Hasta hace un par de años, el mundo del diseño editorial, para mí, estaba aún por descubrir; es más, no prestaba ninguna atención a cómo estaba planteada la información dentro de las revistas ni la manera en la que las imágenes se salían o no de las páginas. Lo pasé tanto por alto que pensaba que ahí no había diseño alguno. La verdad es que no estaba interesada como para importarme, ni para anticipar que cuando descubríese indesign y el diseño editorial me iba a entusiamar tanto crear guías, márgenes y estilos de párrafo. Debo admitir que no soy una estrella del diseño editorial, pero al menos disfruto haciéndolo.

EDITORIAL /INTRO

Until a couple of years ago, the world of editorial design, for me, was still to be discovered; actually, I didn’t use to pay any attention to how the information was given within the magazines or the way in which the images came out of the pages or not. I avoided it so much that I thought there was no kind of design there. The truth is that I was not interested enough to care, nor to anticipate that when I discovered indesign and editorial design I would be enthusiastic about creating guidelines, margins and paragraph styles. I must admit that I am not an editorial design rockstar, but at least I can say I enjoy doing it.

La colección Nuevos Océanos contiene tres libros de aventura de temática marina: La isla del tesoro, El lobo de mar y Moby-Dick. Esta colección gira en torno a la aventura, la búsqueda, y la documentación del trayecto y del pasado. Se ha llegado a representar estos conceptos a través del uso de coordenadas, líneas de recorrido, y motivos de mapas topográficos. También se ha llevado a cabo un proceso de investigación, aportando así mensajes o pistas en el diseño que dan un valor añadido y refuerzan el interés en la historia de cada libro.

Nuevos océanos (new oceans) collection contains three marine adventure books: The Treasure Island, The Sea Wolf and Moby-Dick. This collection talks about the concepts of adventure, search, journey and the past time. These concepts have been represented through the use of coordinates, lines of travel, and topographic maps. It has also carried out a research process, thus providing messages or clues in the design that give added value and reinforce the interest in the story of each book.

8 Durante el proceso de investigación se han analizado las indicaciones hacia los lugares o la descripción de los mismos en cada novela. También se ha acudido a investigaciones sobre las obras en los casos en los que el lugar a situar estuviese sin identificar. Finalmente, en “My Maps” de Google, se han creado las trayectorias de cada barco de a cuerdo a toda la información reunida, y se han recogido en el diseño las coordenadas del lugar de inicio y desenlace de cada historia, así como el número de página en el que el narrador de cada historia menciona por primera vez la llegada o la parada a una nueva localización. Se han implementado estos datos a la trayectoria final con el fin de añadir un sentido cronológico al diseño.

During the research process, the indications to the places or their description in each novel have been analyzed. Research has also been made on the works in cases where the place to be located was unidentified. Finally, in Google’s “My Maps”, the trajectories of each ship have been created according to all the information gathered, and the coordinates of the starting and ending place of each story have been included in the design, as well as the number of page in which the narrator mentions for the first time the arrival or the stop at a new location. These data have been implemented to the final trajectory in order to add a chronological sense to the design.

Las sobrecubiertas han sido impresas en papel poliester. Éste es un papel translúcido que permite el juego de transparencias con las cubiertas.

The book jackets have been printed on polyester paper. This is a translucent paper that allows a game of transparencies between the covers.

En la portada de la sobrecubierta, además del nombre del autor, el título y la gráfica de coordenadas, se ha aplicado un acabado en barniz UV circular, a modo de cristal de brújula, bajo el cual se verá la rosa de los vientos de la cubierta (orientada hacia la posición pertinente). La gráfica hará un juego de transparencias con el mapa topográfico de las cubiertas. En la portada trasera: sinopsis de la novela y parte de la gráfica que cruza la sobrecubierta.

