City of KM issues water update

In a recent public statement, Dustin Vaughn, Chief Operator of the Kings Mountain Water Treatment Plant, addressed growing concerns and misinformation about the safety of the town’s water supply. Vaughn reassured residents that the water is 100% safe to drink, emphasizing that he and his own family consume it daily.

The taste and odor issues currently affecting the water are due to algae blooms in the lake, specifically compounds known as MIB and geosmin. These naturally occurring substances are harmless to humans and have no known side effects.

Weekly testing by Charlotte Labs and the Division of Water Resources has confirmed the presence of these compounds, which are released when algae cells break down during the treatment process.

Vaughn reported significant progress: levels of the

compounds dropped from 620 ppb on July 15th to 72 ppb by July 29th, nearing the detection threshold of 50 ppb, meaning most residents should no longer notice any taste or odor. He encouraged anyone still experiencing issues to contact the water plant directly via the city website or phone number provided in the video.

Thousands of financially distressed veterans at risk of foreclosure will become eligible for federal assistance under a new program signed into law Wednesday that allows them to defer monthly mortgage payments temporarily without losing their homes.

The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to create a “permanent partial claims program” that gives veterans a second chance to stay in their homes, according to the bill’s supporters.

Under the program, the VA buys a portion of the veteran’s debt and secures a lien on the property, according to the bill. The veteran does not have to pay off the claim until the home is sold or refinanced.

President Donald Trump signed the bill into law at a ceremony attended by Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., who is chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., the bill’s sponsor.

“This bill provides desperately needed relief to veterans and their families who have fallen behind on their mortgages,” Trump said.

The legislation, which passed unanimously in the House and Senate, is expected to help up to 70,000 homeowners with VA-backed loans who are more than three months behind on their mortgage payments, the lawmakers said.

The legislation is intended for homeowners struggling to rebound from financial setbacks, such as a job loss or high medical bills. More than 3.5 million veterans, active-duty service members and surviving spouses hold VA home loans, according to the VA. Van Orden described the legislation as providing “a path to maintain home ownership.”

tool at their disposal to keep their homes and reduce the risk of foreclosure if they fall into financial hardship or endure a national disaster,” Bost said.

The bill helps veterans struggling with higher interest rates that make refinancing difficult, he said. It also protects the taxpayers’ investment in the VA home loan program, Bost said.

The legislation also enables the VA to continue funding not-for-profit community agencies that run homeless prevention programs through the Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program.

The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act was established to replace a home loan bailout program created under the administration of former President Joe Biden that authorized the VA to purchase a veteran’s entire home loan and restructure it at a lower interest rate.

Van Orden and other Republican lawmakers had criticized the bill for its costs, which they said could reach $17 billion if the VA were to purchase 60,000 home loans. The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act enacted Wednesday has the backing of the banking industry, including the Mortgage Bankers Association and the National Association of Mortgage Brokers.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and other veterans advocacy groups also supported the bill.

“This critical legislation represents a profound commitment to safeguarding the financial security and dignity of veteran homeowners, especially during times of hardship,” said James LaCoursiere, national commander of The American Legion.

Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Bill enacted into Law in SC

On July 31, SC Governor Henry McMaster was joined by members of the General Assembly and state agency leaders for a ceremonial bill signing of H. 3276, the South Carolina Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act. The new law prohibits holding or supporting mobile devices with any part of the body while operating a vehicle.

"Distracted driving has claimed far too many lives and caused countless collisions across our state,” said Governor McMaster. “By signing this bill, we will significantly reduce the number of preventable accidents caused by distracted driving, ensuring more South Carolinians make it home safely to their loved ones."

South Carolina's previous

texting-and-driving law prohibited composing, sending, or reading text-based communications while driving. The new hands-free law strengthens restrictions by prohibiting a driver from reading, composing, or transmitting any text, email, app interaction, or website interaction on a mobile electronic device. It also prohibits viewing movies, playing video games, or participating in video calls while driving.

