he 2014-15 school year at Wayland Baptist University is underway. It is hard to believe that the new semester is already upon us! Initial indicators are that this term will be a good one for the WBU family. Every fall brings new possibilities and opportunities, and our faculty and staff are excited about the prospects of the coming semester. Wayland exists not only to teach our students about the wonderful world in which we live, but to encourage and enable them to find their place in God’s plan for their life.

All who serve at the university continue to be thankful for God’s evident and obvious blessing upon this institution.

I know you are aware that the face of higher education in America is changing in significant and unprecedented ways.

There is a concerted effort to devalue the importance of a traditional liberal arts education such as that offered at Wayland. Business, industry, and institutional leaders, however, still tell pollsters that they want to employ individuals who have what a WBU education provides: a general knowledge base of a wide variety of subjects (general education core curriculum); an ability to think critically; an understanding of the importance of healthy and vibrant interpersonal relationships; and, finally, a realization of the fact that the world in which we live is now truly a global community.

Small private schools, especially those with elevated tuition rates, will face difficult and challenging times. One article I read estimated that a significant number of those schools will have to close their doors in the next 6 years because of declining enrollment possibilities. For the second year in a row, Moody’s has rated the economic outlook for the higher education sector in America as “negative.” Wayland’s tuition is among the least expensive in the

nation, and our pricing structure places us in a strong competitive position in what has become an increasingly dynamic and changing educational market.

Traditional resource streams are diminishing in significance.

In Washington, D.C., the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act promises to be a long and difficult struggle. Pell Grants, awarded by the national government to students who demonstrate the greatest financial need, will be questioned and examined and questioned again.

In Texas, the new legislative session next year means another round of affirming and defending the importance of the Tuition Equalization Grant program.

The Baptist General Convention of Texas will contribute fewer dollars to Wayland’s support during their next budget cycle. Giving to national and regional denominational associations, like the BGCT, is in decline across the nation. With smaller offerings coming in, Texas Baptists will have fewer dollars to contribute to affiliated ministries like Wayland.

In spite of these challenges, I firmly believe that Wayland Baptist University has an incredibly bright future. Throughout her history, this university has found ways to adapt whenever changes are needed. From my perspective, we are remarkably creative and nimble. We have discovered how to move forward in spite of challenges and obstacles. I have unwavering confidence in the folks with whom I work. These are individuals who are experts in their field of knowledge, and they are committed to helping Wayland flourish.

This means that your support is very important to us. With fewer resources coming from outside sources, we must build and grow our internal—family—support.

Thanks for all that you have done and all that you will do.

Dr. Ken Mattox is going strong as Chief of Staff at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston

A

sk Dr. Kenneth Mattox if he plans to retire anytime soon and his answer is simple: “Sure,” he says. “As soon as I don’t enjoy going to work, I’ll just not go.”

The 75-year-old world-renowned surgeon is still going strong and shows no signs of slowing. As Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston, Dr. Mattox has received numerous recognitions and awards throughout the years. He is a distinguished Service Professor of the Micheal E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

He has been a visiting professor or consultant at more than 800 medical schools, hospitals or health care systems. He is a member of 30 professional organizations, is past president of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, secretary-treasurer of the

DeBakey International Surgical Society, past president of the Houston Surgical Society and the Texas Surgical Society.

He has been listed in Best Doctors in America and Best Doctors in Houston.

He has received several distinguished surgeon awards.

Dr. Mattox has served on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Houston, Doctors’ Club of Houston, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Southeast Texas Trauma Regional Advisory Council, the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors and the John P. McGovern Museum for Health and Medical Science. He is currently Vice President-Elect of the American College of Surgeons. He is also an honorary member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand.

He has written more than 15 books, 600 scientific articles and “about 1,000 abstracts,” and has a ground breaking surgical procedure named after him. He is well-versed in the politics of Medicare

and Medicaid, and in the escalating costs of healthcare and how it is being affected by the Affordable Healthcare Act. He has worked with politicians and dignitaries, consulted on the shooting of President Ronald Reagan, is on call every time a President of the United States visits the Houston area, and he set up the

medical clinics in the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina evacuations.

Dr. Mattox reads constantly, likes to travel and enjoys simple things like dinner with friends at a quiet eatery.

He has thoroughly researched points of interest such as the JFK assassination and the death of Princess Diana – and he can offer a compelling opinion on how

And these are just a few of his accomplishments.

Not bad for a kid from rural Arkansas who went to college because he wanted to sing.

The Beginning Kenneth Mattox was born in White Oak, Ark., in October of 1938.

Located about 19 miles from Ozark, White Oak had a population of 15 people. It had one school, one teacher, one church where congregants learned to sing using shaped notes in the hymnal.

“Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians all met on alternate days,” Mattox said.

His dad earned 50 cents a day chopping cotton — ­ work that was seasonal.

One day, the work ran out. Mattox and his parents loaded up with another couple and their child to head to California in search of jobs.

“Six people and a dog named Trouble …” Mattox said.

With everything they owned piled on a trailer, the couples set out for a new life on the West Coast.

Somewhere in Arizona the trailer hitch broke, shattering all their glass belongings when the trailer detached. But that was the least of their troubles. One of the men smoked and with the trailer firmly chained to the car, one of his discarded cigarettes set the contents on fire. When they finally reached their destination they had nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

Mattox’s dad worked as a migrant farmer for six years before finding a job with an oil company and working his way up through stops in El Paso and Clovis. While in Clovis, Mattox was introduced to Wayland’s International Choir.

“The International Choir had come to our church at one time when I was a senior, early in the year,” Mattox said. “I thought that might be an interesting place to go. I went off to Wayland and auditioned for the choir and got a scholarship.”

Mattox was intent on earning a religion degree and as such decided to get his required science courses out of the way early. A course in zoology and a sudden distaste for hypocrisy soon led him to discover a love for science.

“I just fell in love with it and changed my major,” Mattox said. “I was also in the dorm with a bunch

of folks who didn’t like zoology.

They were really kind of basic in their thinking. Because I liked zoology, they would come to my room and think that I was an atheist.”

Because he exhibited a love for an academic discipline that embraces evolution, Mattox said the religion students came to his room and prayed for him “because I was obviously a bad guy,” he said.

“But I also knew about their personal lives,” he said. “I said these guys were hypocrites. If I stay in religion, I am going to have to live with these guys for the rest of my life.”

Mattox changed his major and focused on pre-medical courses. He had to drop out of choir because of his course work.

A bout with the Asiatic flu while in school also changed his life.

While going to the nurse’s office he met and fell in love with June Dickey, BS’58, his bride of 55 years, who was working toward a bachelor’s degree in science. Mattox completed his course work at Wayland and entered medical school at Baylor in 1960. June followed and the two were soon married.

Medical Practice Interrupted Dr. Mattox completed medical school and as was the process at the time, started an internship.

He was working with Dr. Michael DeBakey when a letter from the Selective Service arrived asking him to report to the U.S. Army. DeBakey, who was close friends with Lyndon Johnson, told Mattox not to go, that he was needed in the residency.

He asked Mattox to give him the letter and that he would take care of it.

About two months later Mattox received a second letter questioning whether or not the first letter was lost and reissuing the orders to report to the U.S. Army. Mattox showed it to DeBakey who again said he would take care of it.

“About two weeks later I got a letter that said we offered you a commission as a captain in the U.S. Army where you will be an officer. You have obviously ignored our first two letters. You have 24 hours to accept this commission or it is not beneath us to draft you as a private,” Mattox said. “I didn’t talk to Dr. DeBakey. I just said, ‘Yes, sir.’”

Dr. Mattox spent two years in the Army before returning to his medical practice.

Life as a Surgeon A real-life Dr. House of trauma surgery, Dr. Mattox loves the challenge. Popularized in a television

drama, the fictional Dr. House was always solving medical mysteries that others could not solve.

Likewise, Dr. Mattox enjoys the challenge of complex issues.

“It’s not easy if only simple things come in,” he said. “The group of people I have recruited and myself are really relaxed by the most complex of complex surgical problems. We like the toughest of the tough.”

Mattox made a name for himself in trauma surgery as a budding young surgeon. He had just finished his fourth year of residency when faced with a particular issue that needed an out-of-the-box solution. A patient who had been shot by his girlfriend was brought into the trauma center.

“He was not a real good hombre,” Mattox said matter-of-factly.

“He had been operated on two or three times before for stab wounds.”

The previous surgeries and operations had left the patient with a distorted anatomy and

significant scar tissue that made it impossible for Mattox to repair the damage to his aorta in a traditional manner. While Mattox had performed a number of surgeries in his first four years, his assistant that day wasn’t a surgeon. He was a neurologist.

“I looked at him and said, ‘Don, I don’t know if we are going to be able to get back there to where I think the aorta is injured because of all these adhesions,’” Mattox said. “We are going to have to think up an operation.”

Mattox decided to work toward the aorta from the back side, shifting the internal organs in order to find the damaged area. The man’s injuries included damage to the kidneys, duodenum, pancreas, aorta and spleen. “[The bullet] got everything all the way across. You add that up and the mortality rate is somewhat over 125 percent,” Mattox smiled. “The mortality rate of an aortic injury itself even today is around 60 percent.”

saving the patient’s life. Mattox continued to repair aortic injuries using his technique. He said that year alone he had half a dozen such surgeries and lost only one patient.

