PHILANTHROPY AT WAYNFLETE A Community Partnership 2022–2023

WELCOME

This school year we celebrate Waynflete’s 125th anniversary. It is impossible to mark such an occasion without thinking of the many people before us who made this milestone possible through their volunteerism, philanthropy, teaching, advocacy, and commitment to independent education.

All of us benefit from their legacy, and those here today who actively support Waynflete ensure the current and future health of our school.

The following pages recognize the over 1,000 donors and volunteers who made Waynflete a priority in our 2022–2023 year. Just under $2 million in donations were given for unrestricted operating funds, restricted giving for designated operations and tuition assistance, and gifts for previous capital improvement efforts such as our Fore River turf field and our crew boathouse. Waynflete would not be the school it is without this critical support.

We could not be more grateful for the generosity of our community.

DIRECT AND CRITICAL IMPACT

Annual Giving

The Waynflete Fund is the foundation of our fundraising efforts. For a mission-driven institution like Waynflete, annual gifts provide opportunities for students beyond what is possible with tuition alone.

Fueling Our Mission

Waynflete’s mission drives everything that we do. It is what makes a Waynflete education exceptional. For-profit businesses cut costs through consolidation and streamlining. To employ these strategies at a mission-driven school like Waynflete would diminish our ability to provide the individual attention and quality of education that everyone expects for a Waynflete student.

Making a Waynflete education affordable for as many families as possible is a key tenet of the school’s philosophy. Without philanthropic support, the increase in tuition rates to fully fund our current program would decrease accessibility, enrollment, and the number of programs we could continue to offer.

Increasing Opportunities

Every dollar contributed to The Waynflete Fund helps ensure that:

• our students have increased opportunities in the sciences, the arts, athletics, outdoor education, and service learning.

• the school has a robust financial aid budget to enroll qualified students.

• we provide our faculty with more competitive salaries and the professional development and classroom resources they need.

Demonstrating Confidence

We ask everyone to consider a donation at a level that feels personally significant and meaningful. Participation demonstrates confidence in our mission and helps us secure funding from other sources, such as foundations.

A FRESH LOOK

AT OUR CAMPUS

Waynflete periodically reviews our campus facilities and updates our framework for strategic improvements to meet program, student, and faculty needs. The new campus framework, completed in winter 2022–23 by Scott Simons Architects, accounts for the age and wear of existing facilities; changes in programs and faculty; and our obligation to provide a campus optimized for accessibility, functionality, sustainability, and efficiency, as well as aesthetics, security, and well-being.

As we begin conversations with members of Waynflete’s community around recommended additions and improvements, we invite you to reach out for more information. Contact Director of Development and Community Engagement Kelsey Robinov at krobinov@waynflete.org with questions or to get involved as we work to make this vision a reality for our students.

Capital Giving ADVANCE TRANSFORMATIVE GOALS

Like all independent schools, Waynflete periodically embarks on multiyear capital fundraising campaigns or major gift initiatives. These efforts generate a capital sum rather than revenue for the school, typically for facilities and endowment growth.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGNS are transformative, advancing goals set in the board of trustees’ strategic plan—the culmination of a thorough examination of the school’s strengths, accomplishments, challenges, and resources.

Recent capital fundraising efforts reflect the careful stewardship and vision of Waynflete leadership and the generosity of its community.

With a new home for the crew program, Waynflete can finally protect its costly shells, oars, and tools from theft and sun, wind, snow, and ice damage.

WAYNFLETE’S COMMUNITY ROWING

program began in 2005 with a handful of students, a single erg, and a worn-out boat. Today’s program comprises almost 60 rowers and coxswains, five coaches, 22 boats, four safety launches, and a dock. Roughly one-third of participating students come from other schools.

Until a few years ago, the greatest obstacle facing our rowing program was its launch location on the Fore River mud flats, which are tidal and therefore only accessible at high tide. Crews had no regular practice schedule, and their valuable time on the water was frequently curtailed during the season.

Longtime rower and Waynflete supporter Phineas Sprague generously provided a long-term lease that allowed us to move

the program to a deep water location near the Casco Bay Bridge. Last spring we commemorated the opening of the new Sprague Rowing and Education Center and CC Stockly Boathouse with a ribboncutting ceremony held during Reunion Weekend. With a new home for the crew program, Waynflete can finally protect its costly shells, oars, and tools from theft and sun, wind, snow, and ice damage. The facility will nurture student athletes, enhance the crew program, and provide access for marine biology studies and other educational opportunities for all Waynflete students.

