trying to keep his shoes clean. When we finally got out there, he looked at my heifer and asked how much I wanted for her. I told him he didn’t want that one and pointed to others. But he insisted. So, I told him that I wouldn’t take a penny less than $75.00. He pulled out cash money and paid me on the spot. He put it in his car and off he went. “When C.S. got back, I told him a man had come by wanting to look at cows. He asked if he bought any and I said he had. see he was all dressed up? He would have paid $100 easy.’ Well, that’s when I decided I wasn’t cut out to be in the trader business, so I went into medicine instead,” he said. Dr. Plonk grew up with nine siblings on a farm between Kings Mountain and Cherryville. His education took him from a one-room Plonk schoolhouse, to Kings Mountain High School, to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, to Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, to the University of Pennsylvania, finally receiving his certificate from the American Board of Surgery declaring that he was a Board-certified surgeon in 1952. He served two years in the US Army during World War II as a physician in Europe, then worked in general practice in Murphy, NC and Raleigh, NC until he returned to Kings Mountain in 1957 to become Kings Mountain Hospital’s first resident surgeon. Dr. Plonk witnessed profound changes in the field of medicine during his lifetime, including the transition of back country medicine to professional doctors making house calls, the development of life-saving vaccines and antibiotics, advances in cancer-fighting medications, as well as witnessing Kings Mountain Hospital grow from a 24bed facility in 1951 to the full service, state of the art hospital that it is today. ible Medical History of Kings Mountain exhibit, celebrated the 95-birthday of Dr. Plonk. During his career, Dr. Plonk tended and mended the citizens of this region as one of its most respected doctors for over forty years. Dr. Plonk opens the interview by talking about the doctors that came before him, namely Dr. James Wright Tracy and his role in founding the City of Kings Mountain. He also describes the doctors of his childhood. At 100 years old, Dr. Plonk still knows how to tell a good story. He earned a good education and saw the world while serving his country. He returned to Kings Mountain and raised a family and he served the community here during his long career in medicine. The Plonk family, including children Carole, Peggy, George, Barbara, and Becky will gather for their birthday celebration this weekend. And you can be sure, he has more stories to tell.
