Christmas luminary service Dec. 24 City-owned Mountain Rest Cemetery will be aglow with candles Christmas Eve from 5:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. as citizens continue a Christmas Eve tradition in Kings Mountain. “We had thousands of people drive through the cemetery last year and we expect crowds this year," said Mayor Pro Tem Mike Butler, who said he needs help in lighting the candles on 5,000 graves in the cemetery. “We want anyone who will help to come to the cemetery at 2 p.m. next Wednesday, Dec. 24," he said. City crews will place milk jugs filled with sand and a candle on each grave early next week. This is the 22nd year that the luminaria service will be held for people to pay respect to their loved ones, riding through the beautifully decorated grounds where families have placed poinsettias and seasonal flowers on the graves.

Human skeletal remains found Human skeletal remains have been found in the woods near a home at 823 Long Branch Road near Grover, according to Sheriff Alan Norman. Norman
said the scene was cleared and processed Sunday afternoon and the remains have been sent to the Charlotte Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy. The decedent's identity is unknown at this time and the case remains under investigation, Norman said. After months of debate and discussion on the matter, the Cleveland County Board of Education on Monday voted to approve an amendment to its student transfer policy dealing with student-athletes. The move is a tightening of previous rules and brings more oversight into a process that board members concede affects only a minority of students. The new policy imposes a 365 no-sports-participation rule for student athletes who are unable to prove the move to a new school was precipitated by unavoidable circumstances, such as divorce, physical and/or educational disability, or change of domicile, or court system mandates. “It’s not a complete overhauling, said Greg Shull, the school system’s
communications director. “The change is really just about the athletic eligibility component of the transfer policy.” Student-athletes who are rejected for transfer approval will have an opportunity to appeal the decision before a School Transfer Committee, which will be created in the coming months. The committee’s decision would not be final. Any contested decisions could still come before the overall board. The new rules, which take effect at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, are in line with the recommendations of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Although the rule change won unanimous support from board members in Monday’s vote, several on the panel said they were apprehensive about implementing a rule that might hurt students whose interest

No room in the mall say church workers For nearly a dozen years volunteers from Family Worship Center, 1818 Shelby Road, have wrapped Christmas presents at Cleveland Mall for benefit of missions project. Vickie Black, project chairman, said they were told this season they could no longer have space at the Mall to gift wrap. “So, we are wrapping in the vestibule of our church from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 and the gift wrap price will be by size with limited boxes available," said Black. Prescription drug ring busted Six people who were allegedly working together to sell prescription medication and marijuana in the Boiling Springs area of Cleveland County have been busted on drug charges. Searches by investigators of the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit and Criminal Interdiction Team resulted in the seizure of 3,274 hydrocodone pills, 99 Xanax pills, 364 grams of hydroponically grown marijuana, a stolen Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol and $5,014. The street value of all the controlled substances seized was in excess of $50,000. Lisa Proctor and the Detective Division staff have been shopping for warm, winter clothes for Kings Mountain youngsters and police are still looking for toys and gifts of cash to spend on needy young people. The Toy Room, actually the large training room at KMPD, is beginning to fill with new toys and clothing. Proctor said that children's clothing
for ages 10-12 are needed now as well as books, games, etc. that children 10-12 like. Police will start making Santa deliveries next week and just in time for Christmas. Captain Johnson said that patrol officers usually carry stuffed animals in their police cars to be able to give a child something when a family is involved in a wreck. “It's something we like to do," he said.
With a clever bell choir concert, a play that celebrated the joy of small blessings and delicious snacks like sausage balls and festive cupcakes, it felt a lot closer to the big night than the mid-December day on the calendar suggested. Merry Christmas all year long at Central Methodist kitchen For many December is the month to focus on gifts – those boxed and wrapped in shiny paper and pretty bows. Some of the gifts that people are giving this season Lib Stewart Managing Editor aren’t wrapped – food, fuel, cash, trips with friends to the doctor, a helping hand. Kings Mountain people have long been generous in helping the less fortunate at Christmas time and the list of people

