Albemarle and Martin Marietta sign innovative agreement

Albemarle announced an innovative agreement with Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. a leading supplier of building materials, including aggregate, cement, ready-mixed concrete, and asphalt, to make beneficial use of extracted limestone material from Albemarle’s proposed Kings Mountain Mine project.

This agreement is part of Albemarle’s plan to resume lithium mining operations at the Kings Mountain Mine in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, including opportunities to repurpose byproduct material and enhance the economic benefits for the surrounding community.

Storm takes its toll on KM

On the afternoon of May 8, Kings Mountain experienced a severe thunderstorm with heavy wind and rain. Trees fell throughout the city, often onto vehicles and houses and across nearby roadways like I-85 North and Hwy 74 East.

Though no tornadoes were reported in King Mountain, the closest one was just 9.5 miles away. The first tornado touched down at 3 p.m., ripping a 22-mile path of destruction between Polkville in Cleveland County to Cherryville in Gaston County before dissipating at 3:45 p.m.

In Kings Mountain, trees toppled throughout the city, including major roads like Battleground Avenue and E. King Street. A large tree fell on the home at 106 N. Battleground Avenue, damaging the roof and HVAC system and causing a gas leak. The Kings Mountain Fire Department arrived at the scene, and city employees quickly cut gas service to the residence.

A large Oak tree also fell at 809 E. King Street, creating a big hole in the ground and temporarily blocking E. King Street in both directions. City employees worked throughout the night to clear debris and restore power across Kings Mountain.

At 3:40 p.m., the second tornado descended 3 miles west of Gastonia, moving eastward and reaching its peak intensity near the U.S.

KM Farmer’s Market kicked off May 4

May 4th was the perfect day to launch a new Foothill Farmers’ Market season in downtown Kings Mountain. Although the rainy weather ended the festivities early, the day extended warm hearts, smiles, and greetings with folks young and old -- all gathered to support local farmers and vendors.

The farmer’s market is a healthy initiative hosted by the Davidson Association as part of its key initiatives and sponsored by Albemarle. It focuses on bringing fresh, affordable produce to the community along with other specialty items. This effort gained momentum last year and convened residents and nearby neighbors, primarily from Kings Mountain and Shelby. Individuals were vis-

iting from Charlotte and as far away as Cincinnati, OH, which was notable for this initial launch.

Tamra Moody, organizer for the Davidson Association Health Committee, mentioned that Kings Mountain has been a food desert for quite a while. She expanded by saying, “The objective is to meet the community where they are. What better way to do that than to partner with the Foothills Farmers’ Market to provide fresh fruits and vegetable to the community, encourage the local farmers to plant more, and provide a meeting place for neighbors to come together every Saturday during the season.”

Likewise, Margot Plonk, founding manager of the Kings Mountain branch of Foothills Farmers’ Market expressed, “It brings me joy to see the Market revitalized! See MARKET, Page 8A

Last weekend, the citizens of Kings Mountain were treated to a rare and beautiful sight - the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis. The display was so remarkable that people from across the county shared photos online. Northern Lights are not typically seen this far south in the United States, making this occurrence all the more special.

If you’ve ever wondered why the Northern Lights come in so many different colors, it’s because they are caused by different elements in the Earth’s atmosphere. Oxygen, the most common element, gives off a fluorescent green and yellow color when hit by electrons in the solar system. Nitrogen causes blue or red colors, sometimes pink, while neon turns orange.

But what actually causes the Northern Lights to appear? According to Space.com, the Northern Lights result from a rather violent event. Energized particles from the sun slam into the Earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph (72 million kph), but our planet’s magnetic field protects us from the onslaught. The Earth’s magnetic field sends these particles to-

wards the North and South poles, resulting in a beautiful light show.

On Thursday, May 9, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center observed a severe geomagnetic storm. Observations around 7

p.m. on Friday reached level 5 of 5 in severity. The last time a solar storm reached that magnitude was in October 2023, at level 4. Amazingly, such a violent event can produce something as beautiful as the Northern Lights.

Bobby Stringfellow

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC

– Bobby William Stringfellow, 91, died May 12, 2024, at Jacob’s Creek Nursing and Rehab Center in Madison, NC, after a gradual decline in health.

He was born on August 17, 1933, in Kings Mountain, NC, to the late Thomas William Stringfellow and Mae Stewart Stringfellow. He was the couple’s only child, and they spoiled him accordingly.

Growing up, Bobby enjoyed riding horses, playing baseball, and expertly crafting sling shots from dogwood branches. Bobby proved to be a bright and industrious student, but he also was known to teachers for his mischievousness. He delivered newspapers on his bicycle as a youngster, and residents commented on his dependability for years.

