Thanks to the generous support of Enbridge Gas NC, The Schiele Museum of Natural History has unveiled its newest experience – the Explorer’s Outpost. Nature lovers of all ages and students from all over the surrounding areas, are invited to examine plants, animals, and their habitats through hands-on activities and guided exploration in a beautiful new space.
The Explorer’s Outpost is open daily and included with the purchase of museum admission.

Dates and times include: for this exciting new learning space. A team from Enbridge’s Gastonia location visited the Outpost during its first days of operation. After exploring, they put in a morning of volunteer work at the museum. “Enbridge Gas is proud to support The Schiele

Events. “We believe in investing in educational experiences that empower communities, and we look forward to seeing families engage with nature in such a hands-on, meaningful way.”
The exhibit space includes a climbing wall modeled after a waterfall, a cabin, a cozy cave, towering man-made trees, and lots of plant and animal specimens that children and adults can examine. Education staff provide guided learning opportunities that change every week based on monthly themes. Planned themes include nocturnal animals, geology, and arctic ecosystems.
Besides serving as a hands-on naturalist center for the public, the Explorer’s Outpost does double duty as an after-school program space. The Schiele’s Kid’s Quest Afterschool Adventures program serves area students in grades K-5, with pickup from six schools in Gaston County. The program’s capacity has expanded over the last several years in order to meet the needs of families in the community.

Representatives from Pinnacle Classical Academy in Shelby and Gardner-Webb University met recently to establish a Skills Training Partnership Agreement. Offered through GWU’s Searight Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) Program, this five-week summer college readiness experience will strengthen Pinnacle high school students’ development of advanced analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Interim GWU President Nate Evans welcomed Pinnacle representatives to GardnerWebb for the formal signing ceremony. “I’m excited to see the support here today,” Evans praised. “These partnerships are vital for Gardner-Webb. It plugs us into the community with the incoming students we serve. To have these partnerships, to bring folks in to build those pathways early, ultimately that serves the region and the greater good. We’re proud to do that, and I just want to offer a sincere thank you to everyone who was involved in making this happen.”
Speaking on behalf of Pinnacle was former N.C. state Sen. Wes Westmoreland, a GWU alumnus, who is vice chair and a founding member of Pinnacle’s Board of Directors. He thanked the University for collaborating to provide the academic opportunity to Pinnacle students and recognized the efforts of Dr. Anthony Negbenebor, Gardner-Webb professor and assistant vice president for Business Development and Partnerships. “Dr. Negbenebor has been a friend, a teacher and advisor for many, many years,” Westmoreland shared. “Thank you for being the catalyst to bring this together. I graduated in ’88 and have served as a trustee here. I’m so very happy to have this relationship with Gardner-Webb. We really appreciate the partnership, and we look forward to where this is going.”
Joining Westmoreland from Pinnacle were Dr. Pauline Cahill, a local dentist and also a founding board member; Chief Education Officer Dr. Shelly L. Shope, a GWU alumna; Headmaster Angela Brooks; and Dean of Academics Jeff
Ziegler. Pinnacle’s Board is chaired by former N.C. state Sen. Debbie Clary, who also helped found the public charter school in 2013.
Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters noted that career exploration begins with K–12 education, and the opportunities provided during the critical high school years greatly influence students’ educational journeys and future professional paths. “The Skills Training Partnership Agreement between Gardner-Webb University’s Searight Professional and Continuing Education Program and Pinnacle Classical Academy offers students the opportunity to engage in experiential learning, enhancing critical thinking and refining the academic skills necessary for college readiness,” she explained.
The partnership agreement initiates the Academic Skills Accelerated Program (ASAP) for Pinnacle students in 10th- through 12th-grade. Beginning in June 2026, Gardner-Webb will provide courses in AI, cybersecurity, project management, economics and personal finance, medical terminology, introduction to agriculture, and American history of inventors.
Coupled with an emphasis on Christian business ethics and disciplinary concepts, the classes will offer students opportunities for reality-based and hands-on learning. They will be mentored by the Gardner-Webb faculty and participate in networking with corporate CEOs from regional, national and international companies. Business etiquette and professional skills will be emphasized. The program concludes with a field-study tour of the BMW automotive plant in Greer, S.C.
Waters concluded, “We are honored to have the opportunity to support the high school students participating in this initiative. This partnership builds on the current foundation of PCA’s academics, strengthening the primary commitment of meeting the needs of our community.”
The ASAP program is scheduled for June 9 through July 9, 2026. For more information, visit the Searight Pace website or email pace@ gardner-webb.edu.