who provide clothing, food, toys and other essentials would fill up more than this page. There are many who give their gifts anonymously and there probably isn’t a church or organization in Greater Kings Mountain that doesn’t give help, in some form or another, during the holiday season and at other times of the year too. Back in 2000 John O. Plonk Jr. and John Maddox had the idea to start a soup kitchen at Central United Methodist Church. They wanted to serve lunch to anyone who came to the church door for help and so it began as a ministry with about 40 people coming for Monday lunch prepared by volunteers from the church. Fast forward to 2014. Today the church serves some 700 meals every week – Mondays from 11:30-12:30 and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m.- and delivers 200 meals to shut-ins on Mondays. A long table in the church fellowship building is usually stocked with household products and food staples that the
lunch and supper crowd can take home with them for their own pantries. For Jim Potter, who chairs the project, Dru White and Carol Brazzell it’s Merry Christmas all year long. The volunteers are organized, they know exactly who is doing what chore and Potter runs a well-oiled and efficient undertaking that the late John Plonk would never dream that from a small project 14 years ago it would evolve into the ministry it is today. Volunteers from other churches in town volunteer and donate food. Food Lion on Shelby Road is a big contributor and food donations also come from Second Harvest Food Bank. On a recent afternoon Dru White, Carol Brazzell and Marsha Bristow were opening cans of green beans and other vegetables, preparing meats, and getting ready to feed a large supper crowd. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday all volunteers enjoyed a holiday drop-in at the church and were thanked by the proj-
Letters to the Editor To the Editor: I feel for these. There’s several groups of people that I really feel badly for: Police, teachers, pastors and parents. I have no idea why certain people choose their careers or positions in life. What I do know is that many of them seriously intend to do a service for their fellow man. Most of them in the list I mention really want what’s best for all of us. Some are unfit for their jobs, but we certainly can’t do away with the positions because some aren’t doing a good job. Police, for example, have a tough job to do. I read recently about an officer in Salisbury who was fired after 22 years of service because of a social media post he did. I believe the subject was the happenings in Ferguson. What I don’t understand is why the officer was fired. No, I don’t have the details and haven’t read the post he was fired over, but I do question why a police officer somehow loses his freedom of speech just because he’s a public servant. I’m fairly certain he didn’t post as representing the Salisbury Police Dept., so I don’t think he should have been fired for expressing an opinion. For God’s sake, our President expresses his all the time and he’s not out putting his life on the line every day. Then there’s teachers. Both they and the police are responsible for discipline and peace. Both have the responsibility but not the authority to do either. If a kid is unruly,
about the only thing a teacher can do is send or take them to the principal. The principal has no real authority either, except for possibly expulsion and even then the outcry will be enormous. The police are in even more dire positions. It doesn’t seem to matter what they do trying to maintain law and order they are faced with public ridicule about the way they do their job. All the training in the world cannot make them more aware of our rights than they already are. We’re creating a world where no one will want to be a police officer or a teacher. My answer to that is to give them back authority equal to the responsibility. I was once wrongly stopped for speeding but my reaction was not to disobey the officer. After I gave him the logical reason it could not have been me he released me. Had I chosen to hide my hands, or suddenly reach back into the car he would have had every right in the world to do whatever necessary to stop me. Had I attacked him he would have had the right to shoot me. Parents have the most important and hardest job of all. They love their children and want to protect them from everything. Parents though, don’t want to accept that their children are not perfect and that everything the children get involved in is not always what the parent would approve of. Parents also fail to realize that children often lie to try and avoid punishment. Yes, you parents reading this I am talking about your child. You need to teach your kids respect not only for you but for all others, and most assuredly See LETTERS, Page 7

