LESLIE MIGHT JUST BE A GOD. WHEN HE SAID, “PLEASE LET ME TAKE YOUR PHOTO”, WE BECAME FRIENDS AND WITH THAT, I STEPPED IN FRONT OF HIS CAMERA. LESLIE MIGHT JUST BE THE DEVIL. DURING THE SHOOT, HE HAD ME HOLD POSES THAT MADE MY MUSCLES ACHE FOR THREE STRAIGHT DAYS BEFORE HE WAS SATISFIED. - YUMING

Born in Singapore, Leslie was brought up single-handedly by his mother and grandmother. He lost his mother at the tender age of 13, and over the next five years, he attended school and worked part-time at a Japanese corporation. At that time, he lived with his little sister Sally and his mother’s sister who adopted them both. Watching popular Japanese dramas such as Oshin and listening to Japanese music made him yearn to experience life in Japan. His preference for contemporary music led him to Yuming (ユーミン), the nickname of Yumi Matsutoya (松任谷由実), a renowned Japanese singer, composer and lyricist. He attended her concert in Japan, where he watched Yuming perform live and met her eyes; it was this magical moment that cemented his dream to become a celebrity photographer, as he saw it as a shining opportunity to meet his greatest inspiration. After 24 long years since leaving Singapore and making it big in the fashion industry as a famous photographer, Leslie returned to his home country to work on an exciting new film alongside famed Singaporean director Eric Khoo — Ramen Teh. The collaborative effort is his first work project in Singapore since departing for Japan, and will star the ‘Eternal Idol’ Seiko Matsuda (松田聖子) and actor/model Takumi Saitoh (斎藤工). During the short two weeks when he was in Singapore for the shoot, WAttention managed to catch up with the energetic

photographer, who shared with us how he got into photography,

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH PHOTOGRAPHY? A: Before my mother died, she gave me a Minolta camera as my birthday present, which kickstarted my dreams in exploring photography. Before my National Service, I went on a solo trip to Nepal and India to travel as a backpacker for 18 months. After my NS, I decided to pursue my dreams as a photographer seriously and made the decision to use all my savings and more to relocate to Japan. Because of the language barrier, I started attending Japanese classes at a local institution to become ﬂuent in the language. I then entered the Tokyo School of Visual Arts to study photography in 1995 and graduated in 1997. In 1998, I was hired to work on a shoot that featured Takeshi Kaneshiro and got a big assignment as a contributing photographer with Vogue Taiwan.

Q: WHO OR WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN TERMS OF FASHION/ CELEBRITY PHOTOGRAPHY? A: The very first Japanese concert I attended was that of Yumi Matsutoya, or Yuming, one of the most influential figures in Japanese popular music. During the performance, I managed to catch her eye when she was singing and I immediately felt drawn to her. As with most concerts, there were a lot of official merchandise on sale such as photobooks and on it I saw the credits section for the makeup artists, stylists, photographer and art director — that was a major trigger for me deciding to find my way into this industry because I wanted to be one of the people who could meet Yuming in person through these types of opportunities and photograph her personally.

Q: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE SECRET BEHIND YUMING’S CONTINUED SUCCESS? A: Yuming has this sense of shizensa (自然さ, naturality) that attracts people. She doesn’t try overly hard. Instead, she unknowingly creates trends and gives off the feeling that she enjoys every moment that she’s alive. Another thing I admire about her is her sincere interest in the people she meets, no matter their background. She plays a huge part in my life; because I lost my family quite early, she stepped in as a motherly figure for me and made the effort to close the gap between us when I was still a relatively unknown newcomer in the industry and she was already a huge star. In my mind, she fit my idea of an ideal adult character who left a deep impression on me as I progressed over the years. I eventually fulfilled my dream of taking her photo in 2001, when she was 47 years old, which is the age I’m turning soon!

Q: MANY SINGAPOREANS HAVE THIS IMAGE OF JAPANESE WOMEN AGING GRACEFULLY AND LOOKING YOUTHFUL. WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES JAPANESE WOMEN SO ATTRACTIVE AND WHY DO YOU THINK THEY ARE ABLE TO PRESERVE THEIR YOUTHFULNESS FOR SO LONG?