“We approached them that same way,” he said. “We wrote it up and published it. Because this was sort of a novel approach, people began calling it the Mattox Maneuver. Other people started doing it and having better results for a whole variety of reasons.”

Healthcare Costs Continue to Rise As Chief of Staff at Ben Taub, much of Mattox’s job deals with funding the hospital operations.

He understands the costs associated with healthcare and the issues surrounding insurance. He also understands that the solution to the problems may not be popular. At Ben Taub, 70 percent of the patients do not have insurance coverage.

“That means no pay,” Mattox said.

As a result, the hospital has developed a schedule of benefits or a list of things the hospital will not treat. On the list are things such as sterilization procedures, cosmetic surgery with the exception of reconstructive surgery, dissecting aneurisms and organ transplants. Mattox said they have a list that is about four pages long of procedures they will not do.

“The cost is high and the return is low,” he said. “The decision on not doing those is scientifically based and it is basically a return on investment.”

Mattox said they prioritize and rationalize their healthcare procedures based on scientific information. Procedures that are not meant to save lives, or those that have a low success rate are generally not performed at Ben Taub. He said $3 trillion is spent on healthcare each year, and depending on whose information you read, anywhere from 35 to 75 percent of that is spent in the last six months of life. He said at Ben Taub they look at the realistic chance they have to save and prolong one’s life, giving them a better quality of life for an extended period of time.

He said it is not a popular social idea, but it is something they have to do at a public facility that receives few of the benefits afforded to private healthcare institutions.

“In the private sector where you get reimbursement from either the patient or insurance, the hospital sells that service to the patient, so they want those things done whether there is a return on investment or not. Therein lies the ill of our current, profit-based healthcare delivery system,” Mattox said. “It’s only in a place like ours that medicine is practiced in its purest sense.”

And while politicians struggle to find an answer for the issues facing healthcare, Dr. Mattox thinks there is a better answer than what is currently being pursued by government.

A lifelong Republican, Mattox is not a fan of the Affordable Care Act, even though it is based on a Republican program in Massachusetts. He likens it to a ponzi scheme through which

the government has to fund the program by taking money from other programs. He thinks it will eventually brankrupt many areas of the country as it is doing in Massachusetts.

As a result, Mattox said he and others are looking at more regionalized approaches to healthcare, staying away from mandated federal programs. A position he says is not popular with Democrats.

No Signs of Slowing Needless to say, Dr. Mattox’s job and obligations keep him busy. But he still finds time to pursue other interests. He is a voracious reader and enjoys researching various topics such as the conspiracy theory behind the assassinations for both John F. and Robert Kennedy. Or Billy Saul Estes’ involvement in what was classified a suicide of someone who was going to testify against him.

Given the time, he will also regale you with stories about politicians he has met and worked with over the years … some big names of whom he is not too fond. But you’ll have to ask him about those.

And while his day consists of making sure the hospital if functioning efficiently, writing articles, contributing to textbooks, teaching classes, or attending “interminable meetings,” Dr. Mattox remembers where it started for him and why he loves what he is doing.

“Some part of every day,” he said, “I do something clinical.

Including taking trauma calls.”

Having a disability never kept Amy from achieving her goals

avigating the world of college is pretty challenging for most freshmen. New room, new buildings and new teachers can make even the most confident young person a little apprehensive.

Throw in not being able to see ANY of it, and you have the makings of a truly frightening experience.

Thankfully for Amy Gray Conley, BA’96, she also came to the Wayland Baptist University campus armed with a healthy sense of humor and faith that God had her right where she needed to be.

“I thought about going to Texas Tech or (another) state school because the Commission on the Blind would pay for tuition at a state school,” said Conley, who has been blind since birth due to a genetic condition. “But I wanted a

Christian atmosphere and didn’t want to get lost in a larger school. I knew I could trust Wayland because of their history and tradition, and I liked the smaller atmosphere as well.”

That atmosphere would prove to be a place for great growth and lifelong friendships to blossom for young Amy, whose mother Jean and father Calvin, a 1968 Wayland graduate, was then serving as pastor in Idalou and would be relatively nearby.

Looking back 18 years later, Conley, who recently celebrated her 10year anniversary with husband Shane, realizes how those four years shaped significantly who she is now. Starting from her freshman year, Amy soaked up every experience she could, getting a well-rounded education during her time at Wayland. She double-majored in psychology and religion, and she shared her love for music with the International Choir, so she spent a good amount of

time in the Harral Music Complex in rehearsals and voice lessons.

Memories of classes focus on professors who made an impact on the friendly and funny pastor’s daughter from small-town Texas. She recalls Dr. J. Hoyt Bowers, now Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences, who used puff paints to trace skeletons or other items so she could “see” the lesson content more clearly.

She remember Dr. Phil Almes, who retired in 2004 after 20 years of teaching math at WBU, giving her tests to her orally, mentioning that he was praying for her during the exam. Jennie Lynn Hodges, now retired, made Conley feel special over four years of voice lessons, and Dr. Fred Meeks, Emeritus Professor of Religion – “We called him ‘The Hammer,’” Conley said with a laugh – would teach from books he had written, sharing valuable wisdom.

“The thing that stands out to me about the faculty is they care about the students. It’s obvious,” she recalled. “They pray before classes a lot of times, and they care about where people are spiritually as well as the needs that are going on. I just loved the family atmosphere Wayland provided, and that’s really stuck with me.

“I look back over the influence

those professors had, especially in the religion department where they really made you think about ‘why do you believe what you believe?’ It was a great, uncompromising faculty, and I have to say I think Wayland is unique in that respect. I don’t think every university that says they are Christian is even that strong in that regard. I felt like it was not only academically but musically and in every way a great experience. I’m glad I got the education that I did.”

Conley recalls leaning heavily on classmates who were willing to study and complete assignments together, as well as tutors who could close the gaps in education created by her limited sight and the lack of college textbooks in braille. She says she felt supported by faculty and staff as well as students who lent a hand both literally and metaphorically throughout her four years.

Outside the classroom, the family atmosphere that had drawn Conley to Wayland would prove to be a place for lifelong relationships to form over many funny instances, encouraged by Amy’s positive attitude and ability to laugh at her difficulties.

A resident of Fleming-Mays Tower, she relied on her cane, Herbie, and regularly dodged campus obstacles like fire hy-

drants, one of which she affectionately renamed “Fifi.”

A late night celebration with French fries, chocolate cake and Dr Pepper resulted in the ever-jovial Conley penning a song about herself and her antics as a student, put to the tune of “Amazing Grace:” “Oh Amy Gray, how sweet the sound that acts just like a ham. I once was sane but now I’m not, was blind and I still am.”

That sense of humor would serve Conley well through both hard times – like experiencing the tragic death of classmate Anita Cranor, killed in a 1995 automobile accident away from campus – and the high points of college life like performing with music recruiting group Rejoice, competing in the Miss Wayland pageant and participating in service projects with her Christian sorority group.

One of her fondest memories is getting the chance to drive on campus, aided and abetted by good friend Amanda Terrell. Terrell put Conley behind the wheel of her car and guided her slowly from the dorm to the McClung Center.

“I’m in the driver’s seat doing my thing, thinking, ‘This is ridiculous,’ and we pull up and Amanda says, ‘Oh no, there’s a police officer. He’s pulling up next to us.’

says, ‘Act normal.’ I’m thinking, ‘I’m blind as a bat, and I’m supposed to act normal?’

“We get out of the car, she comes around and takes my arm, and the officer says, ‘Hello, ladies’ and we said, ‘Hello, officer; how are you?’ and he didn’t do a thing,” she recalls in vivid detail.

“I don’t know if he wasn’t paying attention or he just decided to let me make it, but that could’ve been a very bad thing. I could have gotten a DWB, driving while blind.

“I think about all my experiences and you can’t even put a price tag on all those kind of things to build confidence. That’s one of the main things (college) did is build my confidence. That I could do this and my parents really had equipped me with what I needed to succeed.”

And she has. Since graduating in 1996, Conley completed her master’s degree in counseling and human development at Hardin-Simmons University, aiming at a career in Christian counseling. Her first experiences in that work world were in a residential intensive substance abuse treatment center, however, and she has remained in that specialized field since 1998.

She earned her LPC (licensed professional counselor) certification, as well as the designation for licensed chemical dependency counselor and a certification for counseling in criminal justice environments.

Conley is the clinical supervisor for a transitional treatment center called StarQuest in Lubbock, working with individuals who are recently released from

prison and have substance abuse issues, helping them move back into society with individual and group therapy.

“I didn’t plan on getting into substance abuse counseling at all,” she said. “I had no knowledge of that at all, coming from a very sheltered pastor’s kid’s home. I wasn’t prepared for God to move me into that, but I know it’s where I’m supposed to be.

“I’ve always been drawn to people that needed to be heard, and I wanted to have an opportunity to share Christ as it was appropriate. I’m not in a Christian counseling atmosphere now, so I have to be more mindful and careful about that. It’s neat to see how God can use any vocation to reach people and the lost,

Answering the call WBU grad Mary Galeana is the first female chaplain in the Texas National Guard

ary Frances Galeana wears many hats as a mother, wife, public school teacher and minister. One – a camouflage cap with a cross insignia – indicates her role as a chaplain in the Texas Army National Guard.

Earlier this year, she returned from a nine-month deployment to Kuwait, where she served with the Theater Gateway, providing for the spiritual needs of military personnel and civilian contractors entering or exiting the military theater of operations in Southwest Asia.

