Dear Loyal Friends,
During the 2021-22 fiscal year (July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022), the Wayne Township Education Foundation’s (WTEF’s) board and staff learned to pivot, pivot, and pivot again.
The fiscal year started with high hopes when Covid numbers were down, spurring us to search for venues to hold WTEF’s 30-year anniversary celebration. The goal was to honor school and community leaders who helped others prosper during the ongoing pandemic However, as the summer wore on and Covid numbers climbed, plans for our anniversary were scuttled. Nevertheless, we discovered a west-side treasure, the Global Village Welcome Center. This find gave us ideas for a future multicultural celebration, which you can read about in next year ’ s report.
While WTEF was unable to raise funds via an anniversary celebration, it leveraged a global day of generosity to host its first-ever Giving Tuesday the We Are Wayne Way. This campaign lasted five days and directed donors to give to the foundation or the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township (MSD Wayne) school of their choice. When the dust settled, $15,915 was raised from 548 donors, with most gifts averaging between $5 and $30 Stout Field Elementary hustled hard to engage the most donors, resulting in a $1,000 bonus from WTEF for a total of $4,430.
In 2022, Covid again forced WTEF’s annual Wayne Winter Games into a virtual format, but a partnership with the district’s Wellness Team offered multiple online activities to help the community eat healthier, exercise more, and prioritize mental health. The event culminated with 1-million step challenge. In all, 848 employees and community members participated, blasting past the original goal by posting nearly 7-million steps!
When spring arrived, and Covid persisted, WTEF pivoted again by hosting the Seniors' Choice Recognition and sponsoring the Top 30 Awards via receptions versus banquet-style formats. The new, more inclusive formats allowed the honored educators and students to invite their entire families and other loved ones to the celebrations The larger celebrations were joyful and inspirational
In other news, WTEF partnered with MSD Wayne officials to secure multiple grants. One award was the largest-ever grant in support of Wayne's Science Summer Safari received from the Central Indiana Community Foundation and Lilly Endowment ($10,000). WTEF also landed a $16,500 Council District Crime Prevention grant for the Giants Marketplace, a school-based food pantry serving families facing food insecurity. The grant allowed the district to expand the number of families served from 50 to 200+ per month.
Finally, WTEF facilitated three new endowed funds: the Dorinda York Art and Design Scholarship Fund, the Giant Dreams Scholarship Fund, and the Ron Hoke Legacy Fund for Area 31 student programs WTEF works annually with major gift partners to discuss interests, share school district needs, and identify possible impact areas that are of mutual interest. WTEF Executive Director Lisa Baize personally works with all fund donors to ensure their intentions are being fulfilled, inform them of school district news, and annually provide an impact report demonstrating how the gifts made a difference
On behalf of the WTEF Board, we thank you for your support, and pledge to continue our efforts in 2022-23 to work with the district to enrich programs, provide resources, and recognize excellence
Kindly,

WTEFSupportHelpsStudentsLearnAbout Gerrymandering
John Dimmick is a Ben Davis University social studies teacher with a great focus on student engagement He loves finding creative ways to get his students interested in sometimes complex topics So when Mr Dimmick decided he wanted to buy a class set of Mapmaker: The Gerrymandering Game, WTEF stepped in to help.
“I use this game in my government class,” said Mr. Dimmick. “It helps explain the rather complicated topic of gerrymandering, which is the idea that political parties sometimes divide up areas in order to give themselves more votes.”
Mr. Dimmick says the Mapmaker game allows students to have a good time while they’re learning to grasp the finer details of this aspect of the American political system.
“It’s a really fun educational tool,” he said. “I’m really grateful to the foundation for helping me get this set.”

GrantforFarm-to-TableCurriculum
In recent years, so-called “Farm-toTable” restaurants have become increasingly popular. These restaurants serve food that comes directly from a particular local farm or ranchnot from distributors or grocery stores. Chef Daniel Schifano, who oversees the Area 31 Career Center’s Culinary Arts Program, thought it was time his students learned about this approach in a more hands-on manner He called his idea the Patio Garden Project “This project allows us to expand the successful traditions of our program by giving students the tools they need to produce their own sustainable food sources, ” said Chef Schifano. “They will be able to use these food sources for themselves and whatever future culinary endeavors they may take on.
“The garden space was designed by the Area 31 Horticulture Science Program,” said Chef Schifano. “Student teams designed several different versions of this garden space and presented their ideas to us. We selected components of multiple proposals that we wanted to incorporate in our garden.
“Looking back at the project and grant I feel that it has just scratched the surface of being a success, ” said Chef Schifano. “This was the first year we harvested from the garden - we had a bounty of peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, and kale. The students were able to utilize this fresh grown produce in a variety of ways, from practicing knife cuts, to making fresh pico for the Harvest menu ”
Chef Schifano said he is looking forward to the coming spring, when his students will be involved for the first time in planting and maintaining the garden: “This will help them better understand the path that our food takes from seed to plate, and the amount of work that goes into a single tomato ”

Stout Field Students Learn Video Editing
The Wayne Township Education Foundation provided funding to purchase WeVideo, a video editing platform, for the Stout Field library. Nancy Genatiempo, Stout Field media specialist, says her students are learning much more than editing skills with their WeVideo program. They’re learning how to work together, and how to lead their fellow students. "When one student didn’t know how to do something, another student jumped in and was eager to share with a peer how to get the desired effect ”
At Stout Field, students in fourth through sixth grade picked a picture book, and then created a promotional book trailer that was viewed by younger students. “A byproduct of the students' work was the community and leadership of all learners.”
In addition, the WeVideo platform helped motivate and enthuse students “It was exciting to see how motivated and enthusiastic students were, regardless of their native language,” said Mrs. Genatiempo. “It was exciting to see students' eyes light up as they were creating something exciting to share with the masses. They were empowered by this moment.”

DESIGNATED & ESTATE PLAN GIFTS
In addition to annual gifts that support annual programming, WTEF also manages 26 endowed funds A $10,000 gift can establish a fund with the intention of awarding funds annually from the interest earned. These permanent funds have been established to create a funding stream for the designated purpose forever or for as long as needed. Five percent (5%) of the year-end balance may then be used for the donor’s designated purpose within MSD Wayne These endowed funds honor or memorialize alumni, community members, and staff members, as well as local organizations. In some cases the funds have been established for college scholarships, and in other cases they have been designated to support a programmatic need within the school district
We also hope you will consider including a gift to WTEF as part of your estate plan. With a planned gift you are continuing a tradition to advance access to academic opportunities for all students in MSD Wayne Including WTEF in your long-term financial or estate plan is a decision that encompasses more than financial goals and tax benefits This decision harnesses your passion to make a lasting impact. Planned gifts provide meaningful support of Wayne Township's students, while helping you achieve your own personal and financial goals Our most popular planned gifts are beneficiary designations and will/trust bequests
WTEF staff can help you find the best option to honor your love for Wayne Township.
