and cones were placed strategically for ease of placement before the parade began. Anticipation was high as many residents remembered their years as Mountaineers, fondly looking back on their parades “way back when.”

Excited for the day’s activities and the crowds that were sure to follow, Downtown merchants decorated the windows of their stores in anticipation. Stacy Brown, Manager of Crave Hot Dogs and BBQ shared that she and another staff member had painted the restaurant windows the night before.

Other participating merchants included Papa John’s Pizza, Royal T Café, Albemarle, KM Marketplace, The Imperial Mercantile, and 238 Cherokee Grill.

The crowd had a great time waiting for the parade to begin. Some danced in the street, and kids played with balls and other items shared by merchants. One little girl jumped rope, and another dreamed of the day she would be a KMHS cheerleader. Everyone was laughing and having a great time.

At 3 p.m., the crowds began to gather. At first, it was just a few people here and there placing chairs, and it quickly turned into a steady

Jersey Mike’s Subs opens on King Street

The newest restaurant in Kings Mountain, Jersey Mike’s opened for business after much anticipation on Wednesday, September 18, at 10 a.m., at 110 W. King Street, Unit 1, near the Overhead Bridge.

Lines formed quickly as patrons waited to try the store’s fresh-made subs for themselves. The lines continued throughout the evening. The line-staff were fast, efficient, and courteous, as customers placed orders and patiently waited to pay for their meals.

According to the company’s website sharing the history of the chain, “Mike opens up one of the first submarine sandwich spots in the country. It’s a family run storefront offering up this relatively new food invention for the first time in America. It’s an instant success as families line up for the delicious food and friendly service.”

“Mike chose this scenic vacation spot on the Jersey Shore close to NYC, Philly, and Washington DC to open up his first shop. Located on the boardwalk where people would spend their summers surfing, relaxing, and enjoying time with their families, it was the perfect location for this new concept in food service.”

Albemarle submits permits for potential redevelopment of KM mine

Albemarle Corporation, a global

and

permit applications for the potential redevelopment of the Kings Mountain Mine, one of the few known hard-rock lithium deposits in the U.S. Development of the mine is subject to the successful completion of permitting and a final investment decision prior to starting construction.

Albemarle must secure permits or approvals from the City of Kings Mountain, several divisions within the State of North Carolina, and the federal government to construct

and operate the proposed mine. The permit review process covers areas such as water, air, noise, and land use and is subject to agency timelines that may last two years or more. It is expected to include extensive agency and stakeholder reviews and comments.

"Completing the submission of our primary state and federal permit applications was a key focus area for the project this year and marks a significant milestone in our journey to redevelop one of the best lithium resources in the world,” said Albemarle Senior Permitting and Sustainability Manager Erik Carlson. “We remain steadfast in our efforts to advance this project by im-

plementing industry best practices for responsible mining and meeting the high standards required by governmental agencies.”

Once operational, the mine is anticipated to produce up to 420,000 tons of lithium-bearing spodumene concentrate yearly, providing a crucial building block for sustainable transportation and supporting key defense applications. Lithium has been identified as a critical material for energy by the U.S. federal government. The mine’s redevelopment is supported by a combined $250 million in grants from the Departments of Defense and Energy.

In addition to the prepa-

ration and submittal of permit applications, Albemarle continues a comprehensive stakeholder outreach program, sharing details of the project through a monthly Community Advisory Panel, periodic town hall, and open house events, and operates a Project Center in downtown Kings Mountain. Earlier this year, Albemarle also commenced the public participation portion of a voluntary Environmental

and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). The assessment is key to aligning the mine’s redevelopment with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance’s Standard for Responsible Mining, the most comprehensive set of globally recognized standards for responsible mining.

The ESIA seeks to develop environmental and social management plans to minimize adverse impacts and enhance

benefits for the surrounding communities. Albemarle plans to publish and share the assessment’s findings and anticipated management measures with community stakeholders throughout 2024 and 2025. More information about the ESIA, permitting process and progress, and the mine’s proposed project plan can be found at www.albemarlekingsmountain.com.

Gov. vetoes school vouchers and ICE Cooperation Bill

Governor Roy Cooper vetoed House Bill 10 on Friday, September 20, the Republican-backed bill that would fund private school vouchers and require sheriffs to cooperate with requests from federal immigration authorities. HB10 would spend about $500 million of taxpayer money on private school vouchers, known as the Opportunity Scholarship Program. The legislature opened the voucher program to everyone regardless of income, creating a waitlist of about 55,000 families.

