North Carolina House passes resolution supporting Ukraine On Thursday, March 10, the North Carolina House approved HR 981, a resolution expressing support for Ukraine as its people fight for freedom, and urging Congress to increase domestic energy production. North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore said, “We stand firmly with the Ukrainian people as they fight to defend their country from Russian aggression. As millions of refugees flee and hundreds of civilians have been slaughtered, it is crucial that civilized nations of the world stand
with them now.” H e continued, “Furthermore, it’s time for our leaders TIM MOORE in Congress and in the White House to reverse course on unnecessarily limiting our production of energy. We must increase our domestic energy production to strengthen our security here at home.”

On Friday, March 11, smoke rose adjacent to I-85 North, as The Keith Corporation prepares the land for the upcoming construction of Kings Mountain Corporate Center on Canterbury Road. The brownish white smoke bellowed into the air, as remaining debris on the property was gathered into piles and set ablaze. This work is part of the process for Keith Corporation to begin construction on a speculative industrial building of nearly 1.3 million square feet in Kings Mountain. It is the largest spec building in Cleveland County, North Carolina, and the southeast. Kings Mountain Corporate Center is a 164acre, master-planned,
business park in Kings Mountain. The business park has extensive I-85 frontage with access to the interstate by two interchanges. And with Charlotte Douglas International Airport just twenty-six miles away via I-85, the location is ideal for many large companies. “We appreciate City of Kings Mountain’s and Gaston County’s incentive grants, which will help draw potential tenants to this property,” said Justin Curis, Vice President, Industrial Development for The Keith Corporation. “Our intention for this property is for one company to occupy. We anticipate completion at the end of 2022, with a new tenant operational during the first quarter of 2023.”

Biscuitville doing a brisk business since opening By Loretta Cozart Biscuitville held its Grand Opening on March 1, and traffic around the building has been busy since. A mini-traffic jam stretched .2 miles, or 1,056 feet, with cars at a stop from the restaurant all the way back to Los Tarascos Restaurant that makes the area difficult to navigate some mornings. While the line appeared long, staff quickly delivered breakfasts to waiting customers. Online, customers commented that their entire wait took about 15 minutes.

WINSTON SALEM, NC – When one sits down to write an obituary, one’s first thought is to look at a typical write-up, and use that as an example. But this was no typical man. Andrzej Bogdan Milewski was born on August 11, 1924 – the son Alfred, a decorated Polish army officer-turned-politician and Sabina, a dedicated, brave mother. His childhood on the family farm in Bagrowo, Poland was idyllic, but war was never far. On February 10, 1940, Andrzej and his mother, sister, and brother were deported to Siberia. His father was already fighting on the front, and would be captured and imprisoned for several years. Through strong faith and luck, the family survived the brutal conditions of Stalin’s work camps. Released in March of 1942, he made his way to Kazakhstan and joined the newly formed Polish army (which would later become the British 8th Army, Polish 2nd Corps). Following in the footsteps of his father, he joined the artillery regiment. Journeying from Siberia to Iran, Iraq, and Palestine, he ultimately fought in the Italian campaign at the Battle of Monte Cassino, and fought bravely until the last day of the war on May 8, 1945. After the war, he moved to England and was educated at the Leicester School of Textiles – but not before he met Ewa Szymańska, the daughter of a Polish colonel, at a post-war party. It’s fitting of Andrzej that when their eyes met across the room, the power went out, and Ewa felt a tap on her shoulder and a voice saying “pay attention to this one. He’s important.” And he was. They married on February 1, 1950. He went on to successfully manage textile operations in England, Ireland, and finally, North Carolina, where he became known as a community leader for his fairness and kindheartedness. You could not go to the Food Lion in Kings Mountain without taking at least an hour, because he was always stopped by people wanting to talk with him – former employees, neighbors, friends. Andrzej’s biggest success – his pride and joy – was his family. He and Ewa raised eight children with truly unconditional love. He is survived by Maciej (Helen, Karen, Peter), Teresa (Rodney), Lech (Anna, Ola, Kristina, Baqir), Halina, Jolanta (Scott, Matthew, Diana, Kate, Cameron), and Ela. He was preceded in death by his son, Bogdan, foster-daughter, Robin, siblings Teresa (Edgar, Raymond) and Stanislaw (Anita). There is a saying by the late Maya Angelou, who fittingly lived in Winston-Salem at the same time Andrzej did. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget
Angela “Angie” Renee Kirk KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Angela “Angie” Renee Kirk, 46, of Kings Mountain, passed away March 5, 2022, at her home. Angela was born in Kings Mountain. She was a 1993 graduate of Bessemer City High School. She attended Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. She is preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Dianne “Dinky” Fite; grandparents, Oscar and Estelle Sanders, Earl and Elizabeth “Boots” Fite. Angie is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, William “Billy” Kirk; father, David Fite of Kings Mountain; sisters, Tonia (Danny) Willard of Gastonia, and Kim Fite of Gastonia; special mother-in-law, Connie Scott of Huntington, WV; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and beloved fur baby, Roxie. A funeral service was held at 3:00 pm Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church, 618 Chestnut Ridge Church Road, Kings Mountain, NC officiated by Pastor Gregg Neely and Rev. David MacEachern. The family received friends 1:30-3:00 pm prior to the service at the church. Burial was at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church 618 Chestnut Ridge Church Road Kings Mountain, NC 28086. KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Linda Scism Paul, 73, of Kings Mountain, NC, went to be with the Lord on March 11, 2022 at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC. She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Grady and Fern Hovis Scism and was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Scism. Linda was a longtime member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church. She retired from Cleveland County School System where she worked as an Administrative Assistant. Linda enjoyed traveling and was devoted to reading and studying the word of God. She was a wonderful grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiling them every chance she got. Linda was a loving wife, devoted mother, and a cherished friend and confidant to many. Her guidance, kindness, and love will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her husband of 52 years: Wayne Paul, of the home; children: Holly Paul Barefoot and husband Jay of Hickory, NC and Eric Paul and wife Adrian of Sumter, SC; grandchildren: Lula Barefoot and Grace and Andrew Paul; brother: John Scism and wife Geraldine of Bennettsville, SC; sisters: Sadie Patterson and husband Gilbert and Shirley Ware, both of Kings Mountain, NC and a host of loving nieces and nephews. KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Douglas Rathbone, 83, of Kings Mountain, NC, went to be with the Lord on March 09, 2022 at his home. He was born in Cleveland County, NC, son of the late Dewey and Dona Dorsey Rathbone and was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Loretta Taylor Rathbone. Doug was also preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Lynn Ramey, and his brothers, Steve, Bobby, and Paul Rathbone and two sisters, Geraldine Hollifield and Juanita Sims. He was a longtime member of First Wesleyan Church and retired from PPG as a foreman after many years of service. Doug served the United States honorably in the US Air Force. He loved sports and was an avid golfer. Doug enjoyed taking family vacations to his home at the coast and loved spending time in the mountains. His kindness, friendship and love will be missed greatly by his family and many friends. He is survived by his granddaughter: Anna Ramey Moncrief and husband Eric of Hendersonville, NC; great-granddaughter: Callie Breeze Moncrief, Hendersonville, NC; son: James Ramey of Kings Mountain, NC; sister: Belinda Adams of Kings Mountain, NC and numerous nephews. CCSO releases February stats By Loretta Cozart Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office released their January statistics. During the month, there were 6,219 calls for service, 160 arrests, 1,201 papers served including 327 criminal, 502 civil, and 372 subpoenas. One hundred fifty-four incident reports were han-
dled: 126 were criminal and 28 were non-criminal. Three hundred seventy-one total gun permits were issued, and an additional 219 concealed carry permits issued. Narcotics seized were 189,456.50 DU pills, Cocaine 18.70 g, Marijuana 78.70 g, Meth 139.39 g, and Heroine 9/60 g. Inmates handled by the sheriff’s office were 256 males and 45 females.