On the front cover of the dust jacket, in addition to the name of the author, the title and the graph of coordinates; a circular UV varnish finish has been applied, like a compass crystal, under which the windrose printed in the books’ covers (oriented towards the relevant position) will be seen. The graphic will make a set of transparencies with the topographic map of the covers. On the back cover: synopsis of the novel and part of the graphic that crosses the book jacket.

En la solapa delantera se han creado retratos decada autor hechos con coordenadas de lugares que se llaman como el susodicho; también aparece su biografía. En la trasera, por lo contrario veremos el logotipo de nuevos océanos y otros títulos de la misma colección, así como otros de la editorial nuevos clásicos.

In the front flap, we can find portraits of each author made with coordinates of places that are named after the authors’ names; their biographies also appears. In the back, on the contrary we will see nuevos océanos’ imagotype and other titles of the same collection, as well as others from the publishing house (nuevos clásicos).

Cubiertas: en cada libro el norte de la rosa de los vientos apunta a direcciones distintas, indicando así cómo se debe ver la trayectoria dibujada en la sobrecubierta. A lo largo de la cubierta hay puntos que coinciden con las paradas de cada viaje.

Covers: in each book the north of the compass rose points to different directions, indicating how to see the trajectory drawn on the book jackets. Along the cover there are points that coincide with the stops of each trip.

Banderas: se pueden extraer una vez leido el libro para usarlas en los puntos de recorrido en el mapa mundi que hace las veces de faja/packaging.

Flags: can be extracted once read the book to use them in the waypoints in the world map that serves as a packaging.

Packaging: mapamundi desplegable, para colgar en la pared y que el lector averigue los puntos de interés. El código de barras está vestido a modo de trayectoria y las gomillas que sujetan la faja hacen las veces de líneas de latitud y longitud.

Packaging: unfolding worldmap, to hang on the wall and for the reader to find out the points of interest. The barcode is dressed like a trajectory and the rubber bands that hold the belt act as latitude and longitude lines.

Cliffhanger es una revista mensual especializada en monográficos de series de televisión. Se trata de una “guía para sanar las ansias de un seriéfilo enganchado” que sigue colgado del incierto final de una temporada, capítulo, o serie.

El target de esta revista se sitúa entre los 18-50 años, o cualquier público interesado en la cultura de series televisiva. También se incluye en este espectro a cualquier usuario de plataformas como Netflix, HBO, etc.

El objetivo de Cliffhanger es satisfacer las necesidades del fan, no sólo con vital información sobre sus series favoritas, si no con el apoyo a su vez de ilustraciones en cada número y fotografías de alta calidad en el interior de la revista.

Cliffhanger is a monthly magazine specialized in monographs of tv shows. It is a “guide to heal the cravings of a hooked fan” that remains hanging from the uncertain end of a season, chapter, or series franchise.

The target of this magazine is aged between 1850 years, or any public interested in the culture of television series. Also will be included in this spectrum any Netflix, HBO, etc user.

The goal of Cliffhanger is to meet the needs of the fan, not only with vital information about their favorite tv shows, but with the support of illustrations in each issue and high quality photographs inside the magazine.

18 Esta estructura se basa, a su vez en un eje central en el que se nos presenta el nombre de la revista, el tagline “guía para sanar al seriéfilo enganchado” y cuatro titulares de los mejores artículos que se podrán encontrar en el interior, resaltando en negativo el titular principal, que por lo general, se tratará de una entrevista + infografía con datos que saldrán del propio entrevistado (el cual debe salir en la ilustración de la portada).

This structure is based, on a central axis in which the name of the magazine is presented, the tagline “guide to heal a hooked fan” and four headlines of the best articles that can be found inside, highlighting in negative the main headline, which usually will be an interview + infographic with data that will come from the interviewee (which should appear in the cover illustration).

20 Cada mes, cliffhanger publicará una monografía de una serie distinta, así como una ilustración temática de distintos ilustradores. La mecánica del diseño de las portadas se basa en pedir al ilustador que use dos colores bien diferenciados y de alto contraste entre uno y otro, aunando así cualquier ilustación con la estructura principal de la cubierta de cliffhanger.