“We saw 6,000 to 7,000 a month come through,” she said.

“That’s a lot of movement, and when you see that many people, the care they need is going to be very diverse. But the Lord was good to me, and it was a blessing to have served.”

Galeana entered the Guard as a chaplain candidate in 2007, and two years later, after completing her master’s degree in Christian ministry from Wayland’s Virtual campus, she became the first female chaplain in the Texas Army National Guard. She also was the first chaplain – male or female – with the Texas Army National Guard to train with the U.S. Army Airborne School.

Service as a military chaplain endorsed by the Baptist General Convention of Texas represents the fulfillment of a longtime dream, combining Galeana’s desire to serve her country and serve God. Galeana made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ at age 8. After she graduated from high school in Weslaco, she entered the U.S.

Military Academy at West Point.

“West Point recruited me to play basketball and compete in track and field,” she recalled. At the time she entered the academy, she did not fully recognize the level of commitment it required, and she left the school after 15 months. However, the experience gave her a deep appreciation for the military.

“God kept a love for soldiers and a desire to serve in my heart,” she said.

In 2007, she rededicated her life to Christ at Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen, and she soon felt God leading her to pursue vocational Christian service. But she did not know how to reconcile that with her deep sense of calling to public education and her role as a wife and mother.

Galeana teaches Texas history and social studies to seventh graders at DeLeon Middle School in McAllen and also is a certified librarian and school counselor.

At a library technology conference in Austin, she visited with an Army recruiter she first met when he was visiting schools in McAllen. Although she already earned two master’s degrees, she talked about her desire to pursue advanced studies in theology and prepare for some ministry role.

“You know, the Army will pay for that,” he told her and suggested she consider applying as a chaplain candidate and serving with the Texas Army National Guard.

She recognized the time it would require away from her family, and she discussed it with them.

“My two oldest daughters insisted: ‘If God is calling you to do that, you need to do it. You won’t have any peace if you don’t,’” she recalled.

Galeana has four daughters – Mary Beth, 20, who serves in Germany with the U.S. Air Force; Tabitha, 18, a recent

high school graduate who plans to serve with Youth With a Mission; Connie, 14; and Katie, 13. Her husband, Daniel, works as technology specialist with the McAllen Independent School District.

Her family supported her decision, and “all the pieces fit together,” to make her service possible, she said, including support from Principal Phillip Grossweiler and others at her school.

“God’s timing is perfect. Everything came together as it should,” she said.

In her ongoing role with the Guard in South Texas, she provides spiritual counsel, offers religious services and provides training to personnel in areas such as family wellness and suicide prevention.

As the only military chaplain in the McAllen area, the U.S. Army frequently has called on Galeana to deliver casualty notification to families in the Rio Grande Valley. She views it as a sacred responsibility.

“Jesus said there is no greater human love than to lay down one’s life for a friend. These soldiers have sacrificed their lives for friends they will never know – given their lives for people they never met,” she said.

During her deployment to Kuwait, she discovered how service far from home in potentially dangerous places made soldiers exceptionally receptive to spiritual direction.

Maid in Cambodia Hawaii campus grad working to improve conditions and pay for domestic help 14 footprints

T

raditionally, when Cambodia’s domestic service industry hits the headlines, it’s often been for negative reasons.

Over the years, tens of thousands of local maids have migrated abroad to countries like Malaysia, with an unlucky few suffering shocking abuse at the hands of their employers.

Yet a topic that has often skirted below the surface is the conditions faced by those working within

homes in the Kingdom itself.

In a largely informal sector – maids are often hired ad hoc through word-of-mouth or via Internet groups – formalized working arrangements and contracts are rare.

According to Marisa Tan, the expat founder of a new agency called Maid In Cambodia, which hopes to improve conditions and pay, domestic helpers can be working full-time, with long hours of unpaid overtime sometimes lumped on top, for as little as $80 a month.

“It all starts with respect. If there’s no respect how can you

expect them to treat your house well? Treat your children well?” says Tan, who received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice at the Wayland satellite campus on the island of Oahu in 2003, discussing exploitation within the industry.

Maid In Cambodia, which acts as both a training center for domestic workers and a job placement service, hopes to change all that. The socially responsible business is the brainchild of Tan, who has been living in the Kingdom since 2010, and her Cambodian counterpart Chu Mom Ry from Kampong Cham.

The pair met when Ry came to work in Tan’s home in Phnom Penh. They soon formed a fast friendship, with the family sending her to English classes and supporting her son through university.

“We started communicating and she told me what’s going on (in the domestic service sector).

It got me thinking,” recalls Tan. The seeds of Maid In Cambodia, which launched recently and is registered with the Ministry of Labour, had been sown.

In a bid to better working environments, the new company aims to improve communication and understanding in both sides of the employer-employee relationships, with the team acting as a sounding board for both sides.

A minimum wage of $120 per month for full-time staff (an agency fee of 25 percent is added on top and passed on to the maid’s employer) along with standard working hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. have been set, and all maids that pass through

Tan graduated from the WBU Hawaii campus in 2003 with a degree in criminal justice. the agency attend a hands-on training course covering topics such as cleaning techniques and education sessions on bacteria and germs. Domestic workers also receive free medical health checks courtesy of a local clinic, called Khema.

Another important aspect to a good working relationship lies in agreeing on what both employers and staff believe the job entails.

“Oftentimes what I see is ‘I need a maid – hurry, hurry, hurry’ and then there are no expectations. No one tells them exactly what they want them to do,” says Tan, who is originally from Munich, Germany. “That can result in confusion, disappointment and job loss.

“If sometimes expectations are through the roof, and if you don’t convey that to somebody, how is that reasonable?” she adds.

Former tailor Chu Mom Ry, who is the new company’s training director, explains that when

facing a problem at work – like dealing with employer complaints or having concerns over the provision of food or holiday bonus pay – people’s immediate reaction can be to quit the job and find another one, rather than persevere.

In a bid to set clear parameters, the agency intends to visit homes to mark a checklist of tasks that cleaners are expected to carry out – with doing large amounts of laundry or cooking deemed extra services with addon prices – as well as matching staff availability with employer needs. This could allow more flexibility for working mothers, a concern raised by domestic workers attending an initial session with the new business.

Ry emphasizes that, for her, becoming a domestic worker was a financial improvement on being a tailor. Working with a good employer has allowed her to travel and help with her children’s education, and she hopes that the new service can also help women find equally good jobs in which they can thrive.

Indicating that a good working relationship goes both ways, the Cambodian mother also says that building up a successful career can take time, hard work and dedication, but employers can also provide support. “I love my job,” she adds.

“It’s giving them something to be proud about,” says Tan, who hopes to build people’s self-esteem along with a sense of community for domestic workers.

ayland Baptist University students found a new face in the student activities office when they arrived on campus for the fall term. Brad Miles, former youth minister, music minister and front man for a Christian Rock band, was named the new Coordinator of Student Activities in July.

But that’s not the only new job Miles picked up recently. He was also named the new pastor of Stonebridge Fellowship in Plainview.

Admittedly, it’s been a busy summer.

Miles, whose wife, Amy, is a professor in Wayland’s School of Education, takes over as activities coordinator for Micah Evans who moved to Austin earlier this summer. Brad and Amy, who met while in college at Howard Payne University, later earning master’s degrees from Hardin-Simmons, moved to Lubbock a year ago when Amy was offered a faculty position at Wayland. Miles accepted a job teaching at Southcrest Christian School in Lubobck and served as the worship pastor at Oakwood Baptist Church.

For Miles, coming to Wayland and Stonebridge is a dream come true.

He fell into a short-lived music career while in college. Studying speech communication at Howard Payne and

working on a Master of Divinity degree at Hardin-Simmons, Miles was always one to play the guitar and sing. But it wasn’t until an experience he had singing with some friends that he realized music might be a way for him to share the gospel.

“We were sitting out at the bell towers at the big park in the middle of campus (Howard Payne),” Miles said.

“They would play chords and I would make up songs.”

Miles said one day they were playing a praise song and he was singing along with his eyes closed.

“I opened my eyes and there were like 30 people there and they were all holding hands and singing along and crying,” he said. “I thought maybe there was something to this music thing that I hadn’t thought about.”

Miles had always planned on being a pastor, but growing up in rural Texas towns – primarily in Nacogdoches before graduating high school in Dumas – he didn’t feel a connection to the style of preaching and church leadership with which he was familiar.

“I looked around at a lot of the pastors I knew growing up and thought I don’t think I can be one of those guys,” he said. “Nothing against them, but it just wasn’t me.”

degree he and Amy moved to Nashville. Miles worked for Lifeway in Nashville and continued to perform with his band until they got their big break.

“Like everybody’s story, somebody’s accountant was at a show I played and the next thing I knew we had a production deal and a record deal,” he said.

“It was all backwards and weird but that wasn’t the plan. I didn’t dream of being a musician. My dream was to share the love of Christ with people and share the gospel.”

Miles and his band Everman had limited success as full-time touring musicians. An album release and a couple of years of touring soon came to an end.

“You can still find it in the dollar bin,” Miles said of the album. “I used to stand next to the album when it was at the new arrivals bin at Wal Mart. I would

stand next to it and see if anyone recognized me. No one ever did.

It was fairly unglamorous.

“A record deal … all that means is that you rode around in a 15-passenger van for a couple of years and ate pizza.”