Born November 24, 1947 in Cleveland County, North Carolina, she was daughter of the late Allen Duke and Evelyn Caveny Graham and was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joe Brown, and her brother, Cpl. Michael Allen Graham. Sheila was raised in Kings Mountain and graduated Kings Mountain High School Class of ‘66. She worked several retail jobs in and around

Barbara Dianne Ledford Hensley

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Barbara Dianne Hensley, 78, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on May 6, 2024 at Atrium Health Mercy in Charlotte, NC.

She was born in Cleveland County, NC, the only child of the late James Clifton and Ruby Irene Elliott Ledford and was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Ann Hensley, an infant daughter, and infant son. She was also preceded in death by a dear friend Brian L. Taylor and her beloved feline companion, Buttons, who gave Dianne countless days of love and fond memories.

Dianne was a longtime

1949. He became interested in hot rod racing for a while before settling down.

He married the late Sybil Blanton Stringfellow in 1957, and they had three children. Daughter Lyn Beam and her husband, Tony Beam, live in Belews Creek, NC; daughter Wendy Stringfellow lives in Walkertown, NC; and son Tommy Stringfellow, of Kings Mountain, preceded him in death.

After getting married, Bobby served in the Army at Fort Benning, GA. He spent the rest of his working days at PPG Industries in Shelby, NC. While his children were young, he played for PPG’s league softball team as second baseman and served as team captain. When his father died suddenly in 1963, Bobby’s Christian faith deepened. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain for more than 60 years.

Bobby’s other past times included fishing at Surfside Beach, SC, and participating in various water sports while he lived at Moss Lake in Kings Mountain. He supported the Carolina Panthers and secured Permanent Seat Licenses for their expansion team. When taking friends or family members to games, he never disappointed with his ability to find free parking in downtown Charlotte.

Also surviving are his grandsons Jonathan Ballinger Jr. and Blake Ballinger, both

her community, most recently for Lowe’s Home Improvement in Gaffney, SC.

Sheila loved traveling and kept a camper in her happy place, Maggie Valley, where she spent her summers. She made lots of friends up in the mountains, and no matter your location, if you were Sheila’s friend, you were a friend for life. Sheila often spoke with and spent time with her friends, much as she did with her kin. She was very family-oriented, keeping up with both the Brown and Graham sprawling clans, checking in often even with her extended family members. Sheila was in church all her life, most recently attending Dixon Presbyterian Church in Kings Mountain. Her family remembers her as a devoted

former member and pianist at Bethany Baptist Church in Grover. She was a graduate of Gardener Webb University and worked for many years at Dixie Industrial and several other companies in clerical positions. Dianne was an avid Elvis fan and enjoyed collecting memorabilia. Dianne will be remembered fondly by all those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her son: Jimmy Hensley and wife Carmen, Grover, NC; granddaughters: Lauren, Madison, and Anna Hensley, all of Grover, NC; cousins: Joyce Sheaffer and husband Clifford, Earl NC; Harold “Sonny” Wright and wife Judy, Blacksburg, SC, Elizabeth Brackney, Norfolk, VA,

of Greensboro. Granddaddy Bob taught them songs about being in the Army, how to fish, and took them tailgating before Panthers’ games. Bobby lived in Kings Mountain all of his life. He also was preceded in death by his second wife, Lavonda Stringfellow, of Kings Mountain.

Throughout his life, he showed kindness and compassion when he sensed unfairness. He helped launch an oral school for deaf children in Gastonia, NC, in the late 1960s, and he diligently sponsored children from foreign countries to help provide for their food and education

Two homicides in Shelby last week

Two separate shootings occurred in Shelby last week, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, as reported by the Star.

On Monday, May 6, Sarah Chambers, a 62-yearold resident, was killed outside her home on Live Oak Street when shots were fired towards a neighboring house. The Shelby Police Department reported that two 15-year-old minors have been arrested and charged with murder in con-

nection to this incident. On Friday, just before noon, the Shelby Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 600 block of E. Warren Street. The victim was taken to Atrium Health - Cleveland but was later pronounced dead. The name of the man has not been released until the family could be notified. Gaston County has 3rd confirmed 2024 rabies case

On Saturday, May 4, at approximately 09:30 a.m., Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement received a call from the 1500 block of Stanley Lucia Road in Mount Holly regarding an injured raccoon found in the family barn. There was no human contact with the raccoon, and the animal owner did not witness the family dog interact with it.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident and impounded the raccoon on Saturday, 05/04/2024. When the lab opened on

May 6, the raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. The official laboratory results were received the next day at approximately 1:30 p.m., indicating that the raccoon tested positive for rabies. As a precaution, the family dog received a rabies booster shot from a veterinarian.

