Experience Christmas at Hart Square Village

Hart Square Foundation will welcome visitors to Christmas in the Village on December 6, 2025. Experience the magic of the holiday season as it would have been in the early 1800’s as you stroll through the nation’s largest collection of historic log structures by lantern light. This event will promote heritage craftsmanship by showcasing traditional arts, trades, and yuletide pioneer traditions.

Guests will be invited inside cabins from the 18th and 19th centuries to interact with and observe artisans demonstrating popular yuletide traditions of Early America. See everything from candle making, to stocking sewing, to block printing. Services will be taking place throughout the evening in Hart Square’s historic Chapel of Peace for those who wish to experience singing traditional Christmas hymns to the tune of

an 1800’s pump organ. Rebecca Hart, Executive Director, says, “This event began with our founders, Dr. Bob and Mrs. Becky Hart, inviting 50 of their closest friends to a Christmas service in the historic chapel. It has grown into a community event filled with music, traditional crafts and trades, and dancing. We hope

you will join us to experience the magic of the holiday season at Hart Square Village.”

Tickets are available at their website for this immersive holiday experience.

Earl Scruggs Center Unveils Plans for New Interactive Exhibits During Winter Renovation

The Earl Scruggs Center will be temporarily closed from November 27, 2025, through January 31, 2026, as we begin an HVAC renovation and an exciting exhibition installation project that will transform the visitor experience for years to come.

These new exhibits and updates are the result of strong community support, generous donors, and more than a year and a half of planning and development. Thanks to this effort, we are installing brand-new interactive exhibits designed to bring Earl Scruggs’ legacy—and the music and stories of our region—to life in dynamic, hands-on ways. The new interactives will offer fresh experiences for all visitors, with special features created specifically for young learners, school groups, and families, reinforcing our commitment to engaging the next generation with music, history, and creativity.

Although our doors will be closed, our mission continues! Throughout December, the Earl Scruggs Center will offer special holiday shopping days in the gift shop and host music on the Court Square on December 12 during Uptown Shelby’s Christmas festivities.

Additionally, on December 17, we will host an open house at the Earl Scruggs Homeplace in the Flint Hill community—a rare chance to step inside the historic site where

Earl’s musical journey began. Registration for this event is required.

In January, we are excited to present a Songwriting Retreat, led by acclaimed bluegrass songwriter Mike Mitchell, taking place January 15–17. This immersive workshop offers aspiring and seasoned songwriters a chance to develop their craft in a setting deeply rooted in musical history.

Those interested in attending or learning about these upcoming events are encouraged to visit www.earlscruggscenter.org or call 704.487.6233 for details and registration. Space for the Scruggs Homeplace open house and Songwriting Retreat is limited.

As we work behind the scenes to bring these new interactive exhibits to life, we remain deeply grateful for the community that has made this milestone possible. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back in early 2026 for a fresh, engaging, and inspiring Earl Scruggs Center experience.

About the Earl Scruggs Center

Blessings in Disguise

(3rd Part of “Gratitude Scavenger Hunt” Series) Some blessings are wrapped in laughter, joy, and obvious goodness. Others come disguised, hidden inside hardship, disappointment, waiting, or pain. These are the blessings we rarely ask for, but often need the most. They stretch us, shape us, deepen us, and ultimately help us see God in a way comfort never could. Romans 8:28 (NLT) says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” God doesn’t promise that all things feel good. He promises to work all things for good. There’s a big difference. Hard places don’t always come with explanations, but they do come with divine purpose and gratitude in those seasons isn’t denying the struggle. It’s recognizing that God is still working even when you can’t see how. Everyone can thank God on the mountaintop. However, gratitude in the valley is different. That gratitude is raw. Costly. Refined. It is not cheap praise; it is deep praise. It says, “God, I trust you even here.”

DANYALE PATTERSON

beg God to remove are the very tools he uses to grow us. Joseph didn’t know that betrayal and imprisonment were leading him to a palace. Ruth didn’t know that loss was leading her to lineage. Paul didn’t know that his thorn would teach him reliance. You don’t always see the blessing when the burden arrives, but the blessing is there all the same. Many blessings are disguised because spiritual growth often comes wrapped in uncomfortable packaging. Trials become teachers. Waiting becomes a workshop. Weakness becomes the doorway where God shows his strength. And when the season finally shifts, we look back and say, “I didn’t like it, but I needed it. God was faithful all along.”

Hard places reveal things comfort hides.

• They show us our need for God.

• They strengthen muscles we didn’t know we had.

• They strip away distractions.

• They draw us deeper into prayer.

• They teach us compassion for others.

• They position us for greater purpose.

