2025 Watkinson School Annual Report

Page 1

HEAD OF SCHOOL from the

In 2009, with his breakthrough TED Talk, writer and organizational communication leader Simon Sinek began formally asking everyone who would listen the question, “what’s your why?” It wasn’t exactly a new question, certainly the concept of striving for clarity and purpose has been endemic, even instinctual in many arenas and disciplines. Having an objective, knowing the reasons that lie behind or beneath our actions is more than a guide. Being connected to that thing that draws us forward and keeps us going when we’re tired is not only inspiring, it’s an essential element of great work.

As a school, Watkinson has always known something about purpose. Exploring our “why” is not a new endeavor for us. Our “why” is deeply rooted in the belief that there is no greater purpose than educating young people, and by doing so, we demonstrate our faith in and respect for them. Watkinson’s “why” is not simply about preparing students for the next grade or even the next school; it is about equipping them to lead lives of meaning, responsibility, and joy. Every student deserves an education that is as complex, dynamic, and full of possibility as they are. When we keep that purpose at the center of our work, we find both direction and inspiration. It guides the choices we make, from curriculum design to faculty development, from how we use our spaces to how we engage with the wider community.

This year, our “why” was visible in countless ways. It was in the courage of our students as they pursued new ideas, challenged assumptions, and embraced curiosity. It was in the dedication of our teachers who designed learning experiences that sparked imagination and instilled confidence. And it was in the generosity of our families, alumni, alumni

parents, current and past trustees, grandparents, and friends of the school who reminded us that supporting a Watkinson education is a collective act of hope and that it takes all of us to make our school great, and ensure that it remains so.

A key element of the kind of learning that happens at Watkinson is promising — and providing — access to each and every student. Access to robust academic opportunities, to the arts, to athletics, to leadership roles, to travel, to service, and to moments of deep meaning and authentic discovery. Access means more than availability; it means removing barriers so that every student can take part, take risks, and experience the power in claiming ownership of their growth.

When students know their school will offer them a seat at the table — in every program, on every stage, and on every team — they begin to understand their own capacity more fully. They learn that their voices matter, their ideas have weight, and their contributions can make a difference.

I hope this annual report conveys to you the deep gratitude we have to all who support Watkinson. And I hope it brings directly to you more examples of what happens at Watkinson School every day, and a little more of how that happens. But most of all, I hope you see yourself as you open this book and recognize yourself in the “why” that joins us.

With deepest gratitude,

MEET GABY R-L. ’25

“It’s in the bateys of the Dominican Republic that I learned my most valuable lessons. First, lead your life with selflessness and empathy; putting others before yourself is more rewarding than it is punishing. Second, appreciate the little things; not every interaction or act of service has to be grand for it to be impactful. Third, you can create meaningful relationships beyond the barriers of distance, language, culture, and struggles; human connection is so much more than who we are on the surface.

“Being part of Watkinson’s Dominican Republic Service Team, I was pushed to give it my all, to never give up on myself or the people around me.

Similarly, here at Watkinson, there was no one who ever let me give up. Every time I told myself that something was too hard, too scary, or simply impossible, there was always someone to remind me of how capable I am of doing great things. The same encouragement carried me throughout my time in the Dominican Republic, where the service team became an extension of that support system.

“Being part of the Watkinson community has been a privilege, but it has been an even greater honor to be a member of the Dominican Republic Service Team. So as I spend the next four years studying in our nation’s capital, working to bring meaningful change to our country, I will carry these experiences with me, bringing a little bit of Watkinson wherever I go.”

MEET LANDON S. ’26

“For Creative Arts (one of the Dual Diploma programs), I explored how artists from different eras — Léon Bakst (pre-1950) and Alexandre de Betak (modern-day) — have shaped my identity as an artist and the kind of artist I dream of becoming in the future.

“Bakst taught me to be bold with color, texture, and scale. Betak taught me to think beyond the runway — to imagine an entire

world, a feeling, a story. Inspired by both, I created three dresses: one representing Bakst, another representing Betak, and the third representing me — and the future that is still being written.

“This project helped me trust my instincts and learn more about the kind of artist I want to be moving forward.”

MEET ABI S. ’25

“I’m fascinated with how our brains develop from childhood to old age, and this year I’ve looked into the research being done on such topics.

“The essential question I chose to guide my Senior Project was: How do we help an aging memory? For the project, my product was creating a cognitive test designed for lab rats. It consisted of a developmental stage where five groups of rats are raised in different conditions for several weeks before all being put through a bi-color spatial test.