A New Lower Playground Reaches New Heights

WITH THE RECENT INSTALLATION of a water feature and a loose parts area, Waynflete’s lower playground is now complete.

The new playground encourages children to create their own forms of adventure in the nooks and crannies they discover— all while moving in and out of different social groups and practicing the values of cooperation and collaboration. By “cooking” with pots and pans, using PVC pipes to make elevated rivers, and engaging with stumps, logs, buckets, and sand in the imaginative spaces of a mud kitchen, ice cream parlor, or auto repair shop, students are exploring engineering along with other activities that reinforce the observation and experimentation that take place inside the science classroom.

Today, the lower playground is a destination for families from across the West End.

The key to the playground’s popularity? Children played an essential role in its design. Students used the design thinking process to provide input on the site’s essential ingredients, including monkey

bars, swings, spinners, a tree house, a hand pump, and “something that would allow us to climb high.” They wanted as many components as possible to be fabricated from recycled materials. All these elements were incorporated into the final plans. “We gave it all to them, and that’s why they love it,” says Lower School Director Anne Hopkins.

Today, the lower playground is a destination for families from across Portland’s West End. For the clearest demonstration of its popularity, visit the Lower School at dismissal time and watch dozens of children and their parents stream down to the playground for even more fun at the end of the school day.

Children used the design thinking process to provide input on the site’s essential ingredients, including monkey bars, swings, spinners, a tree house, a hand pump, and “something that would allow us to climb high.”

“When we look at science as a general field today, women aren’t at a disadvantage. But when it comes to polar science, there is still a huge discrepancy.”

POLAR SCIENCE IS ESSENTIAL in the fight against global warming—an endeavor in which University of Maine researchers are deeply involved. Funded by a National Science Foundation grant, the university runs an intensive at the Juneau Ice Fields in Alaska preparing students to conduct polar research. Last year, a portion of the program was opened to university professors and high school science teachers, including Waynflete’s own Stephanie Dolan.

After returning from Alaska, Stephanie turned her thoughts to her middle school students—her female students in particular. “When we look at science as a general field today, the representation and recognition of women is improving,” she says. “But when it comes to polar science, there is still a huge discrepancy.” With support from Batelle, a nonprofit research institution, Stephanie created WISP—the Waynflete Winter Ice and Snow Program—to expose students to winter STEM in Maine and increase awareness of the changing climate.

The centerpiece of the program was a fourday citizen snow data collection excursion in New Hampshire’s White Mountains last March. Eighth-grade participants took an avalanche and backcountry safety course, learning how to pack efficiently, measure snow levels, read maps, and use emergency transponders. The training quickly became relevant. “We were hit with a massive snow- and windstorm,” Stephanie recalls, “with whiteout conditions and massive snowdrifts.” The experience illustrated how unpredictable weather can interfere with research. “You have to be adaptable and prepared to shift course,” she says. “So much effort is just getting to where you need to be.”

WISP turned out to be more than a winter science trip. “Few of these kids had ever ventured into the mountains, and none had trekked during the winter,” reflects teacher Kate Ziminsky. “They supported and encouraged one another and rose to every challenge, pushing past individual discomfort to reach our destination. They returned home visibly changed—with lasting connections with classmates, walking taller with confidence in their new abilities.”

Making Moves at Model UN

“Going through the practice of cooperating with people of differing opinions is invaluable and can be applied in just about any walk of life.”
— Wyatt Adams ’24, Waynflete Team Captain

FOLLOWING THE DISRUPTION of the pandemic years, Waynflete’s Debate, Speech, and Model UN Team has roared back under the leadership of Upper School English teacher Sarah Getchell, whose experience includes leading Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols students to victory at the International Independent School Public Speaking Championship.

Model UN conferences are distinctly different from conventional debate tournaments, where students compete against other teams in high-pressure rounds to receive scores. Students representing countries in Model UN have weeks to conduct in-depth research, determine their nation’s stance on specific issues, and gauge the strength of potential alliances. Students typically take on the name of their country during the event. (Representing Bangladesh? You’ll be known as “Bangladesh” for the duration.) Larger multiday events are attended by students from around the world, providing rich networking and socializing opportunities.

Country representatives immerse themselves in their roles, making statements on issues, drafting working papers, proposing legislation, and coordinating efforts with allies behind

the scenes. “They come back from their committee rooms so full of energy and excitement,” says Sarah. It’s in a student’s best interest to be well versed in current events. “You can’t just prepare the night before and expect to do well,” she says. “If you’re new to Model UN, you quickly learn what it takes to succeed.” Top delegates draw others together, playing essential roles in formulating working papers and speaking up in committees.