It did, however, prepare him to serve as a worship leader at various congregations throughout the years. But the desire to pastor a church was still driving him.

Amy began asking her college students where they attend church in Plainview. Many mentioned Stonebridge Fellowship.

When she checked the church’s website, she noticed the congregation was without a pastor and encouraged her husband to check into it. That was late last fall.

Miles called WBU Baptist Student Ministries Director Donnie Brown who was serving as interim pastor at Stonebridge

and talked with him. Miles said nothing came immediately from the initial conversations as the church was taking a time of introspection before seeking to hire a pastor.

It wasn’t long, though, before the church began seriously searching for a new leader.

Brown called Miles in March.

Yet while Miles was interested in pursuing the pastorate, he knew it was a bi-vocational job and he would need another source of employment.

“There were no jobs in Plainview. I looked,” he said. “We thought the Lord was not in this.”

Miles said he and his wife asked God for a clear sign to confirm that this was his will.

About that time, Evans resigned his post as Coordinator of Student Activities. Miles said Vice

The Jimmy Dean Museum

hile the ground breaking was more figurative than literal, Wayland Baptist University, community members and special guests gathered in the auditorium of the Museum of the Llano Estacado in June to celebrate the beginning stage of construction on the Jimmy Dean Museum.

Originally scheduled as an outdoor event, a morning rain storm forced festivities to be moved indoors, but it was nonetheless meaningful to those in attendance. Jimmy Dean’s widow, Donna Dean Stevens, her husband Jayson Stevens, Paul DiPasquale, who sculpted the Jimmy Dean bronze that will welcome visitors to the museum and Tamara Elliott of Hillshire Brands, which

donated the sculpture, were all on hand, as well as members of Lavin and Associates architects and representatives from the Jimmy Dean Foundation.

Chair of the Wayland Board of Trustees Sally Walker addressed the group and Donna, likening Jimmy Dean to the faithful witness laid forth by Timothy in the Apostle Paul’s second letter to Timothy in the New Testament.

“What we are doing is taking a faithful man’s witness and giving continual voice to that witness so that it doesn’t die,” Walker said. “It is our prayer that we remain trustworthy in continuing that witness.”

Dean Stevens thanked Walker for her words and thanked the crowd that gathered for the ceremony.

“I feel like I’m coming home here. I love Plainview and West Texas so much,” she said.

Dean Stevens told of visiting Plainview with Jimmy and how he would like to “make a store call” and give out “George Washington coupons.” She said Jimmy always met people who treated him like he was their neighbor and that was the way he felt.

“Jimmy was a giving person,” Dean Stevens said. “It is my mission to carry on his legacy and his memory, and I can’t think of a better way to do that than to have his museum here at Wayland in Plainview.”

Preliminary work has already begun as phone and network cables have been moved to prepare for the new building. The approximately $5 million project will begin construction as soon as the final touches are put on the architect plans in hopes that the building will be complete in time to celebrate Jimmy’s birthday in August of 2015.

Dean Statue housed in dorm Jimmy Dean arrived in Plainview last May in the form of a 7-foot tall, 800-pound replica of the late entertainer and sausage mogul.

The Dean statue, sculpted by Paul DiPasquale and donated by Hillshire Brands, will be one of the main attractions in the Jimmy Dean Museum, located on the west side of the Museum of the Llano Estacado. The statue will reside in Jimmy Dean Hall on the Wayland campus until the museum is complete.

Dean, who died in June of 2010, was born in Olton and raised in Plainview until dropping out of school to join the Merchant Marines. He served in the U.S. Air Force and began hosting daily radio shows. Dean’s personality and talents led him to become a major entertainer in television, movies and on stage, as well as build a sausage empire.

In 2008, Dean and his wife Donna donated $1 million to Wayland. After his death, Donna Meade Dean-Stevens donated $5 million to build a Jimmy Dean Museum. The museum will house Dean’s personal memorabilia as well as offer visitors audio-visual elements where they can be entertained by his music and advertising career.

Wayland administrators were on hand as the Dean bronze was unloaded at Dean Hall.

Vice President of Enrollment Management Dr. Claude Lusk watched the process and posed for a picture with the statue once it was secured. Lusk even broke into a little “Big, Bad John” as the statue was being removed from its shipping crate.

Executive Director of Advancement Mike Melcher said it was an honor to have the statue on campus.

“Jimmy Dean was a huge influence in entertainment and business,” Melcher said. “Having a Jimmy Dean statue and eventually a museum on our campus is a great honor. It’s also exciting to see how our students react when they realize who he was and how his influential reach went well beyond the breakfast table.”

A real Pioneer Wayland grad Sally Walker is the first woman to serve as Chair of the WBU Board of Trustees

ally Walker laughs when she says she was just glad to get her degree in religion from Wayland in 1981, never dreaming she would be a history-maker as the first woman to serve as chair of the Board of Trustees.

The Arlington, Texas, resident received a special extension from the Baptist General Convention of Texas to serve an additional year beyond the traditional 9-year term limit since it is customary for Wayland board chairs to serve two years. She was elected to the post last October.

A 1974 graduate of Lubbock Monterey High School, Walker served as a youth minister at Highland Baptist Church in Lubbock prior to coming to Wayland and then returned to Highland to work

with singles and college students after graduation.

“Richard Waters was my pastor and he was a real Christian gentleman and very interested in church growth, new church starts and missions,” said Walker. “He really mentored me.”

During her time at Wayland, she worked in the bus ministry at First Baptist Church of Plainview.

Her vocational direction took a turn when she married Robert Walker. He, too, graduated from Monterey, but 10 years before his wife, and received his degree from West Texas State University.

He was a partner in Acme Electric in Lubbock, a commercial and industrial firm, and when the business decided to expand into the Metroplex, the Walkers moved to Arlington. After working with her husband for several years, a new opportunity came along for Sally.

“I had a chance to start an electrical supply distributorship when the opportunity opened for minorities (including women). There were very few in the state. I wanted to kind of expand where I was in my life and went to a Craig Levering, who had an electrical distributorship worth multi-millions of dollars, and asked if was something he thought I could do and succeed in,” Walker explained.

“He was so excited and offered his assistance and got me some contracts so I’d have customers starting out.”

She named her company Blue Star Electric.

“I had actually wanted to use Morning Star as a reference to Christ in the Old Testament but that name was already taken. Blue in any flame is the hottest and blue is the brightest star in the sky, so I chose that name,” she said.

Walker got another big opportunity to provide lighting, wiring and miscellaneous electrical materials through an electrical contractor working on the huge football stadium for the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington. She continues to develop relationships with contractors in the Metroplex and with the State of Texas.

She and her husband have been involved in Mission Arlington for many years. Robert first became involved as a Bible study leader and then they personally helped build a church across from Sam Houston High School “in the worst gang area of town.”

Walker said that was her introduction to Mission Arlington founder Tillie Bergen, whose grandson, Steven, is now a Wayland student and a

President’s Ambassador.

“She and I meet on Fridays for lunch and prayer. We have seen how God continues to move through this ministry as people are saved and their lives are changed. They are being nurtured in God’s Word. A website provides opportunity for people around the world to download Bible studies in their own language.

“Robert and I began contributing to the ministry and were privileged to be asked to serve on the Mission Arlington board,” Walker said. “It has an amazing outreach.”

Walker said her greatest joy in serving on the Wayland board “is watching how the University has grown and expanded its course of studies and degrees. It really reaches out to students to provide an amazing Christian education.”

The Walkers have received the Distinguished Benefactor Award and the Keeper of the Flame from Wayland for their financial support.

An endowed scholarship bears the name of her grandfather, the late W.D. “Dub” Turner of Lubbock, who served on the Wayland board for nine years in the 1980s.

Walker likes to read and travel and “play golf on occasion because every once in a while you feel like you need to go out and hit something,” she quipped.

“I just want to say how much I appreciate Wayland, its mission, and its kindness to let me come to school and finish my degree. Folks in the community were very supportive,” she said.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on September 30 and ending at midnight on Oct. 1, Wayland will host its first giving day called THE BIG GIVE. This 30-hour effort will raise donations for our Annual Fund and involve as many new donors as possible.

In addition to the in-depth discipleship she provided in those settings, she also touched thousands of lives of personnel who were “passing through” the Theater Gateway.

“When time is short, you become aware that what you say is very meaningful. Your words matter, and your prayers matter,” she said.

She and her assistant in Kuwait also wrote the reintegration

brief – a presentation to personnel returning stateside after deployment – as part of the standard operating procedures for the Theater Gateway. It included how to recognize the early signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as preparing soldiers for the changes they might encounter in their family dynamics when they returned home.

Galeana insisted she never struggled as a woman in a predominantly male military culture or felt anyone doubted

her abilities.

“Going on road marches with an infantry unit will toughen you up really quickly,” she quipped.

In fact, she believed some soldiers grew to see her as a surrogate mother and confide in her in ways they might not with a male chaplain.

“I think they’re more willing to open up,” she said. “If I cry with a soldier, as a woman, it’s probably more acceptable. And I do cry.

God gave me tear ducts for a reason.”

Miles said he is ready to face the challenge. He will also have to find a way to work both jobs around schedules that can be a little non-traditional.

“They asked me in the interview how I was going to balance both jobs,” Miles said. “To be honest with you, I don’t know. I’ve never done these two things. But I’m a pretty high energy person.”