Each month, cliffhanger will publish a monograph of a different series, as well as a thematic illustration made by different illustrators. The mechanics of the covers’ design is based on demanding the designer to use two well differentiated colors and high contrast between one another, combining, this way, any illustation with the main structure of cliffhanger’s cover.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) es un chico de Atlanta, un prodigio con el volante y experto en fugas. Siempre necesitado de su múscica, prepara cada misión de manera que las canciones se sincronizan al ritmo de la fuga.

Para este proyecto se han creado dos carteles de expectación, el cartel comercial y un cartel alternativo no oficiales. Para ello, me he basado en las características gráficas de dos grandes referencias del cine en las que el automóvil es un fuerte pilar en la trama: porco rosso y death proof. Se ha enfocado el proyecto fusionando estilos gráficos de los movie posters de ambas películas.

LAS CANCIONES SE SINCRONIZAN AL RITMO DE LA FUGA. // THE SONGS ARE SYNCHRONIZED TO THE RHYTHM OF THE RUNAWAY.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a boy from Atlanta, a prodigy with the steering wheel and expert in runaways. Always in need of his music, he prepares each mission in such a way that the songs are synchronized to the rhythm of the escape.

For this project, two posters of expectation, the commercial poster and an alternative poster have been created. I have based the project on the graphic characteristics of two major references of cinema in which the car is a strong pillar in the plot: porco rosso and death proof. The project has been focused on merging graphic styles of the movie posters of both films.

Cartel de expectación 1: se presentan con cierto misterio algunos aspectos de la película. El tagline, “One killer track to rule the road” nos sitúa en una película de acción y se proporciona una información que la separa del resto de películas de acción y coches: “el temazo” (killer track). La gráfica está basada en elementos simbólicos de la película: la cinta de cassete y el coche de juguete, que recorre el camino hacia el estreno.

Teaser poster 1: some aspects of the film are presented with some mystery.

The tagline, “One killer track to rule the road” places us in an action movie and provides information that separates it from the rest of action movies and cars: “killer track”. The graphic is based on symbolic elements of the film: the cassette tape and the toy car, which rides the road to the premiere.

Cartel de expectación 2: se presenta una cercanía mayor al estreno de la película mediante una perspectiva más picada de la composición y la menor abundancia de cinta magnética, que ahora se confunde con humo metaforico que sale del cañón del arma, que, a su vez, sigue aludiendo a la carretera. El tagline “one killer track to share the road”, aporta más información sobre la película. El elemento gráfico del corazón parte la carretera en dos trozos.

Teaser poster 2: it’s shown that the premiere is closer through a more pitched perspective of the composition and the lower abundance of magnetic tape, which is now confused with a metaphorical smoke that comes out of the gun barrel, which also continues to allude the road. Adding to this, there is the graphic element of the heart breaking the road in two pieces.

En el cartel comercial se ha decidido enfocarlo en la propia imagen de baby, ya que el propio título de la película es el nombre que se le da al protagonista.

Por un lado, la paleta de color representa en un tono dramático lo que vamos a ver en la película: en rosa, la esencia infantil a la que ya alude el propio nombre de baby, y además su personalidad y el tono romántico del filme. La tipografía y el color dan un tono de delicadeza informando que no es una película de coches al uso. En cambio, se ha usado el monocromo de grises/verdes para aplicar fuerza y el tono de acción de la película.

En cuanto al fotograma, se presenta al protagonista con los auriculares (música) y un coche de juguete (infantil) intervenido con dos ilustraciones: los guantes y las gafas, en representación al concepto de velocidad y epicidad. Se le ha aplicado a la fotografía una fuerte textura y grano, aludiendo al asfalto.