A “mobile electronic device” includes a cellular telephone, portable computer, GPS receiver, electronic game, or any similar standalone electronic device that is used to communicate, display, or record digital content.

“There are life-and-death reasons to hang up the phone.

Just a few seconds can lead to tragedy,” said Representative Bill Taylor. “Over the years, education and advocacy have made driving under the influence a cultural taboo, and my hope is that distracted driving will soon be viewed the same way – reckless, dangerous, and utterly socially unacceptable.”

Violations carry a fine of $100 for a first offense.

Subsequent offenses within a three-year period will result in a $200 fine and the addition of two points to the driver's record.

“We see more injuries and lives lost from distracted driving than from DUIs,” said Representative Tommy Pope. “We must break the habit, because it is taking lives and See LAW, Page 7A

In May 2020, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release announcing that Kings Mountain citizen Jodi Blanton had been arrested for three bank robberies that took place in 2005, two of which involved bomb threats intended to divert police attention.

Four years later, in May 2024, Superior Court Judge J. Lynn Gullett ruled that the entire case against Blanton was built on “falsehoods and misrepresentations” by Investigator Carl Duncan, according to Stateline News as reported on its Meta page. WBTV and other media outlets also covered this story. Judge Gullett’s order indicated that Duncan’s “negligence in preserving evidence” and “intentional misrepresentations” had irreparably harmed Blanton’s right to a fair trial.

a federal lawsuit just over a year after the charges were dismissed, seeking to hold Duncan personally accountable. Blanton is suing under the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments for unlawful search, seizure, and malicious prosecution. She is also alleging several state-level claims, including gross negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Blanton is represented by civil rights attorneys from Pfeiffer Rudolf, based in Charlotte.

In response, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Friday, August 1, indicating that they were aware of recent media reports concerning allegations against Investigator Duncan. The statement noted, “While certain media outlets have reported the filing of a lawsuit related to these allegations, it is important to clarify that neither Investigator Duncan nor the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office has been officially notified or served with any legal action

The press release also stated, “Given the serious nature of these claims, and in accordance with agency protocol, Investigator Duncan— who serves in a part-time capacity—has been placed on administrative leave effective immediately. This action is not a determination of wrongdoing but a necessary step to preserve the integrity of any ongoing review and to maintain public confidence while these matters are addressed.” Sheriff Alan Norman concluded with the following assurance: “The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability. We will fully cooperate with any lawful inquiries or proceedings and will take appropriate action based on the facts and findings as they become available.” As further details about this case emerge, the Herald will keep the public informed.

Looking Back

The Gordon Knots of Families and Politics

Nobody’s going to argue when I say that our country is in a complicated place these days. You can feel it in the news, around the dinner table, even in the grocery store line. And I don’t think anyone would argue with this either: families are complicated, too. Now, mix those two things together—a complicated country and a complicated family—and it gets even trickier. Especially when the folks around the table see the country through different lenses. That’s when things get really complicated.

Are our modern day families so torn up by political differences that gathering around the kitchen island without an

argument around the daily news is more and more uncommon? Is our country now so divided and passionate that we are headed towards another civil war?

I hope not on both counts.

In “Measure of Devotion,” a new novel by Raleigh native Nell Joslin, these complicated, ageold family dynamics play out for the Shelburne family during the Civil War in South Carolina. At first glance, this might seem to be just another Southern novel about the war.

But Joslin is not just telling a Southern story. She weaves a universal narrative that applies to us today. The Shelburnes’ saga is rooted in the past, but echoes powerfully

right now.

Susannah and Jacob Shelburne live in secessionist South Carolina but are quiet abolitionists. Their servants are no longer enslaved, and the Shelburnes consider them their friends and equals. They do not press their anti-slavery beliefs on others, but subtly oppose the widespread Southern culture. Speaking out publicly would put them in danger in their community, so they push back in subtle ways.

