ROTTERDAM: The Map of Experiences

Page 1

ROTTERDAM

The map of experiences

Rotterdam, the city where our paths intersected, holds a special place in our hearts. It is not just a physical location but a home, be it a second, third, or even fourth home. Although guidebooks are commonly used to explore new places and gain a general understanding of a city, we must question their ‘truth’s and relatability. Does every person perceive and understand the information in guidebooks in the same way? How do our backgrounds and experiences shape our individual perspectives of Rotterdam? What remains unmentioned and overlooked in these guidebooks?

This guide aims to challenge the typical representation of Rotterdam found in guidebooks and tourist information. Instead we created a counter map that incorporates the thoughts, experiences, and preferences of individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and heritages.

This guidebook and the maps are made for you and by you.

Conclusion

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Map of Experiences seeks to represent the emotions, experiences, and diversity of Rotterdam’s inhabitants. We recognize that what may seem odd, different, or unknown to one person may be the norm for another. By including a wide range of perspectives, we provide space for individuals to speculate and create your own reality of Rotterdam.

The Map of Experiences consists of a current representation of Rotterdam which is the base (plain) layer. The other layers will be incorporating the changes, additions, removals, and preferences of individuals displayed and catagorized by color.

It is designed as a guidebook that you can interact with and customize based on your own preferences. It offers a transparency and multiple layers between experiences that can be arranged together or separately. This approach allows you to engage with the map in a way that resonates with your own understanding of Rotterdam, fostering a sense of ownership and personal connection to the city.

You are encouraged to switch up the order of the layers, though they are categorised in this book by links to the ‘before’, ‘during’ and ‘after’ of being in this space (Rotterdam), where each layer is transparent, allowing to see through all at once.

Enjoy and experiment with playing with the layers and emodying your own view of the city as a space, community and a body.

EXPECTATIONS

I thought that Rotterdam would be a great place to move into because of the similarities with my home city Kyiv. Size, highrise buildings, speed of living, activities, nightlife, big population, opportunities.

Stela, Bulgarian

I had the impression that Rotterdam had a reputation for being somewhat unsafe. It is primarily known for its strong focus on business and the dominance of car-centric transportation.

Mandie, Dutch

I didn’t have a lot of information. To me, it was the city of the biggest European harbor. Not much more.

Côme, French

Before

I thought it was stinky and overly corporate.

Anonymous

I thought a lot of arrogant people lived there. Julia, Dutch

I didn’t expect it to be this modern. I used to think that Amsterdam was similar to Rotterdam, but I was surprised at how modern Rotterdam actually is (I knew that it was rebuilt after the war) but didn’t realize that it would be this big and modern. Nancy, Dutch

I Truthfully did not know much about it, when I first came I was a little disappointed because there weren’t many traditional houses and it seemed very urban which intimidated me, however after spending a year here I have fallen in love with the city and it’s even better the way it is.

- Daniela, Spanish

I had the assumption that it would be a city with antique buildings like a typical European city. The WWII however, begged to differ. Lan, Vietnamese

I thought it was a modern and diverse student city. Zuzia, Polish

In my head, before I came here it was - weed and bikes. Anonymous

I thought it would be a mini NYC.

Nicolas, Swiss

I based my opinion on the Ukrainian travel show haha. I thought it was a big walkable city with cool architecture and a lot of bridges. Sasha, Ukrainian

CULTURE SHOCK

Architecture is completely different from where I’m from. Rotterdam is a very functional city, with broad avenues and high buildings. It’s also extremely noisy and busy.

Côme, French

It’s more global and diverse, I like the fact that it has great public transport and it’s well adapted to cyclists overall it’s a beautiful city I love the architecture and that there are lots of parks and other green areas to hang out.

Antonia, Polish

People are more open to each other. Also, there are more events for young people than in my home country.

Iga, Polish

Due to my family’s relocation, I moved from Suriname to Rotterdam. They had already settled in Rotterdam, and later on, I made the move as well, primarily driven by the employment prospects and the advanced level of development in Rotterdam. In contrast, Suriname is still in the process of development

Tram driver, Surinamese

More brand advertisements, more policemen, and more frequent public transport.

Julia, Dutch

Rotterdam is a stunning city with lots of beauty. Even though it can be crowded, it’s surprisingly clean. The way things work here is quite unique compared to other places. The city embraces a diverse culture however it feels like there’s a lot more respect among people in my home country, Armenia.