Republicans have enough votes to overturn Cooper’s vetoes. The Governor vetoed the bill, expressing concerns that it would divert taxpayer money from public schools to private institutions. Education and business leaders from both parties joined the Governor, arguing that the bill would hurt public school funding, especially in rural communities.

Governor Cooper issued a statement saying, “This bill takes public taxpayer dollars from the public schools and gives it to private school vouchers that will be used by wealthy families. Studies show that private school vouchers do not improve student performance, but we won’t know with North Carolina’s voucher scheme because it has the least accountability in the country. All public schools will be hurt by the legislature wasting its planned $4 billion of the public’s money over the next decade, with rural public schools being hurt the worst. This money should be used to improve our public schools by raising teacher pay and investing in public school students. Therefore, I veto the bill.”

At the press conference, Governor Cooper stressed the importance of investing in public

education. He argued that instead of directing hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars toward vouchers for private schools, which would largely benefit the wealthiest in the state, the legislature should focus on funding public schools. He said this would ensure that public schools, educators, and students have the necessary resources to succeed.

“I am an educator first and a Republican second,” said Burke County Board of Education Member Wendi Craven. “Education is the cornerstone of our nation, and once it fails, this country fails. Instead of continuing to divide and conquer, which shows a complete lack of leadership, legislators should support public education.”

“This bill encourages families to send their children to private schools in other counties, draining our public schools and dividing our community,” Chairman of the Washington County Board of Education Carlos Riddick told reporters. “Our students deserve strong, well-funded schools right here at home, not a system that incentivizes them to leave. House Bill 10 doesn’t just redirect taxpayer money— it weakens the backbone of our county by undermining public education.”

Governor Cooper warned that expanding private school vouchers would disproportionately harm rural counties in North Carolina, where access to private education is limited, and public schools serve as community pillars. Twenty-eight rural counties have either no private schools or just one participating in the voucher program. He said that diverting public funds to wealthier urban areas deepens the resource gap and undermines educational opportunities for rural students.

The Governor noted that public schools serve over 84% of North Carolina’s students and are continually asked to do more with fewer resources. North Carolina ranks near the bottom in K-12 funding, spending nearly $5,000 less per student than the national average. Additionally, the state has fallen to 38th in teacher pay.

According to the Office of State Budget and Management, the full expansion of the taxpayer-funded voucher program could pull nearly $100 million from public schools in its first year alone. The expansion would also add $277 million in new spending in the first year.

“We’re here today because we know that private school vouchers are the biggest threat to public schools in decades,” Cooper told reporters. It is uncertain if the Governor’s veto will hold.

“That veto can be upheld if enough legislators in both parties tell Republican leaders that they don’t want to vote on the veto override this year,” Cooper said. House Bill 10 proposes spending around $500 million in taxpayer funds on private school vouchers through the Opportunity Scholarship Program. By expanding eligibility to all families, regardless of income, the legislature has created a waitlist of approximately 55,000 families.

“Let’s be clear, I am not against private schools and parents choosing that option,” Cooper said. “It works for some children, but I am against taking taxpayer dollars out of the public schools and giving private school vouchers to the wealthiest North Carolinians, and that is exactly what House Bill 10 does. Instead, we could use this money that House Bill 10 appropriates to give public school teachers an 8 and a half percent raise and $1,500 retention bonus” and more, he said. The bill also requires sheriffs to cooperate with detention requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, funds increases in K-12 public school and community college enrollment, Medicaid, and broadband high-speed internet expansion.

The Governor is appealing to many Republican legislators to avoid a potential veto override. “I hope that there will be enough of them to go to the leadership to say, let’s take a pause,” he said.

Be Anxious for Nothing, final reflections

As we conclude our month-long series on anxiety, I hope you have memorized, actualized, and implemented this verse in your devotion time.

“Do not be anxious for anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7).

The final phrase, “will

guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus,” refers specifically to God’s peace as well as the verse’s overarching theme. Our relationship with Christ directly impacts our freedom from anxiety and fear. God’s peace guards our hearts and minds as we dialogue with the Lord through praise, worship, and prayer. My last grandmother is 98 years old and nearing the end of her earthly life, yet she remains faithful and at peace. She

has always been known as a prayer warrior, which has not changed even now that she resides at the Hospice House. Her prayers for her family and others remain strong, as does her love for Christ. I am reminded of Paul’s words to the Thessalonians, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) To be sure, we may not be thankful for the circumstances we find ourselves in, but we can be thankful in all circumstances, for we know Christ is with us.

