It was an evening of family fun, games, education, demonstrations, and communal spirit celebrating our police and community partnership.

■ OBITUARIES

Ronald “Eugene” Short

GROVER, NC – Ronald “Eugene” Short, age 61, of Grover, NC, peacefully returned to his eternal home on August 7, 2025, at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby, NC.

Born on January 19, 1964, in Cleveland County, he was the beloved son of the late Johnny Ray and Shirley Perry Short.

Ronald is now reunited with his son, Ronald Eugene Short Jr., and other cherished family members.

Affectionately known as “Jesus Man” to those whose lives he touched, Ronald devoted himself to sharing the gospel and the love of Christ. His heart overflowed with passion for evangelism, and he carried this mission into every interaction, gracefully spreading joy and hope wherever he went. He briefly shared his message of faith with listeners at WKMT and found immense fulfillment in teaching others about his

Savior.

A skilled auto mechanic, Ronald also worked in textiles, but his true calling was always found in his work for God. Outside of his professional life, he embraced the outdoors with an equal passion—as an avid fisherman and a dedicated gardener, nurturing his plants to yield vibrant vegetables that he generously shared with friends, neighbors, and sometimes even strangers. His garden was not just a source of food, but also a canvas for conversations about faith and fellowship.

A man of simple pleasures, Ronald took delight in his hat collection, particularly his favorite fedora, and mastered the game of checkers—becoming a formidable opponent with only one loss remembered in his family’s recounting of his games. His adventurous spirit shone through his volunteer work at NASCAR races, where he contributed his time and effort to benefit the Shriner’s Children Hospital, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to giving back.

Above all, Ronald’s greatest joy came from his family. Together with his devoted wife Donna, his “Dream Girl”, he embraced the role of husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend with unmatched dedication. He offered his time, love, and support abundantly, truly embodying the spirit of generosity and care

The collision occurred at the intersection of Polkville Road / NC 226 and NC 10, where Ropp's motorcycle collided with a Jeep Cherokee. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol report, the motorcycle was attempting to make a left turn from NC 10 onto NC 226 to travel south. The Jeep Cherokee was traveling north on NC 226. Where do you hear a compliment? Dolly Parton said her husband was receiving a number of compliments from a woman at their local bank. She subsequently wrote the song titled Jolene. In the song she penned these words, “Jolene, please don’t take my man just because you can.” I don’t believe for a minute there was ever any woman who could have snatched up Carl Dean away from Dolly. However, whatever was transpiring made for a great hit song for Dolly. Also, I feel confident that Carl was getting plenty of attention from Dolly at home as well. Or, maybe he wasn’t, who knows?

praise might be. We all like to hear a good word. Most everyone deserves a good word unless you are the Devil. Even he can garner some positive words. He is a hard worker and extremely successful would certainly be in order.

My main point here is that spouses, significant others, should daily hear a good word at home and from each other. Tell your wife she is beautiful, pretty, gorgeous, incredible and more every day. Tell your husband he is handsome, good looking, incredible or something like that every day. If she or he is not then why did you marry them and why do you stay with that woman or man?

A counselor asked a man if he woke up grumpy? He replied, “No, I just let her sleep.”

Where does your husband or wife receive their compliments, admiration and affirmation? Do they receive it at home or from someone at the bank, the grocery store, Walmart, church, gym or neighbor? We all like a good word. It’s nice to hear we look good, or that we are appreciated, admired or whatever the

Most likely you told your wife often years ago that she was pretty, special, awesome and more when you first met and married. Or, you may have said similar meaningful words to your husband. Have you stopped? When was the last time you really connected with your spouse between his or her ears? Maybe you got discouraged and gave up because it wasn’t reciprocal. Too often and so many times I have heard couples cut each other down to the

core. Every word was negative about the other. Criticism toward the other was abundant. Sadly, these couples never ever sweetened up toward each other. This is so sad for such couples. In most of these scenarios these couples eventually sought others to hear a good word.

Regardless if you have been with your mate for ten days or 50 years there should be a good word toward the other every day. “I appreciate you. You make my life better. You are still handsome, beautiful, etc.”

Don’t take your mate for granted. We all do to some extent, but life is short. On some level, when she or he is gone you miss that person.