Reflections on the loss of a family doctor “But the effect of her (his) being on those around her (him) was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, Dr. and rest in unvisited tombs.” George Scott Moss Eliot, Middlemarch Dr. John C McGill passed away early Tuesday morning November 11, 2014. The news was not broadcast nationally and was most likely visualized quickly without a great deal of thought by most locally. Such a life of service to his fellow man summarized in an obituary, Memorial service and burial ceremony. His “tomb” will not be visited by many, certainly not as much as celebrities and politicians of the past. Dr. John, as can be said by many, cared for myself and my family growing up in Kings Mountain. The scope of his service was not fully appreciated until I became a physician. Though Dr. John C McGill I had many more advances in medicine at my disposal, the long days and sleepless nights on-call, often ignoring family and one’s own health, advanced my appreciation of his tireless efforts historically provided. The quality of care he provided during his time was exemplary. When I would see him on occasion at home on weekends or training, he would never miss an opportunity for an encouraging word: “Keep it up boy”, “Keep your chin up”. Dr. John practiced in an era when doctors could be physicians, before the days of obstructive bureaucracy, where one’s actions did not require explanation to and approval of an insurance entity. But he provided care for “all comers”. When he was needed he was there, day or night. I have been told that he would even stop on occasion, late night or early morning, for a short nap on the side of the road. Doctors in his time didn’t just simply send their patients to an urgent care or emergency department. They saw them in their office, hospital emergency room or their home, day or night. “On call” and “off call” were not terms of his day; if you were in town, you were available. ■ MEDITATION In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration Josh Tucker Pastor and was taken St. Matthew’s while Quirinius Lutheran Church was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there,
the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:1-7 Grace to you and peace from the long-expected Christ child, Jesus our Savior and Lord. Amen. It is usually the case that no matter how carefully planned out or how methodical one is in their preparation, travel plans always seem to not go as planned. We forget to pack items we need; the airline overbooks flights and Mother Nature gets in the way of travel schedules. This time of year, and especially with the current state of the oil industry, travel increases. People are traveling to spend time
with their family and friends for the holidays. Young people are going home for Christmas break. And even some take family vacations to spend the holidays in a new setting. But, no matter how hard we try our travel plans often get messed up; we must be patient and remain flexible as we travel. In the story of Jesus’ birth, we see that Mary and Joseph’s travel plans go amuck as well. Can you imagine the scene? The young couple is forced to leave their homes and return to their family hometown to be registered - all of this under the authority of Emperor Augustus so that a tax could be collected from the people. And so they must have been tired from all the travel. They must have been frustrated from all the changes
to their travel plans. And low and behold while they are there, jumping through all the hoops for the Roman government, it is time for Mary to give birth. But their plans are further disordered because they cannot find a proper place in which to give birth that is not already occupied. The only available place that someone is willing to provide for them is a stable where livestock were kept. But no matter how unorganized their plans became, Mary and Joseph continued to find their way. Jesus is born and he is laid to sleep in a feedbox for animals. Sometimes our plans change; sometimes our best organizing is overshadowed by the will of God. It is God who provides our path, who leads us to the coming of the Christ child! Amen.

100th birthday a day for memories Louise Hambright Roberts smiled and chatted with several hundred friends Sunday afternoon at a birthday reception planned by her family. Mrs. Roberts, 100 on December 9, belies her years with her quick wit, youthful appearance and positive attitude. She and her husband, the late Ross Roberts, owned and operated Roberts Grocery in Kings Mountain for a number of years prior to his death. In recent years she has lived with a daughter, in Spartanburg, SC. Longevity runs in the Hambright family of Kings Mountain. Mrs. Roberts' younger sisters, Aileen Cantrell, 97; Bess Phifer of Kings Mountain, 96; Sue Hambright Drye and her brother, Tom Hambright, who live in the Hambright home place near Grover, were as happy as Louise to see the neighbors, church members at Kings Mountain Baptist, garden club members and former grocery store customers. "It was a wonderful day for Mom," said her daughters Linda Tallon and Diane Houston, who planned the event and included pho-