As I was pulled deeper into the story, a question gnawed at me. Why were the Shelburnes not more outspoken? Jacob acknowledges early in the novel, “I confess that in this way I am living a lie. But I know no help for it. Though I cannot say I love my state, I do See FAMILIES, Page 5A

Walking On The Road

Walking on the road is generally allowed if there is no sidewalk available. However, some specific roads like highways or interstates usually prohibit pedestrian traffic.

Walking on roads for exercise can be safe if you walk facing traffic. Stay as far to the left as possible. Wear bright or reflective clothing. Be constantly aware of your surroundings. Choose roads with lower speed limits.

You do not always have the right of way. You do in the following situations: Crosswalks, marked or unmarked. Intersections with pedestrian signals. Sidewalks and paths yielding to pedestrians already in the road. Pedestrians must yield on roads without sidewalks where you should walk facing traffic. When traffic signals or police give direction. When entering a roadway from your home or any property.

When visiting Florida in the winter, one or two people are killed every year in a crosswalk.

They had the right of way but they still were killed. It doesn’t matter if you were following the law when you end up dead and no longer able to walk. We’ve had some nice weather recently in our area.

This morning as I drove to the store people were out walking on our small two-lane road. They were jogging on the road and some were walking on the road. One couple was in a very shady spot taking for granted that traffic would see them.

I’ve had a couple of friends hit in recent years One was out walking and was badly mangled but did live with several surgeries and therapy. Another friend was hit and killed. You can’t take for granted that drivers are paying attention. So many drivers today are talking on their cell phones, texting, jiving to music or looking at everything other the road. You can’t depend on drivers to assure you of your safety. We should all drive acutely aware of the road and our surroundings but drivers

make mistakes. A jogger doesn’t want to be in the path of someone who is distracted.

Today, I see kids in our neighborhood riding on mopeds with earplugs in listening to music. They are laughing and having a great time. Then there are the golf carts with kids hanging onto the back of them or ATV vehicles that are illegal on most public roads. An ATV going down the road at dusk with no headlights is a scary sight. Are they able to see you if you are on the road walking? Probably not. The best we can do is our best. If you are going to walk on the road, keep your attention in all directions. Try to move a couple feet off the road until cars pass. Give them plenty of room. This is not the place to “stand your ground.” Don’t listen to music. You need to hear whatever is coming. We all need exercise but not at the risk of death. I’m grateful that I can still walk and jog some. I constantly try to stay aware. As drivers, our job is to slow down a little and drive as cautiously as possible.

FAMILIES

From Page 4A love my home and my farm…. It is a Gordian knot.” The Shelburnes struggle to parent their teenage son Francis, a Confederate sympathizer. Francis only grows more defiant and joins the Confederate army. The metaphorical Gordian knot is tightened by Susannah’s struggle to save her son after he is wounded fighting for a cause she abhors.

How does a beloved son come to embrace a culture his parents spent their life resisting? Part of the answer lies in time and place. He grows up in a world where many voices

around him lift up those very values, even glorifying slavery and war. And like adolescents in every era, he’s itching to push back against his parents. “You think I’m a child. Christ, I cannot wait to be rid of this house and everyone in it,” he tells Susannah as he prepares to war. Sound familiar? Maybe your child didn’t use those exact words. Maybe you didn’t. But chances are, at some point, you’ve heard something close—or said something just as sharp in your own teenage years. It’s part of the long, complicated story of growing up and breaking away. That old metaphor of the Gordian knot still holds power today. We’re living in a time when the tangles

of belief, identity, and loyalty feel impossible to sort out. And it’s not just in the headlines—it’s close to home. We’re neighbors to, and sometimes parents or grandparents of, people who see the world in ways we can’t quite understand. The bonds of family and community haven’t gone away—but they’ve gotten more complicated. If you are struggling with the news of today’s front pages, or if you are disagreeing with a loved one, pick up “Measure of Devotion.” Joslin, via Susannah, reminds us that these complicated struggles—between family, identity, and belief—aren’t anything new. And, spoiler alert: there are no perfect endings to these struggles.