He will also be juggling family life that includes two daughters: Sadie, age 6, and Carsen, 13, who is entering 8th grade – something Miles said he is not handling very well. Yet while maintaining his status as the overprotective father of a teenage daughter, he is looking forward to investing in the lives of Wayland students and his congregation.

“It all happened real fast,” Miles said. “They called me on Monday. I interviewed on Wednesday and they hired me on Thursday.”

Conley said she’s always felt comfortable and safe in her work, feeling respected by colleagues and clients and fulfilled by meaningful work that makes a difference in others’ lives. And much of that was honed during

her college years at Wayland.

“Wayland above all was a place for me to spread my wings.

Being able to go on choir tours to Europe, to be senior class president… I felt so much acceptance, and I was pushed to be brave.” she said with passion. “He provided what I needed, from a roommate to the right teachers to people on campus that would help me. That helped to strength-

en my faith.

“Wayland taught me that whatever I did, it was very important that I be grounded in what I believed and where my focus was going to lay. It’s so easy to get pulled away, and having that stability is important. I felt so supported there and wasn’t afraid to take risks, to try new things. All of that helped me to be equipped to do what I do.”

Of course, the graduates of 1964 will be our Honor Class but all classes ending in “4” will be recognized – especially at chapel on Friday when five alumni and two outstanding financial supporters will receive “Distinguished” awards given by the Association of Former Students.

Distinguished Alumni: Dr. Chet Sample, BS’68, a former Pioneer basketball standout, he retired last year after 21 years as a coach and athletic director and 15 as Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

Distinguished Leadership Alumni: Dr. Bobby Hall, BBA’83, MS’85, Academic VP and Provost, and Dr. Claude Lusk, BS’84, Vice President for Enrollment Management. Both are former full-time School of Business faculty members and continue to teach one class each in Business.

Distinguished Service Alumni: Danny Murphree, BS’69, has been Executive Director of Property Management for Wayland since 1988. He is a former All-American in track and formerly coached track and the Queen Bees.

Distinguished Young Alumni: John Trischitti, BA’00, recently won Texas Librarian of the Year for his work in transforming the Midland library.

Distinguished Benefactors: Max and Marcheta Gabriel of Amarillo, formerly of Plainview, have endowed three scholarships and helped provide the stained glass windows in the Mabee Resources Center chapel. Max is a former trustee.

Members of the Sally Society raised enough money to completely renovate the dorm lobbies at Ferguson Hall and Fleming Mays Tower. The work was done over the summer, in time to surprise returning students this fall.

But perhaps the most unique gifts have come at the annual Power of the Purse fundraiser, held in April each year in Plainview. The themed luncheon begins with a silent auction of around 75 purses, encompassing a wide variety of styles and price ranges.

The lunch program also includes a live auction of about six or seven purses, provided by local corporate sponsors. Attendees enjoy a lunch, great fellowship with other women and a chance to take home a great handbag while supporting a great cause. Their $30 tickets are tax-deductible and add to Sally Society profits.

“This luncheon has become an anticipated yearly event for many local women, and they love the chance to shop for purses, visit with friends and lend support to Wayland,” said Teresa Young, Director of Annual Giving and Sally Society assistant coordinator. “It is probably one of the most fun things we do and really brings in huge donations for our projects. We sell the room out every year, so we know we’re doing something right.”

That first year of its founding, 25 women stepped up to join as full members, and the first Power of the Purse fundraiser was a sellout, bringing in another $10,000-plus into the Sally coffers. After three years of existence, the group has raised around $120,000 to benefit Wayland. Dues-paying members vote on which project to support each calendar year.

The first year, the group funded an endowed scholarship for $25,000, creating the Sarah Tucker Wayland Endowed Scholarship to benefit a female student. The second year resulted in a new Steinway upright piano for the School of Music.

This year, the Sally Society undertook its most ambitious project, providing an extreme makeover to the lobbies of Ferguson Hall and Fleming-Mays Tower, the campus’s two oldest dormitories for women, with help from Pat Crawford, an interior designer in Amarillo and a trustee at Wayland. The work was completed during the summer and will be featured in an open house to be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, during homecoming.

“I am so excited to be involved in the Sally Society that honors the memory of my grandmother,” said Linda Adkins, a Plainview resident and the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Wayland. “I know my grandfather would be so pleased that Wayland is honoring ‘his Sally’ in such a special way.”

Alumni have also found another place to focus their passion through the Sally Society.

“I am excited to be part of the Sally Society, which offers women who have a passion for education and specifically for Wayland a fun outlet to pursue the opportunities to share knowledge and monetary blessings with others,” said Sally Eaves, a 1975 graduate and member of the Board of Trustees.

Since the past three events in Plainview have been such a success, the Sally Society is growing its outreach by adding a Power of the Purse in Lubbock this fall, slated as a brunch event on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Prosperity Bank Building at 14th and Avenue Q. ome of the best years of Rick Cooper’s life were spent at Wayland Baptist University and in Plainview. Now, he’s back for more.

Cooper, who played and coached basketball at Wayland for 15 years before spending the last 20 years as head men’s basketball coach at West Texas A&M University, is the

new director of athletics at his alma mater. Cooper’s hiring was announced on July 23.

“Having graduated from there and having worked there before, Wayland and Plainview represent home to Janie and me and our family,” the 56-year-old Cooper said in speaking for his wife, the former Janie Denton who played basketball for the Flying Queens, and their two grown children. “We are really, really excited about it.”

Dr. Claude Lusk, Wayland’s vice president of enrollment management who introduced Cooper, said he believes serving as athletics director at WBU is about more than a job.

“This is a place that has given to him, and he wants to give back to it,” Lusk said. “Coach Cooper brings a passion for what Wayland is and what we stand for, along with a passion for Wayland athletics.”

experience and respect for Wayland as some of his greatest assets.

“He appreciates Wayland’s successes and where we are, and he’s interested in building on what foundation we already have here,” Lusk said. “He’s interested in helping Wayland move forward, not just because that’s what he’s supposed to do but because this is home. This is an opportunity for him to be connected to a place that was pivotal in his own life, and I know he’s excited about that.”

Cooper, who earned both Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from WBU, is just the second director of athletics at Wayland in 24 years as he takes over for Dr. Greg Feris following his recent retirement.

“Dr. Feris left this an attractive position, and we had a lot of interest in it,” Lusk said. “Rick Cooper emerged from a strong field of qualified candidates.”

A native of Bridgeport, W.Va., Cooper played basketball at Wayland from 1977-81. The media guide prior to his senior season stated, “Rick has become a real crowd pleaser because of his personality and hard-nosed style of play.”

A 6-foot-5, 195-pound forward, Cooper earned all-district honors while averaging 13.4 points and 5.3 rebounds his senior season when his 65.1 field goal percentage ranked seventh in the NAIA. He went into the Pioneer record book as the 14th-leading scorer in team history with 1,209 points. Today, he ranks 21st.

After serving a year as an assistant basketball coach at Idalou High School, Cooper returned to Wayland as men’s assistant basketball coach.

Following five years in that position,

during a period that included a national runner-up finish, Cooper was named head coach in 1987.

Over the next six seasons, Cooper guided the Pioneers to a combined 152-48 record and was named NAIA District 8 Coach of the Year three times. His first team advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament.

Cooper left Wayland in 1993 for the head men’s basketball coaching position at NCAA Division II West Texas A&M in nearby Canyon. In 20 seasons, Cooper compiled a record of 394-195 and led the Buffaloes to four Lone Star Conference Tournament championships and 10 NCAA National Tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance.

He was named LSC Coach of the Year six times, South Central Region Coach of the Year twice, and in 2011 was a finalist for the Clarence Gaines National Division II Coach of the Year. A year later, he was inducted into the Wayland Baptist Athletics Hall of Honor, 10 years after receiving the Harley Redin Award for excellence in coaching.

In 26 years as a head coach, Cooper’s teams never had a sub.500 season. He’s the winningest men’s basketball coach at both WBU (152-47, .763) and WT (394195, .669) with an overall record of 546-242 (.693).

Cooper said his excitement about taking the reins as Wayland’s director of athletics revolves around relationships first formed during his previous stint at WBU. “We’ve stayed in contact with a lot of those folks,” he said. “We have really strong feelings for Wayland and the people who make it what it is. The administration and the coaching staff make that a really

attractive position for us, and I’m anxious and excited to be able to help.”

Lusk pointed out that Wayland’s athletic program, in terms of national finishes for its 21 sports, enjoyed its most successful year in school history during the 2013-14 academic year.

“We have a nationally-recognized collection of coaches and teams coming off a very successful year, so Coach Cooper will be walking into a situation that allows him the ability to move forward instead of being in a position of having to fix things,” Lusk said. “Dr. Feris left us in a position that allows us to ask, ‘How can we get to the next level?’”

Cooper is looking forward to helping Wayland get there.

“There’s an awful lot I have to learn, but it looks to me like there is a really good group to learn from and to work with,” he said. “My plan is to do an awful lot of listening and not much talking, first and foremost.”

Cooper and his wife Janie, a retired school administrator, have two children. When the Coopers moved from Plainview in 1993, Tyler was entering the second grade.

Today, he is a third-year orthopedic surgery resident at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple.

Kori, who had yet to start school when the family moved in the early 1990s, just accepted a job as head volleyball coach at Grapevine High School.

Between Kori and her dad both taking new jobs, it’s been an eventful summer for the Coopers.

“We feel very fortunate,” Coach Cooper said, “that it has worked out like it has.”