“Considering all the rising tensions and lack of international cooperation, now is the perfect time for more young students to try out Model UN,” says captain Wyatt Adams ’24. “Not everyone who attends a conference will become a diplomat. But going through the practice of cooperating with people of differing opinions is invaluable and can be applied in just about any walk of life.”

Waynflete’s Debate, Speech, and Model UN Team is supported in part by The Karen Whitney Fund for Modern US History, Government, and Current Affairs.

Waynflete Athletes

Turf It Out— and Triumph

The installation of artificial turf on Hall Field has transformed Waynflete’s athletic program.

FOR MOST OF WAYNFLETE’S HISTORY,

student athletes practiced and competed in a hodgepodge of locations ranging from the Spring Street campus’s lower field to a pasture in Cape Elizabeth. Change came in the late 1980s with the acquisition of the Fore River Campus and its two full-sized grass fields.

Those fields quickly proved to be a maintenance challenge for the school’s groundskeepers, however. Due to poor drainage, Hall Field was unplayable for weeks in the spring. Teams practiced in parking lots or at the Portland Sports Complex, resulting in thousands of dollars in facility rental fees and transportation.

Athletic Director Ross Burdick frequently canceled or postponed games due to inclement weather. “There were times when I would have to tell coaches, ‘you can only run drills in the front corner behind the field house,’” he recalls.

Waynflete also spent tens of thousands of dollars re-sodding fields damaged during the lacrosse season and by skunks rooting for grubs, negatively affecting summer camp programs.

The installation of artificial turf on Hall Field has transformed Waynflete’s athletic program. Our athletes play on the turf surfaces they will compete on during regional and state championships. Multiseason varsity player Tilsley Kelly ’24 observes that lacrosse ground balls are different on turf, and that field hockey is a faster game due to the flat surface and lack of divots. “Now, when other teams come to us, we have an advantage,” Tilsley says.

Waynflete is now producing new revenue through the rental of Hall Field to other sports programs and generating goodwill with other schools in the region by making our turf field available when local grass fields are unplayable. “We used to rely on other schools for this. Now we can return the favor,” says Ross.

Tilsey provides perhaps the most evocative illustration of the possibilities opened up by the new Hall Field turf: “This year, we shoveled snow off in early March to get a jump on the season!”

PLANNED GIVING

Friends of Waynflete who make provisions for the school in their estate plans are recognized as members of the Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle.

IN 1986, RUTH COOK HYDE, Class of 1910, made one of the first bequests to Waynflete when she left her home to the school. Her former home, where she lived while she was a student at Waynflete, is now Cook Hyde House—one of the Middle School buildings.

The Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle was formed in 2003 to honor Ms. Hyde’s generosity and lasting gift, and to acknowledge others who make provisions for Waynflete in their own estate plans. Over the years, Waynflete has received a number of planned gifts from alumni, friends, and other members of the community. We would like to express our deep gratitude to all who are making a planned gift to the school.

Using tax-savvy giving methods benefits both donors and the school, and there are many ways to make a meaningful philanthropic impact on Waynflete students and faculty. We are happy to work with you to create a legacy giving plan that works for your family.

The Waynflete endowment provides a steady source of income that reduces our reliance on tuition, helps ensure financial stability, and advances our mission for many years to come.

Endowment income helps offset annual expenses, either for the general operating budget (including financial aid and faculty enrichment) or for donor-designated programs. Many of Waynflete’s named endowments receive ongoing support from our community. We remain grateful to those generous donors who have recognized the importance of a robust endowment in strengthening our future.

THE DRAKE AWARD

In 1976, Emerson and Ping Drake, parents of four former Waynflete students, received a special honor for their service to Waynflete. Emerson had served on the board of trustees for 16 years, the last several as president. Ping was active within the Waynflete community, volunteering in many areas of the school. They were recognized by the board with the award that now bears their name. Ping was also made an honorary Waynflete alumna. We honor their example and their memory by awarding the Drake Award each year.

Elizabeth Barrett P’14, ’17 Elizabeth and her family, including children Louis Frumer ’14 and Kelley Frumer ’17, have been part of the Waynflete community since 2007. Elizabeth epitomizes the selfless and generous volunteer who keeps independent schools strong and thriving. During her time as a parent, Elizabeth was involved in every level of the Parents Association (PA). She served as vice president, president, and member-atlarge, was a class parent several times, and chaired the Friends of the Library and the Welcome Committee. She and her husband, John, created the PA Diversity Committee and also served on the Senior Gift Campaign Committee during their children’s respective senior years. The two are also members of the Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle, the planned giving society at Waynflete. Elizabeth volunteered at numerous admission events, accompanying many a division director on their “Discover Waynflete” tours and offering insights to prospective parents. Elizabeth has remained a loyal volunteer and staunch supporter of Waynflete in the years since her children graduated.