The charges in the indictments are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

According to plea documents and other court filings, De La Cruz-Lopez, who is not authorized to work in the United States, admitted to obtaining employment at Buckeye Fire Equipment using the Social Security Number and personally identifiable information of another individual who is eligible to work in the United States and used that information on false identification documents. The falsified documents included a driver’s license bearing De La Cruz-Lopez’s image and the name of the individual eligible to work in the United States and a copy of the individual’s Social Security card. The defendant, who had been employed at the company since 2022, falsely attested on the I-9 employment eligibility verification form that he was the person presented on the ID and that he was a citizen of the United States.

Below are the seven additional defendants charged as a result of the investigation:

1. Humberto Guzman Lemus, 32, of Mexico, was charged with illegally reentering into the United States. Lemus was previously deported from the United States on December 23, 2019, at or near Hidalgo, Texas, after he was arrested for driving while impaired and failure to stop at a flashing red light. The defendant has pleaded guilty to illegal reentry and is awaiting sentencing.

2. Angel Antonio Lara Reyes, 52, of Honduras, is charged with illegally reentering into the United States. Reyes was previously deported from the United States on November 21, 2014, at or near Brownsville, Texas. The defendant has pleaded guilty to and is awaiting sentencing.

3. Arurto Albarras Altunar, 40, of Mexico, is charged with illegal reentry into the United States. Altunar was previously deported from the United States three times in less than 30 days at or near Laredo, Texas on February 14, 2016, and at or near Hidalgo, Texas, on February 20, 2016, and again on March 8, 2016.

4. Geovany Lopez Lopez, 38, of Guatemala, is charged with illegally reentering the United States. Lopez was previously deported from the United States on May 11, 2011, at or near Columbus, Georgia, after he was arrested for assault on a female, resisting a public officer, and injury to real property.

5. Luiz Antonio Martinez Lopez, 40, of Mexico, is charged with illegal reentry into the United States. Lopez was previously deported from the United States on August 4, 2011, at or near Laredo, Texas, after he was arrested for a traffic law violation. He was deported again on March 11, 2019, at or near Laredo, Texas, after he was arrested for impaired and reckless driving, wanton disregard, and resisting a public officer.

6. Alberto Perez Mendoza, 37, of Mexico, is charged with illegal reentry into the United States. Mendoza was previously deported from the United States three times: on July 15, 2006, at or near Brownsville, Texas, on January 21, 2015, at or near Hidalgo, Texas, and again on January 28, 2015, at or near Laredo, Texas.

7. Enrique Gil Rojano, 52, of Honduras, is charged with illegally reentering the United States. Rojano was previously convicted in California of transporting and/ or selling a controlled substance and was sentenced to three years in prison. He was later arrested again and convicted of felony perjury and was subsequently deported from the United States on September 7, 2005.

The cases announced today are part of Operation Take Back America a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Since the implementation of the initiative, 44 individuals have been charged with immigration related offenses in the Western District of North Carolina.

In making today’s announcement, U.S. Attorney Ferguson credited U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and Emergency Removal Operations for their investigations that led to the charges. U.S. Attorney Ferguson also commended several other law enforcement agencies that assisted in the investigation, to include the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, CBP’s Air and Marine Operations, IRS Criminal Investigation, the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General, the North Carolina National Guard, the DEA, the ATF, King’s Mountain Police, the Gaston County Sheriff’s Department and the Gaston County Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth Smith and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Frick of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte are prosecuting the cases.

Forty-four defendants have been charged with immigration offenses in Western North Carolina since the implementation of Operation Take Back America.

In a culture that often rewards the loudest voice in the room, the story of Barnabas reminds us that encouragement is a sacred ministry. Originally named Joseph, this Levite from Cyprus distinguished himself by his uplifting spirit, earning him a new name from the apostles: Barnabas, meaning “Son of Encouragement.”