KMHM intern experience ‘mutually beneficial’ Kings Mountain Historical Museum was pleased to host two Museum Interns in 2014; Gardner-Webb University sophomore Sarah Lynch during the spring semester, and Elizabeth Wise, a senior at Belmont Abbey College, during the fall semester. For both students, this was their first experience working in a museum. There are many benefits to interning in a small local museum like Kings Mountain Historical Museum; interns have the opportunity to personally get to know most of the staff and volunteers, and have the chance to be involved in the many different facets of the museum world, such as historic preservation, collections management, exhibit development, historical research, event planning, and visitor services. This real-world practical experience and professional network building can be invaluable to students in their future careers. Perhaps most importantly, museum internships allow students to explore this career path outside of the classroom and see firsthand if this really is the right field for them. “I still treasure my own
Elizabeth Wise worked for the museum during the 2014 fall semester. internship experiences, they were absolutely critical in helping me develop my professional skill set and passion for museum work,” said Director and Curator Adria Focht, who oversees the internship program at Kings Mountain Historical Museum. “We take the mentorship aspect of the internship process very seriously – we want our interns to know that they have an advocate in us to help them achieve their academic and career goals in the long term. As someone who benefited greatly from my own internship work, I
find it extremely rewarding to pay it forward and help nurture the next generation of budding professionals.” Internships are a mutually beneficial relationship; while the students gain academic credit and vital experience, the museum is able to accomplish institutional objectives. Together, Kings Mountain Historical Museum’s interns completed over 240 hours of work this year; they updated thousands of collections database records, and provided needed assistance for exhibits and events.

Unless something is a life or death situation it can always be addressed after the incident occurs. More than anything, get the kids in church. Last are church Pastors. God love them all. They may have the toughest job out there and the least appreciated. They follow a calling of our Lord and Savior. They see and deal with the worst situations of anyone, including Doctors and Nurses. They constantly deal with pain, both physical and spiritual. They encounter broken families and those struggling to stay together. They serve many ways in the communities, even outside their church homes. They see the lost every day and do their best to lead the lost to Christ. Many times they fail and they frequently feel like they personally are failures. God still demands they continue their
work, even while knowing a lot of it will not bear fruit. Thank God for these groups. Thank God for His Son, Jesus Christ. Merry CHRISTmas to all. Reflections: on the loss of a family doctor From Page 1 they raised 5 children, attending to their health, education and spiritual well-being. He influenced the life of many others including myself. His acts were consistently unhistoric, never making the headlines as caring, benevolent and even life-saving actions typically do not. It seems that the only time a doctor makes the news these days is if he has committed a crime or is accused of malpractice. I had the honor of car-
ing for him for the last 3-1/2 years of his life. Though a shell of the person he once was, he always expressed his appreciation for the visits, either in my office or in his home. As his cognitive function declined, I found myself reflecting during our visits; the exceptional life of service, the dedication to his profession and family, the vast amount of knowledge and experience burgled by his dementia. Though Dr. John did not live a “hidden life” as he was always very ac-
tive in the community, his life was dedicated to providing those “unhistoric acts” to the residents of Kings Mountain and the surrounding area. I can’t help but think how many of us would agree that our health and the greater good of the community, have been improved by this man’s life. Lemon juice 3 medium potatoes 8 oz. pineapple 1 medium onion 2 diced bananas 1 quart tomatoes 4 drops red or green food coloring ¾ tsp. crushed basil ¼ c. chopped nuts Brown pork chops. Peel and slice potatoes 1 small jar red maraschino and onions; boil about 5 minutes. Drain. cherries, drained 1 small jar green maraschino cherries, Place tomatoes and basil in bottom of pan. Layer potatoes and onions. Place pork chops drained ½ c. coconut Freeze in cupcake pans lined with cupcake on top. Cover and bake at 350 degrees about 45 minutes or until potatoes are done. papers. Holland of Holland & Hamrick Architects was recommending that Eagle Wood, Inc. receive the total contract award of $2,206,425 and T. C. Strickland Construc-
tion Co. receive the contract award for the Concessions Building and Training House for the Cleveland County Shooting Range at $485,445. As the board began its new year a total of 11 board appointments were made by commissioners.

