2022 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Maine International Film Festival

In July, the 25th Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) presented three-time Oscar nominee Debra Winger with its Mid-Life Achievement Award and screened a curated selection of films representative of her illustrious career. Mexican filmmaker Tatiana Huezo was honored with the first-ever retrospective of her works, and Alan Sanborn, co-founder of Railroad Square Cinema, was celebrated with a Lifetime Achievement Award. MIFF25 also received more film submissions from independent filmmakers than in any other year and awarded the first Tourmaline Prizes for best Maine feature-length and short films.

From Railroad Square To Downtown

The Maine Film Center (MFC) celebrated its transition from Railroad Square Cinema to Schupf Arts with two well-attended film series. In November, “The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship” series highlighted fan favorites, important milestones in cinema history, and interactive screenings, closing with Casablanca, the first film to screen at Railroad Square Cinema in 1978. In December, “A (New) Home for the Holidays” welcomed the public into MFC’s new theaters with a series of free holiday movies for all ages.

School Film Screenings

With support from WC’s education + outreach team, MFC hosted a pilot program with Waterville Public Schools to offer film screenings and discussions related to the schools’ curricula. Screenings included Harriet and Seabiscuit for high school students and Charlotte’s Web for third graders. As a result, over 300 students had the opportunity to view a film on the big screen and engage in meaningful, facilitated discussion as a way to enhance their inschool learning.