Gibson had slowed to make a right turn. Property damage was estimated at $4,000. FEB. 28: Officer Herndon said Brandi Lynn Steele, 915 Grace Street, operating a 2016 Nissan, was backing out of a parking space on Linwood Road and struck a 2021 Hyundai operated by Karen Rung of Grover. Property damage was estimated at $1,600. MARCH 2: Officer Moore said witnesses said Lori Western of Stanley, operating a 2017 Dodge, ran a red light on Piedmont Avenue and struck a 2006 Ford operated by Susan Kiser, 1500 Phifer Road. Property damage was estimated at $27,000. March 2: Officer Moore said Thomas Eugene Bell, 510 Kilgore Road, operating a 2018 Chevrolet, stated that he was the second vehicle in line to exit from Gary Stewart Boulevard onto Phifer Road when a school bus came to make the turn onto Gary Stewart Boulevard from Phifer Road. Bell said he backed up to give James Thomas Boone, 176 Reep Road, operating a 2004 Ford, to back up as well. According to the report, the Boone vehicle struck the front bumper of Bell’s white truck. Boone said no vehicle was behind him when he started backing and no horn was blown to get his attention. Property damage was estimated at $1,500. MARC H 3: Officer Bullins said Sidney Craig, 328 El Bethel Road, operating a 2018 Toyota, was slowing for halted traffic ahead of him due to an unrelated fire in the roadway of US 74 when the Nissan operated by Arquail Whisnant of Charlotte rear-ended the Toyota. Whisnant was transported to Atrium Health Cleveland for treatment of a possible neck injury. Whisnant was issued citations for moving and license violations. MARCH 3: Officer Moore said Holly Petrilli, 952 Brooklee Drive, operating a 2019 Nissan, was traveling north in the right turn lane of NC 161 to make a left turn onto Linwood Road. Both drivers said the truck in the left lane operated by Wendell Jackson, 163 Galilee Church Road, veered into her lane and sideswiped the Nissan. Property damage was estimated at $4,000.

In November 2021, the Carolina Connector (CCX) intermodal transportation facility opened in Edgecombe County. The facility’s opening enabled the North Carolina Ports Authority to launch the Wilmington Midwest Express, which provides port customers with a daily direct rail connection to the Midwest via the CCX. The North Carolina Ports Authority generates over $60 million in annual revenue. According to a 2018 study, the North Carolina State Ports Authority supports 87,700 jobs, $687.2 million in tax revenue and $15.4 billion in economic output.

Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce hosts in monthly luncheon on March 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby. The featured speaker this month is Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony. Chamber members and guests can network,
shop meets in-person at the Goodwill Opportunity campus on April 13. Registration is open from March 8 – April 11. The first four hours, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., will be focused on instructor-led training and navigation, while the last two hours, from 1 – 3 p.m., are optional lab hours where you will have the opportunity to practice your new skillset. During the instructor-led portion, participants will learn basic computer tasks, like navigating the computer, working with the desktop, utilizing the taskbar and more. After that portion, participants will have the opportunity to utilize Goodwill University’s computer lab to access a variety of tutorial games that will provide hands-on training in keyboarding and mouse manipulation. Family Center Indeed, it was a magnificent edifice and should be listed among the wonders of the ancient world. Jesus responded, “there shall not be left here one stone upon another” (vs. 2). The disciples ask
him three questions. “When shall these things be? (Fulfilled A.D. 70). “What shall be the sign of your coming and the end of the world”? His first response is a warning against strong deception (vs. 4,24) Of all the signs what made days of Noah (vs. 36-39) stand out as unique. Gen 1:27: God made man in His image, made Eve as his help meet (2:22), placed them in the garden - serpent comes with “the lie” that caused his fall from grace in his beginning (Isa. 14:13/ Ezek. 28:6) Pride, you’ll be like God and you’ll have great wisdom (I Jn. 2:15). The great war between the
woman’s seed and lucifer’s seed (Gen. 3:15) has raged ever since Satan paid attention. He knew there would be a Savior coming that would do him in; and he set out to stop it by corrupting the blood line (seed). Gen. 6:1-7, without explanation, Moses records “there were giants in the earth in those days; and also after”. This begs the question where did they come from since God did not create them. Answer, they were offspring of fallen angels Enoch 1:7 records 200 angels (watchers) descended upon Mt. Hermon, during the time of Jared (7th from Adam). Their task was to watch over