If you seriously think it’s beneath you to change your ways and uplift your spouse daily then you need to examine yourself, your heart and your relationship. Don’t spend your life with someone you can’t cherish, admire and love. Maybe your spouse isn’t as gorgeous or handsome after 30 years. Our bodies change, but beauty and love are deeper than skin.

Think about it. We can all do better.

Since its start in 1984 with porch lights and neighborhood block parties, National Night Out has

grown into a nationwide movement. But the heart of it remains the same: neighbors coming together with a shared purpose—to push back against crime, build trust, and strengthen the bonds that connect us.

Our continued success in Kings Mountain depends on the strength of these partnerships. Public safety is not something the police can achieve alone. It takes the collective effort of resi-

Where to Find Senior Discounts in 2025

Dear Savvy Senior, My husband and I are in our 50’s and would like to know what resources you recommend for locating senior discounts, and what age do they kick in? Frugal Fay

Dear Fay,

One of the great perks of growing older in America is the many discounts that are available. There are literally thousands of senior discounts on a wide variety of products and services including restaurants, travel and lodging, entertainment, retail, health, grocery stores, automotive services and much more. These discounts – typically ranging between 5 and 25 percent off – can add up to save you hundreds of dollars each year.

So, if you don’t mind admitting your age, here are some tips and tools to help you locate the discounts you may be eligible for.

Always Ask The first thing to know is that most businesses don’t advertise them, but many give senior discounts, so don’t be shy about asking.

You also need to know that while some discounts are available as soon as you turn 50, many others may not kick in until you

turn 55, 60, 62 or 65.

Search Online Because senior discounts frequently change and can vary depending on where you live and the time of year, the internet is the easiest way to locate them.

A good place to start is at TheSeniorList. com (click on the “Money” tab), which provides a large list of discounts in restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, and for prescription medications, travel and more.

You can also search for discounts by provider. Go to any standard search engine like Google or Bing and type in the business or organization you’re curious about, followed by “senior discount” or “senior discount tickets.” Or use an AI tool like Chat GPT or Gemini to do a search.

If you use an iPhone, you can even use the “Senior Discounts & Coupons” app (available in the App Store), which categorizes discounts by age and type.

Join a Club

Another good avenue to senior discounts is through membership organizations like AARP, which offers its members age 50 and older a wide variety of discounts through affiliate businesses – see AARP.

org/ViewMyBenefits.

If, however, you don’t like or agree with AARP, or don’t want to pay the $15 membership fee, there are other organizations you can join that also provide discounts like the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC.us), the American Automobile Association (AAA.com), or for retired federal workers, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE.org).

Types of Discounts

Here’s an abbreviated rundown of some of the different types of discounts you can expect to find.

Restaurants: Senior discounts are common at restaurants and fast-food establishments – like Chili’s, Denny’s, Golden Corral, Outback Steakhouse, McDonald’s and Sonic – ranging from free/discounted drinks to discounts off your total order.

Retailers: Many thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army, and certain retailers like Joann, Kohl’s, Michaels, Ross, Petsmart and Walgreens stores offer a break to seniors on certain days of the week.

Supermarkets: Many locally owned gro-

cery stores offer senior discount programs, as do some chains like BI-LO, Piggly-Wiggly, Fry’s, New Seasons, Fred Meyer and Hy-Vee, which offer discounts on certain days of the week.

Travel: American, Delta and United Airlines provide discounted senior fares for select destinations in the U.S. to passengers 65 plus, while British Airlines offers AARP members $65 off economy seats. Amtrak provides a 10 percent discount to travelers over 65. Most car rental companies give discounts to 50-plus customers or AARP members. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival cruise lines offer senior rates to cruisers 55 and over. And, most hotels offer senior discounts, usually ranging from 10 to 30 percent.

Entertainment: Most movie theaters, museums, golf courses, ski slopes and other public entertainment venues provide reduced admission to seniors over 60 or 65. And the National Park Service offers a lifetime senior pass for those 62 and older for $80.

Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

Becoming a Barnabas: Believing in people when others don’t

Acts 9:26-28

Last week, we started a four-part series on Becoming a Barnabas. This “Son of Encouragement” was not only giving of his financial resources, but he also offered his time and reputation to make Christ known and to encourage others. In Acts 9:2628, we see how Barnabas helped the Apostle Paul, formerly Saul, gain acceptance when many didn’t

believe his surrender to Christ.

“When he came to Jerusalem, he (Paul) tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.”