A neighborhood canvass in the Stanley Lucia Road Mount Holly area to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area.

Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement also notified Gaston County Department Health and Human Services about the incident.

The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement Division stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for pets, their owners, and the community.

This is the third confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year. No further information is currently available.

Officer shoots woman in Gastonia Walmart parking lot after gunfire erupts

An incident unfolded in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter on East Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia on the morning of Thursday, May 9. The episode began with a minor traffic mishap but quickly spiraled into chaos as gunfire erupted.

According to Gastonia Police, the ordeal commenced around 6:45 am when a woman driving a black Nissan Altima collided with a median in the parking lot, causing a tree to topple, then tried to put her car into reverse. As onlookers approached to offer aid, the woman driver, with her three young children, ages

Martin Marietta plans to process and sell the limestone material as construction aggregate for use in infrastructure, nonresidential and residential construction projects. Reflecting on my days at Central School, my memories immediately take me back to my time in the gym. For many, gym time was a time of dread. But I never felt that. I enjoyed basketball and learned how to play from two great friends, Sherry Ingram and Valerie Shipp. Had it not been for them, my confidence in gym class would have been an entirely dif-

ferent experience. In seventh grade, I was about 4’ 6”, maybe, and weighed less than 75 pounds. I had a 75 percent free throw percentage back then, so I felt confident playing basketball. I was a skinny little kid who didn’t know how little she was. And for me, that gym represented an opportunity. Looking back, I know my time in the gym helped shape me into the adult I have become, and I am so grateful for my PE teachers. No matter how ridiculous it seemed, they never dis-

Looking Back

This week, Hayne Neisler has shared another significant piece of early Kings Mountain history. The 1888 Commencement Program for Kings Mountain High School is a valuable artifact that provides a glimpse into the past.

This particular graduation event is noted as the 13th Annual Session and occurred on June 21, 1888, at 10 a.m. in the Academy Building, no doubt the original Kings Mountain Military Academy that opened its doors in 1876. Principal E.W. Hall’s name is noted on the formal invitation. Capt. W.T.R. Bell had resigned after a scandal just before the school year commenced in 1887.

The next page is titled “PROGRAMME” The primary entertainment was on Wednesday Evening, June 20, but a time is not noted. Wednesday’s events began with an invocation followed by orators R.L. McNair, H.H. Hoyle, and W.P. Fulton. The Declaimers are listed as S.A. Mauney, L.E. Barnes, J.F. White, and J.H. Hall. At 2 p.m., Dr. B.F. Dixon delivered a literary address. At 8 p.m., an Alumni Meeting was held.

Marshals included R.S. Plonk, W.A. Pressley, W.D. Jenkins, C.A. Dilling, and P.U. Cansler.

This Fall, the school will begin a new life in the memories of children from our community and beyond, who will make their own memories there.

I can’t share too much. I don’t want to steal

the thunder from the new owners, who have worked hard to breathe new life into this facility. Their work is above and beyond, and I cannot wait until their open house. Even so, these new stewards have greatly respected the building and its meaning to our community. It will be the educational base for generations to come.

To the Editor:

With Albemarle’s lithium mining, the Two Kings Casino, and the influx of people moving to Charlotte, growth is inevitable in Kings Mountain. Should developers and corporations define that growth, or should current residents determine what our city becomes?

The small-town community, beautiful nature, and potential for positive growth drew me to KM. I believe growth MUST be strategic and guided by the city and its current residents rather than by outof-town developers, large corporations, or future residents. It must encompass the City’s heritage, nature, and history.

A few years ago, the City of KM created a Comprehensive Plan, UDO, and Future Land Use Map to guide building and zoning. This effort was commendable but insufficient. KM needs to take control of its growth and hold the power to shape its destiny, as long as it has a preemptive and strategic growth plan that addresses it.

“What does KM envision for its future?” Is it to be a commuter community, a city with a boutique downtown, an entertainment destination, a nature retreat, a center for lithium research, or …?

“How big will KM be in 5 years,10 years…20 years?” Should population growth be planned or allowed to grow chaotically?

“What specific infrastructure is needed to support that vision and growth?”

