CCC opens Small Black History Month at Business Center Patrick Senior Center Office in KM T h e S m a l l Business Center at Cleveland Community College is opening a satel- STEVE PADGETT lite office. “As the second largest city in Cleveland County, we would like to provide Kings Mountain with more convenient access to Small Business Center resources,” said Steve Padgett, Director. “Economic development is increasing in and around Kings Mountain, making the east side of Cleveland County an area of opportunity for small business growth.” The mission of the Small Business Center is to increase the success rate and the number of viable small businesses in Cleveland
County. The center provides high-quality, readily accessible assistance to prospective and existing small business owners. Elementary teacher charged with sexual exploitation of a minor Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office arrested Anthony Marqui Neal, 36, of 702 Mount Sinai Church Road in Shelby, for the sexual exploitation of a minor. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation after a concerned citizen reported someone whom they had talked to on a dating site had disclosed disturbing information about children. The case was assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) investigators. Once it was discovered that he was a teacher at a local elementary school, the sheriff’s office notified the school’s administration
and arranged to interview him. Following the interview, authorities ANTHONY issued a MARQUI NEAL search warrant for Mr. Neal’s residence. As a result, several electronic devices were seized. On the same day, school administrators suspended Mr. Neal. They are working closely with the Sheriff’s Office to fully investigate the incident. During an examination of the digital devices that were seized, images and a video were discovered of minor children involved in sex acts. These images and See CHARGED, Page 5A
On Tuesday, February 13, the Patrick Senior Center in Kings Mountain was proud to host its Black History Month Celebration, which was a Celebration of the Arts - to Educate and Elevate! Mayor Rob Wagman provided opening remarks, and Kings Mountain Councilmember Annie Thombs served as keynote speaker. Several local artists showcased their works for everyone to enjoy. The Patrick Center Chorus provided beautiful music, and volunteer Sarah Miller led
the attendees in a meaningful song. Reverend William Thompson presided over the event, which the Albemarle Corporation and the City of Kings Mountain sponsored. The Patrick Senior Center staff commented on the event, saying, “Many thanks to the Planning Committee, the Patrick Center staff and volunteers, our guest speaker, and all artists who participated in making this event a success.”

City hosting 3D breast cancer screenings on March 6 On Wednesday, March 6, the City of Kings Mountain will hold 3D breast cancer screenings at 103 West King Street in Kings Mountain. When it comes to breast cancer, early detection is key. Breast Cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in the country. In an effort to support the women in our community, the city has partnered with Invision Diagnostics to provide breast cancer screenings to all women who qualify.

Each eligible household may receive up to a maximum of $600 per year for combined heating and cooling assistance. This is a federally funded program, and the total amount that Cleveland County re-

That deduction leaves a remaining balance of $395,111 in the County’s emergency fund to pay for heating bills this winter. To be eligible to receive financial assistance with heating, a household must: • Be located in Cleveland
County • Have at least one U.S. citizen or non-citizen who meets the eligibility criteria • Have income equal to or less than 150 percent of the federal poverty limit For example: • For a household of one, an income of $18,210 or less • For a family of four, an income of $47,070 or less • Have a health-related issue that might be made worse without heat
• Have a utility bill that shows how much is owed to the utility company • Be responsible for their heating cost Each household is individually evaluated, and if determined eligible for assistance, payments are made directly to the household’s utility company. Man charged with setting off firework at a gas pump Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office arrested William Michael Fioritto, 23, FIORITTO of 331 Warlick Road, in Lawndale, for an incident that occurred in Fallston on February 11. Investigators were no-
tified by the manager of the Fallston Community Mart that Mr. Fioritto had set off an explosive device near the gas pumps of the store. Through the investigation, it was determined that the explosive device was an illegal mortar-style pyrotechnic / firework purchased in another state. Mr. Fioritto was arrested
and charged with Burning of Certain Buildings, Going Armed to the Terror of the Public, and Possession of Pyrotechnics. He is being held in the Cleveland County Detention Center on a $25,000.00 secured bond.

ship with the United States Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force and a tip from a concerned citizen. Green was safely taken into custody without incident. Green is being held at the Gaston County Jail pending extradition back to South Carolina.