Gratitude in hard places isn’t about celebrating pain; it’s about celebrating God’s presence in the pain. It’s about saying, “Lord, I don’t understand this, but I know You’re with

me. I know you’re working. I know this won’t be wasted.” That kind of gratitude builds unshakable faith. It anchors your hope. It reminds your heart that God writes better endings than the enemy writes beginnings.

Let’s Pray:

“Lord, I praise you for being faithful. You are my rock and a very present help in trouble. I don’t understand or even like the pain I’m going through, but I am not running from you. I am running to you. You are the strength of my life. Forgive me for complaining. I hold on to your unchanging hand. Thank you for never leaving me or forsaking me in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

CONNECTING

TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Memory of a

When I’m bow hunting, one of the first things I do is range distances, so I don’t have to do it when (if) a deer shows up. After ranging these distances, I find a marker to remind me of what that distance is. The second thing I do (and do it throughout the hunt) is visualize where and how a deer might show up – and how I would respond. I think about angles. I look at obstacles. And I visualize how I will have to maneuver how I’m sitting in order to position myself for a shot. I will also raise my bow to simulate how it all could go down. Every hunter does this. It sounds simplistic and even immature, but what we do is pretend. Probably the same thing we did as a kid. Yeah, I know that doesn’t sound too professional, but that’s exactly what it is. It just pretending a desired or potential situation. And the truth is, if I have visualized (pretended) it enough, when reality comes, the chances are I will be less surprised, less uncertain, and more confident. And if done repeatedly, I will drown out negative thoughts and doubts that will flood my mind during a real encounter. Visualizing or pretending is not faking it until you make it. It’s visualizing or pretending what you already know and who you already are. Because there are voices and past situations that are always there to try to tell you something different.

Pretending is a great tool – in life – and as a Christian. It allows us to feed our minds the truth about who we are, whose we are, and the truth about our circumstances, until the encounter comes. Let me explain. Right now, you feel like God has forgotten about you, that He’s nowhere to be found, and even that He doesn’t care. That’s what you “feel.” But you “know” that’s not the truth. You know it from what the scriptures say and from your past experiences, and from the present and past experiences of others. Your feelings cause doubt, uncertainty, and a loss of confidence. But because you know, you pretend. You visualize. You imagine. But not because of fantasy. Because of reality. Here’s how that looks. When you’re in the season of doubt, you pick up your Bible. You range the distance it covers and begin pretending with sentences like these. “God has not forgotten about me.” “God has never left me and will never leave me.” “God cares about my life and all that I’m going through.” “God loves me because He just can’t help it.” And say these and do these not because you’re pretending to have a hope-so possibility, but because you have been bombarded with lies that have affected how you feel. As hard as it may be right now, start pretending what you already know is a reality.

HEALTHCARE OPEN ENROLLMENT IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. WHICH DATES ARE RIGHT FOR YOU?

“My friend simply stated that she was worried because it was a school cancellation day for snow and there were many children at home without a meal.

She went on to say that many of these kids would not eat during the day because they did not have food in their homes (there are many reasons children do not have reliable food in their homes).

More often than not, the only stable meal is the daily school meal,” said Heather.

“I have always had a ‘soft-spot’ for children and I could not bear the thought of any child going hungry; no one deserves to live in that condition, especially innocent children,” said Heather.

so FKCC can make home deliveries of food and books for each child in the home.

FKCC purchases ‘shelf stable food’ (food that does not perish easily).

FKCC also provides fresh items such as bread, fruits and vegetables. Those are provided, along with the staples, after FKCC accesses the number of family members and specific needs, such as age and potential allergies.

household, an age appropriate book. Reading Kids has also established and stocks seven ‘Little Free Libraries’ around Cleveland County.

They hope to provide personal hygiene essentials. “The experience is extremely rewarding. It is heart warming to see a child run to our volunteers as they deliver their food and book boxes. The children are happy to see us. It is simply a wonderful experience,” said Heather.

Feeding Kids Cleveland County also hosts the Community Table Thanksgiving Meal on Saturday, November 22 at 4pm in 6 locations around Cleveland County. The six locations will serve approximately 1500 meals and create an opportunity for fellowship and community.

According to a 20232024 study, Cleveland County, has one of the highest unemployment rates in NC as well as a 20.2% rate of food insecurity Those numbers are a sobering indication of other underlying problems which may affect a child’s potential to learn. “Many children who are food insecure, may also have safety and shelter concerns,” explained Heather.

“We are careful on every level, we even ask about appliances. If the family does not have essential kitchen equipment, such a refrigerator and stove/microwave, we need to know so that we send out items for their particular need,” explained Heather.

These locations include:

• Bobby Bell Pavilion, 126 W. Marion St., Shelby.