I believe clarity in a vision shaped by KM’s current residents - its true stakeholders, is crucial. City growth should be proactive and deliberate, considering infrastructure beyond utilities, such as the type of housing desired, the growth of quality schools and their facilities,

the preservation of KM’s natural beauty and heritage, the type and placement of medical facilities, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants etc.

Large-scale developers and corporations, particularly those detached from KM's community, prioritize profit over residents’ best interests. City Council members have delegated development negotiations to the City Manager, whose primary goal is maximizing revenue. While maximum growth is desirable from a budget perspective, specifically managing and capping growth better allows the city to define itself and its future.

I have urged City Council members to immediately halt the approval of all large-scale developments until a strategic city development plan is created to answer the above questions. I have also urged them to uncouple the rezoning of large-scale projects from the Development Agreement so input can be given on a final proposed development, not just a developer’s sales pitch. The mantra of “this is the best deal the city can make, so just vote it through” needs to end. While the City Council and Manager may fear that developers won’t come to KM if the city dictates what should be built where this just is not true. In the long run, KM’s economy and community will be much stronger and more competitive than if developers buy up land and tell the city what they are going to build based on their high profit margins.

On the bright side, we can be comforted that future generations who love what this school will become will one day have their own stories to share, memories to cherish, and legacies to record in the history books of Gaston Christian School—East Cleveland. I am delighted that the property continues as a

school, a place of learning for students, on and off the court. I am glad the educators will build a strong foundation for their students to grow as they go into the world. When you are 21 your whole life is before you. You can’t imagine the end of life. One day if you are fortunate, you wake up to your retirement years and wonder, “Where did the time go?” Life is like graduation. We graduate from school and eventually we graduate from life. We would never want to spend eternity in high school or college, or maybe we would. It all depends on your perspective and how the school era goes for you. For some it’s a great time and for others they are ready to move on. We won’t spend eternity in this world.

We might have a lot of years but eventually we graduate and move on to another level. Hopefully your level will brighter. No one wants to graduate to a lower level. May is a great month as we will soon celebrate Memorial Day. Recognize and remember the many who gave it all for us to enjoy this great country. So many have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. As we approach Memorial Day, let’s hope and pray that our country can always seek peace and avoid the slaughter of our young men and women. Be good to those you know in active service as they face many daily challenges. May is a beautiful month because of all the green leaves on the trees and beautiful flowers. Take time to enjoy the landscape of May. Finally, May is a great month because the May primary is over. I’m sick and

tired of political ads. Oh, I realize it’s not over. There is plenty more to come but at least a good number of those running are now done and that will stop a lot of the political ads. My cell phone buzzes for about an hour each evening with political text messages. I don’t know how they got my phone number but I hear from everybody running for President of the United States to local politicians running for dog catcher. Hopefully, we will all get a brief break from the insanity. May has come and soon will go. Take it easy and take it slow. Embrace each day and the good people you know. June will soon come we hope and it will be sunny and bright. We will have long days and star filled nights. But, right now take hold of May and enjoy each day. Find time to soak it all in as it will soon fade away.

A wrong number for the right person

Around 2007, a Turkish man named Azad answered his phone while working on a political assignment. After he answered the phone call, the man on the other end of the line rapidly realized he called the wrong person. He thought he called a different Azad to discuss their faith. However, although Azad believed that God existed, he had very little knowledge about God otherwise.

After living in Eastern Turkey

for most of his life, Azad couldn’t resist his intrigue about what this man might share. So he agreed to meet him. The man later gave Azad a Bible and God planted a seed in the man’s heart as he read the Scriptures. Azad eventually asked him to baptize him knowing trouble might come his way.

Sure enough, the authorities arrested Azad and he spent years in prison. During his prison time, he shared the Gospel with others and gave away many Bibles. God used Azad’s faithfulness in prison to prepare him to serve outside his prison cell.

Today, Azad faithfully serves a small gathering of Kurdish believers in Eastern Turkey. Each day he knows that he faces death, imprisonment, or torture. But God

strengthened him during his days in prison. He no longer fears persecution.

As I read about Azad, I thought about how different we would live in Kings Mountain if we knew each Bible reading, baptism, outreach, or conversation could be our last.

I’m not sure how I would act.

I’d like to think that I would risk it all to serve those in need. I’d like to believe we would prioritize the hurting even if someone threatened us. But would we?

This Easter, like all Easter Sundays, we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave. We celebrated that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Rom 5:8). Even though we all sin (Rom 3:23), fall short of God’s glory, and have earned death (Rom

6:23), Jesus still gave His life for us so that we could have eternal life!

