themselves to reach the next level.
5
Engaging activities and tasks using authentic resources at the right proficiency level encourage students to want to use the target language. Once students get a taste of being able to successfully understand and be understood in another language, it will motivate them to keep learning.

Additional activities to practice vocabulary and grammar from each unit. Available in print and on Learning Site®
From Beethoven to hip-hop and from nation-building to immigration, dive in and examine the rich history and multicultural society of presentday Germany. Neue Blickwinkel engages learners with high-interest topics such as clean sources of energy, hip-hop as social criticism, and how emigration and immigration shape national identities. Build on these exciting discussions using the online Classroom Forum and assignment options for resources and tasks!
Choose from a variety of interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational activities to address the areas where your students need to develop the most. We designed Neue Blickwinkel to allow you to customize unit selections around your class. The diverse range of standards-based activities and authentic resources challenge your students to develop communicative competence while preparing for the AP® German Language and Culture exam.
Each Sprachfundament contains a review of language structures that are used frequently to discuss the chapter theme. Contextualized exercises help students practice the structures while learning about culture.
Learners get an insight into life in present-day Germany through authentic print, audio, and video, including news articles and broadcasts.
A favorite feature of Neue Blickwinkel is the integration of classic German cinema that connects to unit themes, with discussion guides in the Learning Site® and print textbook.

Student-friendly grammar explanations with practical examples introduce language structures in context.
With a focus on communication, Chiarissimo Due further develops students’ abilities to ask and answer questions and to exchange opinions and ideas on a diversity of topics using a variety of different tenses.
Students achieve targeted learning objectives through language basics and thematic vocabulary. Scandite Muros readies students to scale the ever-intimidating “wall of Latin.” Use the classroom-tested strategies to incorporate regular sight reading into your Pre-AP®, AP®, and advanced Latin classes.
From verb endings to participles to subjunctives, each chapter takes on the toughest elements of Latin and makes them accessible and compelling to every student through effective learning strategies, AP®style multiple choice questions, and passage-specific vocabulary lists.
Designed to incorporate online and in-class learning, class time is spent on initial translations as learners practice identifying genre, lyric meters, prose types, and language patterns. Learners apply what they have learned to sight reading independently, so that class discussion and assessment cements the skills and confidence they will need for the exam, college, or law school.
Sight readings included in the text are broken down into manageable sections designed to accompany required AP® selections of Vergil and Caesar.

Correlations to AP® themes support planning and reporting. Authors are experienced College Board teachers, presenters, and consultants whose insights support new and experienced AP® educators in nurturing language proficiency, interculturality, and AP® skills.
Tasks structured to mimic the AP® exam build confidence for exam day. AP® tasks are unitembedded, communicative and thematic, so that prep contributes to unit language and culture objectives.
My relationship with Wayside has been one of the highlights of my teaching career. One year I helped 40 students pass the AP® exam with 5s and 4s. Great service and great books. Thank you.
—A. Ruggles, World Languages Educator, Las Vegas, NV
Correlations to IB themes support planning and reporting. IB themes and goals are intertwined naturally into units. Opportunities for reflection encourage self-management skills, metacognition, conceptual understandings, and interculturality.
Assessment mirrors instruction. Along the pathway to proficiency, students acquire language through performance-based real-world tasks that are carefully sequenced and rooted in the five prescribed themes.
With units built around rich cultural topics and compelling Essential Questions, EntreCulturas and EntreCultures are the perfect fit for our IB Middle Years Programme.
