SPEAKER BIO Ahmed Ansari is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Integrated Design and Media at New York University. His research and writing sits at the intersection of design studies and critical cultural theory, with a focus on decolonising knowledge production in design ethnography, history, and theory, and in cosmotechnicity and its promise for more pluriversal forms of designing. He also does educational consulting for design programs in Pakistan and is a founding member of the Decolonising Design platform.

Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design. She has taught graphic design at Southeastern Louisiana University and taught Typography at Loyola Marymount University. She is also a faculty in the low-residency MFA program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Arceneaux is the principal at Blacvoice Design, a studio specializing in branding, electronic media, identity, illustration, print, and publication design, for educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and small businesses.

The use of typography has a strong presence in her work—she is a type enthusiast who enjoys hand-lettering, typesetting, and deconstructing type through a combination of analog and digital processes. Arceneaux has exhibited work nationally and abroad, and in 2013, her work was featured in Idea: International Graphic Art and Typography magazine.

SPEAKER BIO Kate Bingaman-Burt mostly draws, letters, documents, and collects, but she also does a lot of other things that involve energy, conversation, and exchange. Kate is a full-time educator and makes illustrations for all sorts of clients all around the world. Since 2008, she has worked at Portland State University and is the Associate Director of The School of Art + Design and a Professor of Graphic Design. She opened Outlet in 2017, which hosts workshops, pop-up events and a fully operational risograph print studio. Kate loves creating spaces that make people want to MAKE!

SPEAKER BIO Ashleigh Axios is an international speaker, strategic creative, and an advocate for design’s ability to break barriers and create positive social change. She is the Chief Experience Officer and a Partner at Coforma (formerly &Partners), a digital consultancy and design studio that understands that technology, policy, and a critical eye to society’s challenges can help bring about equality and improve ways of life. As of July 2020, Axios is also chair of the national board of directors for AIGA, the professional association of design.

Prior to her role at Coforma, Axios formed and led the in-house creative agency for marketing, communications, and brand identity solutions at Automattic, a technology company on a mission to democratize publishing and commerce. Axios previously served as the creative director and a digital strategist for the Obama White House, bridging two presidential terms in the Office of Digital Strategy.

SPEAKER BIO Naïma is a London (UK) based independent type and graphic designer from France, with Tunisian heritage, working with/in between the Arabic and Latin scripts.

On-going interests and research are situated somewhere at the intersection of type design, language, archive and storytelling. She explores those connections through both her design practice and collaborations as well as through regular workshops she leads.

She recently took part in L.i.P collective research and Against the Grain program curated by Futuress.

Audrey Bennett is an inaugural University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor and Director of the MDes in Integrative Design program at the University of Michigan. She is a former Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Scholar of the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and a former College Art Association Professional Development Fellow. She studies the design of images that, through interactive aesthetics, can permeate cultural boundaries and impact the way we think and behave. Her research publications include: Follow the Golden Ratio from Africa to the Bauhaus for a Cross-Cultural Aesthetic for Images, Towards an Autochthonic Black Aesthetic for Graphic Design Pedagogy, and The African Roots of Swiss Design. She is the co-editor of the Icograda Design Education Manifesto 2011, a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals Image and Text (South Africa) and New Design Ideas (Azerbaijan), and a member of the Board of Directors of the College Art Association.

Pierre Bowins is Assistant Professor in Studio Arts at UMES. His twenty-plus years in the field of design have provided him with a broad view to prepare students for the future of emerging trends in Art and Design’s contemporary practice. Pierre is a lifelong maker, educator and self-proclaimed design historian. His design and teaching methods utilize research-based theories to assist in the discovery of personal, cultural, and historical identities while implementing design ideas within analog and digital media. His research largely focuses on exploring the history of graphic design and investigating the omission that exists within design history. Pierre holds a Master of Fine Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art. He has been an active member of his local Americas Institute of Graphic Arts, College Arts Association, and University and College Designers Association.

SPEAKER BIO Stephanie Carpenter is a letterpress printer, educator, and graphic designer. She is the Program Officer at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. At the museum she leads programs including New Impressions an international, juried exhibition; coordinates the annual Wayzgoose conference; and teaches workshops. As a representative of Hamilton she has been involved with TypeCon 2012 Milwaukee; HOW Design 2016 Atlanta and 2013 San Francisco; and the Type Directors Club in New York City for Century: 100 Years of Type in Design. Her evenings are spent creating personal art in the form of posters, installations, and artists’ books. Stephanie enjoys the tactile nature of letterpress printing, creating her work using wood and metal type, hand-carved blocks, and found imagery.

SPEAKER BIO Carissa Carter is Academic Director at the Stanford d. school. In this role she guides the development of the d.school’s pedagogy, instructors, and class offerings.

She teaches courses on the intersection of data and design, designing with emerging technologies, and design for climate change. Carissa was a co-leader of Stanford 2025, a multi-year project that envisioned the future of higher education. She loves building accessible, analog prototyping tools for emerging technologies. Her ‘I Love Algorithms’ cards have won multiple awards. Carissa’s first career was as a geologist, and she continues to pursue projects at the crossover between design and science. Maps, and the experiences they create, are consistent threads in her work. Her first book, The Secret Language of Maps, comes out in April 2022. Since 2010, Carissa has taken a photo every day at 6:06pm.

FAQs

Is a COVID vaccination required to attend?

Yes, attendees must have received a full dose of a COVID–19 vaccine no later than March 6, 2022.

Are masks required?

We will ask all attendees to wear masks during presentations and when social distancing isn’t possible in-between presentations. Masks are a required element of hotel and event staff uniforms.

Will the event practice social distancing?

Chairs will be spaced out in the general session. Attendees are encouraged to share their socialization comfort by using our identifying resources.