We first meet Barnabas in Acts 4:36-37, where he sells a piece of land and lays the

money at the apostles’ feet. His act isn’t about recognition; it’s about generosity fueled by faith. In many ways, his ministry begins not with words, but with quiet sacrifice. As Calvin Miller once wrote, “The greatest preacher is the one who most deeply impresses men... The best Christian workers are those who make the least noise.”

This same spirit is echoed in the hymn, “Make Me a Blessing”: Out in the highways and byways of life,

Many are weary and sad; Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife,

Making the sorrowing glad. Barnabas is a biblical model for all of us—not for his sermons, but for his presence. His encouragement wasn’t just a personality trait; it was a posture of the heart. How can we apply this to our lives right now? Be generous with your encouragement. Speak life into your family. Share a word of affirmation with your church community. In a text, a card, or a simple “I’m proud of you,” you could reflect the spirit of Barnabas.

Many blessings, Jonathan

Southern Arts Society “A Fresh Look” 2025 winners

This is the last week to enjoy “A Fresh Look” art exhibit and competition at Southern Arts Society (SASi) in Kings Mountain. Artists from around the region submitted seventy works of art to be judged for cash prizes. Artists were asked to show their most recent work, taking a fresh look at the world around them. The theme for this show is very open, allowing for a wide variety of subject matters to be entered. Awards were presented Saturday night, June 14th, at our public reception.

Participating Artists are Susan Arrowood, Todd Baxter, Kristin Blank, Ellen Devenny, Pat Edwards, Joan Fogle, Darlene Godfrey, Noah Hartley, Timmy Hord, Kimberlye Joyce, Janet Littlejohn Kaufman, Corrine Kay, Jackie Laine, Emma Kay Lewis, Bonita Lowe, Bertie McClain, Kathleen McDermott, Leonor Demori Neisler, Alex Pietersen, Patricia Pietersen, Danielle Ryan, Ron Shepard, Jean Wilder Smith, Taylor Stump, Pam Underwood, and Austin Walker.

Judging the show was artist and instructor, Wil Bosbyshell of Charlotte, NC. Wil received a BFA and MBA from the University of Georgia and spent six years as an officer in the US Army following his undergraduate education. After a successful business career in the private sector, Bosbyshell was awarded a residency at the Hungarian Multicultural Center in Budapest, which set the course for his artistic career. For close to two decades, he was an arts professor at both the former Art Institute of Charlotte and Rowan/Cabarrus Community College. Wil’s work has been shown in numerous galleries and community exhibitions, including The McColl Center, Shain Gallery, Central Piedmont Community College, and Elder Gallery, where his participation in the 2018 group exhibition Vicarious received critical acclaim from the New York Times. His work can be found in dozens of private and corporate collections locally and nationally.

Here are the awards with Judges Comments

• 1st PLACE – Kristin Blank

“Dawn After the Storm” oil

This painting is successful in several ways. The unconventional subject of a metal trailer draws the viewer’s attention. The contrast in values allows for dramatic highlighted areas. The composition and perspective are excellent.

• 2nd PLACE – Todd Baxter “Sweet Jane” oil

This oil painting jumps off the wall! Great use of cropping and divine proportion in the composition. Nice use of static elements like the life pre-

harming our citizens. If we can deter people from driving while distracted, we can prevent tragedy.”

Exceptions to this hands-free law include drivers who are lawfully parked or stopped, using a device in voice-activated or hands-free mode, using a mobile device for audio content like navigation, music, or podcasts without holding it, or reporting traffic accidents, hazardous conditions, or medical emergencies to a public safety official.

The bill goes into effect on September 1, 2025, with a 180-day warning period to allow drivers time to adjust before full enforcement begins on February 28, 2026. "It is important to know the troopers and officers of the Department of Public Safety, working with our local law enforcement partners, will strictly enforce this law," said S.C. Department of Public Safety Director Robert Woods. "By requiring people to put their phones down and to keep their eyes on the road, we are confident this law will prevent collisions and save lives."

server ring contrasting with the motion implied by the flying bird and moving ropes and wires. Detailed areas draw you in but are used sparingly with large planes of color.

