to York Open Studios 2025. This year we have over 160 artists exhibiting in more than 110 venues. We are welcoming back many artists who have been regular exhibitors, as well as some who have not participated in York Open Studios for several years. And we’re delighted that one in five of this year’s artists are taking part for the first time.
Over two weekends we invite you to meet some of York’s most talented artists. Chat to them in person about their processes, look around the places where they work and perhaps choose a unique piece of art to take home. Venues range from small studios in the artists’ homes to large commercial workshops and often offer access to special places not usually open to the public. What makes York Open Studios different from so many other exhibitions is that at every venue you will find the makers themselves ready to welcome you and show you around.
Over the weekend of 22-23 March we will be returning to the beautiful venue of the Hospitium for our free Taster Exhibition. All of our artists are invited to contribute a piece to showcase their artwork. The exhibition will give you the opportunity to see representative pieces in this single location to help you choose which studios you would like to visit. More details are on page 4.
TASTER EXHIBITION
The Hospitium, Museum Gardens
22-23 March | 10am-4pm
PREVIEW EVENING
4 April | 6pm-9pm
Please check listings to see which artists are offering this.
FIRST WEEKEND
5-6 April | 10am-5pm
SECOND WEEKEND 12-13 April | 10am-5pm
As always our line-up reflects the wonderful variety of artists in York, displaying a huge range of media and styles. All our artists either live or have a permanent studio within 10 miles of the centre of the city. Selection is by an independent panel who assess applications based on the images and artist statements submitted. For our 2025 event our selectors were Natasha Jones (Helmsley Arts Centre), Mari Thomas (Jeweller) and Simon Morris (former Research Director, Leeds Beckett University) and we would like to express our appreciation for their contribution.
This year our student showcase features two students from York St John University. This is often a student’s first experience of sharing their work with the public and they are looking forward to meeting you. We are also pleased to be able to offer bursaries to two artists presenting installations.
York Open Studios™ is a self-funded non-profit organisation run by volunteers and artists and we are grateful to our visitors for the support and encouragement which enables the annual event to continue.
IF YOU ARE AN ARTIST LIVING OR WORKING WITHIN 10 MILES OF YORK WHO WOULD LIKE TO TAKE PART IN 2026, LOOK OUT FOR OUR CALL FOR ARTISTS IN THE SUMMER. APPLICATIONS OPEN IN JUNE AND SELECTION TAKES PLACE IN SEPTEMBER.
To make the most of the event, we recommend using this guide to help plan your weekends. Each artist has a sequential venue number and a map reference which can be found in the index and on each artist listing. These will help you identify the artists’ locations on the fold-out map at the back of this directory or on our online map. Where several artists are at the same location, you will find their entries follow each other in the directory.
On our website, the clickable interactive map shows you which studios are near you while you’re out and about. You will also find more information about each artist, including biographies, additional images, and directions to the studios.
When you are visiting studios, look out for our bright yellow signage pointing you the right way and balloons marking the venues. (Please note only the artists and venues listed in this directory are part of the event).
One of the joys of York Open Studios is the range of spaces our artists exhibit in - from garden sheds and front rooms to professional studio spaces. However, we recognise that this can add challenges for visitors with different accessibility requirements. Our artists were asked to provide information regarding the accessibility of their venues, and while there isn’t space to include this in the printed directory, it is displayed on the artists’ pages on our website. As so many of the venues are homes rather than public places, and as individual access needs vary, this information is limited, but we hope it’s helpful.
One thing we have been asked to include is information on accessible toilet facilities. Our map is already very busy so we haven’t been able to do this but you can find information on public toilets in York on york.gov.uk/PublicToilets and a map of Changing Places facilities on changing-places.org/find.
Many of our artists are planning to give demonstrations during the event. To see which artists are doing this, look for the ‘D’ symbol in the artist listing, and head to our website for further information.
Some artists are offering an additional chance to see their work at a public preview in their studios on Friday 4th April, 6pm-9pm. Please check their individual listings to see who is taking part in this.
22-23 MARCH | 10AM - 4PM
Our launch exhibition is in the Hospitium, in the beautiful surroundings of Museum Gardens in the centre of York. The Taster Exhibition will help you plan your studio visits, and will include examples of work from most of the artists taking part in York Open Studios this year. Admission is free.