A: For me, I think food and lifestyle play a big part in this. Healthy food and beverages are readily accessible to the Japanese and many of them grow up being influenced by books, magazines and television programs that reiterate the importance of a nutritional diet, so they are very conscious of their dietary choices. Another factor has to do with the wide variety of cosmetic products available in Japan. Excluding international brands and even major Japanese brands like SKII and Shiseido, the country itself has so many brands and makers of cosmetic items. A good percentage of these products are marketed so well that ladies always feel the need to make themselves look beautiful naturally. In Japan, there are also many different kei (系 , genre) of women including sweet, cute, cool and more, and some products are marketed specifically to suit that particular category. No matter which genre they fall into, they are always mindful of how to maintain their youthful looks and how to dress to suit their age and occasions.

Q: WHO ARE SOME OF THE FEMALE ARTISTES THAT YOU WANT TO PHOTOGRAPH MOST NOW AND WHY? A: I enjoy photographing otona no josei (大人の女性) — women in their 30s to 40s are always interesting to photograph because they have gone through certain stages in life and they always have a story to tell. So far I’ve shot stars such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Meisa Kuroki, Kiko Mizuhara, Rola, Kozue Akimoto and Anna Tsuchiya to name a few, and if I could, I’d want to photograph Asami Kobayashi (小林麻美), a former Japanese pop singer, model and actress who retired in 1991 before I made my debut in photography. ©Leslie Kee All rights reserved. *All photos are reproduced with Leslie Kee’s permission

TOKYO 2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS PARALYMPICS 2020 PROJECT BY LESLIE KEE In October 2016, Leslie joined forces with NHK, Japan’s national broadcasting organization with a special project entitled ‘2020’. An idea which the talented snapper came up with and proposed to NHK independently, it features portraits depicting familiar faces such as athletes, celebrities and the photographer himself. Each picture has the participant holding up a personal, handwritten message for 2020 that reveals their dreams and ambitions.

reated by Kazumasa Watanabe ( 渡辺一正 ), a professional hair and makeup stylist, NABE Makeup ( ナベメイク ) has been making waves in Tokyo since early this year. The style, which is named after its

creator, uses light shades of pink as a base to create looks that bring out one’s natural femininity. According to Watanabe, he wanted to bring focus to the skin’s innate glow and use products to highlight features in a way that made the user look both sweet and ladylike. One of the most important factors to look out for when applying makeup is to avoid being overly conservative. f you’ve browsed Japanese magazines, you may have noticed how the Japanese have plenty of publications dedicated to trendy nail-art and the latest must-wear nail colours. An increase in the number of nail-centric publications beginning in the 1990s started a “nail boom” in the country, but it wasn’t until the late 2000s that gel nails captured the hearts of the Japanese. Popular even in Singapore, Japanese designs for gel nails have become so detailed and creative that it wouldn’t be a stretch to call them miniature artworks. Hana4 (pronounced “Hanayo”), a nail artist and Instagram sensation with over 165,000 followers, sheds some light on the must-have nail styles and designs this year.

o me, beauty is about “achieving a healthy balance”. We tend to strive for dramatic changes in a short period of time, such as “Achieving change in xx days!”, but it causes burden to the human body. The Japanese have been consuming nutritious meals according to seasons since a long time ago. What you consume every day is the deciding factor for beauty from within. In autumn, we consume foods with more fats to store energy for winters, during which there many ingredients that warm the body. Bitter vegetables appear during spring and some, such as horsetail plant and butterburs, are eﬀective for detoxifying, removing fats from the body. It is vital to be conscious about the seasons when eating, and it is also important to consume fresh ingredients straight from the soil. I think the actual source of daily vitality comes from a simple meal such as handmade rice balls, miso soup using miso made by the whole family, or pickled vegetables from my grandmother who lives in the countryside. I have a daughter who is two years old and I choose to teach her about healthy eating and improving her dietary intake for good immunity. A simple homemade meal is my present to my daughter for a healthy future!