Do not let fear and anxiety rob you of the joy in Christ Jesus. Trust me, I am preaching to myself. Fear and anxiety not only rob you of joy but rob you of your earthly life, friendships, relationships, and connection with the Lord. Matthew 6:27 exclaims, “Who of you, by worrying, can add a single hour to his life?” What are you worrying about today? What fear grips your thoughts?

How many of the things we worry about will matter in one, five, or fifteen years? Do not let the voice of fear take hold of you. Instead, allow God to give you peace and guard your

heart and mind. Zach Williams’ 2016 hit song says it this way, Fear, he is a liar

He will take your breath

Stop you in your steps Fear, he is a liar

He will rob your rest Steal your happiness Cast your fear in the fire Because fear, he is a liar

My friends, I pray God’s presence and peace will be so abounding in your lives that there will be no room for fear and anxiety.

Blessings, Jonathan Bundon

PARADE

From Page 1A stream of people until they filled every inch of space along the shady side of S. Railroad Avenue. By 3:30 p.m., the last few stragglers arrived, taking up the remaining slots along the railroad side of the street.

KM Forward sponsored the Block Party, and WGNC AM 1450 and FM 101.1 played the DJ throughout the event. Everyone involved wanted to create a memory for these students.

Most of the families in attendance were there to watch their kids in the parade, but KMHS alums also attended to cheer on their Kings Mountain Mountaineers. Once a Mountain-

eer, always a Mountaineer. The parade arrived right on cue, led by a KMPD cruiser with its lights flashing. The crowd roared as the band arrived on Railroad Avenue, cheering them on. Officers directed traffic along the route from First Baptist Church, down W. Mountain Street, then right onto S. Railroad Avenue. Kings Mountain Fire Department members kept a watchful eye on things with safety in mind. Kings Mountain Tourism and Events supervised the usual chaos at the end of the parade route with great skill. It almost seemed that the parade was over in the blink of an eye. As quickly as the crowd

arrived, it had dissipated. Patrons tossed their trash in receptacles as they departed, and in minutes, the street was empty. City employees and volunteers cleared the barricades and cones by 4:30 p.m. The parade was gone without a trace by 5 p.m. Merchants returned to work, happy they could provide the KMHS students with a memorable school experience downtown. Everyone involved wanted to participate, not because they had to, but because they wanted to be a part of something fun for the community.

After all, Mountie Pride runs deep here.

To honor and celebrate Kings Mountain’s great history and champion its future, The Albemarle Foundation is offering a special grant program. $150,000 in grant funding will

Mountaineers open Big South 3A schedule with 39-13 win over Hunter Huss Huskies

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers began Big South 3A Conference action Friday night at John Gamble Stadium with a 39-13 homecoming win over the Hunter Huss Huskies.

The Mountaineers will hit the road this week at North Gaston. They will remain on the road next week against the Forestview Jaguars and will return to Gamble Stadium at 7:30 p.m. October 11 to face a strong South Point eleven.

The Mountaineer defense held the Huskies to minus five yards rushing and a third down incomplete pass to get the game underway. Facing fourth and 15 at their own 15, the Huskies went into punt formation but a bad snap resulted in the Mountaineers getting the ball inside the Huss one.

The Huss defense didn’t budge on three carries by running back Josiah Hill, but on fourth down Hill bulled his way into the end zone for a 6-0 lead and Matt Rhom added the point-after for a 7-0 lead the Mountaineers would not relinquish.

Huss did offer a quick scare, though, as Gene Neely took Rhom’s kickoff from inside the one yard line 99 plus yards for a touchdown.

The Mountaineer defense blocked the PAT attempt to keep the game at 7-6.

“They’ve got good athletes,” Mountaineer coach Strait Herron noted. “They’re a scary team to play. They can have a big play at any moment as we saw on their

kickoff return for a touchdown. One of our goals is not to give up big plays. Our defense played pretty well. They got their other touchdown late but we’ve got some things to fix.”

Former Huskie Jayden Gash returned the ensuing kickoff to the 13 and then caught a quick out from quarterback TJ Armstrong to put the Mountaineers at their own 27. An 11-yard reception by William Vaughn and an 11-yard run around left end by Hill moved the first down marker to the KM 49. Then, what may have been the play of the game, quarterback TJ Armstrong threw to Gash who was hit at the Huss five and fumbled but picked up the ball and raced into the end zone at the 5:24 mark. Rhom’s PAT hiked the lead to 14-6 and the Huskies would not get any closer.

“Everybody did good,” Herron said. “Gash had a very good night. That touchdown where he fumbled and picked it up and took it for a touchdown was really good.

“Eli (Lipscomb) and Antonio (Armstrong) really had good nights too.”

