City of Kings Mountain kicked-off the Streetscape Project on April 11, but demolition will not begin until April 18. A Streetscape meeting held by the city introduced the contractor and discussed phasing and sequencing for Phase 2A, specifically the work being done between April 11 and the end of July. Between now and April 18, Greene Building Construction will place a work trailer on the city owned parking lot between the old Fulton’s Department Store and Martin’s Electric, according to Nick Hendricks. Richard Flowe, of N-Focus, explained that the initial phase will address the area of West Mountain Street between Battleground and Piedmont Avenues. Construction

will also occur along Cherokee Street from the City’s parking lot entrance going North, through the intersection with Mountain Street, and continuing behind the police station. Construction will stop at the last building on the left behind UnCommon Artisans. The traffic signal at Cherokee and Mountain Street will be decommissioned and the intersection will become a 4-way stop. Project Manager Mike Loveless of Greene Building Construction explained that his company has done work like this before as the contractor for City of Shelby’s Washington Streetscape. The firm also specializes in hospitals, including projects for Atrium Health, as well as industrial projects. According to Loveless, the first week of the project

will include underground marking, setting up the work trailer, fencing the area, and other related work before demolition. The roads will close on April 18 between Battleground Avenue and Cherokee Street. Initial demolition will begin at Battleground Avenue and move East toward Cherokee Street. Another road closure includes Cherokee Street behind the Police Department down to the public parking lot. Near Dellinger’s Jewel Shop, they will try keep access to that parking open, and there is significant storm water and electrical work that needs to be done in that area. When Cherokee Street opens in July, it will be a one-way street from Mountain Street down to the public parking lot. However, it will See STREETSCAPE, Page4A

These deputies work in the communities of Cleveland County everyday fighting crime, problem solving through community policing, assisting community leaders in organizing community watches, and many other hats. The drugs they seized had an approximate street value of $700.000.00. I have no doubt

that these deputies stopped these drugs from ending up on our community’s streets. These drugs were not on our interstates; they were being trafficked on our community roads,” said Sheriff Norman. “The Sheriff’s Office will continue to make drug investigations a high priority,” Sheriff Alan Norman said. “Statistics have shown for years that drug use leads to other crimes, in particular breaking and entering and larcenies, where users have to steal to fund their habit.” "The violence associated with drug dealing is also a huge concern of mine, and those dealers who possess guns during drug transactions will be a very high priority.” The Sheriff’s Office takes complaints of drug sales very seriously, Norman said, and requests that anyone with information on drug dealers in their neighborhood contact the Vice/ Narcotics Division at 704-4844987.

Once we mill the road and replace the pavement, we’ll open the road.” David Stone of StoneWright Realty, Inc. asked if owners might have access to

the road for deliveries of construction materials. In reply, Loveless said, “We will work with owners who need access to their buildings for deliveries.” The project manager will be in the trailer every day, and people can coordinate with him. Businesses, like ScissorSmith & Co. Salon, at the corner of West Mountain and Cherokee may have a bigger challenge due to their parking, specifically when new curbing is going in, according to Richard Flowe. There may be times when access may be difficult due to project work and coordination will need to happen. Cosmetologist Natalie Newsome shared her concern for elderly customers with walkers and wheelchairs regarding accessibility. She explained, “There are women that need their hair done who can’t use steps.” Nick Hendricks offered, “We’ll need to

sit down and discuss. It may be that we add a temporary ramp back there.” The Salon is open long hours sometimes, often from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m., according to Newsome. Nick Hendricks suggested that the salon coordinate with the Project Manager. Director of the Tourism Development Authority, Ellis Noell, asked if there were plans for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations downtown? Hendricks replied, “We are considering that.” Flowe added, “Not on the public street, right now. But we are evaluating them as far as the project.” Flowe thanked those who attended, saying “On behalf of the city, I want to extend my appreciation for your tolerance. It would need to be timely, because I understand project management and how quickly those schedules do change.” Loveless asked owners to share their email addresses so he can communicate directly with them on updates and changes in a mass communication. Hendrick added that it would be on the city website as project updates. Falls added that those who are working in downtown, or have buildings being worked on, need a weekly or daily update, or notices as changes