THURS., OCT. 23 noon-5pm

By Gary Miller
FRIDAY, OCT. 24 8am-3pm

I was reminded the other day about a bow hunt I took with my son several years ago. I remember it because it was a rare thing for him to be able to go. Since he was a little boy, he loved basketball and got to be pretty good. Good enough to play in college. For those of you who don’t know, basketball and deer hunting season happen during the same time of the year. This is not good for the father who loves both. For many years, while others were in the woods in the afternoon, I was either at practice or at a game. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. And, as you can imagine, my son’s opportunities to hunt were scarce. So, this trip was a first for us. It was his first bow season and basketball practice was two weeks away. Not only would he be hunting with a bow, but I would be leaving him to sit in a tree stand alone, while I hunted a few hundred yards away. On the second evening of hunting, he met me at the top of the hill standing beside the deer he had shot, tracked, and dragged out. I was a proud dad. Even though that evening was special, it was actually the first evening that I was just reminded of. It was the evening when he met me at the top of that same hill, empty handed. It was my words to him as we drove home. He had not seen a deer. I asked him that evening, “Son, do you think I had rather shoot a deer, or see you shoot a deer?” He said, “Me.” I asked him again. “Do you think I would rather put you in the best place to hunt or me?” Again, he said, “Me.” I responded, “Good.”
Now if you’re a parent, you understand the power of that short conversation. You understand that my son was getting the picture of the love of a father and the greater desire I have for him than I do for myself. I want to hope that I had lived that in front of him before.
Why did my thoughts go back to that time? I believe the Lord wanted to reminded me of that to let me know how He feels about me. I can imagine, if only slightly, how much He must want what’s best for me. And even though there are days it seems I’m sitting in a place of no hope, I have confidence that if the Lord has put me there, He must know there’s a great reward that will soon come my way.

Cleveland Community College’s sixth annual Yetis Athletics Golf Tournament teed off Friday, October 10, at Deerbrook Golf Club, bringing together 32 teams and 128 golfers in support of Yetis Athletics. The event raised nearly $45,000 to fund athletic scholarships and enhance the College’s growing athletics programs.
This year’s winning team featured Matt Bryant, Jason Deans, Curtis Bailey, and Rod Howard. Additional recognitions went to Dan Jablonski and Robby Reynolds for Closest to the Pin, and Dalton Putnam for Longest Drive. The tournament was made possible through the generosity of sponsors and community partners, who provided monetary support and donations to a silent auction. The Title Sponsor was Bank OZK, with Platinum Sponsors Berry Business Systems and Albemarle Corporation providing significant support.
“A huge thank you to all our amazing
sponsors and to Tommy Gales and his staff at Deerbrook Golf Club for hosting such a fantastic tournament,” said Grayson Pierce, executive director of the Cleveland Community College Foundation. “Because of your support, we were able to raise important funds that will go directly toward athletic scholarships. You’re making a real impact in the lives of our student-athletes, helping them grow on the field or court, in the classroom, and beyond. We couldn’t do it without you!”
Funds raised through the annual tournament directly benefit the Cleveland Community College Foundation, providing scholarship opportunities and resources that support the success of Yetis student-athletes both academically and athletically.

(3rd Part of “REMOVE THE MASK” Series)

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Sometimes, the hardest mask to recognize is the one that looks holy. It is not made of plastic or paint, but of words, habits, and appearances that look spiritual but may not come from the heart. We learn how to say all the right things: “I’m blessed,” “God is good,” “I’m praying for you.” We show up at church, lift our hands in worship, serve on teams, and post verses on social media. Yet sometimes, behind the smile and the scripture quotes, our hearts feel distant. We have learned how to perform for God without truly being with Him. God is not pleased with this, he speaks about it through the prophet in Isaiah 29:13 (NLT) “And so the Lord says, “These people say they are mine. They honor me
DANYALE PATTERSON
with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but manmade rules learned by rote.”
Authenticity is Key
The mask of spirituality is tricky because it feels good to appear strong in our faith. We want to be seen as faithful, mature, or together. But God is not looking for perfect words; he is looking for a surrendered heart. When we hide behind religious activity, we risk missing the very thing our souls crave: connection. God does not want us to perform for him; he wants us to walk with him. Jesus had strong words for the Pharisees, the most religious people of his time, because they loved appearance more than authenticity. They obeyed every rule, yet missed the relationship. They wore the mask of spirituality so tightly that they could not see their need for grace. Maybe you have been there. Maybe you have mistaken busyness for closeness or activity for intimacy. The good news is that God is not mad at you. He is inviting you deeper. When you come before him honestly, with no filters and no pretending, you will find his presence waiting to
meet you right where you are.
LET’S PRAY:
“Lord, you are the God of truth. I praise your holy name. Please help me remove the mask of spirituality. I don’t want to just look close to you, I want to be close to you. Renew my heart with real love for your presence. Let my worship be authentic, not rehearsed. Draw me back to intimacy with you. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Parents: It’s time to talk... about sex.
Some tips on talking with your preteen or teen about sex are:
Try to answer what’s being asked, not what you think is being asked.
If you really do sense there is a question behind the question, go ahead and carefully try to give your emotional support.
Try to be aware of your own attitudes.
Try to convey that you believe in your child and you’re more concerned about his/her quality of life and relationships with others rather than what they have done.
Use humor but don’t laugh at your kids.
Don’t try to cover everything in one conversation. If you haven’t started the conversation yet, it’s never too late to start!