In Austria, people tend to be more structured and place great importance on punctuality, which differs from the cultural norms in Rotterdam. As a result, when it comes to topics like timeliness, the initial impression of people from Austria may give the perception of being impolite.

Rotterdam is way more diverse than any city in my country! People look different and speak different languages. The most particular culture shock for me was maybe seeing that people don’t sit next to each other on the metro unless there’s absolutely no other space empty.

Compared to my hometown of Milan, Rotterdam has a captivating Sicilian essence. Both cities exude a similar vibe of creativity, fastpaced culture, and open-mindedness. However, Rotterdam feels more international, offering a delightful blend of diverse cultures and knowledge. The city also provides greater opportunities and space for younger individuals to thrive.

Emma, Italian

People are less social than in Ireland, grocery stores are missing foods I like. Beer in bars is expensive. Colder than I expected in winter, and hotter in summer.

Neala, Irish

Dutch culture in general is funny sometimes. One notable aspect is how even older adults enjoy going out and being active. Mornings in the Netherlands tend to be slower-paced, with fewer people rushing to work at 7:30 like in other cities I’ve been to. Additionally, stores in the Netherlands have early closing times compared to Italy.

Rafaela, Italian

I got bird shit on my shoulder the FIRST day of living in Rotterdam. I happened next to the legs sculptures in front of the Markthall. Stela, Bulgarian

Ilon Mask boat… Explanation - Certainly it was a boat of a gazillionaire but it was Jeff Bezos. The story behind this is that in Rotterdam, a dramatic situation unfolded involving Jeff Bezos’ yacht, “The Flying Fox,” and The Koningshaven bridge built in 1877. As Bezos’ boat arrived in the harbor, it became apparent that the bridge needed reconstruction to allow the yacht to pass through. The issue quickly escalated as discussions ensued regarding the urgency and feasibility of reconstructing the bridge. The drama captured the city’s attention as the fate of the bridge and the yacht’s passage remained uncertain, adding further intrigue to the unfolding story.

One late night, when we were really drunk and past the time allowed during the lockdown, we had a wild idea. We wanted to make a little rooftop apartment, so we decided to take two pallets from an unattended pile. It was around midnight, and we knew we could get in trouble and face a fine. While we were trying to figure out how to carry the pallets, a pizza delivery person saw us and tried to lend a hand. But, unfortunately, even with their help, we couldn’t manage it. Well, we were pretty drunk, so it wasn’t easy.

PERSONAL STORIES

During

We’re a couple in our 70s, happily married for a long time. Our journey began 40 years ago in Brussels when we both worked for a company called Swift. Living in a different country brings new experiences, and we had to figure out many things. I, the wife, am from San Francisco and have traveled the world. My husband was born in the UK but moved to Australia with his family when he was 7, so he feels more Australian than British.

We’ve been living in Florida for the past 25 years. We fell in love with it during a cruise and decided to make it our home. Now we’re in Rotterdam to explore its modern and diverse architecture. The city is clean and beautiful, and we’re excited to take a guided tour to see everything. We’ve been using the train to travel around the Netherlands, and their public transport system is fantastic—so modern and clean. Rotterdam is our favorite because Amsterdam seems a bit messy to us.

Currently, we’re on a journey as part of our cruise ship travel around Europe. We’re spending two weeks in the Netherlands, and during our visit to the Van Gogh Museum, we met two women from Ukraine, one living here and the other in Germany. We also met people from Poland who now reside in Norway. It’s fascinating to see how much Europeans travel between countries. In the USA, it’s not as common due to various reasons. We believe traveling and moving to different places is a wonderful way to learn and grow. It opens your mind to new cultures and broadens your perspective. You’re fortunate to attend an international school with a diverse group of people. Take advantage of this time to explore, learn, and educate yourself. There will be a time for starting a family and raising children, but now is the perfect moment to discover new places and gain knowledge. Traveling has taught us so much, and we’ve come to understand things better by experiencing different cultures. Make the most of this opportunity and enjoy the journey.