• 3rd PLACE - Pat Edwards

“Amber Waves” pastel

This small pastel landscape uses color and mark making in a masterful way. The motion implied by the moving clouds and waving grasses draw the viewer in. Then the viewer is rewarded by the bold light and color of the distant tree line and mountain range.

MERIT AWARDS (3)

• Taylor Stump “Green, Screened” acrylic

This conceptual painting with sculptural elements hits the right balance between humor and cultural commentary and a subtle health warning. Nice use of gel medium.

• Noah Hartley “First in Flight” oil

This is a wonderfully playful painting that is realistic in its depiction of bird, insect, and flower textures. The dynamic and surreal use of cropping, rotation, and overlap kept your eyes spinning around in joy. Nice pun in the title.

• Kimberlye Joyce “Foxy Loxy” watercolor

Topflight watercolor painting that makes full use of the medium’s strengths: the splatters and great action. The bright white of the paper pushes contrast to exciting levels. The brush work is visible and dynamic.

Police visit KM Rotary

On July 24, KMPD made a visit to Kings Mountain Rotary Club, sharing information about its community policing efforts. Neighborhood watch is a community-based crime prevention program that encourages residents to work together with the Kings Mountain Police Department to reduce crime and improve quality of life in their neighborhoods. The goals of neighborhood watch are to build strong relationships among neighbors, enhance communication with law-enforcement, identify and report, suspicious activity, deter criminal behavior through visibility and awareness.

How the program works:

• Organize your neighborhood:

• Work with KMPD to identify a watch area

• Recruit neighbors, and hold an initial meeting

• Select neighborhood watch captain or coordinator

2. Collaborate with Police

• Officers assist with crime trans and training

• Police attend meetings and offer up support

• Communication is ongoing vehicles, emails, or community alerts

3. Take action together

• Share contact information among members

• Report suspicious activity immediately

• Conduct neighborhood cleanups and safety walks Roll of the Kings Mountain Police Department:

• The Kings Mountain Police Department is committed to

• Supporting neighborhood

watch groups:

• Providing crime prevention, education, offering security surveys, and patrol support,

• Maintaining open lines of communication.

KMPD reminded club members that neighborhood watch is not a vigilante group. It is a proactive preventative partnership between the citizens and law enforcement.

The benefits of neighborhood watch include lower crime rates, safer streets and homes, stronger sense of community, faster response to suspicious activity, and improved emergency preparedness.

Both the Chief and Assistant Chief spoke during the presentation. Afterward, As-

sistant Chief Lance Hamrick left the room, and the Rotarians were quizzed regarding the clothing Assistant Chief Hamrick was wearing and asking them to describe what they observed.

While the Rotarians did a fairly good job in describing the his clothing, it was a good example of how the more people involved gives officers more details and provides the police with a better overall description of the suspect.

The Kings Mountain Rotary Club thanked KMPD for speaking and was appreciative of the time they took to share how the Neighborhood Watch program deters crime in local communities.

eight students is required to hold a class. Feel free to bring a friend. You should bring your handgun and one box (50 rounds) of ammunition. We will provide eye and ear protection, but you are also welcome to bring your equipment if you prefer. You must be at least 18 years old to take this class by yourself. Patrons 11-17 years of age may take the class with adult supervision. Whether just beginning or you’ve shot a few hundred rounds, you will benefit from this fundamentals class. Sometimes we have the tendency to get complacent in our routines. Complacency often leads to bad habits without us even realizing it. This class will give you the opportunity to have an experienced shooter give you some valuable feedback as you begin this fun, life-long sport.

