PHILANTHROPY AT WAYNFLETE A Community Partnership

2021–2022

The beginning of each school year brings with it a feeling of excitement and possibility, and this year is no exception. The following pages demonstrate the ways that philanthropy—in all its forms— takes what is possible and makes it a reality for our students. I am proud to celebrate the generosity of the over 1,100 current parents and grandparents, alumni, former parents, faculty and staff, foundations, businesses, and friends who made the school a priority in their giving last year. Thank you to everyone who donated resources, who volunteered time, and who championed the school in any way. I look forward to what is possible for our students as our community comes together now and in the future.

This past year, as well as raising just under $1 million for immediate programming, we received gifts to the school that supported curricular innovation, faculty professional development, and increased tuition assistance for our families. Donations for capital improvements have also enabled us to install a turf field at our Fore River Campus, refurbish our tennis pavilion dedicated to Coach Jeff Madore, install a new playground for our Lower School, and to begin construction on a crew boathouse to be built at the site of our dock on the Commercial Street Fore River location.

Philanthropy continues to make important advancements possible for our community. On behalf of us all, thank you to those who have invested in our school. We are deeply honored to have received your support.

Thanks to our many generous donors, annual giving to Waynflete yielded $968,865 in the 2021–2022 year.
1
These gifts had an immediate impact on our students and teachers, elevating the learning in our classrooms each and every day.

DIRECT AND CRITICAL IMPACT

Annual Giving

The Waynflete Fund is the foundation of our fundraising efforts.

For a mission-driven institution like Waynflete, annual gifts provide opportunities for students beyond what is possible with tuition alone.

Fueling Our Mission

Waynflete’s mission drives everything that we do. It is what makes a Waynflete education exceptional. For-profit businesses cut costs through consolidation and streamlining. To employ these strategies at a mission-driven school like Waynflete would diminish our ability to provide the individual attention and quality of education that everyone expects for a Waynflete student.

Making a Waynflete education affordable for as many families as possible is a key tenet of the school’s philosophy. Without philanthropic support, the increase in tuition rates to fully fund our current program would decrease accessibility, enrollment, and the number of programs we could continue to offer.

Increasing Opportunities

Every dollar contributed to the Waynflete Fund helps ensure that:

• our students have increased opportunities in the sciences, the arts, athletics, outdoor education, and service learning.

• the school has a robust financial aid budget to enroll qualified students.

• we provide our faculty with more competitive salaries and the professional development and classroom resources that they need.

Demonstrating Confidence

We ask everyone to consider a donation at a level that feels personally significant and meaningful. Participation demonstrates confidence in our mission and helps us secure funding from other sources, such as foundations.

ADVANCE TRANSFORMATIVE GOALS

Capital Giving

Capital campaigns are transformative, advancing goals set in the board of trustees’ strategic plan—the culmination of a thorough examination of the school’s strengths, accomplishments, challenges, and resources.

Recent capital campaigns reflect the careful stewardship and vision of Waynflete leadership and the generosity of its community.

Like all independent schools, Waynflete periodically embarks on multiyear capital fundraising campaigns or major gift initiatives. These efforts generate a capital sum rather than revenue for the school, typically for facilities and endowment growth.

Friends of Waynflete who make provisions for the school in their estate plans are recognized as members of the Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle.

In 1986, Ruth Cook Hyde, Class of 1910, made one of the first bequests to Waynflete when she left her home to the school. Her former home, where she lived while she was a student at Waynflete, is now Cook Hyde House—one of the Middle School buildings.

The Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle was formed in 2003 to honor Ms. Hyde’s generosity and lasting gift, and to acknowledge others who make provisions for Waynflete in their own estate plans. Over the years, Waynflete has received a number of planned gifts from alumni, friends, and other members of the community. We would like to express our deep gratitude to all who are making a planned gift to the school.

Using tax-savvy giving methods benefits both donors and the school, and there are many ways to make a meaningful philanthropic impact on Waynflete students and faculty. We are happy to work with you to create a legacy giving plan that works for your family.

Embodying Dialogue Across Differences

Anne and Dick Jackson

Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1960s and 1970s, Anne and Dick Jackson’s children were immersed in an environment that stressed the twin values of philanthropy and education. Giving back was essential, but more important were the specific causes that the two believed were essential to societal growth. “They gave to a variety of institutions that were a fabric of the community,” recalls son Bill. “There was a sense that, if you have the means, this is just what you do as a citizen in our country.”