KM’s next drive was halted by a pass interception at the Huss two-yard line but on the Huskies’ first play from scrimmage Armstrong sacked the QB in the end zone for a safety and a 16-6 lead.

Huss had to kick off from its own 20 and KM’s Jayden Williams returned it to the 46 to set up a six-play drive that ended on a 37-yard pass over

the middle from Armstrong to William Vaughn. Rhom’s PAT made it 23-6. A 15-yard reception by Gash set it up.

stopped the Huskies again and a punt went out of bounds at midfield. Strong running by Hill and pass receptions by Armstrong, Gash and Hill set up a fiveyard reception by Hill with 34 seconds left in the half for a 30-6 lead.

the game wide open by driving the second half kickoff 85 yards to go up 36-6 on Hill’s one-yard TD. Another personal foul by the Huskies resulted in KM kicking off from the Huss 45.

JVs whip Huss In BSC opener

Kings Mountain High’s JV football team began Big South Conference play Thursday with a 26-6 victory over the Hunter Huss Huskies in Gastonia.

After two Huss unsportsmanlike conduct penalties Huss faced fourth and 19 from its own 19 and they had to punt. Gash made a big return but a holding call during the run caused the Mountaineers to begin at their own 48. Big runs by Hill and a reception by Armstrong, and yet another Huss penalty for ripping a KM helmet off, put the Mountaineers at the Huss 10. An offside penalty on KM forced a fourth and five and Rhom came on to kick a 22-yard field goal to make it 39-6. Kings Mountain began substituting freely and Huss

was able to get a one-yard run by Javarion Brown and an Oberson Janot PAT with 6:05 left to account for the final margin.

Looking to this week’s game at North Gaston, Coach Herron said the Mountaineers have some things to fix.

“We’ve really got to work this week,” he said. “They’re a team we can’t take lightly. We have to get prepared and be ready to execute.

“They’re pretty basic,” he noted. “They run a spread offense so we have to get our guys in the right places.”

Most KM players that

have been injured were back last week but offensive lineman Dom Davis is still on the injured list.

“Our defensive lineman Wiley Rainey is still not a hundred percent. We think we can get him back on the field soon.” Herron noted that this week’s game at North Gaston could be affected by the weather.

“It’s supposed to be really wet,” he said. “We don’t know if it will be changed or not. We have to use this as an opportunity to get better.”

KMHS volleyball continues to roll

kills and a block.

The JVs will host North Gaston Thursday at 7 p.m.

KJ Bell threw three touchdown passes. Cayden Smith, Xavier Hutchens and Javion Hill had one apiece. Khareem Coleman had one rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion. It was a great all-around performance by the entire team. After giving up a touchdown in the first period, the defense held the Huskies scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Absentee Ballot Voting

The absentee ballot request deadline is 5:00 PM. Tuesday, October 29, for the general election on November 5. Any North Carolina registered voter may request, receive, and vote a mail-in absentee ballot where absentee voting is permitted.

Registered voters in North Carolina must request an absentee ballot with an official N.C. Absentee Ballot Request Form. There are two ways to access and submit the form: online or on paper.

You may acquire an online request form through the N.C. Absentee Ballot Portal at https://votebymail.ncsbe. gov/app/home. There are several options within the portal. Not all options are available to every voter.

• Option 1: Request an Absentee Ballot. All registered North Carolina Voters may use this option to request an absentee by mail ballot. Your request is sent to your county board of elections office, and when ballots are available for the election, they will mail your ballot to the address you provided. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5:00 PM the Tuesday before Election Day. Visually impaired voters who would like to request an accessible ballot will also use Option 1 to submit their request.

• Option 2: Access Military/Overseas Voter Services. If you are active military, the spouse or dependent of an active military service member, or a U.S. citizen outside the United States, you may use this option to request your absentee ballot. The deadline for a military/overseas voter to request an absentee ballot is 5:00 PM the day before Election Day.

• Option 3: Accessible Ballot. If you are a visually impaired voter who has requested an accessible ballot and has been informed that

your ballot is available, select this option to access your ballot. If you would like to learn more about how this option works before you access your ballot, go to https://votebymail.ncsbe.gov/sites/37/ demo/app/home to practice with a demo ballot. The deadline to complete and return your absentee by mail ballot in the portal is 7:30 PM on Election Day.

For general information or to request that an absentee by mail request form be mailed to you, please call (919)-8140700 or contact your county board of elections directly. Their contact information can be found here: https:// vt.ncsbe.gov/BOEInfo/. Blind or visually impaired voters may contact the ADA Coordinator, Allison Blackman, at ADACoordinator@ ncsbe.gov, (919) 814-0705, 6400 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-6400.