Harris told the group that “nothing has been decided, the process is early, early” and Forcade said she used the word early a number of times. The developers and the Catawba tribe have submitted an application as a mandatory trust application and that determination is yet to be made, Harris said.

Board: settles on transfer policy change; calendar tweaks proposed From Page 1 “There are still concerns about fairness among many on this board and in the community. Nevertheless, Hoyle and others said the new policy language was a “good compromise.” The board was presented with possible school calendar charges that it will decide on in subsequent meetings. Due to updates, school employees are now entitled to 11 holidays during the school year. The current 2015-16 calendar only designates 10. That means that additional holiday will need to be designated. To that end, the calendar committee, which is composed of parents, teachers and administrators, is proposing two changes: Good Friday is currently a planning day. The committee recommends changing Good Friday from a planning day to an Annual Leave day. The planning day would be eliminated. Memorial Day is currently an Annual Leave Day. The committee recommends changing Memorial Day from an Annual Leave day to a holiday. The Annual Leave day will be moved to Good Friday as described in Option A. State law mandates that the school calendar must contain 215 days total, including workdays, holidays and annual leave. Instructional days can either be 185 days or 1,025 instructional hours. The board heard a presentation from CPA firm Dixon Hughes Goodman regarding its annual audit of
the school board’s finances. The audit reported that the school system’s general fund – essentially, its savings account – had fallen from 2012-13 levels, but was still considered “healthy” … for a “school district of this size.” Auditors also explained that the decrease had been expected by school budget officials, and adjustments had been made. Auditors noted a decline in profitability from food sales, which was accompanied by an overall decline in food sales and an increase in federal food funding. School board members had few questions about the results of the audit, but Roger Harris posed a broad question about whether auditors had uncovered any waste in the budget. Auditors responded by saying they found only insignificant amounts of waste or unnecessary overhead. In an administrative action, the school board members elected Phillip Glover as new chairman of the board. Glover replaces Dr. Jack Hamrick, who has served as chair for three years. Shearra Miller retains her position as the board’s vice chair. The board recognized Burns High School teacher Chad Beam for being a runner-up for the Regional Teacher of the Year Award. An English teacher and Burns graduate, Beam was named the Cleveland County Teacher of the Year for the 2013-14 year. Joining other board members who said Beam had high standards and was
a gifted educator, Richard Hooker praised him for his “enthusiasm” and “passion.” “It’s teachers like you that make a real and lasting positive impact on students,” board member Donnie Thurman, Jr., said. In the public comment segment of the meeting, Jim Richard spoke on behalf of a number of students – including one who attended Kings Mountain Middle School – who claimed to have suffered intense and prolonged bullying this semester. Richards, who came into contact with the children while serving as liaison for a local church, said that the Kings Mountain Middle Schooler had been traumatized so much that she had tried to commit suicide. He also said he had witnessed her hair falling out from the stress of the bullying, and that her grades had gone “from good to bad.” Although board members, as a rule, do not respond to public comments during the course of the meeting, Richards was instructed to meet with Dr. Brian Hunnell, the school district’s director of administrative services. At Monday’s meeting, the board announced plans to videotape each meeting and post the footage with audio on the Cleveland County Schools web site https://sites.google.com/a/ clevelandcountyschools. org/ccs/). The practice will begin in January. “(Videotaping meetings) lends itself to transparency,” said board member Thurman.