One night, my friend and I went out for a lot of drinks. We were having a great time! Later, we decided to go to a techno club. On our way back home, we stopped for a delicious kebab. We moved from a small village in the Netherlands because everyone there had an opinion about everything, and it made us think twice about everything we did. But here in Rotterdam, it’s different. You can just do what you want without worrying about others’ opinions. Plus, everything is conveniently located nearby. I work on a farm, and my partner works at a hospital, so Rotterdam was the most practical choice for us. Unlike the small towns we come from, Rotterdam is open and welcoming. It’s a city of the future, where new ideas and opportunities abound. We really like it here—it’s fresh and not too crowded. We’ve decided to

The first time I visited Rotterdam, I knew I would be studying there. I met up with my future roommates and we decided to have a drink at Bazaar in Witte de With. I’ll never forget the feeling of excitement as I sat there, knowing I was about to start a new chapter in my life. It was only 3 pm, but all the terraces were bustling with people and the atmosphere was amazing. The city had such a vibrant and welcoming vibe that I instantly felt at home.

WHEN YOU THINK OF ROTTERDAM

When I think of Rotterdam, several things come to mind. First, the city’s unique shape, characterized by its squares and geometric structures. The architecture in Rotterdam is also quite distinctive, often described as weird, creative, and playful. I notice the cheaply built houses made of bricks, and the sturdy pavements that line the streets. As I walk around, I can hear the rattling sound of crossroads and the melodic bells of the trams passing by. And let’s not forget the seagulls, adding their presence to the city’s soundscape. These elements contribute to the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere of Rotterdam.

Côme, French

When I think of Rotterdam, one of the famous figures that comes to mind is the philosopher Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus. Erasmus was a renowned philosopher, theologian, and humanist during the Renaissance period. He was born in Rotterdam and is widely regarded as one of the greatest thinkers of his time. Erasmus’s works were influential in challenging the established norms and advocating for critical thinking, religious tolerance, and education. His most famous work, “The Praise of Folly,” satirized the societal and religious practices of his era. As a native of Rotterdam, Erasmus holds a special place in the city’s history and intellectual legacy. His ideas continue to resonate and inspire generations of scholars and thinkers.

Before the war, there used to be a theater called Tivoli across from the current City Hall in Rotterdam, known as Stadhuis. It was in this theater that a tragic event took place involving Margareta Zelle, also known as Mata Hari. Mata Hari was a famous Dutch dancer known for her exotic performances. Unfortunately, she met a tragic fate on October 15th, 1917, when she was accused by French forces of being a spy for Germany. This accusation aligned with her mysterious and seductive persona as a dancer, but according to some sources, and what I believe, she was not actually a spy. Many believe that the French were simply looking for someone to blame. Mata Hari, who hailed from Leeuwarden, had become a renowned figure and had come to Rotterdam. In addition to my connection to Mata Hari, I was also close friends with the anarchist anti-artist Willem de Ridder. He shared untold details about Rotterdam, revealing a different side of the city that often goes unspoken or overlooked.

D EOnce upon a time, in the heart of Rotterdam, stood the magnificent Tivoli Theater on Coolsingel 25. It was a place of wonder and entertainment, originally founded by the talented actor and director Jan Cornelis de Vos Sr. and Willem van Korlaar. Designed by the esteemed architect Abraham Salm, the theater boasted a grand interior and featured a delightful café-restaurant called D. Deinum. Since its opening on October 4, 1890, the Tivoli Theater became a beloved destination for theater enthusiasts. The first floor housed balconies and galleries, offering splendid views of the performances. The Winter Garden, designed by the renowned IJme Gerardus Bijvoets, opened its doors on March 29, 1891, adding a touch of enchantment to the theater. It was within this magical Winter Garden that the first permanent cinema in the Netherlands was established in 1903, captivating audiences with the wonders of moving pictures. However, tragedy struck in May 1940, during the dark days of World War II. The Tivoli Theater, along with its rich history and treasured memories, fell victim to destruction. The theater’s closure and subsequent demolition left a void in the hearts of the people of Rotterdam.

Though physically gone, the spirit of Tivoli Theater lives on in the memories of those who once reveled in its splendor. It remains a testament to the power of art and culture, reminding us of the importance of preserving our heritage and cherishing the places that bring us joy and inspiration.

YOUR CITY

Design your own city layer inspired by your hometown. To provide you with an example of how it can be done, we’ll superimpose the key landmarks and districts of New York onto Rotterdam. For instance, you could draw parallels between the Erasmus Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge, or associate the Kop Van Zuid area with Manhattan. By doing this, you can create a personalized guidebook for a friend, family, or a community from your city, making it easier for them to explore Rotterdam.

Now, you might be wondering, why New York? Well. Rotterdam is often referred to as a miniature version of New York, and- in the Colonial settlement of New York by the Dutch, there is the historic, intergenerational memory of its initial naming as ‘New Amsterdam’.