Anne’s passion for education-related causes led her to develop deep expertise in independent school board governance. She led workshops across the country, provided consulting services, and served on the boards of Sewickley Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Phillips Academy Andover. Dick Jackons’s philanthropic work focused on what he saw as America’s core principles, including individual freedom, religion, and free markets. He cofounded and was a principal underwriter of the Maine Heritage Policy Center, now the Maine Policy Institute. While Anne didn’t share Dick’s passion for traditional conservative values, they supported each other and respected each other’s beliefs.

“In their own ways, my parents wanted to help make civil society better with their giving,” says Bill.

After sharing time with family for decades at a summer house near Phippsburg, Anne and Dick made Yarmouth their permanent home. Waynflete had the good fortune to attract Anne to its board of trustees in 2006 (granddaughters Chase ’17 and Morgan ’21 were both Waynflete “lifers”). She served as the voice of governance at Waynflete for nine years, guiding three board presidents and two heads of school on best practices.

7
The need to recognize the humanity of others—and to find common ground on which to collaborate for the common good—became more essential than ever.

Through her connection to former Upper School Director Lowell Libby, Anne learned of a new concept that the school was developing: The Can We? Project, one of three ventures that would eventually comprise Third Thought Initiatives for Civic Engagement. Can We? was created in 2018 as an experiment in revitalizing democracy (the initiative received significant support after its inception from a generous E.E. Ford Foundation matching grant). The program aimed to help high school students engage in dialogue across differences, originally taking form as a threeday retreat for students from seven Maine high schools. Working with experienced facilitators, high schoolers learned how to talk across deep divides, question their own ideas, challenge each other, and together develop a shared vision for a better future. Maine Policy Institute staff serve as cofacilitators for in-school retreats.

In the years following the creation of Can We?, the ferocity and frequency of partisan rhetoric continued to ratchet up. Recognizing the humanity of others— and finding common ground on which to collaborate for the common good—became more essential than ever. Planning began for an expanded Can We? program that aimed to eventually help dozens of schools in Maine build their own capacity for dialogue. New funding would be required.

It was here that Anne Jackson’s passion for philanthropy, education, character development, civil dialogue, and civic engagement converged. Anne was particularly interested in helping institutions identify what they did well and getting “it” out there, at scale. Here was an opportunity to support Waynflete’s mission of developing “caring participants in the world” while also offering up meaningful student leadership opportunities. Dick and Anne provided a significant gift that will support the next stage of The Can We? Project.

8
Waynflete is grateful to the Jacksons for helping to fund the next generation of Third Thought Initiatives for Civic Engagement, and for serving as an outstanding example of what “dialogue across differences” can make possible.

Endowment income helps offset annual expenses, either for the general operating budget (including financial aid and faculty enrichment) or for donor-designated programs. Many of Waynflete’s named endowments receive ongoing support from our community. We remain grateful to those generous donors who have recognized the importance of a robust endowment in strengthening our future.

Lower School

Philanthropic giving has helped drive the integration of anti-racist/anti-bias concepts in all four Lower School programs. Grounded in the concept of “backward design”—an approach to curriculum planning that begins with a detailed examination of desired results— faculty members are building expertise in Social Justice Standards and culturally responsive instruction.

This work has been supported by consultants from the organization RISE DEI.

Lower School Director Anne Hopkins says that the results have been “life-changing” for faculty, infusing them with a sense of shared purpose.

“Waynflete’s values truly come alive with this approach,” she says. “By incorporating these

practices in everything we do in the classroom, we’re able to talk about hard things that we might have avoided in the past.”

Faculty members will explore these themes with Lower School parents and guardians at a future evening event.

11

Philanthropic giving helped support a significant transition in the Middle School curriculum—the implementation of thematic studies in all three grades, starting with the 2022–2023 academic year.

Each grade’s theme is designed to awaken students’ imagination, deepen their curiosity about self and community, provide space for reflection and inquiry, and broaden their sense of the world. Thematic studies in the Middle School also serve as a bridge to students transitioning from Lower School, where this pedagogical approach features prominently.