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail 5K and 10-mile run, March 23 By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain Gateway Trail announced its 5K and10mile runs for March 23 this year at 807 S. Battleground Ave. in Kings Mountain. Runners can sign up at www.runsignup.com. The runs are professionally managed on the day of the run, on Facebook, and at the website www.runsignup.com. Sponsors for the run receive a thank you letter and complimentary runner forms to give to runners. Complimentary run shirts are given to the runners, and nice trophies are awarded to winners of all ages and run categories. Run Shirts have the sponsor names on the back, and a large banner is placed with sponsor names on the front
of the trail building. They are listed on the trail website each year. The trail opened in 2009 and began having annual 5K and l0-Mile runs for a fundraiser, exercise, and getting folks to Kings Mountain. Many local folks from a large area around Kings Mountain come to participate in a healthy event, giving runners something to look forward to and having lots of outdoor fun. Kings Mountain Gateway Trail Director Shirley Brutko said, “2024 marks the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail’s 15th year, and all the runs have been a big success. We usually have anywhere between 180 to 230 runners participating and approximately 150 attending and watching the event.”
“It supports tourism and economic development for Kings Mountain, the county, and the region. Sometimes we have out-of-town runners who stay at our local hotels,” she continued. “We have been able to give pottery leaves and beautiful pottery disks for trophies, which are very popular with our runners. We run in all weather and have sometimes had rain, snow, ice, and sunshine. We serve refreshments at the event and have a large tent to shelter runners if needed. On February 13, the Kings Mountain Fire Department had a historical moment. This was the first time it staffed a fully African American crew on an apparatus. Engine 283, which covers the city's Eastside, was staffed by
Firefighter Holden Harrelson, Firefighter Dantarious Clark, and Firefighter Paul Carson. According to KMFD Interim Chief Josh Wall, “Statistics show that approximately only 8.1% of firefighters in the United States are African American. I believe having members who
reflect our community will only grow our recruitment abilities and help strengthen our relationship with our community as a whole. Firefighter Harrelson proudly brought this achievement to our attention and asked for a photo. This is a proud moment for our department that I felt worthy of sharing.”

Pieces of Kings Mountain History Last weekend, Melvin Ware posted an article written LORETTA about the COZART 50th anniversary of Kings Mountain High School’s Class of 1934, which ran in the Herald on June 21, 1984. This was Melvin’s father’s graduating class. This class is so special because they were the first to graduate from the rebuilt school after a fire in 1933 destroyed the main building that faced Ridge Street. Students had to adjust to a new school building that year, but the bonds of friendship didn’t wane in those passing decades. This year will be the 90th anniversary of the Class of ’34 and as of this writing, some class members are still with us. This story shows that KMHS class spirit ran deep then, the same as it does today. Here is the story shared in the Herald in 1984. Fifty years ago, in 1934, the 33 KMHS graduating seniors had the honor of being the first class to graduate from the new high school, now known as Central School, and now housing only the present sixth and seventh grades in the KM

Of the living members, all but three were in attendance at the June 2 reunion, the first reunion of the class since its graduation. “We had a lot to talk about,” said Hugh Falls, a member of the Class of 1934. It was a nostalgic reunion for those returning to Kings Mountain to the Holiday Inn for a social hour and banquet. Sparked by W.K. Mauney, Jr., a member of
the class, the search for the 33 members began six months ago. Some classmates, according to “Billy”, were easy to locate, but others took diligent tracking to find. In due time, however, the names and addresses were found. Mr. Mauney said the only sad note was finding that eight members of the class are now deceased. Since the class had never had a reunion, the preparations for the happy day were excit-

The ad’s premise was that the manager had gone on vacation, so the employees ran an ad saying, “He’s Gone ... We’re ‘Gone’” They invited customers to trade in anything they had of value to get furniture bargains. According to the ad, they usually only took used furniture. The ad shared, “Ordinarily, we trade only for used furniture—but this is an all-out Trade-In Sale. Do you have a pig, calf, shotgun, ham, hunting knife, eggs, tomatoes, dog, old Jalopy, or anything else you need less than you need some new furniture? If so, Sterchi’s is the place to talk trade and to make trades. We’re liberal - Come In!” They offered several items with trade-ins for sale, including an eight-piece Chrome Dinette for $99.95, a Norge Wringer Washer for $99.95, and a TraVler TV for $169.95. They encouraged customers to shop quickly before the manager got home! This ad campaign ran throughout 1955 and was likely very successful for the retailer on the humor value alone.

He knew that unforgiveness fractures relationships lead to bitterness, and bitterness leads to death. Paul wrote, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against
someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13. Forgiveness and love frees us as well as the person who has wronged us. Life is far too short to harbor such unforgiveness. One song I sing shifts my focus from those who have wronged me to the wrongs I have committed against God. Even so, God forgave me. The lyrics state: “Forgiven, I’ve been forgiven. God has looked beyond my sin. Saved me from what I might have been. Gave me a new life within.” Praise the Lord; God forgave us, and we must also forgive. As we do, we are being formed into the image of Christ.