She finds energy in all kinds of outdoor recreation, from paddle boarding to skiing to fly-fishing. Cricket lives in Portland with her husband, Angus, and their two children, Emma ’24 and Gus ’26.

James L. Reese is associate dean of students for International Student Programs at Bates College, advising the students on curricular and career progress as well as personal well-being on campus. James was born in Selma, Alabama, and grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina, until age 16, observing and participating in the civil rights drives in the South. He completed high school in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, prior to attending Middlebury College for a degree in American studies. Although his current primary responsibility is advising international students, his work as a dean has encompassed many areas and oversight in student affairs, residence life, and student activities. He also has provided support and mentoring to BIPOC, transfer, and nontraditional students, helping them navigate the challenges of classes, policies, and decisions as well as complexities of diversity, equity, and inclusion. He lives in Lewiston with his wife, Soni, and their two children, Ishan ’24 and Ayanthi ’26.

Class of 2023 Senior Gift

We are so grateful to Waynflete for helping to launch our children, Helen ’21 and Charlie ’23, into the world as bright, curious, and kind young people. While they have different academic interests and different approaches to everything—from politics to socializing—they both love and have loved Waynflete for the ten years we have been involved with the school. As parents, we have often marveled at how one institution has served them both so well. Helen and Charlie have been challenged and supported by the school’s amazing teachers, coaches, and advisors throughout the years. They have learned to think critically, engage in the world around them with compassion, and push themselves to do more than they thought possible, be it auditioning for a competitive singing group or succeeding in Advanced Biology.

Jim and Eileen Hornor, Co-Chairs, Senior Gift Committee Parents of Helen Hornor ’21 and Charlie Hornor ’23

VALUES MISSION

Waynflete’s mission is to engage the imagination and intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance and self-knowledge, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world. Our aim is to provide a program that combines security with challenge, playful exploration with rigorous expectation, and range of experience with depth of inquiry.

Statement of Beliefs

We are devoted to the healthy development of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Believing that young people are naturally curious about the world, we engage our students with a rich variety of academic and cocurricular experiences, allowing them to explore their own interests, talents, and ideas. Learning flourishes when students are challenged to discover, to create, to take intellectual risks, and to invest themselves passionately in areas both familiar and new.

We believe that diversity is one of the conditions of excellence for our school.

We value the individuality of our students, recognizing that each will take a different path through life. We also believe that every person can be a responsible member of the community and that this sense of responsibility deepens when we treat our students and one another with trust and respect. It is out of respect for each individual that true community arises—a community of diverse human beings who value the challenges of honoring differences and resolving conflict. We believe that personal freedom and mutual support should be tightly interwoven, and that working with others is as important as striving to achieve one’s own goals. By making these connections, we create an atmosphere in which self-confidence, resilience, and strong relationships can grow.

We believe that our responsibility as educators is to collaborate with one another, with our students, with their families, and with the wider community as we strive to fulfill the mission of our school.

Statement of Goals

Our goals include a commitment:

to nurture in students a sense of wonder and a lifelong love of learning; to promote an appreciation for the liberal arts and sciences, while teaching skills of quantitative reasoning, critical and reflective thought, and aesthetic understanding; to develop a school community enriched by cross-age connections, interdisciplinary opportunities, and an understanding of the range and richness of human history and culture; to help students adopt healthy values and acquire new skills in an ever-changing world; to encourage students’ individual initiative and active responsibility for their own learning; to guide students to become active participants in the community as well as stewards of the environment;

to be a bias-free community that embraces diversity and fosters a positive identity for all persons; to support students in developing a strong framework for ethical decision-making; and to inspire students to strive for excellence and integrity in all aspects of their lives.

Confronting Racism & Bias: A Commitment to Equity and Justice

Waynflete works to create and sustain an equitable and just environment for all members of our school community. It is school policy not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability.

We believe there is no place for racist or biased language, attitudes, behavior, or actions at Waynflete. Thus, we actively confront any form of racism, racist behavior, or other bias as part of our effort to foster a safe and respectful learning environment.

This commitment permeates all programs, actions, and relationships at Waynflete— curricular and cocurricular, personal, and professional. Waynflete is committed to making it possible for each member of the community to feel valued and to participate in all aspects of school life.