mankind but not interfere. However, they lusted after the daughters of men and took wives of all they chose (Gen. 6:2). This was a great wickedness which God would not forgive (vs. 5 & 3), because this was Satan’s way of blocking the Messiah from coming and corrupting the bloodline. In plain language, Satan was creating hybrids. Giants, soulless irredeemable offspring. But, Noah and immediate family were not contaminated with serpent seed. “A just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God”(6:9). Have you ever wondered
what was so evil as to require worldwide flood to destroy everything? Enoch 7:1-16 spells it out. I know Enoch is not part of our Bible, but I feel is useful for it’s historicity and Jude 14-15 quotes Enoch 1:9 almost verbatim. Before you reject this out of hand, let’s do a quick scan of our Bible. Gen. 14:5-9 Abram wars with four tribes of giants. God promises Abraham and his descendants the land of Canaan. (Gen. 12:5-7). Satan heard that promise and once again tries to block the plan of God. When the Hebrews from Egypt arrive “giants were in their promised
land (Nu. 13:33) when they do dispossess the Canaan there were giants (i.e. Og of Bashan Josh. 12:4) Caleb had to displace giants (Josh. 14:12). David killed the giant who had four brothers, I could go on but space will not allow. I plan to continue this train of thought because we MUST know why it is important to us today, as in the days of Noah. I hope you can appreciate I have raced through this subject because of the stress of space. It deserves your sincerest and in depth examination.

Girls Who Code is a free six-week program for students to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models using computer science to change the world. Adams 3 lbs. top round steak 3 tsp. Adolph’s meat tenderizer 2 T. sugar 4 T. sherry 4 T. soy sauce 2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. Accent Pierce meat all over with the above ingredients. Mix them well before piercing. Marinate 6 hours, turning every 90 minutes. Broil on grill Serves 6. MEAT AND POTATOES Debbie Bumgardner 1 lb. hamburger 1 large onion 2 boxes tater tots 1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup grated cheese Spread hamburger in bottom of pan. Slice onion and divide into rings. Place onion rings on top of meat. Place tater tots on next layer. Spread soup on next layer. Add cheese to top layer. Cook for about 1 hour at 350 degrees. PORK CHOP CASSEROLE Myrtle Casserole 4 to 6 pork chops 1 cup uncooked rice 1 can consommé soup 1 cup water 1 large onion, chopped Salt and pepper In 2-quart casserole, place rice, water, soup, and onion. Cook onion a couple of minutes in water before adding to ingredients. Lay
pork chops on mixture. Cook 1 hour at 350 degrees. SUN-DROP POUNDCAKE Shirley McMurry 3 cups sugar 1 ½ cup shortening 5 eggs 3 c. sifted flour 1 c. Sun Drop 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. lemon flavoring Cream sugar and shortening. Add one egg one at a time and beat well. Add flour alternately with Sun Drop and flavoring ending with flour. Pour into tubed cake pan and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Winners were announced this past weekend for the “I Am Woman” art exhibit and competition at Southern Arts Society (SASi) in Kings Mountain. “I Am Woman” is an annual exhibit for artwork that represents the feminine or female experience. This is a judged show with first, second and third place prizes along with three merit awards. Though the exhibit and competition focus on the feminine, both men and women enter work for the show, allowing for a variety of viewpoints to be expressed. There were sixty-six entries in this year’s show by thirty-one artists from Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, and Mecklenburg Counties in North Carolina and York County in South Carolina. Artists have created works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, sculpture, textiles, and mixed media to interpret their view of “I Am Woman.” Many pieces in this year’s show reflect both the strength and the serenity that women exude over the course of their lives, in good times and bad. Women are shown as the mother figure – hardworking and resilient throughout all the trials and pain that life brings. And some pieces show that women are still girls who just want to have fun. Judging this year’s show is Susan Carlisle Bell, former Professor