PEP Milestone; Business opening PEP reaches $3 million Plainview’s investment in its own young people through the Plainview Education Partnership — the PEP program — has passed the $3 million milestone.

Don Williams, chairman of the unique program, announced that since its inception more than two decades ago the Plainview Education Partnership has provided 739 local young people with their first year of college education — that’s 739 years of college work — and more than $3 million in college tuition for participating Plainview High School and Plainview Christian Academy students.

The program passed its $2 million milestone in 2010, with just over $2.1 million invested in 557 Plainview youth.

“College costs have increased 17.6 percent in Texas since 2008 and more than doubled in some other states,” he explains.

“This achievement confirms that Plainview and Wayland Baptist University are willing to do what’s necessary to make a difference in the lives of students.”

Business Accelerator is designed to assist budding entrepreneurs in developing their business ideas. The Spark offices are located at 1812-B West 5th Street in Plainview.

Dr. Charles Starnes said the services are open to anyone who is interested in pursuing a business idea, but might not understand the process involved or the steps to take in order to get started.

As it is designed, the Business Accelerator will provide a place for entrepreneurs to discuss and research ideas, develop business plans and business models, and determine whether or not their ideas will be profitable in the existing marketplace.

Starnes earns NBIA certification Associate Dean of the School of Business Dr. Charles Starnes was recently certified for completing the National Business Incubation Association Incubator Management Program.

Wayland Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Bobby Hall said that Starnes’ involvement in the certification program will have a strong influence on the success of Spark.

Starnes “We appreciate the forward movement demonstrated by this accomplishment and the many other advances already being seen at Spark, which I truly believe will have a remarkable impact on Wayland students and faculty, the Plainview community and West Texas region,” Hall said.

The NBIA program is a fourday workshop involving 24 hours of extensive training in various management issues faced by incubator programs, such as client funding, strategic planning, facilities management, serving clients and encouraging local and global entrepreneurial activity.

The program is designed to give participants a better understanding of how to build stronger client and stakeholder relationships,

work within start-up company life cycles and how to establish effective programs.

Wayland Anchorage student finds success A Wayland Baptist University student seeking to further his education and career in one classroom has been recognized for success in another.

Thomas Shelley, a Junior ROTC teacher at A.J. Dimond High School in Anchorage, was named BP’s Teacher of the Year in April. Shelley was selected out of 1,400 nomiShelley nations. The BP Teachers of Excellence program recognized 10 teachers from Anchorage and 33 statewide. Each Teacher of Excellence award winner received a $500 gift card and award certificate, and their schools received a $500 grant. For being singled out as the Teacher of the Year, Shelley received a $1,500 scholarship that he will use as he pursues a master’s degree at Wayland.

Evans steps in as business school Dean

W

ayland Baptist University held a special reception in the School of Business recently to officially recognize outgoing Dean Dr. Otto B. Schacht and incoming Dean Dr. Barry Evans.

Dr. Schacht is stepping down as Dean of the School of Business, a position he has held since 2002. Schacht has been professor of business since joining Wayland in 1999.

He will return to the classroom fulltime with plans to retire in a couple of years.

Dr. Barry Evans, who has been with Wayland since 2011, will take over as Dean of the School.

Fellow faculty and staff members gathered in the hall of the Nunn Business Building to celebrate the transition. Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Bobby Hall addressed the group with words for Dr. Schacht’s wife, Madonna.

“I told Dr. Schacht that I have fought a good fight for a number of years to get him to remain as the Dean, but eventually Madonna won,” Hall said. “I throw in the towel, Madonna, you beat me.”

All kidding aside, Hall said it was a privilege to have worked with Dr. Schacht over the years and he looks forward to working with Dr. Evans in the leadership role.

Along with Dr. Evans’ promotion to dean, Dr. Charles Starnes will serves as Associate Dean for Master’s Programs, Dr. Shelley Tapp will remain the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, and Dr. Kelly Warren will serve as Associate Dean for Doctoral Programs.

Templar named Cheer/Dance coach Samantha Templar of Canyon has been hired as cheer and dance coach at Wayland.

Templar, who started dancing at age 3, graduated from Copperas Cove High School before attending Blinn College in Brenham. She won numerous awards for dance both in Templar high school and at Blinn, including a second-place at ADDT Nationals in 2007.

After graduating from West Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s of fine arts in dance in 2010, she served as assistant dance teacher at Tascosa and Palo Duro high schools in Amarillo before becoming dance teacher at Amarillo and Caprock high school. She also taught dance at Tascosa.

She also has served as dance instructor at West Texas A&M Dance Academy and Amarillo College and in 2009 performed in the TEXAS Musical Drama in Canyon. Since 2008, she has served as dance studio director, dance instructor and choreographer for Lone Star Dance Academy and Lone Star Ballet in Amarillo.

Harp, Evans receive NAIA honor Tom Harp, the head men’s and women’s golf coach, and Logan Evans, a pitcher on the Wayland Baptist baseball team, both received character awards

for the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Harp, the men’s golf coach since 2001 and women’s coach since starting the program in Harp 2008, was named the Coach of Character for the SAC and will now be in contention for the NAIA Coach of Character Award.

Earlier this year, Evans Harp was named the SAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year.

Evans, a 2011 graduate of Plainview High School, received the Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award for the SAC. Like Harp, Evans now moves into a pool with all the other winners at the conference level to be considered for award nationally. Evans was named the Bill Hardage Champions of Character Award winner for Wayland at its end of the year athletic banquet.

Anchorage SHRM recognized The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recognized Wayland Baptist University (WBU), Anchorage Campus SHRM Student Chapter 5583 with the Outstanding Student Chapter award for academic year 2013-2014. The Student Chapter President, Megan Hughes remarked: “Our chapter competed with 459 other university and college student chapters. Our Student Chapter was one of 19 selected with this

distinguished award. Additionally, This is the second year in a row that the WBU, Anchorage Campus SHRM Student Chapter received the Outstanding Student Chapter award.”

The Outstanding Student Chapter Award was announced at the national SHRM conference in Orlando, June 22.

For academic year 20132014, the WBU, Anchorage Campus SHRM Student Chapter members focused their efforts in two directions. Members focused externally on community service.

The student chapter engaged in four community service projects aimed at supporting the mission of Bean’s Café.

These four projects delivered resources necessary to support the homeless and working poor population that Bean’s Café serves. The first project was a winter clothing drive; the second project was raising funds to purchase 10 Thanksgiving turkeys; the third project was “beanie boxes” for Christmas presents, and the last project was the chapter’s fourth annual Idita-Roll toilet paper drive for Bean’s Café.

Chapter members enlisted community members, government agencies, and Anchorage businesses into this project.

Bean’s Café uses more than 56,000 rolls of toilet paper in support of more than 500 homeless and working poor. The chapter drive raised 12,556 rolls.

More importantly, the student chapter’s efforts raised the awareness within the Anchorage community for basic human needs at Bean’s Café.

Cleveland pens new book

wo years after compiling a book of letters written to her late husband – a basketball legend in the Panhandle-Plains region – Libby Cleveland has gathered a wealth of coaching knowledge in a second publication called “Letters from Coach.”

While “Letters for Coach: Remembering the Legacy of Coach Kenneth Cleveland” contained many remembrances about Cleveland from former players, fans and others, the new book contains his meticulous workout schedules, coaching ideas and letters to parents.

The new publication actually is a notebook prepared by Cleveland telling his Bobcats how he wanted them to behave with their families, in the classroom and in the community.

“He always said family comes first,” said Mrs. Cleveland, who has taught math at Wayland Baptist University since 1994, a year after her husband died at age 57 when struck by lightning while seeking shelter from a storm on a family vacation in New Mexico.

“Every year, he took a yellow pad and wrote out every day’s practice schedule and what the team would do each day,” Libby related. “As I was looking through a big collection of materials, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, these are Kenneth’s words.’

“I asked my son Kevin (who played on consecutive state championship teams for his

father in 1981-82 and 1982-83) if he thought it would be good to have a book on how to be a coach and he said it would be marvelous,” she explained.

Cleveland, a former University of Texas player who is an inductee of the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, compiled a record of 856-247 (77.6 percent) with three state titles (Dimmitt also won in 1975.) He garnered 27 district championships, including his last 18 years of coaching. Twenty-nine of his 32 teams won 20 or more games.

His overall coaching record was 887-227, ninth best in the nation when he died.

“Kenneth would prepare the information and I did some drawings to make it a little more interesting and he ran the sheets off on a mimeograph machine.

He wrote down exactly what he did in coaching and how he did it. Kevin said Kenneth would call the players into a classroom and give each one a notebook and they went through it page by page.

“I mentioned it to several former players and they said they still have their book. I’m sure 90 percent still have their book,” Libby surmised.

She said she also found an article her husband wrote for Texas Coach magazine entitled “Basketball in the Small School” (classes 1A, 2A and 3A) and asked in the first sentence, “What are the ingredients that make a good, successful program in the small school systems of Texas?”

At the end of the 2 ½-page article, Cleveland said, “Yes, we play basketball 12 months a year in Dimmitt. That’s because that’s all the time we have in one year.”

“Kenneth took some criticism because he never closed the gym,” Libby said. “After the season ends, we keep players who only play basketball in the gym in the spring, then we start summer basketball and the yearly cycle begins again,” he wrote.