Here in Cleveland County you may not encounter resistance from authorities when you share your faith. I doubt anyone will incarcerate you because you shared the Gospel. You can even buy as many Bibles as you like without fear.

Jesus went to the cross. Paul wrote letters from prison. Azad risked it all and continues to do so.

Will you risk a few minutes to read your Bible or talk to someone new? You could also set a goal of worshipping in a local church each week in the month of April.

Pray for Azad. Then let’s follow his example.

Free Family Fun on May 18th

CCHD to host Summer Days, Healthy Ways event

The Cleveland County Health Department will host a Summer Days, Healthy Ways event on Saturday, May 18th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on its campus at 200 S Post Rd, Shelby. Summer Days, Healthy Ways will be an exciting, family-friendly event filled with inflatables, minigolf, face painting, balloon art, sweet treats, free food, giveaways, raffles, and more. The raffle will include a free Apple watch and a kid’s bike. 100 children’s bike helmets will also be available for free.

Many community-based organizations will be present to share information and provide education on local resources to help keep children and families healthy this summer and beyond.

“By hosting this event, we hope to accomplish several things,” said DeShay Oliver, Deputy Health Director for the Cleveland County Health Department. “First, we hope to provide an opportunity for families to get out, get active, and spend quality time together affordably. Second, we hope to help community

members learn more about the many local health-related resources that are available. Last, we hope to bring community members together on our campus so they can see how nice our facility is and learn more about what we offer. Friends, Not Foes: Snakes of the Carolinas at The Schiele

After months of planning and construction, The Schiele Museum of Natural History will soon unveil its newest exhibit - Friends, Not Foes: Snakes of the Carolinas. Visitors are invited to meet the snakes and tour their habitats during Reptile and Amphibian Day on Saturday, May 18, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The museum will offer hands-on activities, special presentations, and interactions with various live reptiles and amphibians along with the exhibit’s grand opening.

Just as its name implies, The Schiele’s new exhibit will showcase snakes native to the Carolinas. A DeKay’s brown snake, a corn snake, a pine snake, and an eastern king snake are just a few that will be on display.

If the thought of coming face-to-fang with a snake is terrifying, museum staff can understand. During educational presentations, Morgan Lyons, The Schiele’s Head of Living Collections, regularly talks to apprehensive museum visitors about snakes. “Snakes are not as scary as they seem,” she says. “They are more beneficial than harmful, for the environment and for people too!” The new exhibit will emphasize the

On May 8, 2024, Cleveland Community College held a pinning ceremony for its first class of Associate Degree Nursing graduates. Sixty graduates were pinned—of those, four had already passed the National Council Licensure Examination and officially become registered nurses. The ceremony featured a welcome from CCC President Dr. Jason Hurst, in

which he told graduates, “Starting this program was important to us because our community needs and deserves highly qualified nurses who will care for us and our families. I can’t emphasize enough how exciting it is to be congratulating our very first Associate Degree Nursing graduates.”

During the ceremony two students were recognized for outstanding accomplish-

ments. Summer Mosteller was presented with the Betty Garrison award, which recognizes students who exemplify qualities such as excellence in patient care and advocacy, a good sense of humor, and genuine kindness toward others. Teresa Vasquez was selected by the nursing faculty to receive the Outstanding Student award. She was recognized for being a positive role model, her initiative, and her pursuit of excellence in the classroom, lab, and clinical settings.

Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of Academic Affairs, closed the ceremony by reminding graduates that they have chosen a noble profession that will challenge them. “We are proud of each of you, and we know that your efforts to care for us will make our community healthier.”

This is the first class to graduate since CCC announced in 2021 that it was withdrawing from the Foothills Nursing Consortium to create a standalone Associate Degree Nursing program. Although the Consortium provided a way for the members to share resources, it limited each school to a small number of seats in each class. As the need for nurses has continued to increase in our community it has become imperative that CCC be able to accept more students.

“I AM WOMAN” exhibit winners announced at Southern Arts Society

Winners were announced Saturday May 11, at the reception for the “I Am Woman” art exhibit and competition at Southern Arts Society (SASi) in Kings Mountain. “I Am Woman” is an exhibit for artwork that represents the feminine or female experience. This is a judged show with first, second and third place prizes along with four merit awards. Artists from around the region have created works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, sculpture, textiles, paper, and mixed media to interpret their view of “I Am Woman”.

Judging this year’s show was Susan Carlisle Bell, former Professor of Art at Gardner Webb University. Ms. Bell made initial comments about judging the show “overall, I chose works that best conveyed the theme I am Woman. I was delighted to see a wide variety of mediums used with such skill.”