Only Barnabas believed in Saul and brought him to the apostles, advocating for him when others kept their distance. What courage it must have

taken to stand by someone with such a dangerous reputation! Barnabas didn’t let fear or popular opinion get in the way. He saw what God was doing in Saul’s life and joined it.

In the words of the worship song “He Knows My Name”: I have a Maker / He formed my heart

Before even time began / my life was in His hands

To be a modern Barnabas is to be someone who sees people through God’s eyes—not as their past defines them, but as grace redeems them. “Christ believed in the unlovable, touched the un-

touchable, and trusted the untrustworthy. And He calls us to do the same.” (accredited unknown)

Modern application: Is there someone in your life who needs a second chance? Have others written someone off? Speak up for them. Stand beside them. Encourage their next step.

Barnabas shows us that one act of belief can change someone’s future. Without Barnabas, there may never have been a Paul. C.H. Sprugeon “A true shepherd leads not only by truth, but by belief in the sheep’s potential in Christ.”

FDA removes pause for vaccine use

On August 6, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) removed its recommended pause in the use of the Ixchiq (Chikungunya) vaccine and required new labeling requirements. On May 9, the FDA is-

sued a safety communication informing the public that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) jointly recommended a pause in the use of Ixchiq (Chikungunya Vaccine, Live) in

individuals 60 years of age and older while the Agencies investigated post-marketing reports of serious adverse events, including neurologic and cardiac events, in individuals who have received the vaccine.

At the time of the May 9 recommended pause, FDA conveyed its intention to conduct an updated benefit-risk assessment for the use of Ixchiq in individuals 60 years of age and older. FDA has completed an updated benefit-risk assessment of Ixchiq, including for use in individuals 18 years of age and older. Based on the available data and its benefit-risk assessment, the FDA removed the recommended pause in the use of Ixchiq in individuals 60 years of age and older and has approved updates to the Prescribing Information and Patient Information that the company, Valneva Austria GmbH, was required to provide. The November 9, 2023, approval of Ixchiq included a warning in the Prescribing Information informing that the vaccine may cause severe or prolonged chikungunya-like adverse reactions. Ixchiq contains a live, weakened version of the chikungunya virus and may cause symptoms in the vaccine recipient similar to those experienced by people who have chikungunya. See VACCINE, Page 8A

Avoiding certain ingredients, like saturated fats and added sugars, and choosing foods known for their nutritional benefits is one way individuals can utilize diet to live healthier. Although such foods cannot entirely eliminate risk for certain diseases or make a person invincible, eating more of them certainly can benefit individuals’ overall health.

• Kale: Kale long has had a place on healthy eating lists. Kale is a good source of vitamins A, C and K, and also contains alpha-linolenic acid, which is an omega-3 fatty acid. According to Britannica, studies show kale can help combat heart disease and cancer, and also boost eye health by reducing risk for cataracts and macular degeneration. Kale is not the only dark, leafy green vegetable that has earned superstar status. Swiss chard, spinach, collard greens, and turnip greens are equally beneficial.

• Berries: There is strong antioxidant capacity associated with berries that helps reduce the risk of heart disease and other inflammatory conditions, says Healthline. Honey is one of the most appreciated and valued natural products, according to the study “Honey and Health: A Review of Recent Clinical Research,” published in 2017. Since ancient times, honey has been used therapeutically due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative effects.

• Walnuts: Studies have found that those with higher nut consumption have improved cardiovascular risk factors and lower rates of cardiovascular disease. Nuts are an important part of the Mediterranean diet, which has been found to be heart healthy as well, according to Harvard Health. Walnuts are a particularly good choice for lowering LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and apoprotein B (a protein linked to cardiovascular disease).

Teff is high in the nutrients iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium, and vitamin C. Teff also contains ample protein and fiber. Free training for direct support professional workforce members

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) have partnered to launch an Advanced Training Certificate program for current Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) or people interested in pursuing a career in the field. The DSP workforce is crucial in helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live, work, and thrive in the communities of their choice. They provide a wide range of support services, from daily tasks such as bathing, eating, and taking medications to connecting people with community resources and employment opportunities.

“This partnership with North Carolina’s Community Colleges will strengthen and retain our direct support professionals workforce,” said NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. “The advanced training certificate provides an opportunity for individuals to obtain new skills and training to support this critical profession that cares for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in North Carolina.”