Tosaf USA announces first US facility in Bessemer City Tosaf USA, Inc. is planning to locate its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Bessemer City in the next three years, creating 75 jobs in five years and investing $31.1 million. The announcement was made by Gov. Pat McCrory, N.C. Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. The parent company of Tosaf USA, Tosaf Compounds Ltd., is based in Israel and specializes in the manufacturing and marketing of advanced polymers and compounds. The company’s products are used by plastic molders and professors serving a wide range of industries including automotive, medical, electrical and packaging. The Bessemer City facility will be the first entry into the U.S. market. Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual wage for the new jobs will be $38,895. The Gaston County average annual wage is $35,868. The project was made possible in part by a performance-based grant from
the One North Carolina Fund of up to $225,000. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches. “That Tosaf USA would choose North Carolina for its first U.S. manufacturing plant says volumes about what we have to offer,” said McCrory. “Tosaf USA found hardworking employees, a great quality of life and the infrastructure needed to be successful.” “Foreign investment is crucial to growing North Carolina’s economy,” said Secretary Decker. “When companies such as Tosaf USA choose to locate here, it continues to position our state as a good place to do business across the globe.” “It is positive when new and existing industries are able to create jobs for the hardworking taxpayers in North Carolina,” said Rep. Following a brief welcome from the store’s manager that was accompanied by a prayer from a local minister and a message from the mayor, Wal-Mart got down to doing what it does best early Wednesday morning at its Kings Mountain grand opening. Shoppers at the newly minted Neighborhood Market wasted no time hitting the aisles and filling up grocery carts with cola, cereals and baked goods. The outdoor opening ceremonies, which kicked off at 7:30 a.m., were greeted with near freezing temperatures offset slightly by warm English muffins and hot cocoa and coffee served by Wal-Mart vendors. More than 100 early risers – Kings Mountain City Council members, Cleveland County Commissioners and Cleveland
Chamber members among them -- showed up to get a glimpse of the town’s newest full-sized grocery store. There was even a group of eager West School Elementary students on hand to provide a frost-bitten rendition of the “Spar Spangled Banner.” “We look forward to serving your shopping needs,” said store manager Sue Jones, adding that the store employs 93 people. “But more than that, we want to be citizens of this town.” Since construction began, the store has made thousands of dollars in charitable donations to the Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry and the Kings Mountain Fire Department. Globally, Jones pointed out, Wal-Mart has donated more than billion meals to the needy in recent years. Chip Sloan, pastor at First Baptist Church, described the world’s largest
retailer’s arrival in town as a blessing – both to shoppers trying to make ends meet and to the those looking for jobs. Mayor Rick Murphrey told the crowd that the new store opening is the culmination of on and off talks between the city and WalMart. “This is a big day for Kings Mountain’s economy,” he said. Inside, the new store’s wide aisles quickly took on the look of a store in its thousandth day instead of its first. Karen Bell caught the tail end of the opening ceremonies on her way in to shop at the new store. A fan of the discount grocery store Aldi’s Gastonia location and the Wal-Mart in Shelby, she said she was curious what the new store looked like inside. “I like the deals,” she said, looking over a number of grocery items and