First Place went to Todd Baxter of Rock Hill, SC, for his colored pencil piece “Patterns.

Second Place went to Beth Oczkowski of Hickory for her work in paper “Grace”

Ms. Bell selected the following awards with comments. First Place went to Todd Baxter of Rock Hill, SC, for his colored pencil piece “Patterns”. Ms. Bell said “There is a very feminine and wistful quality to this piece. The repeating curves of the body, couch, jewelry, and patterns reiterate the theme of woman. The strong diagonal of the pose and her upward gaze is a wonderful counterbalance. This piece is exquisite in its handling of the medium – the vertical marks while varying in pressure and hue are so interwoven as to give a unified surface. There are no hard shadows or shapes on the figure. Notice the subtlety of the hand in particular.”

Second Place went to Beth Oczkowski of Hickory for her work in paper “Grace”. Ms. Bell said “The quiet grace and inner strength of this figure is reminiscent of the Madonna of the Italian Renaissance. To achieve the modelling of the face through different values, hues, and irregular paper quilling is quite remarkable. Never have I seen paper sculpture or quilling (strips of paper rolled, shaped, glued together) raised to such a fine art. The artist has been able to convey the texture of the hair, skin, and fabrics as well as eyes that are alive.”

Sara Dame Setzer was awarded Third Place for her oil painting “Drawing at Bronco’s”. Ms. Bell remarked “Setzer’s

composition of women artists “en pleine aire” is unified by color and shape. The open area of the left front is balanced by the asymmetrical grouping of figures. Notice how change in scale and the linear perspective of the grass border ‘leads the eye into the background’. The blue shadows not only “ground” the figures but connect one to the next.”

Four people were selected for Merit Awards. Marygrace Bianco of Bessemer City, for her mixed media sculpture “Unbound Heart”; Janice Booth of Gastonia, for her gouache piece “Daydream”; Shirley Brutko of Kings Mountain for her watercolor “I Got In Mommy’s Makeup”; and Patricia Pietersen of River Hills, for her photography “Contemplation”.

The “I AM WOMAN” exhibit will be on view in the galleries of Southern Arts Society through June 7, 2024. Artwork in the exhibit is available for sale. Former Kings Mountain High School and The Citadel football standout Lyn Cheshire will be inducted into the Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame Saturday at Central Methodist Church.

We had some really good players on the line like Jim Medlin, Hubert McGinnis, Jim Cloninger, Richard White, Steve Grigg and George Plonk and we had (quarterback) Pat Murphy and (running back) Steve Baker in the backfield. We came out of the games when we had leads because we didn’t want to embarrass anybody.”

In those days – much like now – the Mountaineers scheduled some of the toughest teams around. The Southwestern Conference was tough enough with teams like Shelby, Lincolnton and Belmont but before

“The toughest game I remember was against Mooresville my junior year,” Cheshire noted. “They were kind of dominant. They were so fast and hit so hard it took us a while to pick up the speed of the game. But we beat them. It was a close game (12-7) that made us better going on.”

He said one of the Southwestern Conference games he best remembers was the championship game against Shelby in 1963 when the teams tied and played the first “sudden death” overtime in the Western North Carolina High School Athletic Association. At that time, the game went into the books as a tie but the team that won the overtime represented the conference in the association playoffs.

“We had a lot of good players on those teams,” Cheshire noted. “Some of them were Ronnie Rhea, Pat Hord, Pete Putnam, Louis Cook, Richard Gold, Jim Medlin and Steve Baker. We had a lot of guys that played their role. Most

After graduating KMHS, Cheshire went to The Citadel where he was recommended to the coaching staff by Kings Mountain native and The Citadel assistant coach, Pride Ratteree.

“I started as a freshman and sophomore,” he recalled. “We had good teams. Red Parker was the head coach my sophomore year. He had a bunch of coaches that came with him from Arkansas.”

After his sophomore year, Cheshire said he knew he wanted to study medicine so he went to UNC Chapel Hill to finish his undergraduate work. He played rugby there. He coached football and track at Cherryville High School from 1969 through 1971 and then worked several years at his family’s Patterson Oil Company before going to Physician’s Assistant school. “I always had that in the back of my mind,” he said.

He has been a physician’s assistant for 40 years. He started out at Cleco in

“Football and track were pretty much it for me in high school,” Cheshire said. “I threw the discus and shot. We didn’t have a lot of football equipment in our day – just a weight bench down in the basement of the gym at Central School. We had a seven-man sled and a two-man sled and we’d go one-on-one with the offense against the defense. We went hard every day.

