THE PANEL
MODERATOR Val Zavala spent 30 years as a broadcast journalist at KCET public television in Los Angeles winning numerous journalism awards, including 19 L.A. Area Emmy® Awards. She retired in 2018. During her time at LA’s preeminent PBS station she served as a reporter, anchor, producer and V.P. of News and Public Affairs. For much of that time she was also anchor of Life & Times and executive producer/anchor of SoCal Connected. She covered a broad spectrum of Southern California issues including politics, education, healthcare, environment, demographics, the economy, arts and culture.
She received her undergraduate degree from Yale University and a masters in journalism from American University in Washington D.C.
She currently serves on the board of the combined KCET and PBS SoCal public broadcasting company and is very involved in the local community. She lives in Altadena with her artist-husband Mark and their dog Casey.

PANELIST Eraka Bath, M.D. Dr. Bath is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Department of Psychiatry, and senior advisor for the UCLA DGSOM Antiracism Roadmap (ARR). Board certified in child and adolescent, adult and forensic psychiatry, she has a long-standing interest in community mental health and has committed her career to advancing health equity for ethnoracially minoritized and structurally marginalized youth and families, with specialized focus on youth impacted by the foster care and juvenile legal systems. She has dedicated her time to working with structurally vulnerable populations and consults regularly with the court system. Her portfolio of research has included funding from the National Institutes of Health, PCORI, and Los Angeles County Department of Probation. She teaches on structural racism and antiracism, and its impacts on mental health and biomedical research and workforce. As a senior strategist to the ARR, she leads or co-leads a variety of initiatives, including but not limited to, Restorative Justice, the Racial Justice Report Card, the Antiracist Transformation in Medical Education, JEDI Academic Mentoring Council and the Black Latinx Native American Faculty Collective. Her current research involves using community participatory models to increase engagement in behavioral and reproductive health for girls with histories of commercial sexual exploitation and those involved in the child welfare and juvenile legal system.

THE PANEL
PANELIST Dr. Curley L. Bonds oversees all clinical practices for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) in his role as Chief Medical Officer. He earned his B.A. in sociology at Emory University and his M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in adult psychiatry at the Semmel Institute for Neuroscience at UCLA.
Dr. Bonds is a board-certified adult psychiatrist with extensive experience in a variety of clinical, academic and research settings. He is a Professor of Psychiatry at Charles R. Drew University and a Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Dr. Bonds is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Fellow of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.
PANELIST John E. Kobara is a facilitator of change. He is a social entrepreneur specializing in building and growing organizations through change management and innovation with a focus on positive social justice outcomes. Kobara is currently the managing partner at Random Acts of Progress, where he facilitates change for organizations and individuals to fully express their potential to focus on building a more joyful, equitable, just and compassionate world. He coaches donors, foundations and for-purpose leaders to align their work to their passions and priorities.
Prior to his retirement in 2020, John worked primarily in the non-profit arena, interrupted by for-profit start-ups and public-sector jobs. He served for 12 years as EVP and COO for the California Community Foundation. It was his 18th position since graduating from college. John was engaged in three pioneering start-ups traversing education and entertainment.

John has held volunteer leadership positions at a wide variety of regional, national and international non-profit organizations in the arts, education and philanthropy. John currently serves on the boards of the MLK Community Hospital Foundation, Cities4Peace, Japanese American National Museum, Southern California Golf Foundation and Walden University.
He and his wife Sarah serve as Executive Producers of the recently released and award winnig documentary: The Race Epidemic-The Resurgence of the Yellow Peril, a unique and timely film catalyzed by the virus of hate and violence against innocent Asian-Americans.
John was a Coro Fellow in LA and earned degrees from UCLA, USC and Occidental College.