• Option 4: - Sample Ballot. Any voter may use this option to view the contests and candidates specific to their eligible ballot at https:// votebymail.ncsbe.gov/app/ home, where you may mark and download a sample ballot. This serves as only a sample and is not your official ballot.

You may instead acquire a printed Absentee ballot request form. A downloadable copy of the 2024 N.C. Absentee Ballot Request Form in English (PDF) or 2024 N.C. Absentee Ballot Request Form in Spanish (PDF) is linked from the https://www. ncsbe.gov/voting/vote-mail web page. After completing the form, submit it to the county board of elections in person or by mail via the US Postal Service, DHL, FedEx, or UPS.

Once you have requested your absentee ballot, you can track its status from printed to accepted by signing up online for status notifications

through BallotTrax at https:// northcarolina.ballottrax.net/ voter/, which will be available 30 days before the election.

For members of the military and overseas voters, the requested absentee ballot will arrive where you specified on the FPCA. The ballot return deadline via online/email or Fax is 7:30 PM ET on Election Day. The ballot return deadline via mail is 12:01 AM on Election Day (your local time). It must be put in the mail by this deadline and then reach your county board of elections by 5:00 PM ET on the last business day before the county canvass, which occurs ten days after each election, except for September and October odd-year municipal elections when it’s seven days after the election.

A Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB) is available for military and overseas voters if you do not receive it after following the proper ballot request steps. You can find out whether your vote counted in the “Your Absentee Ballot” section of the Voter Search database at https://vt.ncsbe. gov/RegLkup/. Under North Carolina law, all early mail or in-person votes are considered absentee votes. Your ballot status will also appear in the “Voter History” section when your county completes the post-election process of assigning voter history to your record. This process may take up to a few weeks after Election Day.

Does Medicare Cover Cataract Surgery?

Dear Savvy Senior,

How does Medicare cover cataract surgery? My eye doctor recently told me I’ve developed cataracts and should consider making plans for surgery in the next year or so.

Almost 67

Dear Almost,

Like gray hair and wrinkles, cataracts are an inevitable part of the aging process. Eventually, everyone (usually in their 60s) will develop cataracts, a condition that causes cloudy or blurry vision. The only way to correct this is through cataract surgery.

Fortunately, Medicare does cover medically necessary cataract surgery, which includes removing the cataract and implanting a standard intraocular lens (IOL). This is a small, lightweight, clear disk that replaces the focusing power of the eye’s natural crystalline lens to restore clear vision. This procedure is performed using traditional surgical techniques or lasers.

This coverage can be a substantial savings, since cataract surgery often costs about $1,800 to $2,800 per eye.

Cataract surgery is usually an outpatient procedure, covered under Medicare Part B. Once you pay the annual Part B deductible, which is $240 in 2024, you’re responsible for the Part B coinsurance.

That means you’ll pay 20 percent of the cost for covered services yourself. If you have a Medicare supplemental policy, also known as Medigap, you’ll have full or partial coverage for the 20 percent Part B coinsurance.

If you happen to be enrolled in a private Medicare Advantage plan, rather than original Medicare, you’ll also have coverage for cataract surgery. However, you may have to pay different deductibles or copayments and need to use an in-network provider. You’ll need to call your plan to find out its coverage details before you schedule surgery.

What’s Not Covered

Be aware that Medicare only covers cataract surgery with standard (monofocal) intraocular lenses, which improves vision at just one distance so you may still need glasses for close-up vision. Medicare will not cover premium (multifocal) intraocular lenses that can correct vision far away, up close and in between, so you can go glasses-free after surgery.

Premium interocular lenses are expensive, costing approximately $1,500 to $4,000 per eye, which you would be responsible for if you choose to upgrade. Talk with your doctor about your options and costs before your surgery.

Are Eyeglasses Covered?

Even though Medicare usually doesn’t cover eyeglasses or contact lenses, it will pay 80 percent for one set of corrective glasses or contacts after cataract surgery. Medicare, however, limits its coverage to standard eyeglass frames and lenses. If you want to get

deluxe frames, progressive or tinted lenses or scratch-resistant coating for glasses, you’ll need to pay those costs yourself. Medicare also requires that you purchase the glasses or contacts from a Medicare-approved supplier.

Also, if you have any post-surgery complications or problems that are deemed medically necessary to address by a doctor, Medicare covers those expenses too. Any drops, antibiotics or other medication prescribed after your surgery would be covered by Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.