Se usa el contraste entre el dramatismo serio de la imagen con la redundancia de elementos icónicos del género de acción para confundir la idea preconcebida por el espectador para las películas de acción automovilística.

In the commercial poster I decided to focus on the baby’s own image, since the title of the film itself is the name given to the protagonist.

On the one hand, the color palette represents in a dramatic tone what we are going to see in the film: in pink, the infantile essence to which the baby name itself already alludes, and also its personality and the romantic tone of the film. The typography and the color give a tone of delicacy informing that it is not an usual car movie. Instead, the gray/green monochrome has been used to apply force and the action tone of the film.

As for the image, the protagonist is presented with headphones (music) and a toy car (child) intervened with two illustrations: gloves and glasses, representing the concept of speed and epicity. It has been applied to the picture a strong texture and grain, alluding the asphalt.

The contrast between the image’s serious drama and the redundancy of iconic elements from action genre is used to confuse the preconceived idea of ​​the viewer for the automobile action films.

Alternative poster: the style of the illustration (one line for all) represents the route of a car. In this case, it represents the journey of the protagonist through his own moral conflicts and also the complexity of the runaway trajectories that can be seen in the film.

El concepto de este festival de música es la música como distorsión de la realidad. Se ha querido trabajar a través de juegos de luz y disorsiones de la gráfica para transmitir el poder de la música para ocultar y descubrir cosas, tales como conceptos abstractos como el amor, la ira y la epicidad; trabajando así con los nombres de cada día del festival: Heart, Fury y Swag. Se ha usado la concomitancia entre las distorsiones musicales típicas de la música moderna y las distrosiones que sufre la luz para dar lugar a colores u ocultarlos para representar el éxtasis del momento en un concierto.

El tratamiento gráfico se ha llevado hacia un estilo serio y sutil, pero travieso, construyendo a partir de estructuras mediante textos: las fechas, las bandas, y los símbolos tipográficos de cada día del festival. Estos símbolos están marcados por una tipografía distinta para cada día, las cuales representan los matices conceptuales de dichos días.

LA MÚSICA DISTORSIONA LA REALIDAD. // MUSIC DISTORTS REALITY.

The concept of this music festival is music as a distortion of reality.It has been managed through games of light and distortions of the graphic to transmit the power of music to hide and discover things, such as abstract concepts as love, anger and epicity; this way I could represent the names of each day of the festival: Heart, Fury and Swag.

I have used the concomitance between the musical distortions typical of modern music and the distractions suffered by light to produce colors or to hide them to represent the ecstasy of the moment in a concert.

The graphic treatment has been taken towards a serious and subtle tone, but with a kind of naughty style, constructing from structures through texts the typographical symbols of each day of the festival. These symbols are marked by a different typography for each day, which represent its conceptual nuances.

Este proyecto se ha planteado a partir de analogías entre dos obras maestras icónicas, sus creadores y sus colores, formas y discurso. ¿son las obras maestras difíciles de entender? tanto mini como el cubo de rubik son elementos icónicos de nuestra sociedad. Son elementos que a menudo usamos como accesorios para definirnos. el target de mini tiene un perfil expresivo, necesita emplear los medios necesarios para definirse de un modo especial. Es, en definitiva, la misma actitud que comparte aquel que elige expresar parte de su personalidad a través de los cubos.

La ilustración digital aporta caracter humano y expresivo a lo que se está contando mientras que el collage aporta la sensación de mezcla, que en su conjunto habla sobre los elementos que forman parte de algo, dando concreta importancia a los detalles que lo hacen especial.

LAS OBRAS MAESTRAS SON DIFÍCILES DE ENTENDER, ¿NO?. // MASTERPIECES ARE HARD TO UNDERSTAND, RIGHT?.

This project has been based on analogies between two iconic masterpieces, their creators and their colors, shapes and discourse.