The Schiele Museum’s CC Arts Council presents The Harlem Renaissance Experience 24th Annual Fossil Fair By Loretta Cozart
Visitors are invited to travel back in time at The Schiele Museum of Natural History on Saturday, February 24, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. during the 24th Annual Fossil Fair. Participants can search for North Carolina fossils, meet live animals (“living fossils”), mine for gemstones, take a Dino Safari, talk to geologists and paleontologists, enjoy a dinosaur-themed planetarium show, and learn all about prehistoric life through hands-on activities. For rock collectors, gemstone enthusiasts, or fossil hunters, the museum will have experts on hand to identify specimens, educate visitors, and sell geodes, fossils, rocks, jewelry, and more. Geologists will be available to help beginners mine for their own gemstones and learn more about their finds. There will also be family-friendly scavenger hunts, fossil digs, crafts, and a special planetarium show, “Jurassic Flaws”, that explores the science behind a popular dinosaur movie. Next NC Scholarship could cover tuition and fees for community college students Carowinds prepares to employ The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) has announced the new Next NC Scholarship, which could cover the full cost of tuition and fees for students at Gaston College or any of the other state’s community colleges. The scholarship is available to students who enroll for the 2024-2025 academic year and is awarded to those who qualify after completing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). Eligible community college students will receive at least $3,000 per year. Students who plan to attend Gaston College are encouraged to complete the FAFSA
by August 15, in order to receive all of the Next NC Scholarship funds for which they are eligible. The application for the 2024-2025 year is now open. Cleveland County bridge closed through November 2024 The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced that it closed McBrayer Homestead Road in Cleveland County over a branch of Sandy Run on Monday, Feb. 19, to begin replacing the existing bridge. The NCDOT awarded
the $1.2 million project to Claremont contractor Kemp Sigmon Construction Col, Inc. Drivers will detour around the closure using Sunset Boulevard and Pleasant Bridge Church Road, returning to McBrayer Homestead Road.
The detour will continue through November 2024 or until the bridge construction is complete and road traffic is opened to the public. Vegetation establishment and landscaping work will continue into Spring 2025.

Godbold College of Business NC Attorney General GWU’s connects students to professionals appeals Duke Energy’s rate increase Attorney General Josh Stein appealed the North Carolina Utilities Commission’s decision to grant a rate increase to Duke Energy Carolinas on Wednesday, Feb. 14. “Every dollar matters for North Carolina families,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “Yet, Duke
Energy’s rate increase is too high. So, I’m asking the Court to side with North Carolina’s ratepayers and to reject this rate increase.” If the North Carolina Supreme Court does not rule in favor of Attorney General Stein, the Commission’s order would
result in a net overall increase in rates of approximately 15 percent for consumers. An increase of that magnitude means that in three years, a typical ratepayer will pay approximately $20 more monthly for their utility bill.
NC second in job quitting declines In a recent report by SelectSoftware, an employment search and advisory firm, employees in North Carolina have seen the most significant decline in leaving their jobs in all but one other US state. In a study conducted between November 2022 and November 2023, the rate of job quitting in North Carolina decreased by 35.7%. Only California saw a more considerable decrease of 44.8%. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics measures and reports state-by-state quit rates. In October 2023, Alaska ranked as the top state with the highest job resignation rate of 3.55 for non-farm-related employment. South Carolina was also among the states with the most prevalent resignation rates and ranked seventh at 3.10. North Carolina had a rate of 2.70 with an average monthly quit count of 12,500. While non-farm-related job resignation rates in North Carolina remain the 20th highest in the nation, the 35.7% year-toyear decline in job quitting is positive news. There are many factors in job retention. Select-