of Art at Gardner Webb University. Awards were presented at a public reception on Saturday March 12, 2022. First Place was given to Sara Dame Setzer of Gaffney, SC for her oil painting “Dawn Reading at Kitchen Counter with Cat.” Ms. Bell offered comments for her first-place choice “This artist is a genius at composition and contrasts, organic to geometric, straight to curve, dark to light. There is a Matisse flavor to this more realistic painting.” Second Place went to Martha Manco of Tega Cay, SC for her oil painting “Thinking About It.” Ms. Bell said “The figure’s proportions and the projection of the left arm and knee shows a keen knowledge of anatomy. But it is the understanding of light and fluidity of the fabric that enlivens the figure. The brushstrokes are loose yet communicate mass of the figure and has a spontaneity that is refreshing.” Third Place was given to James L. Norman of Kings Mountain, NC for his oil painting “Silken Lady.” Ms. Bell commented on her selection “With a minimum of definition and a bravado of suggestion the artist has given us a charming image. It is impressive that the same surface did not limit his expressive use of color and brushstroke.” Three persons were selected for Merit Awards. Those were given to Lynne Parker of Kings Mountain, NC for her two photo’s “Dressed in Raven Cloth” and “No Pressure at Midnight”; to Kenny Walker of Lawndale, NC for his two drawings “Proverbs 31 Woman” pencil (graphite) and “Seventeen” pastel pencil; and to Barbara O’Neal Davis of York, SC for her encaustic painting “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. Ms. Bell selected both entries by Lynne Parker and Kenny Walker for merit saying, “these two artists have entered works of equal merit which speaks to their mastery in their medium.” In awarding Ms. O’Neal Davis a Merit Award, Ms. Bell comments “Color, expression, and body language all communicate girls having fun together. Read Across America Week at North School By Anna Hughes North Elementary School in Kings Mountain had an awesome Read Across America Week. They celebrated reading by having a spirit week that went along with five book themes that included Reading Jogs the Mind, Surfs up for Reading, Western Wednesday, Pawsitively Wild about Reading, and Freedom Friday (Red, White, and Blue). Staff was thrilled to have seventeen guest readers on campus to read books to the students that went along with the theme of the day. Our students were excited to have different community partners join us for a wonderful week of celebrating reading. The Lady Mountaineers missed an opportunity to go on top in the bottom of the fourth when Patrick led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by Paige Fleming. With two outs, the Lady Mountaineers attempted a squeeze bunt but the Lady Cavaliers were able to get the putout at first and then come to bat to score the winning runs. Kings Mountain was scheduled to open Big South 3A Conference action Tuesday at home against Hunter Huss. The Lady Mountaineers travel to Burns today for a non-conference game, then to North Gaston Friday for a BSC contest. They return home March 22 for a 6 p.m. contest with Forestview.

Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team was able to get its doubleheader with East Rutherford in Friday but the visitors took both contests, 4-2 and 7-1. It was the Lady Mountaineers’ only action of the week as all other contests were postponed because of rain. The non-conference contest was originally scheduled for last Tuesday as a single game, but due to both teams having postponements all week they agreed on two five-inning contests. Kings Mountain stayed close throughout in the opening game. The Lady Cavaliers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Mollie Burgess led off with a single to left and later scored on an error. Scout Troop 92 travels to Tekoa Foothills Twenty Scouts and six leaders of Troop 92 travelled to Tekoa Foothills, in Casar, for some service project work, troop elections, and recreation. Several Scouts commented positively on the recent outing. Joey S. said, “I think our dinners were above average for this trip. This trip is one of my favorites to go on because we cooked great food compared to our other trips. We also got to put in a couple of service hours this weekend doing the projects we were assigned. Overall, this has got to be one of my favorite trips!”
"I had a blast. I loved hanging out with the young Scouts. They were hard working and proactive. We got a lot done for the people who own the cabin, like moving rocks to fill in potholes, we built planter boxes and we cleared out a bedroom for renovations.