“My two years at The Citadel were very good,” he said. “We played teams like West Virginia, Clemson, Furman and South Carolina. It was a tough schedule.”

Cheshire will be inducted into the Hall of Fame by his high school teammate and good friend, Steve Baker.

“I’m truly honored and very proud,” he said. “Our 1964 team is in it. I never expected to go in as an individual. That team made us all better. We had 26 lettermen in 1964 and were 191-1 in ’63 and ’64. Those were two great years.”

KM softball still rolling in state playoffs

Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team was to host Fred T. Foard last night in the third round of the state 3A playoffs.

The winner will advance to meet the winner of the East Rowan-Rockingham County game to see who goes on to play for the Western championship and a chance to go to the NCHSAA championship final four.

The Lady Mountaineers opened state tournament action last Tuesday at home with an 8-0 victory over Southern Guilford.

Kayla McSwain drove in five runs on three hits to

lead the plate attack.

Maddie Huffman hurled a no-hitter and struck out 15 over the seven innings to get the win on the mound.

Kali Weaver went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Cheyanne Reynolds and Kandance Whitaker also contributed hits for the Lady Mountaineers. They followed that Friday night with a 5-2 victory over Canton Pisgah. Huffman had another great pitching performance, giving up just five hits and one earned run. She did not walk a batter over her seven innings of work.

Huffman also went over

the 200 strikeout mark for this season.

Kings Mountain got on the board in the bottom of the first when McSwain’s double scored Huffman from first for a 1-0 lead. The same duo produced the second run of the game on McSwain’s second double.

Whitaker led the hitting with 2-for-3 and two runs batted in. McSwain, Cheyanne Reynolds and Whitaker all collected multiple hits for the Lady Mountaineers who improved their season record to 20-0.

KM golfers finish third in 3A Western Regional

High’s golf team finished third out of 13 teams in the 3A Western Regional Tournament last week at Springdale Resort in Canton and was playing in the 3A state championship tournament Monday and Tuesday at Longleaf Golf Club in Southern Pines.

Stuart Cramer won the Western championship with a 299 score. North Lincoln edged Kings Mountain 308-309 to take second place. Will Spicer led the Mountaineers with a 72. Josh Gillespie shot 75, Caleb Marr 79, Thomas Spicer 83 and Baylor Benton 87. Fred T. Foard and Freedom tied for fourth with 315 scores and Pisgah and Crest tied for sixth at 316. East Lincoln and Franklin shot 319 followed by South Point 339, Tuscola 349, AC Reynolds 373 and Enka 380.

Gaston College holds 59th Commencement ceremony

The 59th Commencement ceremony for Gaston College was held on Friday, May 10, 2024, at CaroMont Health Park in Gastonia, North Carolina.

The 1,225 graduates of the Gaston College Class of 2024 were honored at the ceremony. This is the largest graduating class in the college’s nearly 60year history. The graduates received credentials, diplomas, or associate degrees from 69 curriculum programs. Approximately 650 graduates were recognized individually as they walked across the stage during the Presentation of Candidates.

Dr. John Hauser, President of Gaston College, welcomed attendees and congratulated the graduates, saying, “All of today’s graduates have earned distinction through their hard work and commitment to reaching their goals. Graduates, we join your family and friends in celebrating your accomplishments, and we commend you on your attainment.”

In addressing the Class of 2024, Dr. Hauser said, “Your time as a student at Gaston has been filled with moments. Some of those moments were amazing, joyous, and fun. Others were disappointing, hard, and sometimes even sad. You’ve had small moments, big moments, and I know many of you have experienced life-changing moments during your time here. KMHS wins Big South Wells Fargo Cup

It’s incredible that we’re approaching the final weeks of school! I wanted to share some updates and congratulate all our teams, student athletes, and coaches on another successful season. We are currently finishing post season play for the spring sports. Some more congrats could possibly be on the way but I wanted to announce the winning of the Big South Wells Fargo Cup. The Wells Fargo Conference Cup award is a companion to the statewide Wells Fargo State Cup. The Conference Cup is based on regular season performances within conference play and is designed to recognize the

closed the gap on South Point. Baseball, softball, and women's soccer went over to Crest on the last night of conference play and won all three, positioning us to win the conference cup by a narrow 1.5 points margin. This marks our 12th cup in school history and 7th in the last decade.

The City Council of the City of Kings Mountain will conduct a public hearing, in accordance with NCGS 158-7.1(c) to solicit public input regarding amendments to an Economic Development Incentive Agreement previously authorized by City Council at their regular meeting of April 11, 2024, in support of an economic development recruitment project entitled Project Ball. The public hearing will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall located at 101 W. Gold Street, Kings Mountain, North Carolina on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 beginning at 6:00 pm. The general public will have the opportunity to make comments regarding the proposed Incentive Agreement during the public hearing portion of the meeting.

