Juror’s Statement Stefano Catalani
Executive Director Gage Academy of Art Seattle, WA
Jurying an exhibition online can be either an intimidating or unimaginative task: after all, the works are delivered through the mediation of images that slide before the juror’s eyes as he tries to assess not just the colors but the heft, texture and smoothness, precision and sloppiness of execution, balance and tension of the design—just to name few aspects—of the work. Somehow, then, the modern jurying process always returns the domain of craft to the supremacy of the visual over the haptic, the fragrant, and the complex.
It was an honor to be asked to be the juror of Craft Forms 2016 at the Wayne Art Center. As I reviewed the works online, I let the words Craft and Form define the framework within which I could let my eyes ‘touch’ and ‘feel’ the works: while Form offered me structure, containment, reference, and endeavor, Craft was the fluid connotation that filled the Form, expanded its shape, brought flesh to the idea of the object, through the process of engaging with the very act of making the Form.

As juror, I always feel I am asked to remotely perform a miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, a parting of the waters so to speak, with the good work delivered safely to the shore. ‘Touching’ and learning to ‘feel’ the forms through the eyes becomes crucial to evaluate and select. And one can do this only through a continued frequentation of craft, and of the formal and technical discourse that informs it.

The result is this exhibition.
The Wayne Art Center is delighted to host Craft Forms 2016! This year, we are honored to welcome Stefano Catalani, Executive Director of the Gage Academy of Art as our juror. We are grateful for Stefano’s efforts in jurying this year’s exhibition as well as his commitment to contemporary craft. This year, 101 works from around the world, including Canada, England, Finland and Taiwan, were selected from 723 submissions. Stefano was charged with the task of narrowing down the entries to assemble a cohesive exhibition, representative of diverse media. Wayne Art Center is equally excited to present this year’s companion show, Making Marks, curated by Mi-Kyoung Lee, Program Director of Craft and Material Studies at the University of the Arts. This exhibition features works by 15 invitational fiber and textile artists who have been working on various methods and processes to express their inner voice. Craft Forms is a monumental undertaking that includes many facets of planning, coordination and execution. It is through the dedication of the Wayne Art Center’s board, staff, committee members, sponsors, patrons, and volunteers, that we are able to produce exhibitions of this caliber. We wish to extend a special word of thanks to our Craft Forms 2016 Chair, Franz Rabauer, whose passionate support of the arts is greatly admired and to Karen Louise Fay, Director of Exhibitions and Events, for her tireless efforts in overseeing this international exhibition and fundraising event. Through the generous time and contributions of so many, we are able to raise significant funds to support Wayne Art Center’s ever-growing programs. Each year, the Philadelphia region looks forward to the opening of Craft Forms and the joining together of artists from throughout the world. The Wayne Art Center is proud to support their unique creative journeys by proving a venue that encourages artistic exploration and expression. We thank you again for your support and your commitment to our mission of enriching our community through the arts!