Lawing re-elected, board to vote on Faunce rezoning Jan. 13 Doug Lawing was re-elected chairman and Jim Potter was re-elected vice-chairman of the Kings Mountain Planning & Zoning board at the recent meeting. Steve Killian, Planning and Economic Development Director for the City of Kings Mountain, was appointed secretary. The only business of the December meeting was a progress report from developer David Faunce who is seeking to expand the area of Faunce Properties, Inc. located at 813 W. King Street, 809 W. King Street and 811 W. King Street and rezoning it for conditional use office. He reported on a meeting with West Kings Mountain property owners, reiterating that the site for the proposed construction is away from West Mountain Street and close to West King Street to minimize the impact on
Mountain Street’s historical district. No access is proposed to West Mountain Street. The site was surveyed by Ledford & West and designed by landscape architect Fred Blackley. Mr. Blackley and several residents of the West Mountain Street Neighborhood were present for the meeting. Faunce said the proposed construction would be on a heavily traveled corner lot (intersection of Phifer Road and West King Street) that is suitable for business more so than for residential use. The plan includes two driveways approved by NCDOT. Ingress and egress off Mountain Street would not be permitted so as to honor a request from the neighborhood. In his application for rezoning, Faunce said the siting of the buildings preventing ingress and egress off West Mountain, and
heavy landscape buffering on the West Mountain Street side and east side to the property (that will remain zoned for a residential use) creates a business property use harmonious with the existing residential uses in the adjoining neighborhood. The first building of 8,000 square feet would be a maximum height of 25 feet above the curb point of Mountain Street. Buffering and landscaping would be on the front, rear and side yards of the building, according to the application. The planning board will make its recommendation for or against the rezoning of the properties at the Jan. 13, 2015 meeting at city hall. Kings Mountain City Council has the final say on rezoning and will consider the request at the Jan. 27. 2015 meeting at 6 p.m. at city hall.

Ever since the Super SmartMart and the rendering plant closed, folks
have been leaving Fayro in droves, but Honey Raye, with a major assist from her former nemesis, Geneva Musgrave, has come up with a possible solution. It seems a salsa manufacturing factory is looking to relocate, and a company representative is headed to Fayro on a scouting mission. Honey Raye, as the president of the Chamber of Commerce, makes promises that are not to be believed in order to woo the rep to choose Fayro. In fact, Honey Raye has told them that on the very weekend of the rep’s visit, the town just happens to be having their biggest celebration of the year: “Fayro Days,” which includes a craft show, a pet costume parade, a beauty pageant and a huge Civil War battle reenactment. So now it’s up to the citizens of Fayro to quickly make her promises a reality. The biggest hurdle to impressing the salsa representative is staging a Civil War battle reenactment with only 15 participants. Added to this is the dilemma of Twink being so desperate to

Planned blazes provide good training Last week the needs of a general contractor and local fire departments dovetailed together nicely. Wimco General Contractors, which is building a new Dollar General on Shelby Rd., needed an old brick house out of its way. The Kings Mountain Fire Department, for its part, is always looking for a structure to set on fire for training purposes. On Thursday afternoon, after acquiring the proper approval from the state fire marshall and county authorities, firefighters from the city joined volunteers from the Bethlehem Fire Department, the Oak Grove Fire Department and the Grover Fire Department in placing pallets of straw
tinder in the three-bedroom brick house. The training fires are a joint venture between local fire departments and the Cleveland Community College’s fire training department. Just after sundown, the structure was set ablaze and within minutes more than two dozen firefighters were presented with a valuable training exercise, according to Jamie Black, the assistant fire chief for the KM Fire Department. The garage next to the house was also part of the planned blaze. Firefighters, both seasoned and new to the job, practiced ceiling sweep nozzle pattern techniques they would use in a real-life situation where lives and property could
be on the line. By 11 p.m. the site was reduced to smoldering rubble, with the exception of most of the house’s brick walls. It was actually the second night in a row of good practice for local firefighters. The general contractor on the Dollar General had requested a burn of an adjacent building the night before. Black said that most training fires are set during the day, but these two cases were different because of the schedule and time constraints of the contractor for the Dollar General site. “It’s good to have them at night, too,” Black said. “It’s actually fitting because we do encounter a lot of night-time house fires.”