“My mentor, Dr. Etan Markus, has worked in this area of study for a very long time and introduced me to cognitive neuroscience and the research being done with rats. My experiment is inspired by Dr. Markus’s current research project at UConn, with similar button-press-based methods and social learning. In fact, he recently contacted me and invited me to join his neuroscience lab as an incoming freshman, saying that the quality of my senior project was good enough to bypass the mandatory internship period in his labs! It’s a very exciting benefit to come from my project!”

MEET MADDIE B. ’27

“Throughout my 10th-Grade Exhibition and my sophomore year, I have discovered so many things about myself. I have learned that I am interested in interdisciplinary studies, which allow me to combine my interests in the social sciences, psychology, art, humanities, and expression. I have developed a deeper interest in all my core subjects, and I have discovered a new love for learning languages, teaching myself French and actually focusing on Spanish, and I rediscovered my love for art. I am growing into the student I want to be.

“In the future, I want to be an artist, a poet, a lawyer, a politician, a director, a psychologist, a professor — and sometimes I don’t want a career at all. I want to travel everywhere and speak every language, and connect with every person. The concept of one career, or one major,

and even one life is so horrifyingly limiting. Specifically, at this time in high school, people are beginning to narrow down their aspirations and choose a career path, and I am in awe of the overwhelming possibilities. I want to be everything, but I’m simultaneously terrified that I’ll be nothing because of it. Sylvia Plath describes my fears when she writes, ‘I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig-tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor… and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn’t quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig-tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose.’”

MEET JORDANA C. ’29

“So if I had to pick a theme for the class of 2029, it would have to be ‘power in difference.’ However, the Watkinson class of 2029 will never be just one thing. We will never say that we all have the same interests and hobbies. What we can say, though, and proudly at that, is we are strong when we come together. From simple class discussions that end up taking all class because we all are enjoying it, to field trips where we spend hours laughing and telling stories

together, with the all too often excited shrieks absolutely destroying our eardrums (and the bus drivers’). In eighth grade, we built balloon car racers and circuits, made pinch pots, and read Shakespeare. We tackled tests in math and memorized the Preamble to the Constitution in social studies. We the people of the class of 2029 are so bright individually, and when we come together, we’re the loudest at games, we’re kind, funny, strong, and I know we will take high school by storm.”

MEET MEGAN MILAS, MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER

“Watkinson has partnered with Project O for more than 20 years, sending thousands of our students on countless boat rides with the mission of collecting and studying data from our own Long Island Sound. Students are always engaged, very excited, and receive a boatload (pun intended) of compliments from the Project O staff on how attentive, responsible, and knowledgeable they are. On this trip, lots of great science happens, from detecting dissolved oxygen, to salinity measurements, to mud collection and analysis.

This is a transformative day for a lot of students. After we have collected our abiotic data, we work as a team to haul in our trawl net. The joy and wonder that fills the deck is palpable as we sort through marine plants and animals and move them quickly to onboard tanks. Students learn how to handle, identify, and catalogue marine creatures like skate, squid, fish, and crabs. By the end, hesitant students often become the most involved, and everyone leaves the boat with a new accomplishment.”

MEET SAM P. ’31

“One of the most significant things we learned in 6th grade was learning to accept who we are. In Ms. McNamee’s social studies, we were taught that no matter who we are, or where we come from, we should always be proud of who we are. In one of the first lessons of the year, we also did an assignment called ‘Culture: Who Am I? Where Am I?’ I also really liked the iceberg assignment where we talked about what people can see clearly about you, but underneath that external view, who are you? The things above the water are the traits people can see, like hair/eye/skin color, type of dress, etc. Whereas the hidden parts below the water might include things in our unique cultural backgrounds — family traditions, communication styles, values, etc. I thought that this was one of the

most significant lessons because it taught us to always be proud of who we are, and never be sorry for being different or ourselves.”

Erin McNamee adds, “The challenge was recognizing what they may have taken for granted as ‘normal’ as actually being part of their own unique cultural norms. We also thought about how where you live shapes how you live. We revisited these themes throughout the year as we explored different geographic regions around the world and tied it into human rights, with the take home understandings being respect for different cultural values and norms, and that no matter where you live or what groups you identify with, we are all entitled to certain essential human rights.”

2025 A WATKINSON AFFAIR

The warmth of our Watkinson community shone brightly during A Watkinson Affair as we came together for an evening that truly embodied the spirit of our school. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our alumni, alumni parents, current parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends, we surpassed our fundraising goals for A Watkinson Affair! Your contributions provide vital resources for classroom needs, campus improvements, student programs, and financial aid to ensure Watkinson continues to provide the exceptional educational experience our students deserve. During the evening, we honored Phyllis Shikora and Doug Cohen for Philanthropy at Watkinson, and Nick Glowacki ’24 was the evening’s featured speaker.