The sixth-grade theme, “Adapt, Survive, Thrive,” is inspired by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Students examine their basic biological, social, and self-fulfillment needs to better understand how they shape the world they live in. In grade 7, students immerse themselves in the theme of “Exploring Home,” deepening their understanding of home and community to learn how to best protect, nurture, and make valuable contributions to the places they live. In their final middle school year, students explore the concept of “Change: Destruction, Transformation, Creation.” Students spend the year studying change in all its forms, with the goal of understanding how this great force can be harnessed to reinvent ourselves and the world around us.

THE KLINGENSTEIN AWARD

Waynflete’s mission calls on us to encourage “responsible and caring participation in the world.” This commitment to service has long been reflected in the lives and accomplishments of our many alumni. In 2019, the Waynflete Board of Trustees created the Klingenstein Award to honor alumni who have had broad and positive impact at local, regional, national, and/or international levels. The Klingenstein Award was named for Patricia Davis Klingenstein ’47 in recognition of her work as an education advocate, devoted community leader, volunteer, and philanthropist.

Waynflete’s mission calls on us to encourage “responsible and caring participation in the world.” This commitment to service has long been reflected in the lives and accomplishments of our many alumni.

Bonnie Docherty ’90 has worked for two decades in the fields of international humanitarian law and disarmament. She is a lawyer, field researcher, and scholar, and has played an active and leading role in campaigns against numerous problematic weapons. Bonnie is a lecturer on law at Harvard Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic and is also a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch. Her on-site investigations of cluster munitions use helped galvanize international opposition to the weapons. Bonnie participated in the negotiations of the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions and played a key role in the negotiations of the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, providing legal advice to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a coalition that received the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Bonnie has investigated the effects of war on civilians in Ethiopia, Gaza, Iraq, Israel, Libya, Nepal, and Ukraine, and has additional expertise in the field of human rights and the environment.

THE DRAKE AWARD

In 1976, Emerson and Ping Drake, parents of four former Waynflete students, received a special honor for their service to Waynflete. Emerson Drake had served on the board of trustees for 16 years, the last several as president. Ping was active within the Waynflete community, volunteering in many areas of the school. They were recognized by the board with the award that now bears their name. Ping was also made an honorary Waynflete alumna. We honor their example and their memory by awarding the Drake Award each year.

Katie Glaser Getchell ’88 has been part of the Waynflete community since 1981. As an alumna, she has been a dedicated and longserving volunteer and a generous supporter of Waynflete’s fundraising efforts. Katie was a member of Waynflete’s board of trustees for six years, chairing the Alumni Leadership Council and serving on the Development Committee, the Global Committee, the Second Century Capital Campaign Leadership Committee, and the Annual Fund Committee. As a challenge donor and an ambassador for the school’s annual fundraiser, Katie has helped inspire alumni to support the Waynflete Fund every year. She supported the school’s fundraising auctions as a regular donor and attendee, and for many years hosted the Boston alumni regional gathering at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Katie continues to be an ambassador for Waynflete, always finding time to welcome young alumni with an interest in art or museums to learn more about her work and to advise them on networking and job searches.

Welcome to the newest members of the board of trustees.

Adam Edwards, originally from southeastern Massachusetts, received his bachelor’s in international relations from Brown University in 2004 and an MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management in 2012. He has worked for companies ranging in size from midstage start-ups to Fortune 100 companies; with a background in finance, he has focused on influencing, communicating, and executing business strategies across multiple industries. As a former college squash player, he also has broad experience supporting multiple urban squash programs for kids in the New York City area. In search of a better quality of life for their growing family, Adam and his wife, Jen, moved to Yarmouth in 2014, having visited Maine just twice previously. Since then, Adam has had the pleasure of working in a finance capacity at two of Maine’s premier large companies— L.L.Bean and IDEXX Laboratories—while also continuing his support of youth squash as a director at Portland Community Squash. Adam and Jen have fallen in love with Maine and are excited to raise Cooper ’31, Harrison ’32, and Maisie ’36 as Mainers.