Are masterpieces difficult to understand? both mini and rubik’s cube are iconic elements of our society. They are elements that we often use as accessories to define ourselves. The mini target has an expressive profile, needs to use the necessary means to define itself in a special way. It is, in short, the same attitude shared by those who choose to express part of their personality through the cubes.

The digital illustration brings human and expressive character to what is being told while the collage brings the feeling of mixing, which as a whole talks about the elements that are part of something, giving concrete importance to the details that make it special.

Elementos: el eslogan “masterpieces are hard to understand, right?” lanzando al espectador una pregunta, dando a entender que todo es difícil si no se prueba o se intenta. El elemento gráfico, basado en una ilustración digital de un cubo de rubik, impresa e intervenida con recortes de collage de partes del coche en cuestión. También se ha añadido un elemento infográfico recalcando características propias del mini 3 puertas aplicables al cubo.

The graphic element, based on a digital illustration of a rubik’s cube, printed and intervened with collage cutouts of parts of the car in question (mini 3 doors). An infographic element has also been added, emphasizing characteristics of the mini 3 doors applicable to the cube.

Aquí, el elemento gráfico presenta un cubo de rubik completamente resuelto, aludiendo a que el consumidor por fín se ha decidido a adquirir un mini. Ahora e sel momento en el que, tanto cuando resuelves el cubi de rubik que llevas meses descifrando, como cuando te compras el coche de tus sueños; presumes.

Elements: the same as in the other two promotional posters. Here, the graphic element presents a rubik cube completely solved, alluding to the fact that the consumer has finally decided to acquire a mini. Now, this is the moment, both when you solve the rubik cube that you have been deciphering for months, and when you buy the car of your dreams; you brag about it.

Se ha querido guardar una total coherencia con la estética de la marca, presentada en el Vol.1, por lo que se han usado los colores corporativos y se ha decidido el uso del monocromático en toda la extensión del folleto. También se han usado las tipografías corporativas para marcar pesos y puntos de atención, haciendo la lectura más dinámica.

Se ha efectuado una búsqueda de información sobre cada una de las bodegas mencionadas en el catálogo, para introducir al lector en un entorno concienzudo a la hora de elegir vino. Por otro lado, a la hora de describir los vinos se ha querido simplificar el diseño para que el consumidor no tenga dudas en cuanto a la información dada y esté libre de distracciones.

Las secciones del manual están claramente diferenciadas con el uso de una portada de inicio contundente a través de elementos tipográficos impactantes.

I wanted to keep a total coherence with the aesthetics of the brand, presented in Vol.1, so the corporate colors and the monochromatic appearance have been used on all the brochure. Corporate typographies have also been used to mark weights and points of attention, making reading more dynamic.

It has been made a search of information on each of the wineries mentioned in the catalog, to introduce the reader to a conscientious environment when choosing wine. El catálogo stella muestra la variedad de productos más sobresalientes de la temporada de 2019.

También se dan indicaciones sobre dichos productos y sobre el ámbito para el que han sido diseñados, de manera que un lector no informado sobre el tema puede comprender y elegir las modalidades que desee conforme a sus gustos o intenciones.

En el catálogo se muestra también la historia de la empresa y las bases de la marca, es decir, por lo que trabajan: para que personas se vean interesadas en el mundo del ciclismo y sean capaces de elegir por si mismos.

El objetivo de esta infografía es mostrar gráficamente datos e informaciones sobre las relaciones afectivas, románticas y/o sexuales virtuales, que transcurren en la app Tinder.

La infografía está basada en un estudio realizado por la Universidad Queen Mary de Londres que analiza qué es lo que funciona mejor para ligar en Tinder. Esta inforgrafía ofrece una visión general de esta aplicación y completa con datos externos al estudio sobre la evolución del ligoteo virtual.

En ella podremos ver gráficas sencillas y divertidas, una leyenda para la completa comprensión de la iconografía, algunos datos de personajes de series de televisión que han sido vistos usando este tipo de apps, y algunos datos curiosos aportados por la propia empresa de Tinder.