occur. Loveless then clarified that communications should go directly to the city and the city would communicate with Greene Building Construction. Direct communication wouldn’t occur directly with them unless it was regarding temporary ramps, or similar challenges. Hendricks said, “I don’t want to sugar coat it. Once they block this road (in Phase I), it’s going to be a disaster area. It’s going to be dug up piles of dirt.” He explained, “It is going to be noisy, with heavy machinery, jack hammers and backhoes. It is not going to be pleasant.” “But this is something we’ve asked for 10 or 15years,” Falls added. Newsome agreed saying, “The end result is exciting.” Before closing, Loveless shared that the typical hours of construction will be Monday through Friday, 7-7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

the blood of Christ “poured out for many for forgiveness of sins” (Mt 26:28). Only through the blood of Christ are we forgiven and cleansed from our sins. So we praise God that “the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin” (1 Jn 1:5). And we gratefully sing, “Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.” Christ also died to declare us right with God. Because of sin, we stood condemned before God; because of the cross, we stand justified before God. We had sinned and totally missed the mark of God, but now we have been “justified as a gift by His grace” (Rom 3:23–24). Now through faith in Christ, we have been “justified by His blood” (Rom 5:9). Now, our record is “Just-As-IfWe-Had-Never-Sinned.”

Why Christ Died? “Oh, the wonderful cross!” That’s what we—along with Christians around the world— e x c l a i m ! Steve Taylor Pastor And with Bethlehem good reason. For on Baptist Church the cross, “Christ died for our sins” (1 Cor 15:3). We look around us and within us and say, “How mighty and massive is the devastation of sin!” Yet we gaze at the cross and say, “How marvelous and powerful is the cross of Christ!” We look around us

and see so many people mindless of the cross and blinded to its power. Yet we say with Paul, “The word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor 1:18). Indeed, the death of Christ dealt the death blow to sin. Here are a few of the many reasons why: Christ died to defeat the devil. Jesus appeared “to destroy the works of the devil.” The pernicious work of the devil is to sin (he “has sinned from the beginning”) and to entice people to sin (1 Jn 3:8). But the powerful work

of Christ was to crush the devil, the serpent of old, on his head (Gen 3:15). So before His death on the cross, Jesus declared, “Now the ruler of this world [the devil] will be cast out” (Jn 12:31). Christ also died to forgive our sins. The cup we Christians partake of during the Lord’s Supper represents

Wednesday, April 13, 2022 How did we get that perfect record? A great exchange took place on the cross. God “made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Cor 5:21). Christ took our record of disobedience and unrighteousness upon Himself and gave us His record of perfect obedience and righteousness. Christ also died to give us eternal life. We all have been fatally bitten by sin, but God gives life to all who look to and believe in the crucified Christ! In the wilderness, the sinful Israelites were dying from the bite of serpents. God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it up on a pole. Miraculously, everyone who looked at it lived!

And all who look to Christ will live. For Jesus said, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; that whoever believes may in Him have eternal life” (Jn 3:14–15). Have you believed in the crucified Christ? Wonderfully, everyone who looks to and believes in Christ receives God’s gift of eternal life! Knowing these reasons why Christ died stirs us to sing anew these lyrics of Isaac Watts, When I survey the wondrous Cross On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain, I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride.