Giovanna Gray Lockhart has more than 20 years of experience at the intersection of business, politics, media, and gender equity. She runs her own strategic consultancy, advising executive-level clients on philanthropy, advocacy, and communications. Prior to the pandemic, Giovanna held senior roles at venture-backed coworking companies The Wing and The Riveter, where she led strategy, impact, and strategic communications. Giovanna was a fundraiser for both the Dean and Obama presidential campaigns. She served as senior advisor to her mentor, US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and with her support founded the New York Women’s Collective, a political giving group that has contributed over $1,000,000 for Democratic women candidates. She currently serves on the board of directors of the award-winning national non-profit StoryCorps and is an angel investor in several women-founded companies. A New Jersey native, Giovanna attended Princeton Day School as a scholarship student. She is a graduate of Connecticut College, where she was a gender and women’s studies major and the goalie for the Division 3 ice hockey team. She resides on Littlejohn Island with her two children, Beatrice ’33 and Gus ’34.

Margaret (Peg) Smith is a partner at Pierce Atwood in Portland, Maine, with a practice that includes all aspects of real estate law, including commercial and residential conveyancing, leasing, and title review and analysis. She is a graduate of Boston College Law School and holds a BS in nutrition from Penn State University. Peg worked for several years in the field of nutrition prior to attending law school and remains passionate about the connection between food and health. Childhood summers spent hiking and camping in the Canadian woods, in addition to many hours spent reading and writing stories as child, fueled a lifelong commitment to both the outdoors and education, which she has channeled into past board service on behalf of Catherine Morrill Day Nursery, the Maine Advisory Board for the Trust for Public Land, and her current position on the board of directors for The Telling Room. Originally from Pennsylvania, Peg lives in Cumberland with her husband, Brad, an entrepreneur and fundraising consultant, and two daughters, Elle ’27 and Evie ’29. When she’s not at work, Peg can usually be found at Sunday River, on Chebeague Island, in her garden, or on her yoga mat.

We value Waynflete because it afforded our girls the opportunity to learn in an environment of acceptance and trust. The pedagogy is intended to instill self-reliance and independence while fostering a sense of community. While engaging in humanities, STEM, arts, and athletics, students are taught to practice critical thinking, clarity in spoken and written communications, and ethical decision making—all this to the end of becoming an agent for good in the community and in the wider world.

That is why, along with yearly contributions, we have named a bequest to Waynflete in our wills, to ensure that Waynflete will flourish and evolve for generations of families to come.

WHY WE give

TO WAYNFLETE

Our family’s history with Waynflete has evolved over the years. We’ve played the roles of alumni, parent, grandparent, volunteer, and neighbor. One constant has been our desire to support this incredible place that has meant so much to our family and our community for so long. A new chapter of our Waynflete story began in the Fall of 2021 when Caleb started in the Early Childhood program. Since then, our support of Waynflete has transitioned from honoring our history to furthering a bright future for the school. We see the strong foundation of Waynflete’s rich history as it grows and evolves to meet the needs of today’s students. We’ve never been prouder to support Waynflete and to be a part of its history and future.

WHY WE give

TO WAYNFLETE

Waynflete is a special place where individuals develop and thrive as students/academics, leaders, athletes, mentors, and inclusive community members. Our daughter Cece is an excellent example—Waynflete has shaped her as a well-rounded and diverse-minded person. Throughout the eight years that Cece studied at Waynflete, the school nurtured her academic curiosity and strengths; brought out her inner athlete across basketball, soccer, and lacrosse; championed her intense love of science, art, and music, and her ability as a singer; and enabled her to refine her independent thinking and natural leadership qualities. Cece developed lifelong friendships with students, faculty, and administrators, which we are very grateful for. We are deeply proud of the independent thinker and courageous leader that Cece has become, and believe she has been positively shaped by her studies and experiences at Waynflete. As Cece heads off to Bates College, we are confident that she has the academic training, curiosity, and independent thinking abilities critical to continue to be successful at school and in life.

Class of 2022 Senior Gift

Families of seniors find that the Senior Gift is a wonderful way to show gratitude for the lifelong gift of a Waynflete education. The following donors honored the Class of 2022 with a donation to the school.

Anonymous (2)

Alice Barakagwira

Mr. and Mrs. William Biersach

Charlotte Bramley

Craig Bramley and Kimberly Simmons Theodore and Sheila Bukowski

Co-chairing the 2022 Senior Gift Committee brought up a mix of gratitude and nostalgia. Gratitude for a community that places a high value on student-teacher relationships, and nostalgia for what we’ve experienced as parents, alumni, and faculty. Waynflete celebrates and teaches to the unique value in every individual. It’s the secret behind the school’s success. Waynflete teachers look for the light in each student—we saw this with both our children. This is a school that encourages teachers to see students for who they are, and to share with them a path to learning that includes both joy and rigor.