A study by Globoforce/WorkHuman, another workforce research firm, found that employees who receive regular recognition are five times more likely to feel valued and appreciated, six times more likely to invest in their work, and seven times more likely to stay with their current employer for at least another year. Peer-to-peer recognition is just as crucial as manager recognition. A separate survey by Globoforce/Workhuman found that 41% of employees want to be recognized by a peer, and 37% want to be acknowledged by their managers. And employees who feel recognized are more engaged at work. According to a Gallup poll, organizations with high employee engagement levels are 21% more profitable. At least once a week, students in the Godbold College of Business have an opportunity to see how the concepts they study in the classroom apply to entrepreneurs, managers, and others in business. Wednesday Experiential Learning (WEL) days started two years ago with input from Dr. Mischia Taylor, dean and assistant professor in the College of Business, and Micah Martin, director of the Center for Personal and Professional Development. GWU Career Coach Blake Elizalde, explained the goal of WEL days is to give students a look into what goes into starting and managing a business. “Experiential Learning Days are great opportunities for students to meet a variety of business professionals to grow their network,” he noted. Elizalde, a GWU alumnus, joined the staff in July after graduating in May 2023. While a student, he served as Student Body President, Student Recruitment Ambassador, Resident Advisor, and Marketing Coordinator for dining services on campus. “These professionals share some insight into their respective careers and share a little bit about how they got to be where they are today,” added Elizalde. “A lot of students do not know what they want to do when they get out of college, and that’s OK. Attending these WEL Days and listening to these speakers can pique stu-
dents’ career interests and help answer that ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ question.” In addition to bringing guests on campus, Elizalde is offering more trips to tour regional companies and attractions and hear from their representatives. Last semester, the students toured the Bank of America Stadium and made a trip to Greenville, S.C., to learn about employment opportunities. This semester, students have already been to the Spectrum Center and will be going to Asheville, N.C, to learn about the industries there. Senior marketing major Madelyn Kampfe, of Lincoln, Neb., appreciates the information offered on WEL days. “We’ve had so many educational speakers and topics to help us further our careers,” she observed. “WEL days are really the professors and the staff at Gardner-Webb helping the students as much as they can. Whether that’s them bringing Micah Martin from the career center to talk or bringing alumni back to discuss their careers after college, or even people looking to hire, everyone they bring in is extremely insightful.” She considers the most important lessons she’s learned from the speakers are the values of networking and hard work. “Blake Elizalde said that 85% of jobs come from connections made,” Kampfe asserted. “I’ve also learned that you have to work for what you want in life, and
you can’t just wait for it to fall into your lap because that rarely if ever, happens. I think there will be times in the future that I will remember tidbits that speakers said during WEL days. Knowing how to create a resume or cover letter or find jobs in the area is so helpful.” WEL Day Schedule • Feb. 21 – A guest speaker from Northwestern Mutual, a former Olympic athlete, will talk about wealth management and discuss internship opportunities as well as briefly share about his swimming career in the Olympics. • March 6 – Women’s leadership: empowering event. • March 20 – The Center for Personal and Professional Development will discuss skills in the workplace and how to succeed in preparation for a networking event and the career fair. • April 5 – Senior business students will practice their soft skills while participating in a networking event with potential employers. • April 10 – Career Fair. Mountaineers complete regular season with 78-67 victory over BSC champ Crest Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers knocked off Big South 3A Conference regular season basketball champion Crest 78-67 in the final night of action last Friday in Boiling Springs. The result left the Chargers with a 12-2 conference and 17-3 overall record and the 2023-24 BSC championship. The Mountaineers finished 11-3 to finish in a
tie with Gastonia Ashbrook for second place. All BSC teams are competing in the annual conference tournament this week. The top teams, including the Mountaineers, will advance to the state 3A tournament. The loss to the Mountaineers was the Chargers’ first BSC loss of the season on their home court.
The game was close throughout with the Mountaineers up 13-12 after the first period, 42-39 at halftime and 51-44 going into the final chapter. The Mountaineers got another outstanding overall performance from all players as three men scored in double figures. Bradley Floyd led the way with 29 points, Kee’donn Linney

KM Middle routs Crest to advance to Tri-County championship game Kings Mountain Middle School’s Patriots advanced to the Tri-County Conference championship game last week with a convincing 52-21 victory over county rival Crest. The Patriots got off to a slow start, going the first four minutes before scoring on KJ Bell’s steal and fastbreak layup. Silas Tate followed with a breakaway layup to give the Patriots their first lead and they never looked back. They scored the final 15 points of the quarter for a 15-4 lead. Bell had five steals and combined with Tate for 12 points during the run. KM kept up its scoring pace in the second quarter, going 7 for 8 from inside the arc. The Patriots extended their lead to 20 points on a deep two pointer by Tate at
the buzzer. Bell added five points and Xavier Hutchens pitched in with four. During the third period the Patriots turned up their defensive pressure to extend the lead to 46-12 and put the game out of reach. New Atlantic League team plays ball in CaroMount Health Park this spring After the departure of the financially troubled Honey Hunters baseball team from CaroMount Health Park in Gastonia, a new minor league team will be taking its place. Owner Andy Kaufmann of Zawyer Sports and Entertainment announced that The Gastonia Baseball Club will field the new team this spring. The new team's home