KM Mountaineers’ bats come alive, pound South Point Raiders 9-2 KM rallies for 5-1 win

South Point grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Kings Mountain came back for a big 9-2 win over the Red Raiders in a Big South 3A Conference game Wednesday night at Lancaster Field. Starter Zane Brockman and relief pitcher Wyatt Davis held the Raiders to just four hits and sent nine men back to the dugout via the strikeout route while the Mountaineers were having their best hitting night so far this spring. Brockman gave

up just three hits and fanned seven in six innings of work. Davis gave up a hit and struck out two in the seventh. Things didn’t look good for the Mountaineers in the top of the first inning as the Red Raiders took advantage of two walks and a single by Carson Shell to go up 1-0. But things changed quickly. Kenyon Moore led off the KM first with a walk, Jacob Hamrick followed with a single, and after a passed ball moved both runners up Brockman and Cole Irby pro-

duced back-to-back RBI singles to put the Mountaineers on top for good, 2-1. Kings Mountain really got going in the bottom of the second, scoring four more runs on five hits to take a 6-1 lead and put the game out of the Raiders’ reach. The Mountaineers’ first three batters – Maddox Brown, Colton Mayes and Charlie Melton – singled to load the bases. Jackson Toney ripped a double to right-center to make it 4-1, and Moore followed with See BATS, Page 2B

The late New York Yankee great Yogi Berra said it, and it’s still true today: “It ain’t over til it’s over.” South Point’s Red Raiders had a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the seventh inning but the Mountaineers came back for a 5-1 victory to remain in a tie for first place in

With Jacob Hamrick on second after a walk and stolen base, Peyton Fisher had two strikes on him but ripped a triple to the gap in right-center to tie the game at 1-all. Kings Mountain struck for four more runs to put the win in the bag. After Hunter Ellis reached on an

error, Jack Toney walked and Kenyon Moore singled to left to drive home Charlie Melton, who was running for Ellis. Hamrick bunted for a single and an error put the Mountaineers up 3-1. The Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Saturday, May 7 at 6 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church. Tickets are available from members of the Hall of Fame committee and at Ingram’s Barber Shop in downtown Kings Mountain. Five former Kings Mountain High athletes will be honored, including the late Jim Cloninger, Sheryl Goode, Mariko Feemster, Tony Young and Tandra Leftwich. Cloninger was a standout end and punter on Kings Mountain High’s undefeated Southwestern Conference football team in 1964. He was All-State and played in the prestigious Boys Town all-star game. He went on to play at Appalachian State where he broke the starting lineup as a freshman end and punter. Goode was an All-Conference basketball player at KMHS in 1981 and helped lead the team to its best re-

cord in school history at that time. She went on to play at Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte and scored 428 points with 314 rebounds in 91 games. She helped lead the team to a 17-9 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament in 1985. Feemster was one of five great offensive linemen on Ron Massey’s 1998 football team that won the Southwestern Conference and Western Regional championships and to this day is the only KMHS football team to play for a state championship. Feemster earned a scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he gained significant playing time as a freshman before suffering a career-ending injury. Leftwich was a threeyear All-Conference performer in softball, volleyball and swimming at KMHS and was the NCHSAA state diving champion in 1992. She went on to Gardner-Webb University See FAME, Page 2B

Bouldin claims Strike King co-angler top spot On Saturday, April 2, Kings Mountain angler, Jeremy Bouldin, won his first Major League Fishing event on Dale Hollow Lake on the Tennessee / Kentucky boarder, and took home a prize valued at $41,000. Bouldin is the son of Brian Bouldin and Susan Harmon, and the grandson of Clint and Barbara Bouldin, all of Kings Mountain. His stepfather, Les Waller, and Girlfriend Savannah Ray were also there to see Jeremy weigh-in and take the co-angler top prize. Major League Fishing shared the following story in a press release. After three days of fishing, the dust settled for the Strike King co-angler field at the Toyota Series Presented by A.R.E. Central Division event on Dale Hollow Lake and Jeremy Bouldin found himself stunned and elated to be sitting atop the leaderboard. The Kings Mountain, N.C., angler finished with 35 pounds, 12 ounces and took home the top prize package of Phoenix boat and cash worth a total of $41,000. “I feel awesome, this is amazing,” said Bouldin. “I never would have dreamed this would happen this week. I mean I fish to win, but never expected win.” Bouldin’s preparation leading up to the week’s event was critical for him to survive and advance to the final day of competition. “[Practice] went good the last day, I think that really