To everyone who attended, donated, sponsored, advertised, volunteered, or participated in any way: thank you for making this event not just a fundraising success, but also a beautiful showcase of the heart of our community.

2025 GALA SPONSORS

The 2024 Watkinson Golf Classic, held on September 23, 2024, united sponsors, golfers, and supporters for a meaningful cause that extends far beyond the fairway. This annual event serves as a vital fundraiser for Watkinson’s City Scholars program, a transformative one-year post-graduate experience that provides a bridge year for college-bound graduates of public high schools in Greater Hartford who need additional preparation before entering college. Through classes at Watkinson to strengthen transcripts and access to the University of Hartford to build college confidence,

City Scholars receive comprehensive support including expert college counseling.

Thanks to the generous contributions from the 2024 Golf Classic participants and supporters, we welcomed three new students to Watkinson’s 2024-25 City Scholars cohort, all of whom successfully graduated from the program in May 2025. With nearly a decade of proven results, the City Scholars program continues to thrive through the combined support of individual donors and signature events like the Watkinson Golf Classic.

ATTORNEY GENERAL WILLIAM TONG ON CAMPUS

In May, Watkinson had the privilege of welcoming Connecticut’s Attorney General William Tong to campus. The visit was arranged by Justin Kronholm ’87, who is the attorney general’s senior advisor and a current member of Watkinson’s board of trustees. Mr. Tong met with Global Studies students, and a variety of other interested students, faculty, and friends of Watkinson, speaking on an impressive array of topics from the role of government to various cases he is working on.

SPHERE: Supplementary Program for Hartford in Educational Reinforcement and Enrichment

VWatkinson’s SPHERE Summer Program is a fiveweek literacy and mathematics program for 60-70 Hartford and East Hartford youth entering grades 1-5. SPHERE successfully integrates personalized handson education with enriching summertime recreation, and over the last 55 years, has helped more than 3,500 Hartford students prepare for their next year of school.

The main goal of SPHERE is to extend learning beyond June, to prepare students for September in a caring, fun and creative environment. In 2025, SPHERE provided reading, mathematics, and STEM classes, as well as social-emotional learning, field

trips, and daily lunch to 68 participants, all of which is provided to students and their families at the cost of a nominal registration fee. Of these participants, 87% were students of color, 56% were female students, and 77% were Hartford residents or students. The academic growth these students showed was remarkable; by the end of the program, 92% of SPHERE participants displayed improvement towards or met proficiency in reading, and 90% showed improvement towards or met proficiency in math.

We are so grateful to the generous donors who make SPHERE a possibility each summer!

Our annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday included workshops led by 23 student presenters. The theme this year was youth activism, and the cornerstone of the day was a panel discussion facilitated by Ayana Pierre-Maxwell ’22.

ALUMNI GAME ultimate

Alumni came to campus on May 29, 2025 for the Ultimate Alumni Game as alums faced off against current varsity players.

selected to be featured on

In November of 2024, Head of School Teri Schrader was informed by the producers of Empowered Hosted by Meg Ryan that Watkinson was selected to be featured on the show to highlight our college preparatory education program and showcase the exceptional opportunities and experiences students gain through a Watkinson School education. Empowered produces shortform documentaries that are featured on public television across the country. The film crew visited Watkinson in May of 2025 and our feature began airing on September 8, 2025.

Empowered Hosted by Meg Ryan is a critically-acclaimed television series dedicated to promoting female empowerment and excellence in education. Watkinson joins the ranks of other schools (including Loyola and Auburn Universities) and leading businesses (including IBM, Panasonic, and the National Civil Rights Museum) to be featured on the program.

Head of School Teri Schrader comments, “It is incredibly rewarding to receive this distinction. As Watkinson is one of the oldest educational

institutions in Hartford, being chosen for this project is evidence that the school is among the most essential and relevant educational institutions.”

WOODRUFF SOCIETY MEMBERS

The Woodruff Society was established to honor individuals who have included the school in their estate plans, and have used their will, living trust, life insurance policy, retirement plan, or life income gift to support Watkinson. The school is grateful to those listed below who have demonstrated their visionary leadership. Watkinson values the opportunity to recognize, during their lifetime, those forward-thinking individuals who are making an especially personal and meaningful gift through their estate plans. Donors are encouraged to let the school know of their plans, if they have not already done so.