The proposed amended three-year incentive grant is based upon new investment in real and personal property with a potential taxable value equal to $9,500,000. The value of the incentive will be based upon the actual assessed value of the new investment as appraised by the Cleveland County Tax Office and may vary each year depending upon the depreciation schedule and the timing of the investments. The incentive grant would be paid in three (3) annual payments and is contemplated to equal approximately $29,856.00 over the term of the agreement. This is a performance-based grant and incentive payments are contingent upon Project Ball successfully meeting the performance goals as detailed in the amended Incentive Agreement. The amount of City of Kings Mountain property tax that will be billed to the company for the capital investment in real and personal property associated with Project Ball will exceed the amount proposed to be paid out by the City as an incentive grant for this project. Additionally, City Council may consider authorization of an application to the NC Building Reuse Program in an amount up to $500,000 in support of Project Ball. This application will require a 5% local cash match which may be derived from the amended three-year local incentive contemplated.

The City of Kings Mountain believes Project Ball provides benefits to the City on the basis of new job creation, average annual salary, and new capital investment. Project Ball will have a positive impact on the City’s corporate tax base and further ensure stability for the local economy. The proposed grant recipient acknowledges that the incentive grant, if awarded by City Council, will serve as inducement to make the indicated capital investment in the City of Kings Mountain. The source of funding for the proposed grant is general fund revenues.

Healthy Travel Tips for Older Travelers

Dear Savvy Senior, What tips can you offer retirees with health issues who are planning some trips? We’ve been looking forward to traveling again after staying home the past few years, but my husband has a heart condition and some back problems that worry me. Concerned Wife

Dear Concerned, A dream vacation can turn into a real nightmare if you get ill or injured while you’re away and aren’t prepared. Before setting out, here are some tips to help ensure a safe and healthy trip for you and your husband.

Get prepared: Before you go, talk with your doctor about your travel itinerary and what precautions you need to take before traveling. You should also have your doctor’s contact information with you when you travel, as well as a list of the medications you’re taking in case you need emergency medical care while you’re away.

It’s also a smart idea to locate health clinics or urgent care facilities near the areas you’re visiting. Your hotel can help you with this or a simple internet

search can identify nearby health care services. If you’re traveling abroad, the U.S. consulate or embassy in the countries you’re visiting (go to step.state. gov to enroll your trip) is a good place to get a referral. Or use the International Society of Travel Medicine’s directory at ISTM.org.

If you’re traveling outside the U.S., you also need to find out the health conditions of the country you’re visiting and what, if any, vaccinations and/ or preventative medications are recommended. See CDC.gov/travel or call 800-232-4636 to get this information.

Check your insurance: If you have private health insurance or a Medicare Advantage plan through an HMO or PPO that covers in-network doctors only, check your plan to find out what’s covered if you need medical care when traveling outside your geographic area.

Beneficiaries that have original Medicare are covered everywhere in the U.S. But if you’re traveling abroad, you won’t be covered outside the U.S. and its territories except in rare circumstances, although some Medicare Advantage plans and some Medigap

supplemental policies do provide limited coverage. Most private health plans don’t pay health care costs outside the U.S. either. Be sure to check.

Many retirees traveling abroad purchase travel insurance with medical coverage, which may cover expenses if you cancel the trip, need to be treated while traveling or need to be evacuated for medical care. Make sure the policy will also cover your preexisting medical conditions. To shop and compare policies visit TravelInsurance.com, InsureMyTrip.com or SquareMouth. com.

Organize your medications: Make sure you have a sufficient supply of medications to last the entire trip.

If traveling by air, you need to pack your medicine in your carry-on bag, so if your checked luggage gets lost or misdirected you won’t be without. It’s best to keep your medications in their original containers to get through airport security without delays. It’s also a good idea to bring along a note from your doctor that explains why you take these medications, especially if syringes or other medical supplies are involved.

For airport security requirements visit TSA.gov – click on “Disabilities and Medical Conditions.” You can also call TSA Cares at 855-787-2227 prior to traveling with questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at the security checkpoint.

Maximize technology: Keep a list of your medications and other important health and medical information handy on your smartphone so you can easily access and share it with emergency health care providers when you’re traveling. Some good apps that can help with this are Backpack Health (BackpackHealth.com) and Capzule (Capzule.com).