The pilot program is being offered free of charge through the continuing education programs at Stanly Community College, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, and Forsyth Technical Community College, beginning in August or September. It may expand to more community colleges in 202627.

The certificate consists of two eight-week continuing education courses. The sessions will be offered virtually, making it easier to

participate and expanding access to individuals not located near one of the pilot college campuses.

The certificate is geared toward current DSPs looking to enhance their skills, but is also available to anyone interested in pursuing a career in the field. Individuals interested in earning the certificate should contact the continuing education office at their preferred campus for registration information and the schedule. Space in each course is limited.

“North Carolina’s community colleges are proud to partner with NCDHHS to launch this vital training program that not only addresses the state’s growing need for direct support professionals but also opens doors to longterm career opportunities in behavioral health,” said Dr. Jeff Cox, President of the North Carolina Community College System.

“Through this collaborative effort, we’ve developed a statewide curriculum that promotes credit mobility, expanded faculty capacity, and aligned training with real workforce needs. This is exactly the kind of responsive, student-centered programming that makes our colleges such powerful engines for community well-being and economic advancement.”

The certificate program is part of an NCDHHS commitment to address the critical shortage of DSPs who provide in-home care and community-based services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in North Carolina. In September 2024, NCDHHS launched a campaign targeting high school and community college students, as well as individuals who are unemployed or underemployed,

to educate and motivate them to consider a career in human services. As part of its Direct Support Professional Workforce Plan, NCDHHS awarded $3 million in grants to more than 140 provider agencies and employers of record this year. These funds were used to recruit, support, train, and retain DSPs through hiring and retention bonuses, on-the-job training, and childcare assistance.

“These efforts reaffirm NCDHHS’ dedication to enhancing opportunities for North Carolinians with I/DD by creating a more accessible and supportive community,” said Kelly Crosbie, MSW, LCSW, Director of the NCDHHS Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services. “DSPs are essential to building a comprehensive system of care that promotes inclusion and connectivity.”

DSPs are an integral part of the NCDHHS’ Inclusion Connects Program, a collaboration among the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services, as well as Medicaid, to provide resources for connecting individuals with I/DD to services and supports. Visit the Inclusion Connects website at https://www. ncdhhs.gov/about/departmentinitiatives/inclusion-connects to learn about the work plan and sign up for the NCDHHS Inclusion Connects newsletter.

For nearly 20 years I have been going to Missouri to hunt during the first week of November. My schedule has always been the same. Arrive one morning, hang a tree stand late that morning, and hunt that afternoon. I like for my first hunt to be in the afternoon so that everything is situated before climbing my stand in the dark, for the next morning hunt. When I’m there, I usually spend most hours of the day in a stand. So, comfort is essential. For years, however, comfort was essential only if it didn’t cost me anything. I used inexpensive climbing sticks and tree stands. But in reality, I paid dearly as I usually sat in pain and awkwardness the whole time. And there is nothing more miserable than doing what you love, in pain. I did that until I realized how my cheapness was ruining this incredible experience. I decided to save my money and get what I needed to hunt in comfort. Thank God for my Rivers Edge Big Foot Tree Ladder and my Millennium Monster Hang-On Tree Stand. I mention names not because I’m sponsored. I’m not. But because they are the comfort duo that I love. And what a difference an all-day stay makes now. I no longer dread the long days in the woods. Comfort costs. Sometimes, however, pain has greater benefits. There’s a quote that has been front and center in my mind for the past year or so. It’s from Gary Brecka. He says, “Aging is the aggressive pursuit of comfort.” He says this not as comfort to be something pursued but as something to fight against as you grow older. The truth is, as we age, we are drawn to comfort – to ease. We have worked hard, and we want retirement. We have struggled, fought, and paid our dues. Now we just want to hunt in the mornings and play pickleball in the afternoon. And while it’s a worthwhile goal to be comfortable financially; health wise, comfort is a killer. Pain is power. Pain pushes muscle and mind and prevents atrophy of both. But pain also has spiritual benefits. First, it provides an opportunity for God to comfort us. Secondly, it provides the ministry God gifted us for. And thirdly it gives us the message God has for the people we are to minister to. Here’s how Paul described these three. “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” (2 Corinth 1:3-4 NLT) There you have it. The reason for our pain is so that we can be a comfort to others, as God has comforted us in our pain. So, you see, there is both purpose and power in our pain. In most things, embrace pain. It will keep you physically and spiritually young. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org