(Editor’s Note: The following is a report from WBU alum Autumn Schaub, BS ‘09, about her experiences with Love Thy Neighborhood ministry in Louisville, KY. The ministry was started by WBU alum Kiana Bullard Brown BA’10. Schaub wrote this following her experience with LTN in 2011. She currently lives in Pampa, TX, and works as the Recreation Coordinator for the City of Pampa.)

I

have been doing the LTN program for seven months now, and during this time God has shown me what true ministry is. Ministry is giving everything of yourself without expecting anything. You do it out of love! Jesus told us the first and greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength. The second is to love our neighbors as ourselves.

You can see a difference in people when you give them your all, expecting nothing back. As Christians, we are not perfect people but God uses us, imperfect vessels, to do His perfect will here on earth. Some examples of ministry at Louisville Rescue Mission are checking someone’s mail or answering the phone, fixing a meal or giving someone a towel or wash cloth, taking attendance in a class or showing someone how to do something on the computers.

It’s attending a memorial service for a resident or rejoicing with a former resident who has accepted Christ. Anything I do can be ministry, as long as I am giving God the glory.

As the Bible says, do all things for the glory of God! If I’m not giving God the glory in everything I do while serving Him, then being a part of this ministry means nothing. I have learned if I approach LTN’s ministry with this attitude, then I will reflect the love of God. Every ministry has its ups and downs. It is not meant to be easy whatsoever. Serving with LTN has been a hard experience, but it definitely has been worth it. I have learned to be thankful in the little things God does, instead of concentrating

only on the big things He does.

A CHANGED MAN Derrick was a resident at the beginning of my service term at Louisville Rescue Mission. He had to leave in December due to kidney problems. I was sad to find this out. Just recently, he came by LRM to see everyone. While he was in the program he was not a Christian and didn’t know much about being one. I was happy to see him since I didn’t get to say goodbye to him when he left the program.

My teammate asked him why he was at LRM. He said, “I just wanted to tell ya’ll thank you.” He took his earbuds out of his ears and said, “God got me, man. And I just want to thank y’all for everything you did for me.” Derrick knocked on the door where the residents were. My teammate and I listened outside the door as he began to cry and tell the guys what God did in his life. After a few minutes, he came out of the room and said, “I know I didn’t get it before, but all of a sudden it just hit me.

I was just walking down the street, and it hit me.” He told us he quit drinking and doing drugs. “And I’m still working on my language.” He will also attend real estate school. “I wanna take my skills from selling drugs, and I’m gonna flip ‘em around and sell houses. And I’m gonna do it honestly.”

I was so excited to hear this news.

Derrick is a changed man, and I am so thankful for the work God is doing in his life. I still see Derrick every now and then at church, and he also attends a weekly community group.

MY PRAYER I ask that you specifically pray for the opportunities God gives us to talk to the residents at LRM, the homeless guests and our neighbors. Pray that I will give light to others who are living in darkness. Pray that I will give God the glory as I serve Him and be thankful during the ups and downs while doing God’s work!

Staying in touch with local and worldwide missions

C

atching a breath from a whirlwind year of mission and ministry in Plainview, Detroit, Brazil, Kenya, Macedonia, Kosova, and Greece, the Wayland Mission Center continues to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and live out the love of God through the lives of students and many others in West Texas.

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, and touched by the lostness and suffering of so many in our world, we are working to engage students, faculty, staff, and others who are friends of our University system in becoming involved in the vast mission of God. We are thrilled at the tremendous mission spirit of so many across Wayland, from Hawaii campus to Anchorage campus, to Kenya program, and beyond! The scope of mission endeavors ranges from the local mentoring program of Apostolos, to the backpack feeding program of Diakonia, to the proclamation and witnessing ministry of Kerygma, to domestic and international endeavors.

In the new academic year — 20142015 — Apostolos mentoring program will be anchored by two very capable mission student co-directors, Matthew Feril and Sarah Kelly. Feril and Kelly have served as assistant co-directors in this partnering program with Plainview High School and Plainview Christian Academy, and will provide substantive leadership to this ministry now in its sixth year. They will be assisted by Jennifer Allen and Cody Lindberg, both sophomores.

Apostolos, begun in response to a vision of mission, serves youth at risk from the two high schools in Plainview.

Strong WBU young men are partnered with youth boys, and strong WBU young women are partnered with youth girls, with the strategic task of keeping students in school, and decreasing social problems such as teen pregnancy, drug abuse, gang activity, and teen suicide.

Dr. Debra Lavender-Bratcher, Associate Professor of Sociology, greatly assists in the training of our WBU students.

Diakonia feeding program will take on a new configuration in 2014-2015, working hand-in-hand with the Snack Packs 4 Kids Program, newly launched in Plainview Independent School District. Co-directors Rachel Bartel, Nicole Adams, and Bryce Hollingsworth will continue in leadership, enlisting WBU students in packing snack packs of food for children each week. Diakonia will work closely with Wayland grad Greg Brown, Executive Director in PISD. Kerygma will see the return of WBU junior Ashley Jane Price, back from a semester of mission in Kenya. Price will join WBU senior Jon-Lucas Poe in proclaiming the Good News of Christ on the east side of Plainview.

Working closely with the Iglesia Bautista Date Street, Kerygma will continue to go door-to-door, seeking to assist persons in prayer and in other ways. Price and Poe, both inter-cultural missions majors, will provide sterling leadership to other students in coordinating mission efforts in Plainview.

Short-term mission trips in 2015 will include a January trip to Kenya (designed for those who are not students, but interested in doing mission work in east Africa), a Spring Break mission to

PETER A. HAENTZSCHEL, former technical director for the Wayland Theater Department in the late 1970s and early 1980s, died March 21, 2014, in New Britain, Conn. at age 70. He worked for the New Britain United Way for 25 years. Surviving are his wife Suzanne, a brother and two sisters.

DR. BILLIE HENDERSON, dean of the Lifelong Learning Center in the 1980s, died June 16, 2014, in Wichita Falls, Texas at age 89.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he held posts at Arizona Western, the American University in Beirut, Lebanon and Lamar, Colo., Community College.

He also worked for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Muriel, his wife of 69 years, died June 22, 2013 in Wichita Falls. Surviving are two daughters, four brothers,

Rodolfo Hernandez, father of BECKI GONZALES, assistant to the Director of Church Services, died July 4, 2014, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, at age 78. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he worked for many years in social service agencies and also was a lay minister. Also surviving are his wife of 56 years, Estella, two sons, four daughters, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frederick Earl Meeks Sr., father of DR. FRED MEEKS, emeritus professor of Religion and Philosophy, died July 2, 2014, in Lubbock at age 91. A World War II veteran, he owned and operated the Town House Cafeteria in Greenville until he retired in 1974. Also surviving are his wife Lillie Mae, another son, five granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. (fmeeks@ wbu.edu) Gertrude Louise Murphree died July 30, 2014, in Friona, Texas, at age 89. She was the mother of DANNY MUR-

PHREE, BS’69, Executive Director of Property Management, and his wife LINDA ALLEN MURPHREE, BA’71, who teaches in the School of Education; CAROLYN MURPHREE WISEMAN, BA’77 and her husband KEVIN WISEMAN, BS’77; JIM MURPHREE, BS’80; and Joe Murphree, who formerly worked in Maintenance at WBU; two sisters, a brother, 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Curtis Murphree, a Wayland trustee from 1970-79, died in 2004. They had been married for 59 years. She was a farm wife and homemaker.

Wiley D. ‘Bud’ Nance Jr. died Feb. 24, 2014, in San Angelo, at age 86. A retired farmer, he was the husband of LORAINE LINKE NANCE, counselor for women and director of religious activities from 1959-67 and associate registrar and from 1983-93.

the San Antonio campus, died Aug. 10, 2014, in San Antonio, at age 60. She began working for Wayland in various capacities in 1992, including business office manager for the San Antonio campus. Surviving are her husband of 40 years, DR. TIM PARKER, Professor of Religion at the San Antonio campus, three children, a brother and a sister.

Mariano Diaz Rendon Sr., grandfather of AMY RENDON LOAFMAN, BA’08, ME.d’12, died July 26, 2014, in Midland, Texas, at age 71. He and his first wife, Maria, founded the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry. Also surviving are his second wife, Martha, three daughters, a son, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Amy, who had served as Assistant Alumni Director for the past year, is a new kindergarten teacher at Thunderbird Elementary in Plainview.

Doug Yates and Janelle Yates, parents of KATHY BURTON, Coordinator of Accounts Receivable at Wayland, and in-laws of Wayland Police Chief LONNIE BURTON, died June 27, 2014, in Lamesa, Texas, at age 80 and July 23, 2014, in Lamesa at age 83, respectively. They were married for 62 years and he was a U.S. Navy veteran, a welder and ginner. Also surviving are their son, GARY YATES, BA’77, Minister of Education at College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview, two sisters and a brother of Janelle’s,

taught elementary school for 27 years. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Larry, a son, a daughter, two brothers, a sister and six grandchildren.

FRANKIE L. CARTER, BA’58, died April 28, 2014, in Wortham, Texas at age 93. One of the first African-Americans to graduate from Wayland, she was a longtime teacher in the Plainview school district. Survivors include a host of nieces and nephews.