Clark leads Limestone in passing Kings Mountain freshman quarterback Jonathan Clark was the offensive leader for the first-year Limestone Saints in the recently-completed football season. C l a r k broke the starting lineup in the third game of the season and finished CLARK the year with 1,419 yards passing and 10 touchdowns. The Saints finished 3-8. Clark’s best game was against Kentucky Wesleyan, when he hit 21 of 34 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-41 Limestone victory. For the year he hit 121 of 206 passes. Other notes on former Mountaineers: Cedric Thompson is a backup inside receiver for East Carolina’s Pirates, whose regular season is complete but have an upcoming bowl game. Thompson has played in three games and has two catches for 10 yards… Tim Hines had five catches for 32 yards in five games for the Davidson Wildcats. Hines missed many games the past two seasons with injuries… Freshman defensive lineman Chaz Gamble played in six games for North Carolina Wesleyan. He had eight total tackles, including five solos… Redshirt sophomore Ed Hopper played in nine games for UNC Pembroke. He had three unassisted tackles and 17 assists. He had one sack and two tackles for loss. Ed Blackburn was a back-up receiver and special teams player for the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, who were ranked #3 in the nation and won their first ten games before falling to Valdosta State 23-21 in the second round of the national tournament… Kings Mountain freshman James Tillman is off to a good start for the Cape Fear Community College basketball team. Tillman has started one game during the first ten and is averaging 6.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game… Senior guard Brian Brown is averaging 9.9 points per game for the VMI Keydets, who are now playing in the Southern Conference…

Mountaineers sweep Burns in SMAC twinbill Kings Mountain High’s basketball teams swept county rival Burns in a SMAC 2A/3A doubleheader Tuesday night at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium. The Lady Mountaineers placed three players in double figures in a 62-51 win that improved their record to 2-0 in the SMAC and 5-1 overall. The Mountaineers finished fast and ended fast in defeating the Bulldogs 57-38 to even their conference record at 1-1 and their overall mark at 3-3.
Both teams led all the way but had to put on a run at the end of the games to secure the victories. The Lady Mountaineers led 31-17 at halftime and 49-31 going into the fourth quarter. Burns rallied and came within seven points before the KM gals made some big plays on both offense and defense to put the game on ice. Senior Tiffani Thompson led the scoring with 16 points. Kelsey Farmer added 15 and Shaniya Portee 13.
The Mountaineers built an early 7-0 lead while holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the first three minutes of the game. They are juniors Dre Bell and Jake Merchant and seniors Graham Keeter, Tico Crocker, Xavier Johnson, Shawn Adams and Julian Coulter. The Mountaineers tied for third in the SMAC with R-S Central, which also placed seven on the All-Conference team. SMAC and state champion Crest led in All-Conference choices with nine players chosen; and the Chargers also took four of the five excellence awards. According to Sheriff Alan Norman “This time of year attracts more shopping-related criminal activity because of the larger crowds and the extended store hours. These factors and the usual distraction of shopping, creaes a more favorable environment for petty thieves and other offenders. The Sheriff reminds all Cleveland County residents to follow these safety tips:
With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, Attorney General Roy Cooper offers the following tips to help consumers avoid common shopping problems that come up around this time of year. “Giving gifts to others is a huge part of holiday traditions for many families,” Cooper said. “By taking time to make smart decisions you can avoid the unnecessary stress of holiday shopping mishaps.” Buy from stores you know. This will improve the odds that you’ll be able to return or exchange a purchase. To check out a company’s track record, call the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or contact your local Better Business Bureau. Shop safely online, too. Stick to well-established companies with secure web sites (look for a lock icon on the site and a web address that starts with “https”). Get the company’s street ad-

However, taking a few preventive measures can help.” Credit Card Fraud: • Keep a close watch on your credit card every time you use it, and make sure you get it back as quickly as possible. • Never write your PIN number on your credit card. • Never leave your credit cards or receipts lying around. • Shield your credit card number so that others around you can’t copy it or capture it on a mobile telephone or other camera. • Only carry credit cards that you absolutely need. • Shred anything with your credit card number written on it. • If you’re planning to purchase online, make sure the web page where you enter your credit card information is secure through SSL (Secure Socket Layer).
You can tell if the web page is secure by looking for the gold lock or key icon at the bottom corner of your browser window. • If you’re not comfortable submitting your information through the internet, call the seller and give them your information over the telephone.