The awards are valued at $14,000 ($3,500 per year for up to four years) for North Carolina high school students attending a participating North Carolina college or university. North Carolina community college transfer students can receive $3,500 per year for up to three years. “The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program is an important component of the Foundation’s workforce preparedness strategy,” said Golden LEAF President, Chief Executive Officer Scott T. Hamilton. “The Golden LEAF Board established the scholarship program 25 years ago with the goal for Golden LEAF scholars to gain the talent, knowledge, and skills necessary to help North Carolina’s rural communities thrive by returning home to

Van Dyke wins the CCS spelling bee By Loretta Cozart On February 15, Kings Mountain Middle School’s Ethan Van Dyke won the Cleveland County Schools spelling bee, beating out 20 contenders from schools across the county. In a back-and-forth final round, Ethan faced off against Stella Fortenberry of Burns Middle School. The winning word was
“transpiration,” after Stella misspelled “unscathed.” Ethan spelled that word correctly, followed by correctly spelling “transpiration,” that resulted in him being declared the winner. Beware of imposter scams Last week, a first-person account of a woman who was scammed was posted on the internet. This story serves to remind us that scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people out of their money and steal their personal information. Even the most educated people can fall for their tricks and manipulation tactics, especially when they make you believe there is a sense of urgency or you could be in danger. “Imposter scams are a common scam in which criminals pretend to represent a government agency, law enforcement, a company, or even a family member. These scams
use threats of legal consequences or arrest to make you act without thinking clearly,” NC Attorney General Josh Stein’s office shared. According to the FTC, people lost $2.7 billion to imposter scammers last year. Use our tips to help protect yourself or loved ones from this type of scammer: • One of the most important things to remember is that government officials will not reach out to you via text or phone to threaten you with arrest or ask for your personal information. Keeping Older Drivers Safe on the Road
Dear Savvy Senior, What safety tips can you recommend for older drivers? My 86-year-old mother, who still drives herself, had a fender bender last month and I worry about her safety. Back Seat Daughter Dear Back Seat, With more and more older Americans driving well into their 70s, 80s and beyond, there are a variety of things your mom can do to help maintain and even improve her driving skills. Here are some recommendations by driving rehabilitation specialists that work with older drivers.
Get an eye exam: Because about 90 percent of the information necessary to drive is received through our eyes, this is a good first step in ensuring your mom’s driving safety. So, get your mom’s eyes checked every year to be sure her vision and eyewear is up to par. Get a physical or wellness exam: As people age, it’s also very important to monitor changes in overall health as it relates to
driving. Medical conditions like arthritis, dementia, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, sleep apnea and stroke can all affect driving.
In addition, many seniors also take multiple medications or combinations of medications that can make them drowsy or lightheaded, which can impair judgment or affect reflexes or alertness necessary for safe driving. So, an annual physical or wellness examination and medication review is also a smart way to verify your mom’s driving safety. Take a refresher course: AARP and the American Automobile Association (AAA) both have older driver improvement courses that can help your mom brush up her driving skills and understand how to adjust for slower reflexes, weaker vision and other age-related physical changes that can affect driving. Taking a class may also earn her a discount on her auto insurance. To locate a class, contact your local AAA (AAA.com) or AARP (AARPdriversafety.org, 888-227-7669). Most courses cost around $20 to $30 and can be taken online.
Make some adjustments: Adjusting when and where your mom drives are another way to help keep her safe and behind the wheel longer. Some simple adjustments include not driving after dark or during rush hour traffic, avoiding major highways or other busy roads, and not driving in poor weather conditions. Evaluate her driving: To stay on top of your mom’s driving abilities you should take a ride with her from time-to-time watching for problem areas. For example: Does she drive at inappropriate speeds, tailgate or drift between lanes? Does she have difficulty seeing, backing up or changing lanes? Does she react slowly, get confused easily or make poor driving decisions? For more evaluation tips, AAA offers a senior driver self-rating assessment exercise (Drivers 65 Plus) that you or she can access at Exchange.AAA.com/safety/senior-driver-safety-mobility. If your mom needs a more thorough evaluation, you can turn to a driver rehabili-
tation specialist who’s trained to evaluate older drivers and offer suggestions and adaptations to help keep her safe. But be aware that this type of assessment can run anywhere between $100 and $500 or more. To locate a professional in your area, visit ADED.net or AOTA.org – search “driving practitioner directory.” When it gets to the point that your mom’s driving isn’t safe anymore and she needs to quit, you may need to help her create a list of names and phone numbers of family, friends and local transportation services that she can call on for a ride.