REV. B. GENE GRACE, EX’54, died Sept. 16, 2013, in Dallas at age 81. He pastored

12 churches between 1953 and 2008, including Memorial Baptist and Westwood Baptist in Waco, was moderator for five Baptist associations and served on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Cason Grace, three sons, two daughters, a sister, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. DALE WAYNE NEWTON, BA’60, died May 26, 2014, in Plainview at age 78. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he taught and coached Navajo children for 21 years and was superintendent of schools in Sanders, Ariz. He and his wife, RONDELLE CARTER NEWTON, BA’59, farmed and raised miniature horses south of Plainview. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, three sons, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Norma Lee Spradling Igo, 88, died May 5, 2014, in Lamesa, Texas at age 88. A homemaker, she was married to the late Rev. Clifton Igo for 73 years as he pastored churches in Grayson, Collin, Lubbock and Dawson counties, and in Colorado Springs and Greeley, Colo. She had served as secretary at Second Baptist Church in Lamesa. 1950s HIROSHI TANAMACHI, BA’53, is a retired psychotherapist who does volunteer work with the homeless in metropolitan Louisville, Ky., and is involved in longterm care reform. He and his wife, Venus, a retired registered nurse, have two sons and a daughter.

1960s YOSHIGO SHIGA BURKE, BA’63, recalls coming to Wayland in 1958 and singing with the International Choir. She was able to give her testimony of being saved in Ayabe, Kyoto, Japan, at age 16.

Matthew Fisher of Louisville, Ky., son of Dr. Thomas Fisher, Campus Dean/Executive Director of the Altus, Okla. campus, completed his degree requirements through the Virtual Campus for a BAS in Business Management in the spring but was unable to attend the ceremony. So his dad presented him his diploma at a family gathering in Ruidoso, N.M. Matthew currently is a GS-9 at Fort Knox in personnel and is a Chief Warrant Officer 2 in the U.S. Army Reserves. He is the commander of a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Response unit. Matthew’s dad has a BA from Wayland; his mom, Kelly, has a BS and M.Ed.; his wife, Mary Feril Fisher, has a BA and his brother, Zachary, is a sophomore at the Plainview campus.

She has operated a kindergarten school for many years and has worked with two families that have sent more than 400 missionaries all over the world. CONNY CURTIS, EX’66, who met at Wayland in early 1963, celebrated 50 years of marriage recently at a party with friends and family in Georgetown, Texas. Marty (MA, Indiana University) retired from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 2009 as a technical writer/editor/graphic designer after a long career in university, nonprofit and government public relations. She continues a freelance practice in Georgetown. Conny (Ph.D, University

of Oklahoma) is a retired forensic psychologist. They have two daughters – Kristin Mozelle Curtis, basketball coach and special ed teacher at Georgetown High School, and Carly Clay Alvarez, wife and homemaker, who lives in Chatham, N.J. with husband Ray and grandchildren, Arden, 7, and Tyler, 5, Alvarez. Marty is active in First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown, where she is editor of the monthly newsletter and works on other projects needing graphic design and writing/ editing skills. DR. BOB SENA, BA’68, has been named Hispanic relations consultant to the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. He will work to strengthen participation of Hispanic churches in Southern Baptist life and will be responsible in assisting the Convention in building better relationships among Hispanics, promoting Cooperative Program and stewardship development among Hispanic churches, assisting in encouraging Hispanic leaders to serve on committees and trustee boards, and assisting in global evangelical relations within the Spanish-speaking cultures in North America and around the world. He will continue as director of the Hispanic Doctor of Ministry program at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. He has been married for 48 years to PRISCILLA URQUIDEZ SENA, BA’69.

STEVEN PETTIT, BS’85,

a Brandenburg Intermediate School Special Education teacher, recently was named Duncanville Teacher of the Year. He has taught in the Duncanville district since 1998. He pastored a Southern Baptist church in the Pacific Northwest for three years.

Then for six years, he worked in a residential treatment facility with emotionally disturbed adolescents with borderline IQs. He and his wife Donna have a son and a daughter.

1990s KAREN AITKEN, AAS’92, BSOE’93 from the Hawaii campus, recently was the subject of a profile in a publication from the Boerne ISD near San Antonio. The Air Force veteran has taught for 17 years, 10 at Fabra Elementary School.

She has written two children’s books – “The Forest of Fear” and “The Tall Tale Teller,” the beginning of a series she plans to write to promote character development among students.

KEVIN CARTER, BBA’93, recently resigned after almost five years as Executive Director of the Plainview/Hale

County Economic Development Corporation for a similar post with The High Ground of Texas, a 75-member regional marketing coalition that was founded in 1988 and represents the top 67 counties in Texas. Its main purpose is to create jobs and increase the tax base of the region. Carter, a member of the alumni board, will continue to office in Plainview. His wife, ALISSA HAMBRIGHT CARTER, ME.D’05, is an administrator for the Plainview Independent School District. Their son Blaine will be a sophomore at Plainview High School. Before joining PHCEDC, Carter was associated with Covenant Hospital Plainview for 14 years and was with Cargill Beef Solutions prior to that. He is immediate past president of the Plainview Lions Club.

SCOTT DAVIS, BS’91, and MICHELLE ASHCRAFT DAVIS, BA’92, report that their oldest son, Daxton (pictured above), is graduating from high school this year.

“His first home was Fleming-Mays Tower as we were dorm parents when he was born. He also was the first baby to ‘carry’ a book from the old library to the new one when we passed them along

the line,” Michelle writes. Scott is the National Director of Classical Schools for Responsive Education Solutions located in Lewisville, Texas.

Michelle teaches part-time at a classical school called Coram Deo Academy and teaches swimming lessons in the summer. Their other children are Devin, 13, and Ellisyn, 11. (michelledavis10@gmail.com) JODY FORD, BS’97, recently took a new position within the Texas A&M Foundation – Director of Development for the College of Education and Human Development. He is responsible for fundraising efforts, which includes working closely with the dean and his leadership team to identify and prioritize the needs of the college and work with donors.

Jody has been with the Texas A&M Foundation for more than nine years and has served in various capacities. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children – daughter Skylar (10) and son Hunter (7). Jody would enjoy hearing from his friends from WBU on Facebook or LinkedIn.

PAM McCLEMENT JOHNSON, BS’02, and husband Aaron live in Fort Polk, La., where he is a major in the U.S. Army. Married seven years, the couple has a son, Aaron James II, “A.J.,” who turned 1 on June 29. Pam was honored in April by the 162nd Infantry Brigade for her volunteer work with the group. The

family will be reassigned in the fall to Champaign, Ill., where Aaron will be an assistant professor of military science at the University of Illinois. 2010s SARA DELISE ABBOTT, BSIS’10 from the Lubbock campus, and Patrick LoRe Kanaby, both of Houston, were married June 14 at Longwood Golf Club in Cypress, near Houston. Sara is a teacher at Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and Patrick is a coach for the district.

HILDON BOEN, BS’13, completed the 16-week course and graduated from the highly-competitive, U.S. Army Combat Medic Training with the 232d Medical Battalion at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. His rank is Specialist.

After a two-week recruiting stint in Lubbock, Hildon reported for permanent assignment at Fort Hood, Texas. Per Army tradition, he has won the combat medic title of “Doc.”A native of Kenya and former track All-American for the Pioneers, he volunteered to be an Army soldier and completed his basic training at Fort Sill, OK. His commitment for military service qualified him for U.S. citizenship.

DR. AMBER BROOKS, BS’14 from the San Antonio campus, is a pediatric chiropractor and owner of Whole Child Wellness in Dallas (www. mychildwellness.com).

KEVIN BURROW, BA’10,

recently received his Master of Divinity degree from Truett Seminary at Baylor and was recognized as the outstanding student of the year for Truett Seminary. He was a President’s Ambassador while at Wayland.

L. PARKER FRANCIS, BAS’13 from the Virtual Campus, recently received an alumni pin and noted that he wears it every day. A native of Clovis, N.M., he is an operations supervisor for Waste Connections Inc. Parker writes: “Our regional HR director and I were in a division meeting in Pismo Beach, Calif. and she noticed my pin. Come to find out, she received her master’s degree through Wayland. What a small world we live in. We look forward to seeing you guys this fall at Homecoming.”

Communications in May from West Texas A&M University in Canyon. She has been the Student Orientation Coordinator at WT since April 2012.

She oversees 25 students who help with orientation and stay in contact with new students throughout the year. She also creates and implements orientations for new freshmen and transfer students. (apalser@ wtamu.edu) LT. HENRY REYES, MPA’12, has been promoted to deputy chief (assistant jail administrator, in-custody detention services) for the Bexar County Sheriff ’s Office.

Reyes grew up in San Antonio and has nearly 15 years of experience in the field of jail operations. He is scheduled to complete his Master of Arts degree in Management from Wayland in November.

“Getting my graduate degree from WBU really opened so many doors for me and I am forever grateful,” Henry writes.

His wife, Michelle, a sergeant with the sheriff ’s office, is finishing her bachelor’s degree in Justice Administration from Wayland. They have two children, Henry, 15, and Renee, 10. (hmreyes02@yahoo.com)

As previously mentioned, Ashley Jane Price has returned from a semester of mission in central and

western Kenya. Price was instrumental in helping poor women to launch small businesses through micro-loans.

Though forewarned that she would experience many difficult moments, trials, and tribulations, and that she might even return to the U.S. early, Price was stalwart in continuing the work from early January through mid-July 2014.

churches, women’s groups, and others about her experiences in Africa, or her local work in Plainview through Kerygma.

Thankful to God for the privilege, we are excited to follow God’s hand at work in this world. Now is the time to be involved in God’s mission!
