Seniors lead KM to 11-2 win over East Burke
Dellinger breaks scoring record, KMHS soccer runs SMAC table Kings Mountain’s Virginia Dellinger set the school scoring record in the Lady Mountaineers’ 9-0 victory over East Burke in the final South Mountain Conference game Wednesday night at John Gamble Stadium. The Lady Mountaineers ran the table in the SMAC, winning all 16 games. They are 18-2-1 overall heading into next week’s state tournament. Dellinger finished the game with three goals and two assists. The game was stopped twice to present her with game balls. She set the single season
record with her 51st goal of the season and now has 102 for her career, which is also believed to be a school record. The previous season record of 50 was set by Ramey Kerns, who is now the head coach at Kings Mountain Middle School and Erik Price’s assistant at KMHS. “Hopefully, Virginia will add to those totals as we move into the playoffs,” noted Coach Price. As usual, Dellinger had plenty of help from all of her teammates. Lindsey Deaver and Natalie Lutz each contributed two goals, and Mackenzie Ramsey and
Abbey Pennington each had a goal on penalty kicks. Cassidy Calhoun, Georgia Moss, Raegan Buchanan and Paloma Dettloff each had an assist. Ashley Rhom and Baylee Marr split time in goal. Heading into Wednesday’s 6 p.m. playoff game at home, the Lady Mountaineers have 143 goals, which is also a school record. The old record was 105. Coach Price said the 143 goals are the most in the state 3A ranks right now. “Hopefully, all of these totals will hold up during the playoffs,” he said.

Hall of Fame induction held The largest class in the 29-year history of the Kings Mountain Hall of Fame was inducted Saturday night at Central United Methodist. Five individuals – Carrie Brinkley Jones, Ryan Hollifield, Daniel Honeycutt, Jake Dixon and Brad Wilson – brought the number of individuals in the Hall to 92; and the state champion 1977 Babe Ruth baseball allstars became the 21st team to be honored. A crowd estimated at over 200 also saw eight deserving KMHS seniors receive college scholarships. They included Max Peterson, Leon Tuttanon, Omar Petty, Gwen Hopper, Dylan Ervin, Miranda Ellis, Brenner Martin and Demetrius Hill. In its existence, the HOF has provided $105,000 in scholarships and athletic projects at KMHS, including the naming of the Donald Parker Gymnasium and Bill Bates Field House as well as donations to lighting at Gamble Stadium, displaying the plaques at Barnes Auditorium, and donations toward the construction of the Brinkley Field House and a new concession stand/restroom facility which will be built between the football and baseball fields. Carrie Brinkley Jones, a former threesport athlete at KMHS and a star volleyball player at Gardner-Webb, was inducted by her sister, Kristie Brinkley Williams, who was her teammate at both schools. Jones still holds some records at both schools. Williams said her sister had a special ability to play under intense pressure. She remembered the time KMHS was playing for its first state championship in 1999. The

Most of the time our gym was standing room only.” Jake Dixon, who turned 80 this week, has given well over 57 years of his life to supporting Mountaineer athletics in numerous ways. He has worn many hats, most notably as clock operator for basketball and football games. “All the time, he did it for nothing,” See HALL OF FAME, Page 3B
It was Senior Night for Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers when they hosted East Burke in the final SMAC game at Lancaster Field. After being recognized along with their parents just before taking the field, the five seniors led the team to an impressive 11-2 victory over the Cavaliers. All five graduating seniors – Austin Gunter, David Gamble, Thomas Lavin, Matt Absher and Will Wilson – played a significant role as the Mountaineers ended their regular season with a perfect home record while taking second place in the conference. Lavin’s sacrifice fly drove in Davis with what would turn out to be the winning run in the bottom of the first inning. Davis walked with one out and took third on John Bell’s double off the right field fence. The Mountaineers blew the game wide open in the second with a seven-run outburst that included three home runs by seniors. To get things started, junior Madisyn Bolin and senior Gamble beat out infield hits to deep short. After a fielder’s choice and wild pitch, Gunter hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Wilson followed with a two-run homer over the center field fence. After Davis singled and Bell walked, Lavin homered over the left-centerfield fence, and Absher followed with a solo shot over left. East Burke managed its only two runs in the top of the fourth. KM answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on singles by Bell and Lavin, and a walk to Bolin. Gamble drew a walk to plate the run. Kings Mountain tacked on it final two runs in the fifth. Gunter’s leadoff walk was followed by a double to left by Wilson. Davis singled to left to make the score 10-2, and the final tally came home when Lavin reached on a fielder’s choice. Kings Mountain ripped 12 hits with Wilson, Davis, Bell, Lavin and Absher getting two apiece; and Bolin and Gamble adding one each. Absher went the route on the mound. Three of East Burke’s four hits led to their two runs in the fourth. Absher struck out nine and struck out the side in the second. He retired the Cavaliers in order three times.
Spring football to begin Kings Mountain High will begin spring football practice Monday after school. Coach Greg Lloyd said the players will hit the field around 3:45 p.m. The NCHSAA last year approved 10 days of spring practice. Lloyd said the Mountaineers will practice five days a week over the next two weeks. The only way they will practice on Saturday is if they lose time because of bad weather. Any new players interested in going out for football should contact Coach Lloyd.
