The Waynflete Fund
Charitable gifts to the Waynflete Fund are a critical part of the school’s annual operating budget. Income generated by fundraising, revenue from tuition and programs, and distributions from the school’s endowment together support Waynflete’s annual operating budget. Tax-deductible gifts to the Waynflete Fund are put to use immediately and have a direct and critical impact on every student’s experience. Fueling our mission Waynflete’s mission drives everything that we do, and it is what makes a Waynflete education exceptional. A for-profit business can cut costs through consolidation and streamlining. To employ these strategies at a mission-driven school like Waynflete would require reducing the size of our faculty or combining classrooms. This would diminish our ability to provide the individual attention and quality of education that everyone expects for a Waynflete student.
Making a Waynflete education affordable for as many families as possible is also a key tenet of the school’s philosophy. The increase in tuition rates that would be necessary to fully fund our current program would further limit the number of families who could afford to attend. This decrease in enrollment would have a negative effect on the number of programs we could continue to offer. Increasing opportunities Every dollar contributed to the Waynflete Fund helps ensure that our students have increased opportunities in the sciences, the arts, athletics, outdoor education, and service learning; that the school has a robust financial aid budget to enroll qualified students; that our faculty salaries are more competitive; and that our teachers have the professional development opportunities and classroom resources they need.
Waynflete’s annual giving program, the Waynflete Fund, is the foundation of our fundraising efforts. For a mission-driven institution like Waynflete, annual gifts provide opportunities for students beyond what is possible with tuition alone. 6
Demonstrating confidence We ask everyone to consider a donation at a level that feels personally significant and meaningful. Some donors give $25 while others give $25,000. Participation by everyone, at any level, is important. High participation rates demonstrate confidence in our mission and help us secure funding from other sources, like foundations.
Unrestricted Waynflete Fund dollars are critical now more than ever as we remain committed to keeping our students safe, connected, and learning.

Capital Campaigns
Capital campaigns are transformative, advancing goals set in the Board of Trustees’ strategic plan—the culmination of a thorough examination of the school’s strengths, accomplishments, challenges, and resources.
Recent capital campaigns reflect the careful stewardship and vision of Waynflete leadership and the generosity of its community.
Like all independent schools, Waynflete periodically embarks on a multiyear capital fundraising campaign. Campaigns generate a capital sum rather than revenue for the school, typically for facilities and endowment growth.

The Waynflete Endowment provides a steady source of income that reduces our reliance on tuition, helps ensure financial stability, and advances our mission for many years to come. Endowment income contributes to annual expenses, either for the general operating budget (including financial aid and faculty enrichment) or for donor-designated programs.

Legacy Giving
Friends of Waynflete, who make provisions for the school in their estate plans, are recognized as members of the Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle. In 1986, Ruth Cook Hyde, Class of 1910, made one of the first bequests to Waynflete when she left her home to the school. Her former home, where she lived while she was a student at Waynflete, is now Cook Hyde House— one of the Middle School buildings. The Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle was formed in 2003 to honor Ms. Hyde’s generosity and lasting gift, and
to acknowledge others who make provisions for Waynflete in their own estate plans. Over the years, Waynflete has received a number of planned gifts from alumni, friends, and other members of the community. We would like to express our deep gratitude to all who are making a planned gift to the school.

In January 2020, Waynflete received a generous bequest from the estate of Constance Verrill Reich ’43. Constance was born October 4, 1925, in Portland, Maine, and passed away in Rye, New York, on November 3, 2018. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Verrill, Constance attended Waynflete School, Pine Manor College, and the University of Michigan. In 1950, she married Nicholas Davis, who died in the Korean War in 1951. In 1955, she married R. Donald Reich, her husband of 59 years, who predeceased her in February 2014. They raised their family in New York and New Jersey before spending their retirement in Connecticut and on Fire Island. Connie was proud of her Maine heritage and enjoyed spending holidays with her family in Cape Elizabeth. She always spoke fondly of her time at Waynflete and was a stalwart supporter of the Waynflete Fund over many years. Her thoughtful bequest further strengthens the positive impact her support has had on our students and faculty.

Waynflete’s mission calls us to encourage “responsible and caring participation in the world.” This commitment to service has long been reflected in the lives and accomplishments of our many alumni. In 2019, the Waynflete Board of Trustees created the Klingenstein Award to honor alumni who have had broad and positive impact at local, regional, national, and/or international levels. The Klingenstein Award was named for Patricia Davis Klingenstein ’47 in recognition of her work as an education advocate, devoted community leader, volunteer, and philanthropist.
Waynflete’s mission calls us to encourage “responsible and caring participation in the world.” This commitment to service has long been reflected in the lives and accomplishments of our many alumni. Charles Miller ’65 is the recipient of the 2020 Klingenstein Award. In 1991, Charlie formed a nonprofit in Vietnam that led to the systemic improvement of village school buildings, electricity, clean water, kindergartens, deworming programs, scholarships, and water catchment. Another nonprofit he founded built an orphanage in Ethiopia in 2000. Soon after, in Honduras, Charlie played a key role in the building of a new school, a library, a civic center, a coffee and cacao plantation, and wells to irrigate crops. In Maine, Charlie created the Metamorphosis Award, which recognizes young people who have dedicated their lives to serve younger people at risk. He serves on the boards of The Boys and Girls Club, The Portland Public Library, Maine Humanities Council, and Mayo Street Arts, and has tutored at the Telling Room.

