This class offers gentle yoga movements to help strengthen the body, connect with breath, and build energy. Modifications will be provided, and participants are welcome to practice on a chair or mat (please bring your own). Trauma can change how we relate to the world—causing us to relive the past, disconnect from our bodies, or become hyper-alert. While these adaptations help us survive, they can make it difficult to stay present and feel in control. All are welcome.

15 Years of Managing Emerald Ash Borer in Waukesha

In 2003, a tiny insect was discovered in Detroit, Michigan, that would go on to reshape neighborhoods across the country: the Emerald Ash Borer, or EAB. One year, streets were lined with healthy, leafy ash trees; the next summer, those same streets were bare, the trees dead or dying. The devastation was immediate and dramatic. Early efforts to stop the beetle focused on removing ash trees before they could become infested—but it quickly became clear that this insect was unstoppable. Scientists turned their attention to finding treatments that could save individual trees, and systemic insecticides emerged as a viable solution.

EAB arrived in Waukesha in 2009, and by 2010, WPRF staff had begun managing its spread. At that time, the city was home to roughly 6,500 ash trees. The original plan was simple: slow the beetle’s advance while recognizing that not every tree could be saved. A treatment rotation was established, and trees received systemic insecticides to protect them from EAB. These treatments lasted for several years, giving staff time to remove declining trees methodically rather than in crisis mode.

Over the years, much of that original approach has remained. Even though the front line of EAB has moved beyond Waukesha, protecting our remaining ash trees continues to be a priority. Today, roughly 2,500 ash trees are actively managed across parks and rights-of-way. In the early years, treatment schedules were extended to preserve a larger population of healthy trees. This strategy worked—slowing the beetle’s spread and delaying the decline of many trees—but damage still occurred even in treated populations.

Management strategies have evolved over the last 15 years. Today, Waukesha uses a blended approach: proactive treatment of select trees combined with the removal of those that are declining. Currently, certain ash trees are treated on a three-year rotation, ensuring their survival while reducing future treatment needs. As untreated trees naturally decline, they are removed and replaced, allowing staff to redirect attention to other priorities that were temporarily put on hold during the initial wave of EAB.

Time spent managing EAB has necessarily drawn resources away from general tree maintenance. The current plan creates an opportunity to return to a more proactive approach, including organized, tree-by-tree pruning. While new challenges will inevitably arise, the goal remains clear: manage our urban forest proactively, preserving healthy trees and preparing for whatever comes next.