WHY I give

TO WAYNFLETE

Our students build a love of knowledge, compassion, the arts, and athletics that makes them better prepared for success in college, family life, careers, and the greater communities of their country and the world. That’s why I, along with the Transportation team, support future generations by contributing to the annual Waynflete Fund. Go Flyers! We’re cheering you on!

GIFTS IN KIND MAINE BEER COMPANY

Maine Beer Company was founded by Daniel and David Kleban in 2009. The brothers quickly grew the business into one of Maine’s most popular breweries. With a focus on giving back and taking care of the planet, Maine Beer Company commits 1 percent of its sales to Maine-based environmental nonprofits.

After joining the Waynflete community as Early Childhood parents in September 2015, the Kleban family became one of Waynflete’s most gracious providers of gifts in kind. From potlucks, receptions, open houses, and reunions to our annual “Sips & Stars” gathering, the Klebans have never hesitated to respond to our call. MBC also hosts Waynflete’s annual faculty/staff gathering in Freeport, again providing beverages and a wonderful gathering space.

“From day one, my brother and I knew we wanted to be a certain kind of company,” writes David of MBC’s roots. “We wanted to do things right, no matter what. We told ourselves that if we couldn’t do things right, then we wouldn’t do them at all.” Seven years on, as Daniel and Beth’s twins Ollie and Maddy begin their first year in middle school, Maine Beer Company is still “doing right” by Waynflete. Thank you!

VALUES MISSION

Waynflete’s mission is to engage the imagination and intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance and self-knowledge, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world.

Our aim is to provide a program that combines security with challenge, playful exploration with rigorous expectation, and range of experience with depth of inquiry.

Statement of Beliefs

We are devoted to the healthy development of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Believing that young people are naturally curious about the world, we engage our students with a rich variety of academic and cocurricular experiences, allowing them to explore their own interests, talents, and ideas. Learning flourishes when students are challenged to discover, to create, to take intellectual risks, and to invest themselves passionately in areas both familiar and new.

We believe that diversity is one of the conditions of excellence for our school.

We value the individuality of our students, recognizing that each will take a different path through life. We also believe that every person can be a responsible member of the community and that this sense of responsibility deepens when we treat our students and one another with trust and respect. It is out of respect for each individual that true community arises—a community of diverse human beings who value the challenges of honoring differences and resolving conflict. We believe that personal freedom and mutual support should be tightly interwoven, and that working with others is as important as striving to achieve one’s own goals. By making these connections, we create an atmosphere in which self-confidence, resilience, and strong relationships can grow.

We believe that our responsibility as educators is to collaborate with one another, with our students, with their families, and with the wider community as we strive to fulfill the mission of our school.

Statement of Goals

Our goals include a commitment: to nurture in students a sense of wonder and a lifelong love of learning; to promote an appreciation for the liberal arts and sciences, while teaching skills of quantitative reasoning, critical and reflective thought, and aesthetic understanding; to develop a school community enriched by cross-age connections, interdisciplinary opportunities, and an understanding of the range and richness of human history and culture; to help students adopt healthy values and acquire new skills in an ever-changing world; to encourage students’ individual initiative and active responsibility for their own learning; to guide students to become active participants in the community as well as stewards of the environment; to be a bias-free community that embraces diversity and fosters a positive identity for all persons; to support students in developing a strong framework for ethical decision-making; and to inspire students to strive for excellence and integrity in all aspects of their lives.

Confronting Racism & Bias: A Commitment to Equity and Justice

Waynflete works to create and sustain an equitable and just environment for all members of our school community. It is school policy not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability.

We believe there is no place for racist or biased language, attitudes, behavior, or actions at Waynflete. Thus, we actively confront any form of racism, racist behavior, or other bias as part of our effort to foster a safe and respectful learning environment.

This commitment permeates all programs, actions, and relationships at Waynflete— curricular and cocurricular, personal, and professional. Waynflete is committed to making it possible for each member of the community to feel valued and to participate in all aspects of school life.