T HE D R A KE AWARD In 1976, Dr. and Mrs. Emerson Drake, parents of four Waynflete students, received a special honor for their service to Waynflete. Emerson Drake had served on the Board of Trustees for 16 years (the last several as President), while his wife Ping was equally active within the school community. They were recognized by the Board of Trustees with the award that now bears their name. In presenting the first Drake Award, Board member David Osgood said: “It is our hope that this award will serve not only as a lasting reminder of what the Drakes have done for Waynflete but also as an inspiration to others to do likewise.” Hilary Huber Holm ’82 is the recipient of the 2020 Drake Award. Methodical and thoughtful, Hilary filled a number of roles over her nine years on the school’s Board of Trustees, including Vice President, Treasurer, and member of the committees on Trustees, Development, Employee Policies and Benefits, Evaluation and Compensation, Executive, Finance, Financial Aid, and Strategic Planning. Hilary’s commitment to Waynflete’s mission is evident in her years of volunteer work and her leadership support of the annual fund and capital campaigns. As a member of the Centennial Committee, she helped to plan the yearlong celebration. Hilary was a member of the Alumni Leadership Council and served as alumni class agent and parent agent for the Waynflete Fund. Hilary was always willing to take on any task asked of her. Her gifts of time were even more remarkable considering that she lived over an hour away from the school. We are pleased to honor Hilary’s wisdom, diligence, and leadership, and the many lasting contributions that she has made to Waynflete.

Brandon Cohen ’99 grew up in Falmouth and is a graduate of Wheaton College. He is the President and Owner of Head Light Benefit Group, an employee benefits brokerage and advisory firm. Brandon has advised businesses of all sizes, from local to national brand names, throughout the United States. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Riding To The Top in Windham, an organization dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of children and adults with disabilities through equine activities and therapies. Brandon is one year short of being a “lifer,” having attended Waynflete since first grade. He lives in Cumberland with his wife and two boys. Edward Li grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Princeton Day School in Princeton, NJ. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Master in Public Health from the University of New England. He is currently Director of Health Economics and Outcomes Research at Sandoz. Previously, he spent 15 years working in academia, most recently as a full tenured professor, where he fulfilled various service roles such as Chair of the college faculty assembly and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association. Ed lives in Scarborough with his wife Kin and their twins Kaleb ’28 and Elijah ’28. Colin March grew up in Falmouth, and received his bachelor’s degree from American University in 2003 and a master’s from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in 2005. He is a commercial lender at TD Bank in Portland, where he covers a range of clients, including private schools, nonprofits, manufacturing companies, and real estate investors. He volunteers on several committees with United Way of Greater Portland and is passionate about community service. During the course of his life he has studied, worked, or volunteered in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Italy, Lebanon, and England. Colin and his wife, Roberta, live in Falmouth with their son, Luca ’27, and have a daughter, Isabella, attending college in Texas.

Tuition Assistance Bridge Fund and the Head of School Discretionary Fund In the spring of 2020, when it became clear that the coronavirus would affect the ability of many Waynflete families to re-enroll, the Board of Trustees created the Tuition Assistance Bridge Fund to provide additional reserves of tuition assistance. Our generous community contributed over $200,000 to help 50 families during this difficult time. Many donors also gave to the Head of School Discretionary Fund, allowing Geoff Wagg to apply their gifts where they were needed most as Waynflete began to navigate our new normal— from tuition assistance to personal protection equipment to remote learning technology. Along with the Waynflete Fund, these critical contributions have given our school community a safe and strong start to the 2020–2021 year.

Remote Learning Hubs Waynflete’s Remote Learning Hubs were created to provide a third space— something in between home and school—where students can connect while safely participating in remote learning. All students in grades 7–12 have the opportunity to reserve an individual workstation at one of our Remote Hubs on their off-campus remote learning days. With health and safety protocols as our foundation, students can connect remotely to their campus classes, collaborate with peers, and participate in Middle School Performing Arts. They develop relationships with each other and with our team of Hub Education Mentors, who bring with them experience from some of Maine’s most respected youth development organizations, including Seeds of Peace, Portland Community Squash, Tree Street Youth, and The Telling Room.

Real-Time Remote Learning Waynflete’s technology team has designed a system that brings our real-time classroom experience into the homes of our students, half of whom are learning from home on any given day. The configuration combines the power of Zoom, an iPad, and a device called a Swivl (visit wf-link-org/swivl to watch a video overview featuring several of our teachers). This system creates an immersive environment for those participating in classes remotely. Our faculty has done a tremendous job implementing the technology in their classrooms and adapting their teaching styles.

Class of 1970 Guest Speaker and Visiting Artist Fund One of the things the Class of 1970 remembers from their time at Waynflete is the monthly senior seminar that took place in the Morrill House living room. Guest speakers were invited to present to students on different topics. To honor their 50th reunion, the Class of 1970 raised $10,000 in funds to bring a guest speaker or an artist (or more than one, if possible) to campus for Waynflete students and teachers “to experience the magic of learning from new voices—just as we did all those years ago.” Special thanks to the Class of 1970 for honoring their Waynflete experience by providing opportunities for today’s students.

Gloria Bonnin, longtime Waynflete performing arts faculty, passed away on May 14, 2020. Gloria touched many lives with her talent and spirit, teaching voice, directing plays with her husband, Reggie, in the summer program, and working with faculty on school productions. Her passion for singing, acting, and musical theater was an inspiration to all her students. A colleague wrote, “Gloria put her whole self into every student that she nurtured. She not only helped them vocally, but taught them stage presence, poise, and grace. She was an incredible voice teacher, a dear friend, a colleague, and a wonderful person.”

State ment o f Beliefs We are devoted to the healthy development of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.