helped,” said Bouldin. “I did [what I found] in practice the first and second day.” Bouldin noted that Saturday called for adjustments when faced with the reality that is the forward-facing sonar craze. “Today was a completely different ballgame, more out deep with LiveScope,” he said, shouting out his final day pairing of Isaac Peavyhouse for a small, but important assist in collecting his bag. “The last two days I was fishing an A-rig over trees. “He was awesome, and he left his back graph on 2D for me. So, I just went old-school and when I’d see one on it then me make a drop to it and catch it.” It worked out to the tune of 13-11, launching him from fifth to first when the scale finally closed. Bouldin, who turned 27 just a day prior to the event, was able to lock down victory as a late birthday gift to himself. He has plans to fish the final stop of the Central Division, as it ensures him a berth to the Toyota Series Championship and more opportunity to learn. “I’ve never been to any of the other lakes on the schedules beside [Chickamauga],” Bouldin said. “I want to fish as a boater (eventually), so I figure this was the best way to learn these lakes without getting my teeth kicked in too badly.” No worries on that front here, as this time Bouldin did the kicking.

Congratulations

the foundation for future success, and it’s great to see how these grants not only help care for our children but help their parents get and keep jobs.” “The Week of the Young Child is every week for North Carolina’s early care and learning teachers,” said Dr. Kristi Snuggs, Deputy Director of the NCDHHS Division of Child Development and Early Education. “Supporting the early childhood teachers who help families ensure that children are prepared for success in school and life is

a top priority of the department. That’s why the Child Care Stabilization Grants are so important – to keep early care and learning teachers in the profession and keep child care accessible for families.” In October 2021, Governor Cooper announced the launch of the North Carolina Child Care Stabilization Grants, a historic, federal $805 million investment in the state’s early care and learning programs. Since the launch of the program, the North Carolina Department of Health and

Human Services has distributed over $340 million to more than 4,000 child care centers across the state. The application for stabilization grants is open and conducted on a rolling basis. Ninety percent of eligible child care programs have applied for and received Stabilization Grants. Of those programs that have received Stabilization Grants, 92% of the programs have used the funding as compensation support for their workforce. Grants have been distributed

in 99 counties. The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration to highlight the needs of young children and their families and recognize early childhood programs and services. Governor Cooper has proclaimed April 2022 as Month of the Young Child and April 2-8, 2022 as Week of the Young Child. history, Seth had his eyes set on a different path. Seth dreamed that one day he would be holding a microphone on TV and talking about his favorite thing – sports. Over the years that dream never faded, and to reach his goals Seth enrolled at Gaston College to study Broadcasting and Production Technology. Things have come full circle for Seth as he is now the voice of the Gaston College Rhinos Baseball team as the Public Address Announcer at the newly renovated Sims Legion

Park in Gastonia, where the team plays its home games. “The team has had an incredible first season so far. They hit the ball well and seem like a very well-rounded group,” said Seth. “I’m hoping they can build on this momentum for the rest of the season.” Seth hit the ground running to cover as many local sports teams as possible after graduating from Gaston College in 2015. To get his feet wet, he covered high school sports while working for a local radio station that covered

Page 7B Gaston, Lincoln, and Cleveland counties. From there he went on to work for Limestone University and still serves as their Public Address Announcer. At Limestone, Seth has had the opportunity to give play-byplay and color commentary for the basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer teams. An avid sports fan who cannot seem to get enough, Seth also works in his spare time for a radio station in Rock Hill, S.C., to cover games during the high school football season. This new job with the Rhinos certainly is not Seth’s first time living out his dreams, but

he says it has been his biggest challenge to date. He credits Gaston College and his instructors in the Broadcasting and Production Technology program for helping him get to this point in his career. He says Kate Carmody, instructor, and program coordinator, taught him everything he knows about broadcast production and what goes on behind the scenes. “I was a little bit nervous because, although I’ve done this before, when it's your alma mater it hits a little bit different,” said Seth. “You have your teachers there that vouch for you and people welcome you