A NC Concealed Carry Permit is not required to participate. However, this class may be helpful before taking a concealed carry class. Due to a burn risk from ejected brass, do not wear open-toed shoes, loose-fitting clothing, or low-cut tops or tank tops. You may want to wear a hat and sunscreen during range time. Classes are held at Foothills Training Center, at 1642 Pinedale Rd. Cherryville, NC 28021 and Foothills Range, at 283 Fielding Road, Cherryville, NC 28021. Both are located on HWY 150, halfway between Shelby and Cherryville.

At least one day before coming to the class, first-time patrons must watch a safety video and submit a waiver. This can be done easily on our website at www.foothillspublicshooting.cc/waiver.

Nifty Golf Gadgets That Can Help Older Golfers

Dear Savvy Senior,

Can you recommend some good golf gadgets that can help older golfers? I like to walk the course when I play but I have some back problems that make stooping over to tee-up or retrieve the ball difficult, and some hand arthritis that make gripping the club painful. Fragile Golfer

Dear Fragile,

There are actually a wide variety of adaptive golf equipment that can help older golfers who struggle with arthritis, injuries or mobility problems. Here’s a rundown of some of the different types of golf equipment you can purchase that can help with many different needs.

Upright Golf Products

For golfers with back, hip or knee problems, there are several different products on the market that will allow you to tee up the ball (and retrieve the tee) from an upright position without having to bend or stoop over. To find these stoop-proof devices see Zero Bend Golf (ZeroBendGolf.com, $80), Reacher Golf (ReacherGolf.com, $65), Tee Pal Pro (TeePalLLC.com,

$79), Joe’s Original Backtee (UprightGolf.com, $20) and Toss Tees (TossTee.com, $15.50).

Many of these same companies also offer accessory products for retrieving the ball from the ground or cup, repairing divots, marking the ball on the green, or picking up a club, sand rake or flag stick off the ground, all without bending over.

Gripping Solutions

Gripping a golf club can also be challenging for golfers with hand arthritis or those who have hand or elbow injuries. To help alleviate this problem there are specially designed golf gloves and grips that can make a big difference.

Some good gloves to consider include the Bionic Golf Glove (BionicGloves. com, $18 to $33) that has extra padding in the palm and finger joints to improve grip. And the Eagle Claw (The-Eagle-Claw.com, $50), which includes a golf glove and a plastic claw that fits over you thumb and index finger to lock the club to your hand.

Another gripping solution is to get oversized grips installed on your clubs. These can make gripping the club easier and more comfortable and are also very good at absorbing shock. Oversized grips are usually either one-sixteenth-inch or one-eighth-inch larger in diameter than a standard grip, and cost around $10 per grip. You can find these grips and have them installed at your local golf store or pro shop.

Low Vision Golf Balls

If diminished vision from cataracts or eye problems makes locating the ball difficult, Chromax golf balls (ChromaxGolf.com) can help. These are reflective colored golf balls that make them appear larger and brighter. Cost: $11 for a three-pack.

Age-Friendly Golf Carts

For older golfers who like to walk the course, there are ergonomically designed golf carts that are lightweight and easy to push or pull. Brands like Sun Mountain (SunMountain.com), Bag Boy and Clicgear (Clicgearusa. com) offer a variety of three and fourwheeled push/pull carts that are highly rated for function and foldability.

Costs typically range between $280 and $350.

There are also remote electric caddies that will transport your clubs around the course for you as you walk. Some top brands include Stewart Golf (StewartGolfusa.com), Motocaddy (Motocaddy.us) and MGI (MGIgolf.com). These run anywhere between $1,000 and $3,500.

Or, for people with severe mobility loss, there’s a specialized electric golf cart called the SoloRider (SoloRider. com). This provides mobility challenged golfers the ability to play from a seated or standing-but-supported position. Retailing for $16,500, plus a $600 shipping fee, this cart is lightweight and precisely balanced so it can be driven on tee boxes and greens without causing any damage. Federal ADA laws require that all public golf courses allow them.
